President Trump Congratulates Putin On His Unsurprising Election Win

Filed under: General — Dana @ 4:21 pm

[guest post by Dana]

As we learned earlier this week, Incumbent President Vladimir Putin was re-elected by a wide margin. In his post, our host said: I’m looking forward to Trump issuing his congratulations. Well, here you go:

President Trump on Tuesday congratulated President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia on his recent re-election victory, but failed to ask him about either the fairness of the Russian vote, which Mr. Putin won with a lopsided margin, or about allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Mr. Trump also did not raise Russia’s apparent role in a nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy and his daughter on British soil — an act that prompted the United States to join with Britain, France and Germany in denouncing the Russian government for violating international law.

Instead, in his phone call with Mr. Putin, the president focused on what the White House called “shared interests,” including North Korea, Ukraine and the escalating arms race between the United States and Russia. He said he and Mr. Putin were likely to meet soon to discuss those issues.

Trump later said that he was pleased with the conversation he had with Putin:

[I]n his phone call with Mr. Putin, the president focused on what the White House called “shared interests,” including North Korea, Ukraine and the escalating arms race between the United States and Russia. He said he and Mr. Putin were likely to meet soon to discuss those issues.

“We had a very good call,” Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, where he was meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia. “We will probably be meeting in the not-too distant future to discuss the arms race, which is getting out of control.”

White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders defended the President’s call, and avoided making an assessment of whether the election was fair:

“We’re focused on our elections,” Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday when asked if Trump felt Russia’s election, which excluded several Putin critics and sparked accounts of potential vote tampering, was “free and fair.”

“We don’t get to dictate how other countries operate,” she said. “What we do know is that Putin has been elected in their country, and that’s not something that we can dictate to them, how they operate. We can only focus on the freeness and fairness of our elections.”

This is not how it has always been:

That attitude is a departure from decades of U.S. foreign policy, in which a succession of administrations have freely criticized anti-democratic events and elections in other nations.

As recently as March 2017, for example, the State Department issued a statement condemning Putin’s government for cracking down on peaceful anti-Putin protests, which the statement called “an affront to core democratic values.”

Gary Kasparov refused to play along:

kasparov

Some Capitol Hill reactions were less than enthusiastic. From John McCain:

An American president does not lead the free world by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections. And by doing so with Vladimir Putin, President Trump insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election to determine their country’s future, including the countless Russian patriots who have risked so much to protest and resist Putin’s regime.

McCain also tweeted:

That #Putin had to work so hard to drive voter turnout shows the Russian people know his claim to power is a sham. The US stands with all Russians yearning for freedom. #RussiaElections2018

From Mitch McConnell, who although agreed that a president can call whoever he wants, felt this was not something he’d have chosen to do:

“When I look at a Russian election, what I see is a lack of credibility in tallying the results. … Calling [Putin] wouldn’t have been high on my list.”

Ironically, the President’s call was made on the same day that the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report with recommendations on how to safeguard future U.S. elections from hackers and others attempting to manipulate elections. Including Russia:

“The Russians were relentless in attempting to meddle in the 2016 elections, and they will continue their efforts to undermine public confidence in Western democracies and in the legitimacy of our elections,” Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said at a news conference Tuesday.

To consider:

Trump is not alone in congratulating Putin — leaders in France, Germany and elsewhere have done so this week, as Barack Obama did in 2012. But past administrations certainly have seen it as America’s role to call balls and strikes when it comes to elections abroad, and weigh in when democratic institutions are being undermined. A departure from that approach would be welcomed not only by Putin, but other leaders of pseudo democracies around the world.

  1. Hello.

    Dana (023079)

  2. Congratulations Putin.

    Dejectedhead (81690d)

  3. here’s the actual video it’s interesting how in this whole entire super-long post you were never once able to actually quote the words our president, President Donald Trump, used to “congratulate” Mr. Putin

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  4. i’d also be willing to bet you all my starwars that in a free and fair election Mr. Putin would earn a greater percentage of the vote in Russia than doddering cowardpig war hero John McCain got in his sloppy and ill-fated run against food stamp

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  5. So Ivan goes to vote. The poll worker gives him ballot in sealed envelope. He say: “Here is your ballot. Just drop it inside ballot box.” Ivan goes to open envelope. Poll worker say: Stop! What you try to do?” Ivan say: “I want to see how I voted.” Poll worker say: “No! You cannot do that. In new Russia, we have secret election.”

    nk (dbc370)

  6. perhaps Ivan will have more flexibility after the election

  10. happyfeet, this is directly from the White House’s own readout of the President’s call with Putin:

President Trump congratulated President Putin on his March 18 re-election…

    Dana (023079)

  11. ok that tracks with President Trump’s own account of the call in the video at #3 where he talked about how he wants to talk about the arms race that’s been in the news

Russia and China have hypersonic nuclear missiles now that our incompetent trannied-up mattis military has no way to counter (in spite of us spending $700B a year on these bozos)

so that’s some of the context there

plus President Trump goes on to say that he wants to discuss our two countries’ shared and conflicting interests in North Korea and Syria and Ukraine

so it sounds like President Trump is responsibly engaging Russia and has a lot of clarity on what the US interest is in these discussions

Meghan’s cowardslut crash dummy daddy, on the other hand, thinks this is the time for the US to be relentless in an attempt to meddle in Russian politics and undermine public confidence in the electoral process over there – perhaps he has a dossier of unverified information we could share with President Putin that might help “level the playing field” as they say?

He’s kind of the go-to guy for that sort of thing.

  12. One of the more intersting takes was fmr Obama nsc staffer vinegrad in the basilisk who wants to leverage prince salman against Russia, hello did she fall off a turnip truck?

  13. wants to leverage prince salman against Russia

That would be prince salman of US-allied Sodomy Arabia, yes? He recently won a fantastic electoral victory and to my knowledge our president, President Donald Trump, has yet to congratulate him on his victory Mr. narciso.

    what’s up with that

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  14. “President Obama called Russian President-elect and Prime Minister Putin to congratulate him on his recent victory in the Russian Presidential election,” the White House said in a late Friday afternoon statement (read: news dump) about the Friday morning phone call between the two leaders.

“President Obama highlighted achievements in U.S.-Russia relations over the past three years with President Medvedev, including cooperation on Afghanistan, the conclusion and ratification of the START agreement, Russia’s recent invitation to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) and cooperation on Iran,” the statement read. “President Obama and President-Elect Putin agreed that the successful reset in relations should be built upon during the coming years.”

Obama told Putin he looked forward to Putin’s May visit to Camp David for the G-8 summit and the two talked about how they could benefit economically from Russia’s joining the WTO, the statement explained.

That could be a reference to administration efforts to get Congress to repeal the 1974 Jackson-Vanik law that prevents the U.S. from giving Russia permanent normal trade status. Some in Congress are resisting that because of Russia’s deteriorating record on democracy, rule of law, and human rights.

At the end of the statement, the White House mentioned the crisis in Syria, in which the Russian government is arming the brutal regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

“President Obama and President-Elect Putin agreed to continue discussions on areas where the United States and Russia have differed, including Syria and missile defense,” the statement read. “President Obama and President-Elect Putin agreed to continue their efforts to find common ground and remove obstacles to better relations.”

The State Department, in their May 5 statement on the election, noted the concerns of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe about the election, including that it wasn’t a level playing field to begin with, that government resources were used partisan purposes, and that there were procedural irregularities on the day of the election.

“We urge Russian authorities to build on these steps to ensure that the procedures for future elections will be more transparent,” the State Department said. The White House statement made no mention of the problems with the election.

After Russia’s Dec. 2011 parlaimentary elections, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called them “neither free nor fair.” When Russian protesters took to the streets to protest those elections and Putin’s return to the presidency, Putin publicly accused Clinton of inciting the protests.

  20. But of course: Trump ignored his own advisors regarding the call:

President Trump did not follow specific warnings from his national security advisers Tuesday when he congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on his reelection — including a section in his briefing materials in all-capital letters stating “DO NOT CONGRATULATE,” according to officials familiar with the call.

Trump also chose not to heed talking points from aides instructing him to condemn the recent poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain with a powerful nerve agent, a case that both the British and U.S. governments have blamed on Moscow.

The White House press office declined to comment on the briefing materials given to Trump. Two people familiar with the notecards acknowledged that they included instructions not to congratulate Putin. But a senior White House official emphasized that national security adviser H.R. McMaster did not mention the issue during a telephone briefing with the president, who was in the White House residence ahead of and during his conversation with Putin.

Ahead of Tuesday’s phone call, national security aides provided Trump with several handwritten notecards filled with talking points to guide his conversation, as is customary for calls with foreign leaders, according to the officials with knowledge of the call, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.

  24. President Trump understands there’s no real downside to congratulating Mr. Putin but that many of America’s enemies like John McCain and Jeff Flake and the CNN Jake tapper fake news propaganda sluts are deeply deeply invested in the Russia mythology

President Trump understands there’s no marginal utility to the pavlovian propaganda slut agenda in one more news cycle focused on how outrageous it is that Russia Russia Russia is all terrible and sh!t

    and President Trump is terrible

and it’s just terrible how terrible it all is

but President Trump understands that there’s a lot of utility in pressing forward on all fronts while doddering cowardpig John McCain and CNN Jake Tapper fake news chase after a bone he throws deep into a grassy field

You may buy State Secrets, a book sold for $28.35 (new) at amazon.com, and learn the detailed algorithm how to produce novičok directly from its inventor, Russian chemist Vil Mirzayanov, who built it in the 1970s. In December 2012, the Magnitsky Act was signed into law by President Obama, repealing the Jackson–Vanik amendment.[1]

The Russian Federation joined the WTO before Barack Obama hung up the phone congratulating Putin on his reelection.

The new Start treaty was signed a minute after, Barack once again handing over our [Crikey] to Putin.

All the way, up and down the laundry list of chit chat points in the Friday, the week after, Obama went face down in the carpet and presented the country’s posterior for Vlad to impale.

  33. Sometimes the hysteria of crowds causes them to overlook the obvious. Here is a series of 12 questions that do not seem to trouble anyone, but the answers to these should expose why so many of the people today alleging scandals should themselves be considered scandalous.

    1) Had Hillary Clinton won the election, would we now even know of a Fusion GPS dossier? Would assorted miscreants such as Andrew McCabe, Bruce Ohr, Lisa Page, Glenn Simpson, Christopher Steele, or Peter Strzok now be under a cloud of suspicion? Or would they instead have been quietly lionized by a President Clinton grateful for noble services in the shadows rendered during the campaign?

    2) If Clinton had won, would we now know of any Russian-suppliedsmears against Donald Trump? Would a FISA judge now be complaining that he was misled in a warrant request? Would likely Attorney General Loretta Lynch be reassigning Associate Deputy Attorney General Bruce Ohr for his consultations with Fusion GPS operatives? Or would Russian operatives alone be likely, at an opportune moment, to threaten to leak to the media that they had given salacious material to Clinton operatives to ensure her election, and thus they were to be owed for their supposed help in ensuring a Clinton victory? Would anyone be now listening to a losing candidate Donald Trump making wild charges that he had been smeared in the closing days of his campaign by leaks of a Clinton cabal that drew on Russian help?

    3) Are any Russian related interests currently still donating millions of dollars to the Clinton Foundation? Why is Bill Clinton not being asked to speak by various groups—including those with Russian-ties—for $500,000 and above per talk? Is he now less persuasive than he was between 2009 and 2015?

    4) Why did Andrew McCabe believe that two Democratic political action funds, one controlled by Clinton “best friend” Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe, donated a total of $675,288 to his wife’s campaign for a rather obscure state senate post? What percentage of Jill McCabe’s actual campaign budget did the $675,288 comprise? And why after her defeat would Andrew McCabe still not recuse himself from directing FBI inquiries into allegations of (likely next president and past generous benefactor) Hillary Clinton’s prior improper use of an email server while Secretary of State? Does quid pro quo refer really more often to simultaneous benefactions or rather sequential ones?

    5) What is the qualification for lying or giving false information to FBI investigators, and did the information supplied to the FBI by Cheryl Mills and Huma Abedin concerning their knowledge of the use of Hillary Clinton’s private server qualify? Did Christopher’s Steele’s false pledges not to leak any information shared with the FBI to news sources qualify—at least at the level by which the FBI charged Michael Flynn for allegedly lying to their own investigators? Did Andrew McCabe qualify when he told his FBI superiors that he had not been a background source for news stories? What is the FBI’s own internal criminal bar of lying to or providing false information to Congress or government agencies or courts or leaking classified information? Did James Comey qualify when he testified that he had himself never given background interviews (a.k.a., anonymous leaks) to news organizations nor known other FBI agents to do so, or when he testified to Congress that he certainly did not draw up a memorandum exonerating Hillary Clinton from criminal indictment before he interviewed her or when he deliberately leaked several memoranda, possibly classified, taken from confidential conversations with the president?

    6) What would have happened had the FISA court justices been apprised by the FBI and the Justice Department that the submitted Steele dossier was a) paid for by Hillary Clinton, b) impossible to verify by the FBI, and 3) the sole source for news stories that were being used in circular fashion to corroborate the dossier’s veracity?

    7) Why did Bruce Ohr not disclose to his superiors that he had met with the compiler of the anti-Trump dossier, Christopher Steele, as well as Glenn Simpson of Fusion GPS, who had hired Steele? Why did not Ohr disclose on government-mandated ethics forms that his spouse, Nellie, had worked for Fusion GPS on the anti-Trump dossier during the election? What are the criminal and civil penalties for deliberately misleading auditors, if any? Why has Ohr not been put on notice by authorities that he violated such statutes and could face charges?

    8) Why is Christopher Steele not under indictment and facing extradition as a foreign agent for a) interfering in a U.S. election, b) colluding with Russian interests to obtain information deemed damaging to a U.S. presidential candidate, c) lying to the FBI about his own disclosures of FBI sensitive material related to the dossier to news organizations? Did Steele’s collusion efforts and interference in a U.S. campaign differ much from, or exceed, the attempts of Russians currently indicted by Robert Mueller?

    9) Why did Mueller, at the beginning of his special counsel investigation—to ensure against even the appearance of partisanship or conflicts of interests—not insist of potential hires: a) that they had notdonated to either 2016 political campaign, b) that they had notrepresented past clients who were involved either with the Clinton or Trump organizations or were even tangentially involved with ongoing scandals concerning either Clinton or Trump, c) that were not from his own law firm WilmerHale, which was currently representing, or had in the past, individuals who may well be caught up in future special counsel investigations?

    10) Why did Samantha Power, in a non-intelligence affiliated job as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, request classified surveillance of American citizens and others to be sent to her office with the names unmasked, eventually at a rate, on average, of one request per day in 2016? And why and how could she testify that some of those daily requests for unmaskings made in her name were not in fact made by her? If not, then by whom and for what purpose and why with such frequency? And why did the requests continue after the 2016 election and during the transition?

    11) Why were the major figures—James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Robert Mueller, Rod Rosenstein, and Peter Strzok—who have in the past investigated, or are currently investigating or overseeing investigations of collusion charges against Donald Trump, all previously involved with investigations of Hillary Clinton? Have they exercised the same methods in the Trump collusion investigation that they used in the past in which Clinton was exonerated?

    12) Which members of the Obama administration were aware of, or gave orders to, members of the Obama Justice Department and the FBI to use the Steele dossier to obtain FISA court orders to surveille American citizens? And who had access to transcripts of such surveillance, and why were the names of particular American surveilled then unmasked and how were they later disclosed to the media?

Mmmm. Trump’s impeachment. That’s gonna be really, really satisfying.

  49. You may buy State Secrets, a book sold for $28.35 (new) at amazon.com, and learn the detailed algorithm how to produce novičok directly from its inventor, Russian chemist Vil Mirzayanov, who built it in the 1970s.

Does it say how to avoid being the *first* person it kills?

    nk (dbc370) — 3/21/2018 @ 6:02 am

There’s no antidote. The former spy and his daughter are beyond hope, being kept alive by ventilators.

Even if I bought the book that Lubos claims has the formula, I’m not competent to judge the chemistry if he’s right.

Hence my saying, “I can’t tell.”

If you have experience with chemistry “State Secrets” is available in Kindle for $8.00.

  50. Try this one, Rev.Hoagie. Apply your 27 “leftist” truisms to Trump. Honestly apply them.

But you can’t do that, can you? You are not capable of that because the only standard you have is a “double standard”.

    noel (b4d580)

  51. And really, Rev.Hoagie. Stop calling me a leftist and an Obama sympathizer etc. You don’t know anything about me other than my lack of support for some of Trump’s views. That’s it. Stop pretending to know what you cannot know.

  61. Used to be Russia had a evil government, known as “communist”. They had a plan to destroy the U.S. from within, expressed by Stalin as:

“America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: Its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within.”

The actual plan was implemented, and made known in 1963.

There was much progress on this plan, up until the USSR collapsed in 1991. Now, while Russia has become arguably more Christian than the U.S., and has free elections, communist China has taken up the old Soviet plan, and decided to make Xi president for life.

Remember when Algore had his scandal with Chinese donors? Ever hear of Confucius Institutes? Ever wonder about Hillary dressing like Chairman Mao*? China’s recent endorsement of the democrats gun control push? How about the popularity of Bernie** who probably would have won the primaries if Americans were as concerned with the corruption of our elections as they are with Russia’s?

My point is, despite the deep state elites pounding of the war drum on Russia, Russia is not the threat to the west being advertised, the threat is still communism, with China leading the way. The right in America, whether you like Trump or not, better get together, quit pouncing on the laser dot of the propagandist MSM, and recognise the real threat to our way of life and the future of our children. TRUMP IS NOT THE ENEMY OF AMERICA. Beware the Red Guard at the gates***!

Comrade noel, I apply my 27 Truisms to everything and everybody political so don’t tell me what I can or can’t do since by doing that you prove Truism #24. Essentially you have just proved another Truism of leftism: projection. Since you are incapable of applying my truisms objectively you figure I am also. Wrong again, comrade.
