Relationship Issues: The President Is Not Your Father, Nor Should You View Him As Such

Filed under: General — Dana @ 3:41 pm

[guest post by Dana]

There is Danger from all Men. The only Maxim of a free Government, ought to be to trust no Man living, with Power to endanger the public Liberty. — John Adams

I typically don’t publish silly reflections from earnest journalists (or anyone else, for that matter) that make me snort derisively, but because Virginia Heffernan’s foolish tweet is so unintentionally instructive as a reminder of how not to view any sitting president, or government itself, I just had to share it:

Untitled

No, Ms. Heffernan, President Obama wasn’t your father. No president is anyone’s father. That is not who the President of the United States is, or was ever meant to be. Moreover, the person who understands basic human nature and the real role of a “father” would never want to consider any president their “father”.

Of course Heffernan is not alone in her feelings about Obama as her “true father”. This from the Washington Post back in 2012:

In 2008, with the whole “hope and change” narrative – not to mention his youthful good looks and energy – Obama was situated somewhere between Jesus Christ and Rock Star in our collective unconscious. But now look at him. After four sobering years of economic crisis and an Arab Spring that just won’t quit, that increasingly-visible graying of the hair above his ears is symbolic. The President has aged, matured, and – like the rest of us parents – seems both wiser and wearier as a result.

It’s evident in the way that he speaks to us. As I’ve watch the presidential debates with my own kids, I’ve been struck by how parental he sounds. Particularly in the third and final debate, where the president could barely mask his disdain for Mitt Romney’s less-than-up-to-date grasp of our military, many pundits – including my colleague, Melinda Henneberger – saw his tone as patronizing, and wondered whether it wouldn’t alienate undecided women voters in particular.

Patronizing? Perhaps. But isn’t that what parents do? They tell us what’s good for us in an “eat your spinach” sort of way and get exasperated, at times, when we just don’t “get it.” And the most annoying part of that schtick, as we all know, is that they’re often right.

It helps that the president is himself, by all accounts, a devoted father…

None of which is to take anything away from Romney, who also appears to be a devoted family man. But somehow, Romney doesn’t come across as our collective Dad. That may be because since he hasn’t (yet, anyway) inhabited the Oval Office…

After her husband was no longer the president, Michelle Obama likened her husband as the good father, and Trump as the irresponsible father:

“I think what we see is what happens when we take things for granted. For the eight years Barack was president, it was like having the ‘good parent’ at home,” she said at the Simmons Leadership Conference in Boston.

“The responsible parent, the one who told you to eat your carrots and go to bed on time. And now we have the other parent. We thought it’d feel fun, maybe it feels fun for now because we can eat candy all day and stay up late, and not follow the rules.”

Lest you think this misconception of the role of a president happens only on the left, John Kasich reminded us it also happens on the right:

“I was a congressman in a governor’s office. And one day, my wife says, you know, I was still, like, being a smart aleck, thinking I could say jokes. I was moving a little too fast. My wife says: ‘You’re the father of Ohio. Why don’t you act like it?’ Its in the book – and I changed.

When you’re running a big job like that, you have to not only use your head, but your heart, and they have to work together. And what he needs to know is he’s the father of America, and that carries a heavy responsibility.”

And then there is our current president. Jim Geraghty at NRO warned us about the president-as-father problem when he shared a moment from one of Trump’s campaign rallies:

A historically literate conservative stands on a soapbox, addressing a crowd.

“As Americans, we are born free men and women. Our rights are endowed by our Creator, and our forefathers fought and died to protect that principle,” he pleads. “We do not need a nanny state! We are not children! The state is not our family! The president is not our father!”

To which all the Donald Trump supporters in the audience reply: “Daddy’s going to win! Daddy’s going to win! Hooray!”

Michael Cohen – that Michael Cohen once said, “To those of us who are close to Mr. Trump, he is more than our boss. He is our patriarch.”

I don’t know how much Virgina Heffernan is representative of our nation as a whole, but I think on both sides of the aisle, the country is made up of more damaged adults with unresolved daddy issues more than we’re willing to admit. And they’re looking for a surrogate father in the Oval Office. And worse, too many politicians are more than willing to assume that role. The dangers of of a symbiotic neediness and arrogance speaks for itself. This results in a diminishment of real-life fathering, and can be seen when one considers the tremendously difficult, time-consuming and frequently heartbreaking work that good fathering in real life requires. And especially when one considers that good fathering – real fathering – comes from an individual who loves his child so much so that he would not hesitate to lay down his life for him. This is not your president, then or now. Even if that president sees himself as such. Even if you see him that way. He isn’t. And he should never be regarded as such.

Geraghty, in his prescient warning, summed it up:

If you’re hoping Trump will be that strong, protective father figure you always wanted, you’re going to be deeply disappointed. You’re also going to be disappointed by Clinton, Ted Cruz, John Kasich, or Bernie Sanders. This isn’t a matter of their character; it’s a categorizing error. The job of the president is not to be your dad. If you want a mentor — an older, wise voice of experience in your life, go ahead and go find one. The world is full of good people who can perform that role. But the folks busy competing to be the next commander-in-chief aren’t among them.

There’s something a little unnerving about an eagerness to see a famous person you don’t know as a father figure. Maybe it’s not quite as bad as the people who talk to their televisions as if the characters can hear them, or the horror-movie-watcher who yells out, ‘Don’t go in there!’ as if the person on the screen can heed the warning. But it certainly suggests the same blurred line between daily life and the faraway world of famous figures on the screen.

P.S. As for Heffernan’s stated concerns about the media: It looks like she is very much a part of the media.

  5. The President is your employee. This clarifies a lot of things:

    1) Is the president the moral leader of the country? No. Never was, never will be.

    2) Do I care about his personal life? Not really, as long as his performance in the job is unaffected. Married? Kids? Basketball fan? So?

    3) Must I vote for him in the next election? If he was my father, I would feel loyalty. But since he is my employee, if he is not doing the job he gets the sack.

    4) In picking a candidate, what do I look for? Well, what do I look for in an employee? They will do what I want, have a record of accomplishment, etc. It is pretty cut and dried. A lot easier, and less emotional, than choosing a father.

  6. That the president works for us, and government, is becoming an antiquated notion

Would you hire an employee who was a compulsive liar?

Would you hire an employee who was on videotape boasting about committing sexual assault?

Would you hire an employee who bragged that one of the perks of his job was being able to peep at naked little girls?

    Dave (445e97)

  9. Okay, that is eerily reminiscent of Star Wars when Darth Vader tells Luke “No, I am your father.”

No, thanks…enough of trying to allure me over to the Dark Side, wanting to “complete my training” [a.k.a. brainwashing] to become as horrid a creature as the president is.

  10. 8. Dave:

Good points, and the answer is a definite “no” to all three of them.

    LJ (9188cd)

  11. Cassandra, morality impacts how you do things. An immoral President will do immoral things. It directly effects what he does and what he achieves.

Why was it important to know Biden was a plagiarist and Edwards an adulterer? Because it was a specific demonstration that they had no integrity.

    Kishnevi (5cc98a)

  12. Dave @8, My answer is no to all three unless my only choice for the position was someone much, much worse. As it was.

    Rev.Hoagie (1b0402)

  13. Speaking of integrity, Trump’s former doctor now admits that the absurd letter about his excellent health that Trump read out during the campaign was dictated by … Donald Trump.

“He dictated that whole letter. I didn’t write that letter,” Bornstein told CNN on Tuesday.

So Trump forged and misrepresented the origin of this document that he falsely presented to the voters as evidence of his supposedly excellent health.

Apparently Trump’s thug/aide Keith Schiller raided Bornstein’s office last year to steal all of Trump’s medical records.

America will be in grave danger until this monster/lunatic is out of the White House.

    Dave (445e97)

  14. 11. And there were plenty of such instances of lacking integrity in Donald Trump. His supporters didn’t and don’t care because they were so utterly cowed by the idea of Hillary in the Oval Office.

    Gryph (08c844)

  15. I love president Trump apparently he found out his New York doctor was so sleazy he actually traded down for a military one.

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  16. Maybe this is why “comics” like Michelle Wolf imply that Trump rapes his daughter.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  17. Has Trump done immoral things as president, Kishnevi? Is there a blue dress just waiting? What action was immoral, bringing North Korea to the peace table or recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital? If his morality “directly effects what he does and what he achieves” then in my book the man’s a saint.

Or perhaps some people can rise above their personal weaknesses and become something better. I don’t know.

  18. Insecurity drives people to The Left, from whence they search for a Father-figure to give them direction and meaning in their insignificant, little, lives.

    he’s not the Daddy

    he’s not the Husband

    he’s not the CEO

    he’s President Trump!

    and he’s beautiful

  20. America will be in grave danger until this monster/lunatic is out of the White House.

Now isn’t that a bit overwrought? The only difference between Trump hiding stuff and Obama hiding stuff, is that Obama knew that it would be hidden for him, and something would happen to it if it was going to come out. Trump has no such illusions.

Obama had a dozen real scandals going, some of which involved people dying, and the press ran interference for all of them, to the point of covering for him in a debate. Every last roadblock that could be erected between the people and the truth was.

With Trump they raid his lawyer.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  21. 18. Is it the same kind of insecurity that drives conservatives to treat Trump like a father figure?

    Gryph (08c844)

  22. I never heard anything in Obama’s medical reports about his smoking. Maybe it didn’t come up, or maybe he asked the doctor not to ask. But even if he didn’t, and Trump did lie, it doesn’t make him a “monster.” Get a grip.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  23. People on the Right ARE the father figures.

  27. Why was it important to know Biden was a plagiarist and Edwards an adulterer? Because it was a specific demonstration that they had no integrity.

The totally ignored Gary Hart’s infidelity until he threw down on them.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  28. OTOH, I would like to know Trump’s cognitive ability, which appears impaired to this layman. The issue isn’t whether Trump lied, but what the doctor’s actual report said. I believe this is public info.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  29. “Would you hire an employee who was a compulsive liar?”

Colleges and universities do it all the time. In fact, they do much worse.

  30. 11. And there were plenty of such instances of lacking integrity in Donald Trump. His supporters didn’t and don’t care because they were so utterly cowed by the idea of Hillary in the Oval Office.

Last time I was going to make the following point Patterico commented that it was offensive to long time, and well respected, contributor DRJ.

I don’t want to repeat the offense, which was primarily due to the quick snark I employed and lack of detail.

DRJ has explained why she voted for Trump. In the earliest quote she provided she explained that it was because Texas was in jeopardy due to Trump so she felt compelled to save it from a Dem victory. Since I arrived her she has stated that Trump has lost favor from her because of the wall, Obamacare, and Planned Parenthood.

Well. Maybe some of the rest of us didn’t do anything different than DRJ on election day, but we keep getting subjected to comments that question us and insult us on what we were thinking leading up to the election.

IMO, it would do a great service to everyone to discuss Trump’s failures and successes after the election and treat everyone who had the same information as DRJ, and made the same decision as DRJ, as equals.

This is what has bothered me. Hopefully it changes some minds.

Could be time to consider mandatory retirement ages, limits or a review of some sort for public positions where the skill sets, reaction ties and such involved can degrade or deteriorate; particularly where life and death issues and fiscal matters are concerned and so forth. Touchy subject. Airline pilots come to mind– FBI agents and so on… even average citizens get their DL reviewed and/or renewed past a certain age. For instance, politics aside, and given his condition, one can fairly question the rationale for keeping the sadly ill John McCain in his gig. Seems unfair to Arizona – and to him.

Would you hire an employee who bragged that one of the perks of his job was being able to peep at naked little girls?

I’m going to need the videotape on that. I seem to remember there was an accusation he went in the changing room of the Miss America pageant, but not bragging it was a perk to “peep at naked little girls”.

Mr. Kishnevi @32, I hate to inform you but Trump is not the first president to sign a “bill that he knew should not have been signed” or kept on an administrator or other subordinate who was corrupt or for some reason should have been dumped. That’s not a sign of bad morals it’s a sign of making a bad judgment call or a sign of compromising due to certain goals or due to certain situations. Like me voting for a flawed character like Trump because I refuse to vote for a corrupt, grifting commie. I made a judgment call. I stand by it. Just knowing every day Trump is in office makes comrade Dave miserable is worth it.

Trump to Howard Stern in 2005:

Well, I’ll tell you the funniest is that I’ll go backstage before a show, and everyone’s getting dressed and ready and everything else, and you know, no men are anywhere. And I’m allowed to go in because I’m the owner of the pageant and therefore I’m inspecting it. You know, I’m inspecting, I want to make sure that everything is good.

You know, the dresses. ‘Is everyone okay?’ You know, they’re standing there with no clothes. ‘Is everybody okay?’ And you see these incredible looking women, and so, I sort of get away with things like that.

Teen Beauty Queens Say Trump Walked In On Them Changing

Four(*) women who competed in the 1997 Miss Teen USA beauty pageant said Donald Trump walked into the dressing room while contestants — some as young as 15 — were changing.

“I remember putting on my dress really quick because I was like, ‘Oh my god, there’s a man in here,’” said Mariah Billado, the former Miss Vermont Teen USA.

Nixon placed loyalty over petty bourgeois attitudes about truth, and got pilloried for it, yet the most terrible thing he did as president was build LBJ’s Great Society. Every last thing conservatives hate was built by Richard Nixon. His foreign policy was brilliant.

I hope to God that Trump in particular would not do so without input from a lot of people a lot more knowledgeable than him, but there there was a time when the scenario depicted in “Crimson Tide” with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman was frighteningly plausible. The buck has to stop somewhere, and it stops here and now with our commander-in-chief.

This General (Commander, US Strategic Command) suggested that if Trump gave an “illegal” order to use nuclear weapons, he would not obey.

But I’m not convinced that General Hyten’s sanity and morality are failsafe against Trump’s lack of same. There’s a complex infrastructure (including the “football”) in place to allow the president to command the nuclear arsenal even if he is cut off from the normal chain of command.

Another definite possibility is that Trump could do what he does best: lie.

  78. “I had the impression our true father was leaving and the nation was stuck with a stepfather who would rape us.” I’ve seen a lot of crazy reaction from Trump haters, but this is clinical. This is delusional.

For the first few months, it was funny to watch the anti-Trump hysterics, but it is now doing real damage to ordinary people’s lives and day-to-day routine transactions.

My gf stopped signing up for Obamacare, as some kind of crazy protest against the 2016 election result. Of course, she got sick, had to ambulance to ER, and is now ducking $10K+ medical bills. In the ER she whined to me “Republicans took away my health care!” I had to end our 20-yr relationship because she lost her marbles completely.

I went to get a loan at the credit union. Lady told me about an adverse rule change, and without any prompting or even any seeming connection to reality, she muttered “you know, Trump!” WTF?!

I took my cat to the vet, and out of nowhere he starts making jokes about Trump tax cuts, as if every “normal” person must obviously be outraged over the silly issue. WTF?!

This liberal hatred is lunatic, corrosive to our society, and sure as heck isn’t funny anymore.

  79. Oh, my gf’s heart attack turned out to be a back spasm, just like the last two times she went to the ER. I don’t know why the paramedics even took her in. Hospital is so disgusted with her, they discharged her after 4 hrs, without a wheelchair, in bare feet, in January. Trump took away her healthcare! 😛

I get the same thing. It’s like he is taking over more and more of their minds, their waking lives. It is endless and never ending outrage, 24/7. It is exhausting to watch.

So I ignore it. And I give people simple advice – don’t spend the next three years in a pissed off mood because of some guy in the white house said some dumb thing. Don’t let Trump decide whether you are going to be happy or sad, have a good day or a bad day. Don’t let him live rent free in your head. Go about your daily life, do good deeds, help people, smile, enjoy the sun, and ignore Trump. The opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference. be indifferent to Trump.

So far no one listens. Probably because I am Cassandra, doomed by the gods etc. etc.

    Cassandra (a815b9)

  81. “Cassandra, morality impacts how you do things. An immoral President will do immoral things. It directly effects what he does and what he achieves. Why was it important to know Biden was a plagiarist and Edwards an adulterer? Because it was a specific demonstration that they had no integrity.”

Well, this point deserves a response. Yes. You are right.

But my choice was not between a moral Hillary and an immoral Trump, now was it? Sometimes when I hire employees, my choices are not so clear cut. I can only hire people who apply for the job. I have two candidates. I have to hire one….

Also, let me clue you in a bit, I’d say, for the most part, republicans have been moral candidates. Democrats, have been immoral. Or is someone here going to tell me that Obama wasn’t just as massive an egotist/liar as Trump? So I’m not exactly stepping down here, am I?

Would I hire a congenital liar? Sure. What job am I hiring him for exactly? Do I have a used car lot and everything must be sold this week or I go bankrupt?

Ideally you would be entirely right. but the world did not present me with an ideal choice, did it? I did not support Trump in the primaries, and in fact supported anyone but Trump. In the general I voted for pot smoking Gary Johnson. Unfortunately he was not selected for the job, and I got Trump. I need to make the best of it. The hiring process was fair. And so far, well, he is implementing a lot of policies I happen to like. So, it could have been worse I suppose.

What else is there to say? hey, if I get a better employee available, I’d be happy to fire Trump and hire them. Do you have someone in mind? can I see their application? How about an interview?

    Cassandra (a815b9)

  82. Or is someone here going to tell me that Obama wasn’t just as massive an egotist/liar as Trump?

Obama wasn’t just as massive an egotist/liar as Trump.

Don’t take my word for it, just ask Ted Cruz:

This man is a pathological liar. He doesn’t know the difference between truth and lies. He lies practically every word that comes out of his mouth. […] The man cannot tell the truth, but he combines it with being a narcissist. A narcissist at a level I don’t think this country has ever seen. Donald Trump is such a narcissist, that Barack Obama looks at him and goes, ‘Dude, what’s your problem?’

    Dave (445e97)

  83. As as George Costanza said, it’s not a lie if you BELIEVE it is true. “You know, I actually believe my own bullshit,” Obama told Wolffe with a smile.

But whatever Dave. Let Trump live in your head for free forever. Let him ruin each and every day for you for the next three years at least. I refuse to join in on that.

    Cassandra (a815b9)

  84. To people who are concerned about Trump lying, can you please tell me, who do you believe is telling the truth in Washington?

Anyone? Is anyone being truly honest? Or all they all narcissists, liars, and agenda driven scoundrels?

    Cassandra (a815b9)

  85. “It’s like he is taking over more and more of their minds, their waking lives. It is endless and never ending outrage, 24/7.”

A great example of that: one morning a few months ago, Meathead Reiner stepped out onto the Malibu beach backyard of his original-colony Xanadu house, beheld the beauty of his ultra-privileged existence, snapped a lovely photo of it, and tweeted a plaint about how awful it is to wake up in Trump’s America every morning.

Love of God and liberty once united Americans. The current main shared value of woke people is hatred. Hatred of Trump, Republicans, God, whites, men, heterosexuals, and tradition. They compete with each other to see who can vent the most disgust, who can quip sharper than Sam Bee, who can smirk bigger than Colbert. Tribal signifiers in every other sentence.

    gp (0c542c)

  86. “Or all they all narcissists, liars, and agenda driven scoundrels?”

All liars. Expect nothing more. Put not your faith in princes. In all of history, name me ONE indisputably honest politician.

Man is fallen. We’re all sinful wretches. American govt was designed with that in mind.
