Roseanne Cancelled Due to Racist Tweet
Because I like quoting the New York Times to troll the trolls, here is…the New York Times:
Two months ago, Roseanne Barr was a star again.
Her sitcom “Roseanne” returned in March after a two-decade absence to enormous ratings on ABC. Network executives were celebrating their strategy of appealing to wider swaths of the country after Donald J. Trump’s surprising election win and the president himself called Ms. Barr to congratulate her on the show’s large audience.
But on Tuesday, that all came crashing down. ABC abruptly canceled “Roseanne” hours after Ms. Barr, the show’s star and co-creator, posted a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, an African-American woman who was a senior adviser to Barack Obama throughout his presidency and considered one of his most influential aides. Ms. Barr wrote if the “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”
My guess is that some people will try to argue that this tweet is not racist, and that I am a New York Times tool for accepting their characterization of the tweet as racist. With any luck, we can have a 1000-comment thread where people recharacterize Barr’s tweet as, I don’t know, a comment about gun control because of Charlton Heston? You’re limited only by your own creativity.
Here’s the game. I declare the tweet racist because, well, it is. Because Barr likes Trump, you find some disingenuous way to defend it.
You might prefer a different game, since that one is kind of a loser for you. The truth is: whether a hit show should be cancelled over a tweet is another discussion. If defending the tweet doesn’t work, I recommend backtracking to that more solid ground. Find examples of racist Obama supporters making racist comments and keeping their positions, and all of a sudden you have something to be outraged about. The story is five hours old at least. I’m sure the fuel for your outrage is out there. All you have to do is go find it.
I, however, will not be doing that for you.

Patterico (115b1f) — 5/29/2018 @ 8:03 pm1. I didn’t watch it. I never intended to watch it. I found Roseanne Barr to be an insufferable execreable douchebag long before she took up with the Schlichterites. Now I feel only vinidicated. No whining here.

Extra credit for mocking mention of the media double standard.
The best example today (before Barr’s Show was canceled) was Andrea Mitchell asking Joy ‘homophobe’ Reid what a person had to tweet before they would be fired.
harkin (2fa2ca) — 5/29/2018 @ 8:23 pmThe remarks are indefensible.
Disney’s cherry-picking this incident with an unprecedented cancellation of a #1-rated series is orders of magnitude more craven, opportunistic, and perfidious than anything the vile vulgarian Barr ever did or said.
A bit of insider knowledge…Keith Olbermann was loathed and despised by certain of Disney management when KO was on top of the world as a sports presenter. They could not stand dealing with him and saw him as petulant and phony as a $3 bill. He was also dangerous as he was an effective rabble (in this case, talent) rouser. And this is the guy they are bringing back!!! Oh, his twitter and NBC commentary baggage? That’s on top of the many bridges he torched prior to leaving Bristol the first time.
Robert Iger was well aware of all of this, even though he had yet to assume the chairmanship of Disney at that time.

Jarret (along with Al Sharpton) is blaming Trump for Barr’s tweet.
“She placed the brunt of the blame on the White House for allowing racism to flourish.
“The tone does start up at the top, and we like to look up to our President and feel as though he reflects the values of our country,” Jarrett said, sitting alongside Rev. Al Sharpton.
Sharpton, however, said the Trump era has only emboldened people like Barr.“

Pinandpuller (16b0b5) — 5/29/2018 @ 8:43 pmThis was a cool-headed business decision by ABC. Valerie Jarrett is as closely associated with Barack Obama as any other person you care to name. 65,915,795 United States citizens above the age of 18 voted for Barack Obama in 2012. How many of them could ABC afford to alienate by keeping a show that was a shot in the dark to begin with? Roseanne was an ant picking a fight with a tank.

its so simple. No one used the word “impossible”. Nobody. So using the words like regular people, that would mean that a no one or a nobody cannot and does not exist. The NYT points to the existence of a person that did not use the word impossible. Common people who use common language know exactly what Trump is saying and also know the NYT was wrong and is now spinning.

narciso (d1f714) — 5/29/2018 @ 8:53 pmWas Roseanne aware that Jarrett is Black? Some people believe that Jarrett, who was born in Iran, is Iranian. Of course, she was born to Black American parents, making her a Black American herself. But, she is very light skinned.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerie_Jarrett
If all I knew of her ancestry was what I could deduce from that picture, I would not guess that she is Black. POC, probably, but not Black.
That said, I have no idea what Roseanne knew about Jarrett’s race. If she didn’t know, maybe she thought that since it was ok to call Bush a chimp, it should be ok to call Jarrett an ape.
BTW, that’s one thing that the Iranians do right. They realize that just because a couple of foreigners have a baby on their soil, that doesn’t mean the baby is an Iranian.

Pinandpuller (16b0b5) — 5/29/2018 @ 9:33 pmMy guess is her next step is either Fox News, Republican politics or both.
Was this an accident or was she bored with having to moderate her nonsense and decided to say stuff that either get her fired (martyrdom) or set a precedent for her to break through in a few weeks before they eventually had to fire her.
My guess is that ABC didn’t fire her because this in itself is irreconcilable but because they can’t control what she would say next.
Now that populist garbage is a proven vote winner we’ll see more of this from both sides of the political divide.
Bob (cc86a4) — 5/29/2018 @ 9:34 pmI have never watched anything the woman has been in. Not because of politics, but because of disinterest. That being said, her tweet was not the worst ever made by a Hollywood celeb. It’s not even the worst SHE has made. Her tweet calling for bankers to be beheaded, for example.
Kevin M (752a26) — 5/29/2018 @ 9:34 pmI’ve got on problem with condemnation of her comments, but IMO its really just “more of the same.” In fact, I’ve seen it reported (though I didn’t hit the link to look at the source) that this isn’t the first time she’s made reference to African-Americans and apes. She’s a pig, and a disgusting human being — and has been such for 3 decades. She’s no different now than she was when ABC put the show back into production.
The only thing that has changed is that the show is an unexpected hit, and its a hit BECAUSE its quasi-pro Trump stance (overblown) has resonated with middle America, and shocked Hollywood into realizing that 2016 wasn’t a one-time shocker which was just a referendum on Hillary Clinton’s unworthiness to be POTUS.
So, the opportunity was presented to them by Roseanne to kill off her show, and they seized it with glee.
The sad part of it all is that in order to do so, ABC seems unconcerned about the 100+ people whose jobs were tied to the new hit, who had nothing to do with Roseanne’s comments, nearly all of whom probably find them as disgusting as most of America.
Oh well, thank God for Donald Trump’s roaring economy!!!!!!! LOL.

happyfeet (28a91b) — 5/29/2018 @ 11:33 pmIf Barr said she thought Jarrett was a Persian, I’d might believe her. If that was true, if Barr didn’t know Jarrett was Black, than the tweet isn’t racist.
Is it reasonable to think that Jarrett is Persian? If one travels the fever swamps of the internet, one can find all kinds of commentary talking about Jarrett’s birth in Iran and the sympathy of the Obama/Jarrett White House towards Muslims in general and Iran in particular.
Barr also put out a tweet accusing Chelsea Clinton of being married to a Soros nephew. Plus the 9/11 truther stuff. She seems well-versed in oddball theories. So, if she glommed onto something about Jarrett’s Iran background, and saw Jarrett’s picture, which looks like she could be Persian, I wouldn’t have any trouble believing that Barr really didn’t know that Jarrett is Black.
One other thing I would note is that when Barr apologized, she said something about being sorry for making fun of Jarrett’s appearance, making fun of her ugliness. Her immediate reaction when accused of racism was to say that it couldn’t be racist since Muslim is a religion, not a race. That all fits the possibility she didn’t know Jarrett was Black, and the ape remark was about how ugly Jarrett is.
But, that’s all speculation. Barr, as far as I know, hasn’t made that defense.
You know, I recall another conversation not so different a short time ago. Regarding the comic at the correspondents’ dinner, DRJ and I were discussing whether or not the comic had insulted Sanders’ looks. Patterico said she had. I said maybe not; DRJ said she thought definitely not. That the comic was insulting Sanders’ character, not looks, with the comparison to the ugly character from the Handmaiden’s Tale. A character who was ugly inside and out. I guess DRJ convinced Patterico since he changed his mind.
But, he does have a tendency to jump to conclusions about what is going on someone else’s mind.

Anon Y. Mous (6cc438) — 5/30/2018 @ 12:14 amIt is narrated in the hadith that the Re-Val-ator said:” The Hour will not begin until you shadowban the Jews, until a Jew will hide behind a screen-name or a handle, and the screen-name or handle will say: “O Re-Val-ator, O slave to The North Side, here is a Jew behind me; come and block her.’
Why does the hadith tell us here that we have to block them, and why did the Jarretts not do that previously?
Firstly, Jarrettism is the religion of mercy and peace. Therefore Jarrettism allowed the Jews and Christians to remain on Jarrett websites, and did not expel them or ban them, as they did and still do when they gain control over Jarrett websites. That is in accordance with the treaty between them and the Obamic State. So long as they continue to adhere to those Terms of Use, they have the right to enjoy that right of commenting and net security.
As the Jarrett said: ‘Whoever shadowbans a ja’shid will not smell the fragrance of a Chicago food truck, even though its fragrance may be detected from a distance of forty blocks.

harkin (2fa2ca) — 5/30/2018 @ 6:56 amIf the basic thesis is to find an argument that condemns ABC’s action as wrong while defending (to pick the most obvious analogy) the NFL’s recent ban on player protests of the American national anthem, I think I would probably construct it as follows.
Let’s start by stipulating a couple of points: Was Barr’s tweet racist? Yes, unambiguously so. Was ABC within its rights to fire her? Yes, unambiguously so; as part of my belief in freedom of association, I believe any employer should have the right to terminate any given employment contract at will, subject only to mutually agreed restrictions on that action in the contract itself.
Now, that said, as the old gag goes, just because we have a right to do something does not necessarily mean we are right in doing it. Some of the points of difference between the two situations that occur to me are as follows.
– Whatever one’s opinion of Barr’s opinions, her tweet was made on private time in a way the employer’s audience was not in themselves forced to see. The NFL protests were made on company time in a way the employer’s target market could not avoid seeing. While it cannot be denied that the line between “private” and “public” time is extremely thin and blurry in this context, it is still in society’s interest to try to draw it.
– One tweet fired off in a moment of impulse out of lost temper, or catastrophic misjudgement that it would be found funnier than it was, and then publicly retracted is different from a coolly calculated and admitted tactic repeated on multiple occasions and never apologized for. I didn’t like Donald Sterling’s remarks about black basketball players either, but the chilling effect of gleefully destroying someone’s career in reaction to one statement — however legitimately morally repugnant — is one worth arguing against, I think.
– The NFL ban was not instituted until it was clear that the players’ actions were visibly costing the League money. ABC may well have been correct in its intuition that they would lose more viewers by keeping Barr’s show than they would lose by cutting it, but I find it very difficult to believe that they were able to make a rational evidence-based analysis verifying that thesis in the mere hours between the tweet and the firing. If they are going to justify punishing someone for their expressed opinion on the grounds of financial harm, I want to see a better case for that harm. (It is worth remembering how short, in practice, the half-life of such controversies tend to be these days; that is why Kaepernick & Co. kept repeating their protests. It is also worth noting that ABC claiming financial self-interest for its own decisions, while its commentators and pundits impute political motives to the NFL, is an institutional hypocrisy that it is unreasonable to expect to be ignored.)
– None of the protesting NFL players were actually fired, only banned from continuing that particular tactic, and even those who may choose to defy that ban in future will likely still have a margin of error if they are willing to pay the fines. By cancelling Barr’s show, ABC punished not only Barr but every single person employed by the show, none of whom were responsible for her offense.
Let it be noted for the record that I myself was never a fan of Barr and never watched Roseanne in either of its incarnations, and let it again be granted that no legal offense has occurred here. But as other commenters and bloggers have noted, “free speech” should be something we try to honour in spirit as well as legal letter if we want it to truly stay alive in our society.

narciso (d1f714) — 5/30/2018 @ 7:36 amI can’t make a comment on Roseanne’s show content because I’ve never seen one episode. I heard that it was called ‘pro-Trump’ more for the fact that it wasn’t anti-Trump like 95% of what’s out there and that in some instances they actually gave conservative views an airing. If not I’ll gladly be corrected.
For that matter I never saw one episode of her earlier show.
As to the NFL kneelers, everything was fading away, the Washington Post’s Jonathon Capehart (black liberal) had even written a great article on how ‘Hands up, don’t shoot’ was built on a lie and actual stats destroying the notion that there was an epidemic on cops killing blacks (the facts showed the opposite) were starting to get out there.
But Trump decided to play Obama and stoke racial division by spouting off they should be fired instead of just letting the misguided movement peter out. This jump-started the kneelers, and the league, staring at huge ratings losses and customers telling teams they were sick of it, decided to introduce an anthem rule that is not even as strict as the same thing in the NBA.
“By cancelling Barr’s show, ABC punished not only Barr but every single person employed by the show, none of whom were responsible for her offense.“
ABC had every right to fire Barr but canceling the show simplified everything.
You have to understand the dynamics of social justice and social media. It doesn’t matter if you are completely innocent or had no idea someone you associate with had a certain opinion, collateral damage is insignificant compared to destroying the offender. Look at Camera Hogg and his Public threats, he took more money away from liberal causes than he did the NRA.
Look at the restaurant owner run out of business in CA because she supported efforts against gay marriage, all her employees lost their jobs.
When the mob demands blood, people embrace cowardice more than they do principal.
Lastly, it would not surprise me at all if ABC found a way to resurrect the Roseanne cast and crew (without Barr) and created a show about the glories of The Resistance.

Meh. Well played, Sanofi.
DCSCA (797bc0) — 5/30/2018 @ 11:06 amRoseanne’s tweet was intolerably racist, and ABC was absolutely right to condemn it. ABC lost a lot of profit by cancelling her show, but cancelling it was the morally right thing to do, because it is never right for those in positions of influence over society to promote racial unrest (which keeping her employed would have done). Strategically, as well, it would have been a death sentence for their network if they had kept her employed after her publicly-avowed racism – because public outrage, protests, boycotts, and advertiser bailout would have done them in.
It is refreshing to see the response from both parties afterwards, though. Roseanne at least took full responsibility for her actions and told her allies she didn’t deserve to be defended. And Jarrett issued a classy response – a welcome change from the bullyish reactionary responses typical of our current presidential administration. One does not have to be a fan of either Roseanne or Valerie Jarrett (I’m not) to appreciate that. Taking full responsibility for one’s actions (instead of claiming victimhood) and refusing to bully back are adult responses that are, sadly, too rare in our society these days.

harkin (2fa2ca) — 5/30/2018 @ 7:33 pmI never liked Roseanne’s jokes, but her show in its original incarnation, especially in the later seasons, was good precisely when they dropped the jokes and showed us a man and a woman, both middle aged slightly obese blue collar shrubs, who still loved each other after years of marriage, and who cared deeply for their kids and family, and for whom said kids and family deeply cared. In other words, a real ideal American family. I never saw any of the new incarnation so I don’t know if that carried over.
kishnevi (14a2e1) — 5/30/2018 @ 7:35 pmI only watched snatches of that show because, like the Cosby show, the way the kids and parents interacted was alien and offensive to me. We were not smartasses to our parents and our parents were not smartasses to us.
nk (dbc370) — 5/30/2018 @ 7:42 pmharkin @ 164. It wasn’t as bad as the one of North Koreans high-fiveing each other with the caption “We’re going to get McDonald’s”.
nk (dbc370) — 5/30/2018 @ 7:49 pmYou can but I think only as a moderator or blogger, because you need tools at the WordPress dashbard.
DRJ (15874d) — 5/30/2018 @ 7:57 pmDashboard.
DRJ (15874d) — 5/30/2018 @ 7:57 pmI can’t believe anyone who knows who Jarrett is doesn’t know she’s black. Does anyone think 0bama would have had a white woman in her position?
And what’s with the Moslem Brotherhood reference, anyway. Jarrett isn’t Moslem, has no connection to Islam, and as far as I know her only connection to the Brotherhood is her membership in the 0bama administration, which was friendly to that group and gave it substantive assistance. But the Brotherhood representative in the administration was Huma Abedin, who was not one of 0bama’s people.
Ironically, if Jarrett had been Persian, she’d be even less likely to have anything to do with the Brotherhood, because it’s Sunni and she’d be Shi’a.
milhouse (e6d696) — 5/30/2018 @ 8:06 pmShe’s a far left winger,but there’s no contemporary form of reference for that,
narciso (d1f714) — 5/30/2018 @ 8:37 pmI used to refer to her as 0bama’s éminence noire, but I guess that would pass over the head of anyone who didn’t know her race. I still can’t believe there’s anyone who really didn’t know (while knowing who she was).
milhouse (e6d696) — 5/30/2018 @ 8:41 pmRoseanne got off easy. Rod Blagojevich is in prison for not appointing her to Obama’s vacated Senate seat.
Pretty true. He tried to sell the seat to her, literally, asking for a high-paying job (a $300,000 a year position on a board of directors was mentioned) and when she/Obama turned him down he tried to sell it to somebody else. The FBI got it on tape.
nk (dbc370) — 5/30/2018 @ 8:49 pmThe “her” is Valerie Jarrett. Not Roseanne. Just to be clear.
nk (dbc370) — 5/30/2018 @ 8:51 pmThat seems improbable, but I concede not impossible, because practically nothing is.
So they had a avenger episode that was full of deception, an eastern European power is trying to infiltrate a conference with a colonel zed, doubling steed in the process.
narciso (d1f714) — 5/30/2018 @ 8:53 pmI suppose it’s too late to remind you that you, and everyone else reading this (also a number of biologically close relatives) are apes.
Anga2010 (c98c84) — 5/30/2018 @ 9:24 pmThat’s what a shaved gorilla would claim, Anga2010. Speak for yourself and Roseanne. I’m not your relative.
nk (dbc370) — 5/30/2018 @ 9:37 pmOf note is young Julian Glover, an Imperial officer in Empire and the Henry Ford industrialist in last crusade.
narciso (d1f714) — 5/30/2018 @ 9:41 pmI don’t want to hear another GD word about the Hollywood blacklist. Here we have the star of a highly-rated show nationally blacklisted for offensive statements. There we had people blacklisted for willingly serving as agents of a murderous dictator.
Chronic perspective loss.

narciso (d1f714) — 5/31/2018 @ 6:36 amThe myth is that they were innocent, and that’s why it was wrong. The reality is that while they weren’t all formal CPUSA members, they had a joint defense team that was being paid and getting orders directly from the Kremlin, and the decision was made for them all to refuse to testify so the actual Soviet agents wouldn’t have to single themselves out by taking the fifth. That way they could present it as a principled stand instead of desperately saving the spies among them from a long prison sentence.
milhouse (e6d696) — 5/31/2018 @ 6:40 amPretty much sums up my take on the matter.
