Shock: Trump Criticizes Putin on Twitter, Amid Talk of Pulling Out of Syria

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:53 am

It’s only slight irony in the headline. This is actually surprising to me:

I think it might be the first time he has ever personally criticized Vladimir Putin by name.

We know that he understands the human costs of chemical weapons attacks because he has seen them on the teevee. But has it occurred to him that Assad and Putin have been emboldened by the recent stories that Trump has been pushing for a quick withdrawal from Syria? Maybe Vlad and his henchmen haven’t listened to the advice of commenters at this Web site urging that Trump’s words mean nothing.

Time to lob a few missiles without Congressional authorization and pick up some more media praise like he got the last time he did that.

  1. I guess we’re supposed to look past the petty attacks on Trump and respond to the substance of the post. If only there was any.

    random viking (6a54c2)

  2. Substance: talk about pulling out of Syria encourages chemical attacks. Also acts of war should be done only with Cingressional authorization.

Sorry that your man-love for Trump makes it so hard to understand simple points when they are accompanied by the criticism that makes you cry so hard you can’t see straight.

Hey, you give me shit, you get it thrown back at you. I fight! I’m a counterpuncher!

    Patterico (232ecf)

  3. The criticism isn’t petty. It’s on matters of supreme importance. You label it petty because you can’t deal with any criticism of the man and therefore you label ANY such criticism petty.

    TCDS.

  7. Regime, the air strike against that base, and the repelling of the Warner group contingent, the former was more like Reagan’s attack on

  10. Erect any sort of straw man you like. Trump wasn’t my first or second choice. I have no “man love” for him. The post is petty on it’s face, but it’s your site. Definitely he should spend his time reading here — just the posts, not the comments— instead of watching teevee. The snobbery and blue nose posing just oozes…. it’s the anti-Trump look of choice, because there is nothing else.

  12. Comment by Leviticus:

How bout this, Trumpkins: when Patterico takes a shot at Trump, just ignore it. Try to look past your obsession with Donald Trump, and focus on Patterico’s underlying points. After all, that’s the exact same thing you recommend Patterico do with Trump: ignore the perceived boorishness, and focus on the substance.

Go on – lead by example.

I say it “came true” because implicit in the challenge was the claim that Trumpkins would not follow this advice.

  13. And no its not mindless if we realize who has their headquarters in east ghouta, and what their aspirations for Syria are.

    narciso (d1f714)

  14. Note: Apparently the rules are, if you say something positive about Trump (he actually criticized Putin by name and puts blame at his feet), you may not also include any logical (and plausible) possibility about why our enemies might have been emboldened. Just the praise, please.

Which reminds me of the reactions of many commenters here when Obama announced a calendar-based pullout from Afghanistan and caused great concern because it would obviously embolden the Taliban.

    Dana (023079)

  15. Trump wasn’t my first or second choice. I have no “man love” for him.

Sure you do. You show it by the way you squeal like a stuck pig any time he is criticized. And by the way you describe criticism going to separation of powers and fundamental tenets of foreign policy as petty just because you hate any criticism of the man.

    Patterico (232ecf)

  16. We had a sizable contingent in afghanustan, that Obama on the advise of Biden decide to dismantle, now ghani controls a few districts of kabul.

  18. Fine sentiment by POTUS.

What a shame that his, particularly, are cheap.

I genuinely love his expressed core belief against nation-building and interventionism generally. So far, he gets mega-points for having gone after the Caliphate of ISIS for realz and allowing our wonderful military to do its thang. This latest tweet is, I believe, a seminal moment in the DJT evolution as a statesman. The bad actors are varied and almost impossible to isolate in attack. This is not about a given city or stronghold. This is about macro strategy meeting tactical realities. Will he back his rhetoric? Will he conveniently change his rhetoric?

If I had a best solution, I would certainly share it. However, one thing which is an absolute is the necessity for a POTUS to be credible when he talks tough. The world, most especially that fetid world of Islam in Syria, sit in judgment. Much depends on their understanding of our resolve.

  26. These are Trump’s current stated foreign policy goals:

President Trump is bolstering American influence by leading a coalition of strong and independent nations to promote security, prosperity, and peace both within America’s borders and beyond. The promise of a better future will come in part from reasserting American sovereignty and the right of all nations to determine their own futures.

I have no particular problem with Trump’s tweets now that it’s obvious he uses them to vent his tantrums, and I applaud his belated criticism of Putin and Assad.

But explain to me how his tweets are consistent with his foreign policy goals. Are his tweets now a substitute for a foreign policy or a coalition to help stop Russia, Syria, and Turkey? Or is he hoping England, France, the Saudis, etc., will retweet him?

    DRJ (15874d)

  27. Trump today:

If President Obama had crossed his stated Red Line In The Sand, the Syrian disaster would have ended long ago! Animal Assad would have been history!

    Trump in 2013:

President Obama, do not attack Syria. There is no upside and tremendous downside. Save your “powder” for another (and more important) day!

  28. I want sanguine on the khan shaykoun strike because it could
Lead down a dangerous path, but you can’t have your cake and eat it to.

    narciso (d1f714)

  29. According to Trump’s own foreign policy, he should leave Syria alone. That is the problem with not having principles. You get stuck with bad or worse decisions without principles, and this is an example of Trump’s.

    DRJ (15874d)

  30. My last comment was for Dave, with whose point I agree.

    DRJ (15874d)

  31. Or you can, but when we’re in a full scale war with Russia, and we know the mindset of stavka (general staff) and siloviki don’t be surprised where it end up.

  32. No his point is try to avoid decade long engagements, that have definable end.

    narciso (d1f714)

  33. last time they did chemical weapons on people President Trump had the US military sprinkle some expensive missiles on them for to do “deterrent effect” on them

guess that didn’t work huh (another US failure in the middle east lol you people suck at this)

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  34. Much depends on their understanding of our resolve.

Attacking an airbase with something like the CBU-105 would be interesting. Failing that, a few AC-130s attacking Syrian or Russian garrisons.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  35. Both Presidents Bush put together coalitions like Trump says he wants. Remember when Bush 43 had stood at the smoldering pile of 9/11 rubble and said:

The president, who had been in office less than eight months, grabbed a bullhorn and started thanking the fire fighters and other first responders at the scene, telling them that they were in the country’s prayers. Someone in the crowd shouted that he couldn’t hear the president, and Bush replied with the words that made history.

“I can hear you!” he declared. “The rest of the world hears you! And the people – and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.” The crowd reacted with loud, prolonged chants of “USA! USA!”

In this electric moment, Bush captured the mood of the country, delivering just what the American people wanted a combination of gratitude for the rescue workers’ bravery and diligence, defiance toward the terrorists, and resolve to bring the evil doers to justice.

Trump could have done this. What Trump can’t do is follow through. Trump has no policy. It’s all talk, to say what he thinks people want to hear and hope problems go away.

    DRJ (15874d)

  36. And then what do you think will be the next step, there were no drone strikes in Syria or north africa till 2014.

  37. DRJ–

Do you suppose that no previous president would have used Twitter to this extent, had it been available? Teddy R? FDR? Truman? Nixon? Andy Jackson?

The point being that these technologies are new, and there is no way to compare their use to prior presidents. Only Obama, and he never spoke without it being written down for him.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  38. Members of the United Nations Security Council are expected to hold an emergency meeting on Monday in response to a reported chemical attack on Syrian citizens.

The British mission to the United Nations tweeted Sunday afternoon that the United Kingdom, the United States, Poland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Kuwait, Peru and the Ivory Coast have agreed to hold an emergency meeting on the matter.

hmm sounds like failmerica’s gonna to do a coalition on syria

    narciso (d1f714) — 4/8/2018 @ 11:05 am

As I said, we don’t have to take military action since it isn’t our country. Isn’t that Trump’s stated foreign policy? But if he wants results without anything more than a tweet, it won’t happen. That leaves the military option, something you seem to think Bush did wrong. But at least it was our country he was defending.

    DRJ (15874d)

  44. what part of that $30 trillion dollar debt makes failmerica the strong horse

we can’t afford to use our joke military President Trump is wisely gonna do a coalition all up in it and leverage this (putative) chemical weapon attack to isolate Russia

which seems to be the lemony lemonade thing to do here

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  45. The Twitter coalition, right?

    DRJ (15874d)

  46. Russia re-cycled its denials from the election intervention and recent chemical attack on Britain:

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday calling the reported chemical attack a “hoax” and an “information attack” aimed at shielding “terrorists.”

“Information attacks about the use of chlorine or other poisonous substances by the Syrian government troops are continuing. Another such hoax about the chemical attack that supposedly took place in Douma emerged yesterday,” the statement said.

“We have warned of such dangerous provocations many times before. The purpose of these false conjectures, which are without any basis, is to shield the terrorists and the irreconcilable radical opposition, which reject a political settlement while trying to justify possible military strikes from outside,” it added.

“It’s all a hoax!” Sound familiar?

    Dave (445e97)

  47. We have to be willing to go for the long haul if we decide to do something.

Bush said it would be a long haul in his 9/21 address to Congress:

I ask for your patience, with the delays and inconveniences that may accompany tighter
security; and for your patience in what will be a long struggle. ….

As long as the United States of America is determined and strong, this will not be an age of terror; this will be an age of liberty, here and across the world. ….

Our nation – this generation – will lift a dark threat of violence from our people and our future. We will rally the world to this cause by our efforts, by our courage. We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail.

It is my hope that in the months and years ahead, life will return almost to normal. We’ll go back to our lives and routines, and that is good. Even grief recedes with time and grace. But our resolve must not pass.

    And yet it did.

    Kevin M (752a26)

  48. what part of that $30 trillion dollar debt makes failmerica the strong horse

if i understand it right the allegation is that assad did chemical weapons on a hospital

    what was his thinking here

what were the achieves he wanted by doing this

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  50. Its possible this was a reaction to the sanctioning of

    i think you nailed it

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  55. If you don’t think we should respond, say so. It is a tragedy that Syrians are dying but we can’t fix every tragedy.

I am far more concerned about selling out the Kurds, again. That is what I want Trump to fix but I think it’s safe to say he won’t. There is no positive polling for Trump from helping the Kurds fight the Turks. The only upside is in foreign policy, something Trump has so little interest in that he is recycling Obama’s talking points.

    DRJ (15874d)

  56. Yes usually pikachu,

No we did nothing in part because the CIA had written off massoud, because that what we do with people who rally to our side, only when the towers fell we realized that was a mistake and massoud lay dead thanks to a hutteam from brussells

now all a sudden there’s a chemical weapon attack (allegedly) on a hospital (allegedly)

  66. Mr. Feets, you’re proposing that the Russians and Assad did something to help the generals persuade Trump to stay in Syria despite the fact that they want us to to do what Trump said the other day–to get out of Syria.

For the record, I think that until Putin faces a direct and very credible risk of the US taking military action against him, he will continue to do what he does now. And as long as Trump is in the Oval Office, there will never be a credible risk of US action.

    kishnevi (bb03e6)

  67. Mr. Feets, you’re proposing that the Russians and Assad did something to help the generals persuade Trump

    no not really

i think this is probably phonied up to make a us withdrawal from syria untenable in the short to medium term

i think something happened in that hospital or nearby but we have no idea yet what it was

the first reports said the attack was on the hospital but we also have this from the AP

First responders and a relief organization said they found families suffocated in their homes and shelters in the besieged town of Douma, with foam on their mouths.

so they need to get their story straight

also is there really anything unusual about “locking down” an area where your military is doing attacks on rebellious rebel people?

The real consequence of this is that he has already done more damage to US influence and soft power around the world just through acting as described by Dana, than Obama managed in an entire eight years. Other countries don’t know whether to believe our promises and threats, and whether to take our proposals seriously, unless and until we actual act.

Hama was in 1982, (which is 36 years ago now but they didn’t talk about it till much later.

This is actually probably Russian advised policy, so it’s very good to see Trump blaming Putin. It’s like Grodzny. It was also done in Laos in 1975, by a gopvernment influenced by Hanoi, but people “debunked” yellow rain. Also by the Soviets in Afghanistan, for awhile:

    https://www.cia.gov/library/readingroom/docs/CIA-RDP97M00248R000500010018-6.pdf

    It’s politicide.

When an area has completely slipped out of government control, and the entire population is against the government, sometimes the Soviet or Russian or KGB recommended strategy is to kill the entire population because they are lost to the government and it’s not worth its while to try to rule them.

    Saddam Hussein did this too.

This is not mindless or for no reason whatsoever like Trump says. he just doesn’t understand the reason.

But it’s good that Trump thinks so.

There will be a response but they calculated they can afford it.

I was watching Season One of DCI Banks last night. *Spoiler*

This girl got some cocaine laced with strychnine and she ended up convulsing so bad in a bathroom stall it killed her. They thought someone had actually beaten her to death but the stall was locked from the inside. Did you know athletes used to juice with strychnine?

Today’s performance-enhancing drugs take years to severely damage an athlete’s health. Back in 1904, they didn’t have time for such things. A couple of strychnine injections during the marathon at the 1904 Olympics helped Thomas Hicks nearly kill himself by the end of the race. It also helped him win a gold medal.

Today, you’re most likely to find strychnine in rat poison — although some people don’t use it because it’s too cruel. You can also find it in ghoulish detective stories. Strychnine leads to convulsions, especially of the back, legs, and face. The muscles in the face pull taught, forcing the victims to smile as they die — generally of suffocation, since strychnine shuts off the ability to breathe. Strychnine does not cross the blood-brain barrier, which means that the victim is conscious until their death. It is an awful, awful way to go.

Maybe you should Google the difference between “may” and “will”, “jagoff”.

RUSSIAN NOVICHOK DEVELOPER SAYS THERE IS NO ANTIDOTE SO SERGEI SKRIPAL AND HIS DAUGHTER WILL DIE

This quote doesn’t appear on either of the pages you linked. The Russian is not a British government official, and – being interviewed in Russia – knows nothing about the specific condition or dose received by the Skripals.

What he actually said is the following:

If Skripal and his daughter received a lethal dose of B-1976, C-1976, or D-1980, then, most likely, they will suffer the same fate as earlier victims. There is no antidote to these agents.” (emphasis added)

Understand what “if” means? Lack of an antidote does not mean a toxin is 100% lethal at any dosage.

The Russian’s statement is tautological – a “lethal dose,” by definition, will “most likely” kill you, unless there is an antidote.

    narciso (d1f714)

  134. Probably also wise to be skeptical of random Russians claiming to sooper-seekret nerve agent developers.

Here’s another alleged Novichok developer claiming that there is an antidote:

“Antidotes exist, but what does antidote mean?” said Vil Mirzayanov, a scientist who helped develop the agent and later immigrated to the United States, in comments to Sky News on Tuesday. “You’re saving a person who has been exposed to this gas — but temporarily, not to die this time. But he will be an invalid for the rest of his life.”

Note this guy is assuming the poison was in gaseous form – as originally designed – but that is not how it was administered to the Skripals.

And a British professor of toxicology says, in the same article, that there is an antidote:

Once the chemical entered the bloodstream, it would cause the victim’s muscles to go into spasms, pupils to shrink to pinpoints, and breathing to become very labored, said Alastair Hay, an emeritus professor of toxicology at the University of Leeds. At this point, the victim’s life could be saved only by the administration of atropine, which counteracts the agent and allows the body to metabolize it.

And here’s an article from a few days ago with a video of the same “Novichok developer” (Mirzayanov) saying:

“Probably they got a non-lethal dose. They also got an injection of antidotes.”

The same article says, “based on the latest briefings by UK security sources”, that the Skripals were, in fact, treated with the antidote atropine.

Still, this argument doesn’t win over everybody. Even fewer people buy into the necessity for the United States Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) deployment of “Acoustic Kitty.”

It was the 1960s, the midst of the Cold War, and espionage was the stage for many of the machinations between the U.S. and Soviet superpowers. Given the political climate, you might be tempted to forgive the CIA for blowing five years and more than $10 million attempting to train a cat, but the addition of surgically implanted listening equipment, a battery and a tail-based antenna tend to tip things in favor of the critics [source: Edwardes].

Following further surgical attempts to bug the cat and curb its hunger, it darted under a taxicab during a field test and died. Was the animal’s death an accident or an act of sacrifice to end a monstrous program? Today, house cats continue to ignore their human owners, presumably free from surgically implanted spy equipment.

The American public didn’t learn about Acoustic Kitty until the related documents were declassified in 2001.

“Siege” by James Mason unlike “The Turner Diaries” however is a non fiction book that gives a realistic outline of how a white racial revolution could be acheived in the United States if only the grand bulk of the white racial movement could pull its collective head out of its backside and abandon conservative Republican politics wholesale along with the conservative Republican way of thinking.

The reasoning for this is that the Republican party much like the Democratic party is controlled by Jews and is now only a puppet of world Jewry whose sole use now is that of maintaining in the public consciousness that they still have a choice on who their leaders are.

If your typically obtuse allusion is to Wolff accusing Hicks of an affair with Trump (I am reading between the lines as one must always do with you) then you’re flatly wrong. That was not Wolff’s accusation, as anyone who read the book knew, and I said in comments that the only person he could be talking about was Nikki Haley — and that I didn’t believe that, and his rumormongering did not reflect well on him.

Days later, I was proven right. He had been referring to Haley and his accusation was irresponsible and he had to walk it back.

Didn’t do a post, as I recall. Someone mentioned it in comments, as memory serves, saying it was Hope Hicks. I corrected them and said all allusions seemed to be to Nikki Haley, and that seemed silly.

So the news value of my mentioning it in comments was a) to correct someone else on the allegation and b) to note that the allegation was not credible.

So take back your false accusation please.

Dave says in a comment on a Stormy Daniels post:

Michael Wolff claims Dirty Donnie is currently having an affair:

“Oh, it’s somebody he’s f*cking right now?” Maher asked.

“Yes,” Wolff said. “You just have to read between the lines… It’s toward the end of the book, you’ll know it. Now that I’ve told you when you hit that paragraph, you’ll say bingo.”

    I reply:

“Oh, it’s somebody he’s f*cking right now?” Maher asked.

“Yes,” Wolff said. “You just have to read between the lines… It’s toward the end of the book, you’ll know it. Now that I’ve told you when you hit that paragraph, you’ll say bingo.”

The only person I can see near the end of the book about whom Wolff could be hinting is Nikki Haley — and I don’t believe that for a moment.

Dave says he thought it was Hicks and I reply: “I see no arguable hints in the book about Hicks. I do about Haley.” I add further down: “I’d like to think she’s far too smart and ambitious for that.” Several days later, near the end of the thread, after new stories hit showing that the allusion was to Haley and that she forcefully denied it, I say: “Pretty clear by now that (as I said) the smear was about Haley — and I’m glad to see her forcefully refuting them, since (as I said) I never bought it to begin with.”

I think the subject came up in the comments again a few days later after Haley denied it.

    Dave (445e97)

  235. Narciso, the Times has lied, whitewashed, edited in, edited out so many things since Walter Duranty I don’t consider it media. I consider it disinformation. 238. The Ukraine News Agency may be the source of the report that 77000 Russian troops are massed at the border as Hal Thomas claims. Maybe it’s because of Syria but my guess it’s because the Trump Administration authorized the release of sniper weapon systems to Ukraine — weapons authorized in 2015 pursuant to legislation by McCain and Portman. Portman was in Ukraine last week and said he saw “firsthand evidence of Russian aggression on Eastern Border.”

What the f[vowel deleted]ck does “posting this in good faith” mean? I DIDN’T POST IT. I responded to an inaccurate comment from Dave about the target of the false rumor, and said I didn’t believe it. NOTHING I DID THERE IS WRONG AND I WANT YOU TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT.

I don’t give a crap what your friends from the other blog think. You’re being deliberately obtuse about the nature of what I did, and you continue to suggest that I “posted” a false rumor about either Hope Hicks or Nikki Haley. I did neither. The next comment of yours to appear will acknowledge that. – Rothschild Bank of London
    – Rothschild Bank of Berlin
    – Lazard Brothers of Paris

Nationally chartered commercial banks are required to hold stock in the Federal Reserve Bank of their region, which entitles them to elect some of their board members.

  278. 263, true. Russian troops have made repeated incursions into Ukraine, especially since 2013. Hal Turner makes it sound like it means the world is on the brink of war. Maybe we are but I think he’s counting on his audience being unfamiliar with Russian-Ukrainian relations.

Like for instance over at the Hill a guy called me comrade, while he was paradoxically advocating for more government via the EPA, implying derisively that I were a Russian agent.

  292. @293. Interesting he didn’t call the Brits or perhaps he did and they were noncommittal ’til the UN meets Monday. But a ‘coordinated response’ w/France? Mon Dieu. One launches a parade, the other launches a parade of missiles, eh.

  298. I have no idea if this is reliable but, if so, the British may be involved in security/logistics:

This comes amid reports in Turkish media last week that the US was bolstering its military presence in Syria’s Manbij, setting up two new facilities in the region and deploying 300 troops, armored vehicles and construction units in the area.

Kurdish commanders speaking to Sputnik have confirmed that the US, France and the UK were beefing up their presence in Manbij, adding that this seemed to indicate that the US and Turkey had not reached a deal on each other’s ongoing operations in the region.

    DRJ (15874d)

  299. An ISIS attack carried out at the same time? Maybe, plus some speculation why the Israelis might be involved. Everything is wildly speculative.

The Altar of Zeus wasn’t in Raiders was it? It seems like a pretty good bookend to The Ark. Stolen from Turkey and taken to Berlin and used in Nazi pageantry. One thing Ali said is that the SS lightning bolts came from Zeus, IDK.

  320. I’m really trying to figure out whose side McCain is on:

In a statement Sunday afternoon, McCain indirectly blamed Trump for the chemical weapons attack in Syria, suggesting Trump’s recent comments about leaving Syria “very soon” and his non-interventionist approach have “emboldened” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

“President Trump last week signaled to the world that the United States would prematurely withdraw from Syria,” McCain said. “Bashar Assad and his Russian and Iranian backers have heard him, and emboldened by American inaction, Assad has reportedly launched another chemical attack against innocent men, women and children, this time in Douma.”

Nash [the Skirpal cat] was a survivor, supposedly of a nerve agent, but far more likely of being locked in a house without food and water for a month, [Smething less than that, but what you say makes sense] so the first thing you do, instead of giving the kitty a bowl of milk, is go ahead and finish him off with a rock or whatever?

In what universe does that make sense?

In the world of a typical animal control “kill shelter”

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2254729/RSPCA-destroys-HALF-animals-rescues–thousands-completely-healthy.html

It probably hapepned before anybody at a higher level of authority could step in because it was probably not good for Mr. Skirpal to kill his cat. The animal could probably have been brought back to good health, or they could have tried.

The cat would not have been killed with a rock but by a more technical means, like a decompression chamber, or at least shooting.

The UK is looking for atghird country now to take both Skirpals, maybe the United States where they will live under a false identity.

  338. But has it occurred to him that Assad and Putin have been emboldened by the recent stories that Trump has been pushing for a quick withdrawal from Syria?

Probably. But he would also know from regular security briefings that Assad has used chemical weapons on a variety of occasions after the US strikes on Shayrat. This is simply a more egregious example that has caught more public attention, and Trump, for all his flaws, may – to his eternal credit – be gearing up to punish Assad’s forces.

It remains to be seen what that punishment will be or whether it will take.
