Trump’s Twitter Foreign Policy

Confession: I don’t own a Trump decoder ring. I’m sure some will emphatically say that this is a brilliant display of foreign policy chess being played out before the world and before several critical world leaders that are of great concern to the US. OK then.
One would assume as one’s position in the world increases in stature and weight, it might make a difference in one’s approach to critical conflicts. One might assume wrongly:
As far as new national security advisor John Bolton is concerned, having been on the job just a few short days, here are a few comments from February that provide a glimpse into his views on the matter of Syria:
I believe since the Syrian civil war broke out nearly seven years ago that the subject of Syria is, sadly, tragic though it might be, is a sideshow in terms of the bigger strategic picture in the Middle East,” Bolton said on Fox in February, using his preferred epithet for the conflict.
While many of his ideological fellow travelers have argued that Assad is the primary problem causing Syria’s many conflicts, Bolton instead posited that the dictator of Damascus was at best a tertiary concern, ranking him “a distant third” behind Iran and ISIS in terms threats to the region. “If you want to know where to go to at least resolve the bulk of the problems we face,” he told Fox’s Martha MacCallum, “it’s not getting rid of Assad in Syria. It’s getting rid of the ayatollahs in Tehran.”

How does this last sentence make sense?
A. Democrats are so anxious to go against Trump that they have forgotten their antiwar leanings and therefore people for intervention face no pushback.
Or:
B. The Mueller investigation is forcing Trump to be against Russia?
C. It doesn’t make sense; Trump just wants to attack the Mueller investigation with whatever is handy.
Or is it D:
D. Trump wants Putin to think that it is only the Russia investigation that is pushing him to be against Russia – and that when that is over, his hostility will all go away. So asa result, Putin will not escalate or do anything that will affect U..S. territory.
Or:
E: It isn’t Putin he wants to think it is only the Russia investigation that is pushing him to be against Russia – it’s antiwar leftists oppposed to Trump.

Look, I don’t “get” Trump either. He doesn’t work in a way that makes me comfortable, or fits in with my ideal of political leadership. But surprisingly, despite my frequent misgivings, some problems I were assured were unsolvable are being addressed. Once or twice might be dumb luck, but he certainly seems to win more than he loses.
Having worked around real estate developers, Trump is definitely of a type I have seen before. Bluster and bullshit. Sharp as a tack and dumb as a rock. Always working the angles and the referees (that last is just for you beldar).
Yes yes, but will China follow through? I dunno. Is suspect Trump will hold them accountable if they don’t. Or he will otherwise somehow spin straw into gold.
So on Russia? Not how I would play things, but heck, what do I know?

The fact that he’s being assaulted by a weaponized federal govt and media is my main reason for (sometimes) giving him the benefit of the doubt. I think we may be past the point of no return where they really will be able to take him out. The potential aftermath is a terrifying prospect considering the way the deck is stacked more each day against the constitution.

This will force Mueller and company to release discovery on the case, provide the 13 Russians (and inevitably via leaks) a pretty clear picture of the evidence against them. And, of course, it’s a “no harm” appearance for the company, so you can’t send the company to jail if they get convicted. Wonder what the odds are that Mueller dismisses the case against them so he doesn’t have to reveal any documents or evidence he has collected.

He must both intervene and not intervene. no boots on the ground, but send a message that matters, not insult Putin, but don’t take his crap. Launch missiles, but don’t hurt anyone or start a war.
In light of all that, why do we take anything the president is saying seriously? No one else is being serious.

Like you said, they want war & peace simultaneously. IOW, they’re all covering their respective asses. Frankly, I’m as conservative as one can get and my opinion is stay out and as long as moslems are killing moslems don’t interfere. It’s win/win. But let them and the world know if they ever even attempt to harm us or an ally we will annihilate them with nukes.
Our troops should be brought home and deployed to secure our borders from the infiltration of illegals, terrorists, gangs, the sick and those carrying disease, criminals and gang members, the insane and any communists/fascists/socialists who attempt entry. With orders to shoot to kill. I know I’m going easy on them but we have to start somewhere. Then we build a 50′ high wall…..for starters.

At this point we have tried both bombs and treaties, and endless talk. They don’t care. I certainly don’t see any other country eager to dive on in that quagmire.
Meh. Go to the UN. Set up a war crimes tribunal – that will look like we doing something. And the UN will drag it out for years. By the time they finish it’ll all be over. It’s cynical, but..? We could bomb them, but we are just bouncing the rubble around.
