Chuck Schumer’s Words Come Back to Haunt Him

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 12:55 pm

These are possibly the most fun videos since the Lindsey Graham “how dare the press call Trump a kook” “I think he’s a kook” videos. It’s Chuck Schumer in 2013, repeatedly talking about how idiotic and absurd it would be to do precisely what he is now doing in 2018. The hypocrisy is staggeringly funny.

First, here’s Chuckles talking about the “politics of idiocy” that would be involved in shutting down the government for immigration reform:

And here he is, calling shutting down the government for immigration reform “governmental chaos”:

When he’s right, he’s right.

I’ve even seen some media outlets questioning the Democrat line that this is the GOP’s fault. Honestly, it’s almost unthinkable to me that the GOP could win a government shutdown messaging battle . . . yet it may be happening, because of how utterly hypocritical and clumsy Schumer & Co. are.

  13. The hypocrisy is roughly equivalent, as is the messaging ineptitude, but I think that this might turn out differently because the Dems have overplayed their hand. They’ve mis-timed it.

Your own side can believe the hill the party leadership has picked to fight on is a good hill, a valorous hill, a necessary hill, if there are looming consequences that are genuinely imminent.

Ted Cruz’ supporters in his Obamacare funding filibuster — I’m one — could credit him with acting in good faith precisely because the consequence he was trying to block (the funding) was indeed imminent.

A DACA deadline that’s still in March doesn’t meet that test. And the degree of GOP opposition to a DACA fix (especially if it is offset with GOP priorities like ending chain migration, real Wall funding, etc.) doesn’t remotely resemble the kind of cosmic clash of competing world-views that existed over Obamacare.

If ICE were rounding up Dreamers and cuffing them on the 6pm news, that’d be another story. But that’s not this, and that’s what they needed it to be in order to be sure of winning the PR fight again.

The Las Vegas PD has published its preliminary report on last October’s mass shooting.

They have not been able to identify a motive, or connect the shooter to any ideology. There is no evidence that he was “radicalized” or affiliated to any group.

He left no manifesto or suicide note. The only written item found in his hotel room was a calculation of bullet trajectories.

There is no evidence that he had accomplices.

He owed no one money, and paid all his gambling debts off prior to the attack.

Apart from a minor muscle injury suffered three years earlier, he was physically healthy, but his primary-care physician suspected he was bipolar.

Between 1982 and September 2016, he (lawfully) purchased 29 firearms. From October 2016 through September 2017, he (lawfully) purchased over 55 firearms and over 100 firearm related accessories including scopes, cases and bump stocks.

There was evidence that he did internet searches for outdoor concert crowd sizes almost six months before the attack. A week before the attack, he stayed at a condominium complex overlooking another outdoor music festival in Las Vegas, and brought dozens of suitcases into his unit, just as he did at Mandalay Bay. Prior to that, he had reservations for hotel overlooking a festival in Chicago during August, but cancelled them two days before check-in.

He had no criminal record, and his only contact with police had been for minor traffic citations. He had some child porn on one of his computers (his brother was arrested on child porn charges shortly after the attack), but otherwise the report says he committed no crime until he fired the first shot into the crowd from his hotel room.

Absolutely. After ousting the Taliban, Saddam’s Iraq was the next obvious target. Sanctions were hurting the wrong people; Oil for Food was making the worst people rich; diplomacy never would have worked. Saddam’s forces were shooting at our planes on a daily basis. The Civil War, which ole Honest Abe instituted the income tax as a temporary measure to cover the cost of, which bumped the national debt from $65 million to $2,773 million, has never been paid for.

I know that 2 ~ 3 billion is a footnote in today’s money but that’s only because after making the income tax permanent and making fiat currency inflation an annual (and now semi-annual) event a hundred and fifty years of the Mugabi treatment has obscured the true measure of the outlay.

At any rate the Civil War has still yet to be paid for. We’ve just carried the $2 Billion forward year after year. And added more for each subsequent war.

Immigration authorities have detained in recent weeks two prominent activists who are themselves illegal immigrants, demonstrating the Trump administration’s commitment to expand the pool of deportable aliens.

The arrested men have openly lived in the U.S. for years and have until recently enjoyed a de facto immunity from deportation, thanks to their status as high-profile immigrants’ rights activists.

Both men are leaders of the New Sanctuary Coalition of New York City, a network of religious and social organizations that works to prevent the detention and deportation of illegal immigrants. ICE officers first detained Jean Montrevil, a Haitian national who had lived in the U.S. since 1986 despite having served a prison term for drug possession that resulted in a deportation order.

Montrevil, who co-founded the New Sanctuary coalition, was taken into custody in early January near his home in Queens, touching off a firestorm of protest. Activists accused ICE of breaking an “understanding” that Montrevil would not be arrested while he appealed his order of removal. Despite the public outcry, ICE deported Montrevil to Haiti on Tuesday.

The week before Montrevil’s removal, ICE arrested Ravidath Ragbir during his check-in with officials at the ICE office in New York.

The executive director of New Sanctuary and the public face of immigration activism in New York City, Ragbir came to the U.S. in 1991 as a legal permanent resident, but he was ordered deportation in 2006 following a wire fraud conviction for which he served a two-and-a-half year prison sentence.

The severity of Ragbir’s offense is debatable, but his conviction for wire fraud in a $400,000 mortgage embezzlement scheme was upheld in in 2002 by 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, President Donald Trump’s sister.

Since that ruling, Ragbir has used his prominence in the activist community to successfully obtain several stays of removal. But the Trump administration’s more expansive immigration enforcement priorities appear to have closed the door for good.

You do realize the House voted to make us pay for it a few days ago.

The government is currently shut down because the Senate couldn’t pass the same thing.

So it’s a bit dishonest to pretend that soaking the American taxpayers (or more accurately, their children and grandchildren) for tens of billions of dollars to pay for something Donald Trump promised he would get from Mexico for free is merely some abstract, speculative possibility.

It could easily happen today or tomorrow.

  47. Never mind Trump’s (and the Freedom Caucus’s) ongoing basic math problem. There aren’t 51 united Republican votes in the Senate without progress on immigration. And there sure as hell aren’t 51 votes to go nuclear. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was forced to reiterate that Sunday morning, issuing a statement that “The Republican Conference opposes changing the rules on legislation.” But now the House Freedom Caucus, which has thus far been controlling House Speaker Paul Ryan, really has something to sink their teeth into—a president backing up their unrealistic demands.

They want to keep them outside of America so they will be perpetually dependent on the left and their paltry goods. Think the Soviets and bread lines.

Not surprisingly, the loss of comity over the decades has coincided with the rise of the media’s “thumb on the scale” influence. The Dems take ridiculous gambles because they know succuss sometimes has little to do with it’s actual popularity with voters.

  88. Ben Burn,

I think there is caring on both sides off all these issues, but they are difficult issues because they all require balancing. No side can always win and be fair. For example, unlimited abortion is fair to mothers but not to the aborted babies, some of whom could have had lives worth living. SSM rights benefit gays and lesbians but it does impact religious beliefs. And for every illegal immigrant who comes to America, there is an impact on immigrants who want to come legally and find the door is basically closed.

Caring only for the side you approve of doesn’t mean you are the only person who cares.

Of primary importance – at least to me – are securing the borders, eliminating chain migration (where the real numbers lay) enforcing our current immigration-related laws before any work on other “reforms”. If this were done, we wouldn’t need much in the way of other immigration reform, at least as I see it.

And for every illegal immigrant who comes to America, there is an impact on immigrants who want to come legally and find the door is basically closed.

That is really not the case. The number of illegal immigrants has no effect on the number of legal immigrants allowed. They are not counted against it. It is not as if the more illegal immigration is stopped the more legal immigration Congress will authorize.

In fact, if anything it is the opposite. Historically, the more illegal immigration, the more legal immigration because illegal immigration is the incentive to Congress to allow more legal immigration. It’s just not working out that way right now.

That doesn’t make any sense, because legal immigrants aren’t desperate.

I think you might mean would-be legal immigrants.

They should, and do, care more abouit desperate illegal immigrants than desperate would be (legal) immigrants because the illegal immigranmts are already here, and they see them and they interact with them, and deporting them ruins their lives while prohibiting legal immigration in many casxes merely crushes their dreams.

Reopublicans also think Democrats care more about illegal immigranst ebvcause they wantt o trade off legalzing DACA for restriuting futurer legal immigration. But they actually don’t care that much.

  174. I just read about Chile’s immigration policy. (I am wondering if Milton Feiedman had anything to do with thsi)

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/as-u-s-slows-immigration-one-latin-american-nation-embraces-it-1516539600

Haitians and other migrants enter Chile on tourist visas. If they obtain job contracts before their visas expire, they can apply for work permits and, eventually, permanent residence…

…Gabriela Cabello, the current director of Chile’s immigration office, said the existing policy discourages illegal immigration while creating strong incentives for migrants to find jobs, pay taxes and keep their status regular. Clandestine border crossings by Haitians are almost nonexistent, while crime rates are “extremely low,” she said.

…Haitian migration here can be traced to 2004, when ties between the countries were strengthened when Chile sent troops to the Caribbean nation to help lead a U.N. peacekeeping mission. At the time, Chile’s economy was booming. After Canada, it has the lowest homicide rate in the Western Hemisphere, the World Bank says. ..

…Migration quickly increased after the 2010 earthquake and subsequent cholera epidemic, as those who arrived in Chile encouraged their friends and family back home to come..

Theer’;s now abt of a backlash, but more because of specious logic than anything in reality. New haitians are now having more trouble finmding jobs – but that oif course just cuts the flow.

Actually the reverse. Chain migration means new immigrants have an in place support system on arrival, immigrants who have no family here basically sink or swim on their own.

  195. “One of the Left’s great “humanitarian” bleats involves the “right” to bring one’s extended family to the United States once an “immigrant” arrives here. Normally, the radical Left has no use for traditional, consanguineous families, regarding them as prima facie evidence of racism, sexism, the patriarchy, white supremacy, and just about every other current cultural-Marxist yapping point. Ah, but when it comes to their ultimate goal — the destruction of the U.S. and the West — they’re all for them:

While President Trump has his eyes on curbing illegal immigration, federal rules are allowing legal immigrants to “sponsor” several more family members from their countries, according to the Department of Homeland Security. On average, legal immigrants have been sponsoring three additional immigrants. And newly arrived Mexicans are sponsoring an additional six family members.
The statistics analyzed by the Center for Immigration Studies find that sponsorships exceed initial immigration numbers.

Called “chain migration” because the first immigrant acts as a link to many others legally allowed to follow, the practice is having a huge impact on the U.S. Sponsors are “native-born citizens or naturalized citizens.” Jessica Vaughan, the director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, reported that in the last 10 years half the 10.6 million immigrants allowed into the country were “initiating” and the rest sponsored followers. Over the last 35 years, over 60 percent were sponsored.

This is how El Norte becomes Mexico, and the West turns into the Third World.”

    Colonel Haiku (27c440)

  196. It’s worse than that, Haiku. It promotes illegal immigration. By having extended relatives eat up the quota, the only option Mexicans without family already here have is to enter illegally. I hope, hope, hope, that Trump gets it down to only the spouse and minor children of the green card (and U.S. citizens of course). If he does, I promise not to say anything bad about him for at least a week.

    nk (dbc370)

  197. Agree, nk… here’s more…

“Legalizing Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) will have a feel good after-effect, but will also produce many negatives. The government estimates there are 800,000 in the DACA category, but history shows us the government greatly underestimates the numbers of illegal immigrants. It estimated there were 1 million illegal immigrants who would be legalized in 1986, and it turned out to be 2.7 million.
With just the Dreamers we can speculate there will be around 800,000, but that still doesn’t take into account their relatives. Once “Dreamers” become lawful, permanent residents, they are allowed to sponsor their immediate family members. “NumbersUSA,” an advocacy group that seeks to reduce legal and illegal immigration, estimates this would be around 3 million people….”

No, this is a good opportunity to horse trade. 700,000 Dreamers in exchange for unknown number of adult, non-spouse, relatives by amending the INA.

    nk (dbc370)

  201. 204.I don’t know, Hoagie. You’re the one who complained the Left was trying to “de-whiten” America.

Kishnevi, you have a tendency to be over sensitive to anything even close to a statement on race which in any way could be positive for whites or negative for POC. Perhaps being Jewish makes you more sensitive to perceived bigotry than other people although I’ve associated with Jewish people all my life including my step grandfather and first wife and none of them were like that. If I said the left was trying to de-whiten America I spoke my observations of the policies of the left. They encourage poor people from countries which are not white to immigrate to America. At least that’s what I see. Is the argument about Dreamers about Englishmen or Hispanics? Are people being shipped in from Denmark or Africa and the Middle East? If that doesn’t constitute de-whitening what does? Why is it important to racially diversify America which is already a very diverse nation compared to just about any others when it isn’t important to diversify Kenya or Japan or Indonesia? Why America, Europe, Canada, Australia? The only answer is to dilute the white race and Western Culture. Unless you know of another. Since 2005 we have resettled into the US 3,000,000 chain migrants. Why?

It does not benefit America to nationalize 900,000 poor Hispanics. Nor 2,000,000 impoverished Africans and Moslems. There is no plus side, only negatives unless I’m missing something.

What in earth did you mean by that? Given your actual family, you couldn’t have meant that literally. So what did you mean? And how do expect people who don’t know you to react when they see you say that?

Of course I meant it literally because it’s literally true. The racial makeup of my family who are Americans has nothing to do with the importation of millions upon millions of new immigrants. I expect people to react intellectually and not emotionally the way so many have been programed by the left to react. The racists are not the ones pointing out the deliberate racial transformation of predominantly white countries. The real racists are the ones doing it for the nefarious reason of political power. The leaders of these countries are importing millions and millions of new voters guaranteed to keep them in power as long as they provide food, clothing and shelter for them and their extended families. At the expense of the citizens they are brought in to replace of course.

I talk about race freely because I’m not afraid of being called a racist. I let how I lead my life show whether or not I’m a racist. The only real racist I currently know is my own grandson. He has decided that white people have been oppressing him and “The Jooos” are their leaders. And he “learned” this sh!t at college. Now that’s racism, Kishnevi. Not pointing out the fact that our immigration policy is slowly making whites a minority in their own country.

    Rev.Hoagie (6bbda7)

  202. “A new poll released by Harvard-Harris shows that a staggering percentage of voters on all ends of the political spectrum are overwhelmingly in favor of an immigration deal that would end Chain Migration, eliminate the Visa Lottery, and grant amnesty to DACA recipients.

According to the poll, 65% of voters would support a DACA deal that secures the Southern border, ends Chain Migration, and eliminates the Visa Lottery. A majority of voters from nearly every demographic group would support the deal, including 68% of Hispanic voters, 64% of African American voters, 64% of Democratic voters, 67% of all independent voters, 63% of liberal voters, and 68% of those who voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election cycle.

The poll also reveals that 60 percent of voters oppose giving preference to parents who illegally brought their children to the U.S. The Durbin-Graham no-strings DACA amnesty offered in the Senate would give amnesty to the parents.

The poll found that 81% of voters want to reduce legal immigration from its current level of more than 1 million per year, and 63% want it cut by at least half.”
