Yes, Trump’s Big Stupid Mouth Is A Real Problem

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:52 pm

Today I posted at RedState: Yes, Trump’s Big Stupid Mouth Is A Real Problem. Quotable: “Let’s call a spade a spade: the problem here is a President who betrayed the Second Amendment yesterday with his every spoken thought.” Enjoy.

    I’m from normal parents, myself.

Yeah, he spent his whole life doing business in New York and Hollywood so that puckering up to Democrats has become a reflex with him. But that’s only a part of his problems.

  9. No meathead every single time people who have no business being on the street are not only loose but getting guns and shooting people, now I realize there are due process issues that need to be ironed out, but this is real life

  10. Trump’s id has always pointed towards saying what he thinks 50.1 percent of the public believes at any given moment, while at the same time not giving a damn if the other 49.9 percent hates his guts. And he really doesn’t care if that 50.1 percent group is the same 50.1 percent all of the time. The result for the past 40 years has been he has no qualms about changing positions when he thinks the mood of the majority of the public’s changed, and as of two days ago, he felt (rightly or wrongly) that the 50.1 crowd was more on the side of the Democrats on new gun laws.

If Trump gets enough push-bask the other way, he’ll re-adjust his position and away from new gun control laws. Anyone expecting steadfastness from him when a major event causes a shift in the public’s perceived position is going to be disappointed.

  14. Yeah, we don’t want the errant honesty of a “spoken thought.” We want thoughts processed through layers of pollsters and focus groups before being vomited out as a carefully crafted lie, in the style of a Bush, McCain, or Romney. Because stuff gets done in such an awesome manner that way.

  15. So what’s the answe esquire of Michigan avenue

Only wealthy and influential persons who can afford $100,000 donations to their local police and politicians should be trusted with guns.

The question is nuncupatory. Patterico already put it in the post: “Forget that it’s guns, and substitute any other item into the sentence, legal or illegal.”

  17. I have a problem with Pat saying “if Obama had said, done, acted like, broke the law in this way,…”

    we would all gone crazy.

Obama put Denesh Desousa in prison for a movie. Obama put a Coptic Christian in prison to cover for his incompetence serving an Ambasador up on a spit. Obama armed 5/8ths of the hitmen in Mexico, and recently the media has tried to sell that as our ambasador to Mexico resigning her position rather than fleeing for her life.

    https://patterico.com/2011/03/04/obama-administration-deliberately-allows-guns-into-mexico-how-many-have-died-as-a-result/

Certainly many Mexicans were killed by American sourced “assault style” rifles, but that wasn’t the goal.

When political level ATF supervisors were questioned they said, “If you’re going to make an omelette, you’ve got to break some eggs.”

Dead Mexicans were just the eggs.

Wasn’t the omelette negative press pushing to disarm law abiding America?

    https://patterico.com/2015/11/24/clock-boy-wants-10-million-invitation-to-white-house-rescinded/

That’s right. An invitation to the Obama White House, so he could get a pat on the back from Obummer, tell him what a fine upstanding Muslim he is growing up to be.

What was the motive for that?

Not for the little muslim rodent, but the Barry O. What was his motive for that?

Under the proposition that monsters aren’t born, but rather grown, nurtured, and cultivated, what Obama was doing was quality checking his crop.

What happens if anything goes, and nothing is ever punished in the school system?

Eventually you’re going to break some eggs and make an omelette. Right?

  25. One more unexplained twist is that on July 10, 2016, the same day Seth Rich was murdered, an FBI agent’s car was burglarized in the same vicinity. Included in the FBI equipment stolen was a 40 caliber Glock 22. D.C. Metro police issued a press release, declaring that the theft of the FBI agent’s car occurred between 5 and 7 a.m. Two weeks later, the FBI changed the time of the theft to between 12 a.m. and 2 a.m. Was the FBI gun used to shoot Seth Rich? Neither the FBI nor the Metro police will discuss.

Another aspect that needs to be uncovered is the FBI’s “denial” that its cyber experts who share space with the D.C. Metro police department at Cleveland Avenue in the District, assisted in accessing data on Mr. Rich’s laptop. Not likely. Data on the laptop revealed that Mr. Rich downloaded thousands of DNC emails and was in touch with Wikileaks. The file with evidence of what was on Mr. Rich’s laptop sits with the FBI in a co-shared space with the D.C. police department. According to Ed Butowsky, an acquaintance of the family, in his discussions with Joel and Mary Rich, they confirmed that their son transmitted the DNC emails to Wikileaks.

To take guns prior to due process is the same as civil asset forfeiture. The state takes your stuff and dares you to spend yourself into bankruptcy proving you’re not a criminal. Then, you have to sue to get your stuff back which, if it were actual stuff like jewelry, can’t be found so TS.

But there’s no reason to stop there. What if Obama’s son-in-law was holding policy meetings at the White House with bankers who later approved his family firm for hundreds of millions in loans? What if Obama was in a public feud with his own Attorney General, whom he disparaged regularly for not protecting him from a DOJ investigation? The reason it doesn’t, besides getting used to it, that people think Obama is more calculating than Trump is – they think most people in psitins of power are – and so they’d read things into it, but people don’t read anything extra into what Trump tweets.

So “due process later” means exactly what it says – take the guns and have a contested hearing later. No hidden agenda beyond that, and even there, he’s not even pretending to seriously float a trial balloon. He may be appealing to peoples’ ignorance, because he might not be quite taht ignorant himself.

  96. Reposted from here.

Re. Trumps rhetoric on guns this week, it’s always best to take what he says with a grain of salt and wait for what he does. Art of the deal and all that.

I really don’t have a problem with strengthening the background check procedure, that is, making it work as advertised which it seems it doesn’t always.

As far as the comment about taking the guns first and then going through the process, it’s been my experience that’s the way it usually works when you get in front of a judge, they tell you you can’t have guns in your house until the case has been resolved. That’s a nothing burger I think.

Having said all that, as a Trump supporter second only to happyfeet around here, if Trump starts banning weapons, I’m done with him.

And I don’t even have one of the guns likely on the list.

Yeah, if the bill Feinstein is so excited about banning so called assault weapons actually passed…and Trump actually signed it, I will admit I was wrong about the man. For now though, posts like this are just another round of chicken little clucking about the sky falling.

At this point I believe this is just Trump playing the game better than most give him credit for. Think about it; with midterms coming up, what better way to secure Republican majorities than encouraging Demorats into another gun control battle? There is no better way to rally the base and make Republicans in congress look like hero’s for defeating it (plus exposing any gun grabbing RINO’s).

Again, I urge everyone to take a deep breath and remember, in the art of the deal the negotiation is fluid, what is important is the outcome. Don’t get yourselves all worked up over what Trump says, judge him by what he does. Unless he actually signs a gun grabbing bill, y’all are just spitting into the wind.

  100. 3. The sheriff is claiming that peole who think they should have prevented it, are thinkingh of something like science fiction.

Sheriff Scott Israel told a local TV station his deputies didn’t have many options.

“This isn’t science fiction,” Israel said. “We’re not allowed to arrest on what a person thinks about on pre-crimes.”

I think he’s referring to this story:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Minority_Report

    Or this movie:

  101. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel also wrote that Nikolas Cruz had moved to Palm Beach County so they couldn’t handle the most recent one of the complaints. They told the caller to call Palm Beach law enforcement.

    https://www.scribd.com/document/372348225/Scott-Israel-letter-to-Rick-Scott

With regard to another complaint, Nikolas Cruzwas referred “to DCF, and Nikolas received mental health counseling, DCF supervision, and medication for 2.5 months before DCF closed the case.”

The rest weren’t arrestable offenses and some weren’t about him – just things like the mother calling police because :her sons were fighting; her son was banging pool equipment against the house; etc.”

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  102. National Reviww reported that Nikolas Cruz did not take any large capacity magazines with him, because he couldn’t hide them in his bag because they were too big.

    https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/03/report-parkland-shooter-did-not-use-high-capacity-magazines/

The 19-year-old school shooter who killed 17 in Florida on Valentine’s Day had 150 rounds of ammunition in 10-round magazines. Larger ones would not fit in his bag, Fla. state senator Lauren Book revealed.

If you want to pretend that comments like his have no effect on legislative drafting and debate, go ahead. Here in the real world, his words matter.

  104. But they’e learned they need to double check with Trump to see what his position actually is.

    In school shooting news:

Two people shot dead at Central Michigan University, in a dormitory. Neither of the two people killed were students, and the killer is still at large although his identity is known. It is belived to be related to domestic violence.

This is the way of Trump … put all of your opponent’s cards on the table … then ignore them

  106. “Here in the real world, his words matter.”

Indeed. In this case however, the words don’t matter unless the law is signed.

Personally, I’m going to hold off on the outrage until I see what is actually done. YMMV

  107. 107. According to an article cited by Althouse, the 13 year old boy changed his mind because he was spotted.

These school shooters get scared off very easily. We’ve seen that time and again. They don’t wait to get shot.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  108. Sammy. WRT 97.
“technically” Maybe. So? Effectively, we have a contested hearing where the state has attorneys on salary and you have to pay your attorney to argue against the state which, even if it loses, can simply say “screw you and sue us some more, if you can afford it”.

Have a friend who was driving legally with a trailer and was rear-ended by a state trooper on a motorcycle. The impact was so hard that it bent the tow bar and deformed the trailer frame. The cop died gruesomely. My friend was in legal trouble for two years. I watched the trial. The defense’s most devastating witness was the prosecution’s expert. One after another criminal act–no evidence, no evidence, no evidence. After the acquittal, the defense lawyer commented that it looked as if the prosecution’s heart wasn’t in it. Still, cost my friend enormously, plus two years of hell for something that was obviously not a crime nor his fault. Apparently, that’s what it took for the state to look good to the state police. And I am supposed to presume good faith in the “contested hearings”?

  109. “Take the guns first, go through due process second,” Trump said.

Come on now. That is just plain funny. No, no, no, it aint ignorance. It’s just that he is ten steps ahead of y’all. Right, happyfeet?

But just in case he takes all of our guns and then gets us into a nuclear war with North Korea or somebody, I am gonna get in some practice time with my slingshot.

  112. “Take the guns first, go through due process second,” Trump said.

    hello

he’s only talking about taking guns away from crazy people the sleazy fbi cowards are too afraid to engage what are gonna do murder on people

    Let’s be clear

President Trump’s saying if the useless fbi is just gonna let crazy people shoot everybody then we have to have a way to step in when the useless fbi lickspittles hang out all day in the fbi basement taking turns on Lisa Page (dirty girl) instead of fighting crime for America

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  113. he’s only talking about taking guns away from crazy people the sleazy fbi cowards are too afraid to engage what are gonna do murder on people

The problem with this is that we determine whether someone is crazy and going to do murder on people by going through due process. Trump wants to seize the guns before due process.

    Chuck Bartowski (bc1c71)

  114. nonono he’s threatening the fbi with irrelevancy if they don’t clean up their act
