Media Loves Them Some North Korean Dictators

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:52 am

I guess they’re excited because Kim’s monster of a sister frowned at True Devil Mike Pence or something. Anyway, the signs of the fawning suggested by the headline are everywhere, but the attitude is nicely summed up by this now-deleted tweet by Certified Idiot (I once made the mistake of having a Twitter exchange with him so I know) Jeet Heer:

Heer Jeet Idiot

CNN is joining in with a vengeance. Here is just one ridiculous headline among many:

CNN Idiots

Allahpundit says it so I don’t have to curse:

Tough but fair.

And the regime she faithfully serves is beyond weird. It starves its own people, operates Nazi-style prison camps, represses political opposition, and executes senior officers and even members of the dictator’s (and his sister’s) own family members in an effort to maintain dictatorial control.

Even the most ardent feminist shouldn’t take any pleasure from the fact that a young North Korean women serves this murderous regime capably and may be its future leader. And it is obscene to compare the influential servant of what may well be the world’s most brutal regime to Ivanka Trump.

What American mainstream media outlets like best of the dictator’s sister, I suspect, is that she enables them to claim that Vice President Pence, who is also in South Korea for the Olympics, has been upstaged. That’s the take of ABC News, for example. Our media’s hatred of President Trump, and of conservatives like Pence, runs so deep that it will shower praise on anyone who can be used as a foil, even a top associate of a murderous tyrant.”

  37. Say what you want, but the Norks have an obvious plan, and it’s working.

Their overarching goal is to drive a wedge between the ROK and the US. Part one was goading our Dotard-in-Chief into making increasingly ridiculous empty threats, completing their ICBM while he did nothing but rage on Twitter.

Part two went into operation with the Olympics, and involves seducing the ROK with the prospect of progress in their bi-lateral relationship. Simply getting invited to the games after spending the past year threatening the US with nuclear ICBM attack was a major coup that we should have never allowed. And Pence is playing right into their hands by saying idiotic things and making more EMPTY THREATS.

If the Norks having nuclear ICBMs that can hit the US is the new normal, then Spanky & Co. need to come out and admit their failure, and start the process of accommodating our policy to it. Otherwise, they need to stop making empty threats and DO something about it.

  43. Trump and Pence have been in office for a year, and so far state internal security forces have only forced me to watch public executions where enemies of the state are blown apart by anti-aircraft guns, what, four times? They do it at the local high school football stadium because the opposite end of the amphitheater provides a good backstop for the 25mm rounds. That’s nothing compared to the Kim regime, although feel free to share your experiences because maybe the program is further advanced in other parts of the country than here in Texas.

Jeet Heer is an idiot, so maybe we’ll see the above reported as actual news in one of his tweets (do I really need a sarc tag?). No, Trump and Pence haven’t done anything to make the Kim family look good by comparison. It takes a special form of insanity to even contemplate the thought.

It reminds me of how an actor decided to take center stage and lecture Mike Pence about how scared he was of the coming fascist dictatorship when Pence decided to catch the play Hamilton on Broadway.

This sort of public preening is an obscene form of moral cowardice. No actor in Nazi Germany would have dared to take center stage and lecture Hitler’s no. 2, Heinrich Himmler about his personal and political shortcomings. Why? Because Nazi Germany actually was a fascist dictatorship and that would have been suicide. Nobody in any actual dictatorship of any kind would dare do what this actor did. But by doing it, this actor demonstrated he knew perfectly well that Trump/Pence are not fascist dictators so he could rudely accost the V.P. in public in complete safety. While at the same time complaining about how scared he was for his safety.

He just demonstrated he wasn’t at all scared for his safety. As I said, it takes a special form of insanity to even contemplate the 21st century version of “Republicans are worse than Hitler.” Now it’s “Trump/Pence are worse than the Kim regime.”

By the way, if Kim Yo-Jong is Kim Jong Un’s answer to Ivanka Trump, shouldn’t der Donald have her brother assassinated to complete the analogy?

Few people other than the LHMFM, academics, the members of the CPUSA, and illegal immigration advocates believe that. This is why I don’t believe the GOP (for all its failings) won’t lose control of Congress and that Trump will win a second term. All the usual caveats about how a lot of things can happen between now and November, let alone 2020. But the more time that passes and people still reject the “Trump/Pence are worse than the Kim regime” insanity/stupidity the more the LHMFM doubles down on it.

It’s precisely because of low-intelligence loons like Heer that I don’t do twitter. But I was following his meltdown over at Twitchy. After he deleted the original tweet he decided everyone was being “deliberately obtuse” and do what I believe is called a tweetstorm. Where he tweets something, then quotes his own tweet an writes a follow-on tweet. Then repeat over again until the whole world wonders, somebody actually employs you? Because nobody was being obtuse except Heer who was clearly born that way. Along with stupid and insane, because as he detailed exactly what was going in his head that he confuses for thought everybody who witnessed his self-inflicted public humiliation had the satisfaction of knowing we had him correctly calibrated the first time. He’s a whackjob who if there’s anyone in his life that cares about him (big if) would have him committed against his will.

But he’s not alone. I expect more stories from outlets like CNN who are having a slobbering love affair over North Korea’s Director of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Worker’s Party of Korea. Or ABC that says CNN is wrong, it’s the 230 member NORK cheerleading team that is stealing everyone’s heart at the Olympics.

They’re not stealing anyone’s heart, again, unless you spent too much time in school getting dumbed down or already hated America.

And who can forget NBC’s Lester Holt, who along with his bosses decided he could more effectively carry the murderous dictator Kim Jong Un’s water if he was actually in tongue-bath range. So he went to North Korea and begged to be used as a propaganda tool.

    https://yesimright.com/nbc-reporter-goes-north-korea-likes-sees-sense-optimism/

Because it’s just WRONG not to hate Trump more than Kim Jong Un, Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin, or Hitler. We must hate Trump as much as the LHMFM and if we’re not getting the message it’s because were not merely bigots, racists, xenophobes, homophobes, Islamophobes, imperalists, colonialists, militarists, and running lackey dogs of the warmongering cisgendered heterosexual white male christofascist patriarchy.

We are deliberately obtuse bigots, racists, xenophobes, homophobes, Islamophobes, imperalists, colonialists, militarists, and running lackey dogs of the warmongering cisgendered heterosexual white male christofascist patriarchy. And we need to be lectured even more intensely.

  48. Dave @ 2/11/2018 @ 11:04 am, newsflash: South Koreans aren’t buying it. It has something to do with knowing that the NORK regime routinely beats, starves, imprisons in death camps, and murders their own citizen. Plus there’s the constant threatening to wipe out Seoul in a “sea of fire.”

Say what you want, but the Norks have an obvious plan, and it’s working.

It’s amusing that you think their plan is working, but then I haven’t been an amateur observer of the NORKs since the early 1990s. But thanks for your brilliant observation that the NORKs would like to drive a wedge between the U.S. and the South. That’s very original; no one has ever thought of that. And this must be, what, the 10th “charm offensive” the NORKs have tried since Kim Il Sung died. Nobody could have seen this coming. Nobody but you, Dave. Why don’t you write a point paper and send it to the Pentagon because we’re walking right into their trap.

We used to joke that for almost anyone else combining the words “charm” and “offensive” would be an oxymoron, but with the NORKs it was perfectly descriptive.

I’m also amused, based on the rest of your comment, that you seem to believe the V.P. headed the delegation to the winter Olympics without doing extensive coordination with the ROKs. Especially about the whole North Korean issue, not just the Nukes.

Get a grip, and don’t spout off about things you don’t know about. Unless of course you’re actually looking for work at CNN, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, the WaPo, the NYT, the LAT, etc.

    1) There is no other kind of ICBM other than nuclear so that’s a useless redundancy. Others have tried with other types of WMDs and learned it’s just an inefficient way of incinerating your chemical and biological agents.

    2) ICBM stands for Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. Again, another useless redundancy to say, “that can hit us.” Of course it would hit us. Unless you’re secretly Barack Obama, who though the US had built an “intercontinental railroad” back in the 19th century (the tales those engineers must have had to tell after driving those trains across the Pacific and Atlantic!). You don’t need an intercontinental ballistic missile to hit any target in Asia (the word our genius 44th President was looking for was transcontinental) because, ta da! It’s the same continent that the Korean peninsula juts out from. You need an intercontinental ballistic missile to hit other continents. And we sit on the only other continent worth aiming at.

    3) Yeah, if the NORKs have developed “nuclear ICBMs” it’s Trump’s fault entirely. It isn’t like anyone else had a hand in it…

    http://nsroundtable.org/files/8613/2917/4723/18938210308_kH4kW.jpg

It isn’t like Kim Il Sung started a missile R&D program back in the 1960s. No, we learn from Dave that the Norks have a magical ability to just s**t nuclear weapons and missiles out of their arses whenever they receive mean tweets. So within months they had a brand new capability that neither they nor us have ever imagined they’d acquire.

Thanks for the update, Dave. Why don’t you put that in your point paper and send it off the the Pentagon as soon as possible. You’ll wow them with your genius. And I’m not joking; there can be no other reaction other than, “Wow, Dave.”

  60. @ steve57, re your #43: That was a good read, sir. And Twitter delinda est.

Re how well the NORKs’ plan is working in South Korea, I genuinely dunno. I do know that useful idiots continue to try to help the NORKs.

I don’t live in South Korea, and have never been (but would love to go). I doubt many Americans noticed it at all, but I remember the sinking of the ROKS Cheonan. How, after that, you could invite that woman to sit on that platform, I’m not sure I understand; it’s not what I would have recommended, but it’s not my platform. Apparently it didn’t cause a riot, which is really kinda what I think it should’ve done, and might’ve elsewhere if you’d brought someone comparable into such a position.

I’ve no particular fault to find with VP Pence, although I confess that I have a hard time telling when he’s supposed to be acting stiff and wooden, as I’ve read him described, and the “regular” Mike Pence. I have done enough business litigation involving South Korean companies to have at least a modest grasp of the importance that the South Korean mega-conglomerates in that society; I’ve read that the South Korean military likewise punches above its weight politically; I can’t imagine that the leaders from either of those groups are much charmed. So I’m hoping, anyway, that this ends up being empty symbolism. Regardless, Olympic Games end; the NORKs haven’t changed and won’t. So something else will effectively overwrite most of the symbolism of this photo op, I likewise hope.

    Beldar (fa637a)

    Dana (023079)

  66. Dave you really think President Trump has that kind of juice? You’re mistaking him for President of the world.

Oh baloney. It was the ROKs who decided a month ago to bend all the rules to get the Norks into the games, even though none of them except two skaters had qualified, and even though they had missed all the deadlines. If the ROKs don’t know which side their bread is buttered on, it’s up to Spanky & Friends to focus their attention.

Instead, we have the humiliation of seeing the country that was threatening, just a couple months ago, to turn our cities to nuclear ash (while proving, with impunity, that they can) being given the royal red-carpet treatment by the ally that we’re putting everything on the line to defend – complete with cheering squads, dance troupes and the dictator’s evil bitch sister.

You mean VP Pence inviting Fred Warmbier, father of murdered Otto Warmbier, to sit in the box with him, while Kim Jong’s sister looks on, ducking her head in shame? I thought it a master stroke.

And that brought the Norks’ ICBMs closer to destruction, how, exactly?

    But I’ve apparently triggered Steve57:

    1) There is no other kind of ICBM other than nuclear so that’s a useless redundancy. Others have tried with other types of WMDs and learned it’s just an inefficient way of incinerating your chemical and biological agents.

The missile and warhead are two different systems; the combination of the two is a third (and more dangerous) system. When Trump took office, they had nukes, but not miniaturized to fit on a missile, and not missiles that could carry them to the US. Now they have both. #MAGA.

    2) ICBM stands for Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. Again, another useless redundancy to say, “that can hit us.” Of course it would hit us.

When Trump took office, their long-range missiles capable of carrying a nuke didn’t have the range to hit us. Now they do. #MAGA.

    3) Yeah, if the NORKs have developed “nuclear ICBMs” it’s Trump’s fault entirely. It isn’t like anyone else had a hand in it…

He’s been in office for more than a year while all was happening, and done NOTHING except violate the Twitter Terms of Service by making empty threats. During the Bush 43 era people actually sold “I’m afraid of George Bush” bumper stickers. You could stick those on your Prius and let every one else who had all the correct attitudes know that you shared all the same correct attitudes. But, if you’re really afraid of the dictator “Chimpy McHitlerBurton” you don’t stick a bumper sticker on your car telling the world that sort of thing. I don’t understand how people can engage in this sort of mindless attitude signaling (I realize the popular phrase is “virtue signaling” but this doesn’t even rise to that level) and can still just assume they’re at all bright.

I agree with you about the Cheonan (PCC-772). I spent a few pleasant hours aboard the Anyang (PCC-755) and the officers of the wardroom made me feel right at home even though the skipper felt compelled to apologize to me over lunch that, “We do not have the special food for foreigners” (I told him I was just fine with the excellent food they had served). Not the Cheonan’s sister ship but a patrol corvette in the preceding Donghae class. Very similar to the follow on Pohang class of which the Cheonan was one. Very similar, just slightly smaller with a more primitive weapons and sensor suite. It infuriated me seeing the Director of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Korean Workers Party sitting there. For all I know some of the officers and men who were so hospitable and gracious to me aboard the Anyang were killed when the NORKs sank the Cheonan.

Still, I understand the big picture. And I will let you in on this, Beldar. Yes, the NORKs have a plan. I don’t believe it’s working on anybody who doesn’t still want to be fooled (if you still want to be fooled, I’d say you have a bright future at CNN or ABC). But then we have a plan, too. This is the first NORK “charm offensive” we’ve been through. Absolutely everything Pence did had been choreographed with both the South Korean and Japanese governments. Everything from not standing for the entrance of the NORK athletes to supposedly snubbing the leading NORK official at ROK President Moon’s Olympic Eve reception.

I’m sure I don’t have to explain this to you, Beldar, but all of that was choreographed ahead of time. If you read the press reports they’ll say something like Pence was “expected” to sit across from the head of the NORK delegation and therefore honorary head of state. Moon had no such expectations. He knew Pence planned on only staying five minutes. And then not standing. Guess who was sitting to Pence’s left in the VIP box? Japanese PM Shinzo Abe. Who also didn’t stand for the NORK athletes. They were essentially actors who knew their roles perfectly. There were no surprises there for anybody, most especially including Moon’s government. People who emote instead of think didn’t seem to notice that everything was done on purpose, and for a reason.

    I never said that, liar.

Look, if the situation was too far gone to do anything about, Trump could have said “I’m giving up” and tried to blame it all on Obama. But he didn’t. He promised that everything that has happened in the last year wouldn’t happen. And he kept promising that it wouldn’t happen even after it had happened.

Did he promise to solve the problem? Yes.

Has he solved the problem? No.

Has the problem gotten worse instead? Yes.

Is there any indication that we can expect more than continued useless, empty bluster? No.

  97. Dave @ 2/11/2018 @ 1:38 pm, if by “trigger” you mean laughing out loud at your ridiculousness then yes you triggered me.

As for the details in your version of the House Intel Committee rebuttal to my comment, you’re absolutely crushing it, Dave. Make sure you put all those details in your point paper to the Pentagon.

The history of the problem is irrelevant – it’s gotten immeasurably worse during Trump’s first year, while he has done nothing except act like the clueless dolt he is.

    Dave (445e97) — 2/11/2018 @ 1:38 pm

Has it gotten immeasurably worse under Trump? “When Trump took office, they had nukes, but not miniaturized to fit on a missile.” That’s odd, Dave. The NORKs set off what they claimed to be a miniaturized nuclear (hydrogen) weapon on 6 January 2016. Oh, and in February 2016 NORAD reported publicly that the latest NORK attempt to place a satellite into orbit had been a complete in success. The satellite was stable in orbit and was active. The NORks had been claiming success since, I believe, 2011. But the satellites were tumbling in orbit and were essentially useless. We didn’t consider them a success. The NORKs considered them successes; they had after all put payloads into space, and they had achieved orbit. Really, it all depends on what they were trying to do, such as ballistic missile development. Now, stop me if I’m wrong, Dave, but 2016 wasn’t the first year of the Trump administration. But clearly you know that the NORKs claims couldn’t have possibly been true even though we do know their claims about their satellite launches were true even by our standards in February 2016.

Make sure you note in your point paper the exact state of the NORK nuclear/ballistic missile programs at 11:59a.m. 20 January 2017, the minute before Trump was sworn in as President. And cite your sources. That’s the kind of information the Pentagon is going to need to evaluate your claim that things have gotten immeasurably worse under Trump, and clearly you have this information at your fingertips. As I said earlier, I haven’t been an amateur observer of North Korea since the early 1990s. But then it’s a whole new ball game when we have a President named Obama who is stupid enough to infuse Iran, a country that has been cooperating with North Korea on nuclear and ballistic missile technology for years, with billions of billions of dollars worth of cash. I mean Obama admitted that “some” of that money would go to terrorism. I guess he didn’t have the imagination or intelligence to understand it might go to, umm, other projects. That kind of cash, unmarked bills in various currencies stacked on pallets and flown to Tehran in unmarked cargo planes, could conceivably speed things up. And, damn, I thought somebody in the vast apparatus of the executive branch might be doing something about it. But our government is broken, frozen in place, nobody working, as long as Trump has a twitter account.

Thanks for the inside information about Trump doing nothing. And thank you for expressing your interest in national defense.

  103. narciso @ 2/11/2018 @ 4:10 pm, yes, I know. And the February 2013 (which wasn’t Trump’s first year in office) could conceivably been such a weapon. But it wasn’t until January 2016 (also not Trump’s first year in office) that the NORKs publicly claimed they had successfully tested such a weapon.

But none of this can be right. All the really major advances that made our security situation exponentially worse (such as miniaturizing nuclear weapons to fit in ICBM warheads) couldn’t have possibly happened, according to Dave, until Trump’s first year in office.

    Steve57 (0b1dac)
