Kelly: Tillerson Was on the Toilet When I Told Him He Was Fired

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:30 pm

If you work for Donald Trump, you signed up to be humiliated. You thought John Kelly was above that? You thought wrong:

Reporters gathered at the White House on Friday were stunned when Chief of Staff John Kelly shared a very embarrassing story about outgoing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

. . . .

Tillerson, Kelly told the room, was suffering from a stomach bug during a diplomatic swing through Africa, and was using a toilet when Kelly broke the news to him.

Sources were stunned that, even in an off-record setting, Kelly would say this—to a room filled with White House officials and political reporters—about Tillerson, who does not officially leave the State Department until the end of the month.

Kelly is routinely touted as one of the more mature members of Trump’s top brass and has often been branded as one of the “adults” in charge.

I never really shared the whole “Wow John Kelly is so awesome” point of view. Looks like I was right.

I don’t really feel that sorry for Tillerson. Anyone who signed up to work for Trump knew that they would be working for a guy who likes to belittle people and show who’s in charge.

This is just the latest example. There will be more. And one day, I predict, John Kelly’s day of humiliation will come too.

He’s not a particularly ‘awesome’ manager, but look what he has to work with. Still Kelly, the man, is pretty impressive. Guess you’d have to be to endure subjecting yourself to Trump Torture day in and day out…

  14. In 2016, Republicans were so hopeful. Surely out of the 16 contenders, one would rise to the top to defeat the hated Hillary. It should be easy as her own party hated her, possibly more than we did.

And then Trump. Oh, we said, this is just staring badly, it will get better as he grows into the job. And other wishful lies. And, every time you turn around, it’s one more little thing. Some things just don’t improve.

Now, I am coming to the conclusion that, no matter how hard I look, there really ISN’T a pony here after all.

That isn’t to say that I want a Democrat in the job, nor to say I wish Hillary had won. It’s to say that, among all who call themselves Republican, Donald Trump is the last guy I’d choose.

I wonder if Tillerson didn’t start it in a conversation with his staff: “I can’t honestly say that I don’t give a sh! t about the f***ing moron firing me, because I WAS taking a dump when Kelly called me.” Kelly learned of it, and tried to turn it around. It’s an implicit confession that Trump cannot be defended on his own merits.

Patterico’s larger point is worth considering. It is kind of amusing how Trump’s cheerleaders are always defending him by saying the GOP needs to adopt the dishonest, immoral tactics of the Democrats.

Welp, one thing the Democrats have proven they know how to do is rig a primary/nomination process against a disfavored candidate.

One might think that hot on the heels of the latest display of the LHMFM herd instinct to believe anything (or just not care if it’s true) that makes the Trump administration look bad, reporting the complete fiction as fact that CIA Deputy Director Gina Haspel oversaw a “black site” where Abu Zubayda was waterboarded 83 times, and that she had mocked and laughed at his torment, when we learn from Pro Publica that she wasn’t even there before waterboarding was halted, that one might expect some caution about reporting a poorly sourced or in this case a non-sourced story that makes the Trump administration look bad. Especially since we hardly go a week without major news outlets having to retract or correct a “too good to check” negative stories about the Trump administration, to the point where most aren’t even stories at all.

    One would be wrong.

The Federalist compiled a list of “16 Fake News Stories Reporters Have Run Since Trump Won” between 8 Nov 2016 and 6 Feb 2017 when the article was published alone. Again, over one story per week entirely or almost entirely wrong. And they’ve kept up the pace up until today.

  83. The Federalist compiled a list of “16 Fake News Stories Reporters Have Run Since Trump Won”

Most of the alleged “fake news” consists of tweets by individuals, not published news reports.

A number of others are factually true, but the Federalist feels they are somehow unfair or misinterpreted. Others are factually accurate reporting of controversial or inaccurate claims made by third-parties. Still others were reporting errors corrected within a matter of minutes.

The real take-away is not to believe anything you read on Twitter without independent confirmation.

Out of the 16 alleged cases, only four are bona-fide bogus stories reported by actual news organizations: Dec 1 (“$0.27 Foreclosure”), Jan 20 (“MLK Bust”), Jan 29 (“Reuters Account Hoax”), February 2 (“Renaming Black History Month”). The Jan 29 error has nothing to do with Trump, either.

All of them were corrected swiftly (the last one within a matter of hours).

When can we expect Trump to correct all the lies he’s told since taking office?

  93. if you pay attention to President Trump and the insights he shares on twitter it’s clear that the sleazy Mueller witch hunt never should have been sanctioned, and that it’s time to shut it down

  94. Do we really think that Kelly would say this, Mattis might have, but I don’t think he would share it with reporters.

  101. 10 Inch Magnetic Knife Bar & Organizer –

    Weird product.

A 17 inch magnetic knife bar costs half as much as a 10 inch.

I’m guessing if I cut the big one down to a 10 inch and sell the remainder I’ll get a free knife rack and $20 clear profit.
