Trump’s Twitter Foreign Policy

Filed under: General — Dana @ 1:24 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Confession: I don’t own a Trump decoder ring. I’m sure some will emphatically say that this is a brilliant display of foreign policy chess being played out before the world and before several critical world leaders that are of great concern to the US. OK then.

One would assume as one’s position in the world increases in stature and weight, it might make a difference in one’s approach to critical conflicts. One might assume wrongly:

Untitled3

As far as new national security advisor John Bolton is concerned, having been on the job just a few short days, here are a few comments from February that provide a glimpse into his views on the matter of Syria:

I believe since the Syrian civil war broke out nearly seven years ago that the subject of Syria is, sadly, tragic though it might be, is a sideshow in terms of the bigger strategic picture in the Middle East,” Bolton said on Fox in February, using his preferred epithet for the conflict.

While many of his ideological fellow travelers have argued that Assad is the primary problem causing Syria’s many conflicts, Bolton instead posited that the dictator of Damascus was at best a tertiary concern, ranking him “a distant third” behind Iran and ISIS in terms threats to the region. “If you want to know where to go to at least resolve the bulk of the problems we face,” he told Fox’s Martha MacCallum, “it’s not getting rid of Assad in Syria. It’s getting rid of the ayatollahs in Tehran.”

  1. Hello.

    Dana (023079)

  2. we shouldn’t kill a bunch of Russians over a phonied-up “chemical gas attack”

the pentagon piggies should be ashamed at how they’re doing attacks on people based on fake news

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  3. Not to get too 4th dimensional chessy, but Trump’s rough talk on North Korea didn’t mean bombing and WW3.

    Ingot (e5bf64)

  4. This Russian collusion is serious stuff.

    harkin (607a84)

  5. Trump:

Our relationship with Russia is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War.

This may actually be true, because U.S. and Russian soldiers may get into actual combat, at least at long distance. Even if this may have hapepned once or twice before, this may go on for awhile.

This part is not actually true:

Much of the bad blood with Russia is caused by the Fake & Corrupt Russia Investigation…

How does this last sentence make sense?

    A. Democrats are so anxious to go against Trump that they have forgotten their antiwar leanings and therefore people for intervention face no pushback.

    Or:

    B. The Mueller investigation is forcing Trump to be against Russia?

    C. It doesn’t make sense; Trump just wants to attack the Mueller investigation with whatever is handy.

    Or is it D:

    D. Trump wants Putin to think that it is only the Russia investigation that is pushing him to be against Russia – and that when that is over, his hostility will all go away. So asa result, Putin will not escalate or do anything that will affect U..S. territory.

    Or:

E: It isn’t Putin he wants to think it is only the Russia investigation that is pushing him to be against Russia – it’s antiwar leftists oppposed to Trump.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  6. cowardly malingerer john mccain was one of the people who started the fake and corrupt russia investigation with his dossier about urinating hookers!

in December of 2016 what did he say?

“When you attack a country, it’s an act of war,” McCain said of the recent hackings on Ukrainian TV, according to a transcript compiled by Reuters. “And so we have to make sure that there is a price to pay so that we can perhaps persuade Russians to stop this kind of attacks on our very fundamentals of democracy.”

he’s an evil coward, John McCain is

But yes this is a good example of how the fake and corrupt Russia investigation damages the bilateral relationship.

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  7. Trump thinks he’s still part of the fake-sports World Wrestling Entertainment business with Vince McMahon.

The man is unfit for the presidency.

  9. @ Ingot (#3): Nope, Trump’s comments about the Norks and his big “breakthrough!!!1!” have led to kicking that can down the road again for many more months.

Which the Norks, correctly, consider victory, as they continue making more nuclear fuel, more bombs, and better miniaturization and ICBM delivery systems.

  11. Do you guys know how terribly difficult it is trying to support a president who is behaving like this? I’m clearly trying harder than some, but it is very tiring. I wonder if delegates will be wearing paper bags at the Convention.

Yes, he’s better than Hillary, but a syphilitic goat would be better than Hillary.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  12. Beldar,

What happened to Trump between 1999 and now?

He was making all KINDS of sense in 1999 on Meet the Press (2 minutes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQUaQo2j42Y

    Kevin M (752a26)

  13. “In remarks widely seen as a victory on trade for the Trump administration, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Tuesday that he would work to cut tariffs on foreign automobiles and improve protections for intellectual property holders. China’s president also promised to open its financial institutions to foreign investors and work on “regional economic integration. The remarks come less than a week after President Trump floated the idea of tariffs on another round of Chinese goods, this time affecting $100 billion worth of Chinese imports to the United States.” Associated press.

“Very thankful for President Xi of China’s kind words on tariffs and automobile barriers,” Trump said on Twitter. “Also, his enlightenment on intellectual property and technology transfers. We will make great progress together!”

Trade war! He’s starting a trade war! War! I tell you WAR!!!

    Ahem.

Look, I don’t “get” Trump either. He doesn’t work in a way that makes me comfortable, or fits in with my ideal of political leadership. But surprisingly, despite my frequent misgivings, some problems I were assured were unsolvable are being addressed. Once or twice might be dumb luck, but he certainly seems to win more than he loses.

Having worked around real estate developers, Trump is definitely of a type I have seen before. Bluster and bullshit. Sharp as a tack and dumb as a rock. Always working the angles and the referees (that last is just for you beldar).

Yes yes, but will China follow through? I dunno. Is suspect Trump will hold them accountable if they don’t. Or he will otherwise somehow spin straw into gold.

So on Russia? Not how I would play things, but heck, what do I know?

What’s different? That is exactly what he’s doing. He;s going to try to negotiate with orth Korea.

The only difference is that his timing was off.He said North Korea would have abomb in 4 years = 2003.

A four-year vacant Oval Office and subsequent Constitutional crisis would be better than Hillary.

  16. i think Assad is clearing up the opposition near Damascus in preparation for awar with israel. Not one he wants – he’s a puppet now.

I think the goal is maybe not to kill all peoplein the opposition but to smash any posisble underground.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  17. Guess Trump isn’t worried that if he strikes Syria against Russia’s warning that Russia will release all the evidence of their collusion with him, or the incriminating blackmail photos they have. /s

Of course, probably no one here has been in a damned war. Easy to speculate about those that actually get dead in the process.

  19. “Our relationship with Russia is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War. There is no reason for this. Russia needs us to help with their economy, something that would be very easy to do…”

    Worse?

Really, Captain, Sir? Worse than October, 1962? Suggest you check the compass again, sir.

    It’s easy.

    Completely agree.

The fact that he’s being assaulted by a weaponized federal govt and media is my main reason for (sometimes) giving him the benefit of the doubt. I think we may be past the point of no return where they really will be able to take him out. The potential aftermath is a terrifying prospect considering the way the deck is stacked more each day against the constitution.

Russia is beset with problems, and hostility toward the U.S. does nothing to solve them. 3) The Democrats’ unending hysteria about Russia makes it hard for the administration to conduct normal diplomacy. After decades of accepting, if not welcoming, aggression by the U.S.S.R., liberals are now having fainting fits over Russia putting ads on Facebook.”

  64. Hmm. This could get interesting, and Mueller might have made a strategic error. Seems that the Russian firm he charged in the “13 Russian” indictment along with three other companies has now signaled it will appear in court on the charges. https://www.politico.com/story/2018/04/11/russia-company-concord-obtain-lawyers-515432

This will force Mueller and company to release discovery on the case, provide the 13 Russians (and inevitably via leaks) a pretty clear picture of the evidence against them. And, of course, it’s a “no harm” appearance for the company, so you can’t send the company to jail if they get convicted. Wonder what the odds are that Mueller dismisses the case against them so he doesn’t have to reveal any documents or evidence he has collected.

However, by appearing in court through counsel, Concord could force prosecutors to turn over discovery about how the case was assembled as well as evidence that might undermine the prosecution’s theories. In addition, Concord’s move creates the possibility of a trial that could expose sensitive intelligence information without the prospect of ultimately sending anyone to prison.

    It really does help.
    Try it.

Twitter is the worst thing in the world.

  78. Do you guys know how terribly difficult it is trying to support a president who is behaving like this? I’m clearly trying harder than some, but it is very tiring.

    Yeah he’s a problem.

On the other hand being ruled by Putin or gassed by Assad isn’t great either.

Not that I can talk. My old stomping grounds voted in PM Zoolander ferchrisesakes.

  79. Do progressives want us to intervene in Syria or not? Do Republicans? It seems both parties are posturing themselves on both side of the debate. If Trump isn’t hard on Russia then he is Putins’s lap boy, but if he is tough on Russia then he is warmongering lunatic. He must both intervene and not intervene. no boots on the ground, but send a message that matters, not insult Putin, but don’t take his crap. Launch missiles, but don’t hurt anyone or start a war.

In light of all that, why do we take anything the president is saying seriously? No one else is being serious.

  80. we’re already intervening in syria we have tatters prancing around all over the place

and now we’re sending the large war boats over there too

this makes cowardly malingerer John McCain very happy, but he’s stupid

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  81. I also picked up on that, Cassandra. Both the leftists and the neverTrump/RINO/alt-right/neocon clans are on both sides of the fence on Syria. Like you said, they want war & peace simultaneously. IOW, they’re all covering their respective asses. Frankly, I’m as conservative as one can get and my opinion is stay out and as long as moslems are killing moslems don’t interfere. It’s win/win. But let them and the world know if they ever even attempt to harm us or an ally we will annihilate them with nukes.

Our troops should be brought home and deployed to secure our borders from the infiltration of illegals, terrorists, gangs, the sick and those carrying disease, criminals and gang members, the insane and any communists/fascists/socialists who attempt entry. With orders to shoot to kill. I know I’m going easy on them but we have to start somewhere. Then we build a 50′ high wall…..for starters.

I think Trump is right to warn Russia. No good can come from our missile strikes killing Russian soldiers in Syria.

  87. Syria threatened Israel – Israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has tried to make clear to Vladimir Putin that his objectives are limited, but such as they are, they won’t give up on them. No Iranian bases

Well this is a cheerful thought. Iranian proxies in Yemen have been lobbing rockets at Saudi Arabia – so does Washington nuke Tehran, or give them a big thumb’s up because it’s Muslims attacking each other.

Hah – I suspect they all are.

At this point we have tried both bombs and treaties, and endless talk. They don’t care. I certainly don’t see any other country eager to dive on in that quagmire.

Meh. Go to the UN. Set up a war crimes tribunal – that will look like we doing something. And the UN will drag it out for years. By the time they finish it’ll all be over. It’s cynical, but..? We could bomb them, but we are just bouncing the rubble around.
