SNL Takes On Fire And Fury

Filed under: General — Dana @ 1:05 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Last night’s SNL cold open was pretty funny as it centered on Michael Wolff’s Fire and Fury and Steve Bannon’s ejection from Trumpland:

When the veracity of the book is questioned by “Mika” and “Joe,” Armisen’s “Wolff” responds:

You read it, right? And you liked it? You had fun? What’s the problem. You got the gist, so shut up. Even the stuff that’s not true was true.

Who knows how much of the book is fact and how much is fiction, but some skepticism seems to be in order:

Twenty years ago, the now-defunct Brill’s Content took a hard look at Wolff’s book Burn Rate, a memoir of his time as a dot-com hustler, and charged that one of his characters was actually a composite of three people. Likewise, seven of Wolff’s main characters and six others who were either portrayed in or familiar with events in his book claimed he “invented or changed quotes,” and none remembered him taking notes on or taping their discussions…

Personally, I’ve enjoyed reading Wolff over the years. You can call him many things (see the preceding paragraph), but never dull. I do not know Wolff nor can I vouch for his credibility. Though I should add that a mutual acquaintance of ours, after spotting an anecdote he’d casually tossed off to Wolff turn up in Fire and Fury, reported this to me of Wolff’s seemingly slack methodology: “[He got it] from me, which I got from a woman on the beach in Florida, who heard it in a carpool line. Literally. I had no idea he was including it. That guy is a serious bullshit artist. Wow.”

With this, though, it’s good to bear in mind that Trump continually provides plenty of fodder for his critics as he continues to shoot himself in the foot on a regular basis, whether through outrageous lies, petty, self-serving attacks which end up foolishly distracting the public from any positive accomplishments, or his latest comments made about “shitholes”. And although you may defend him and attack his critics with silly accusations of TDS, I say let the adult, who holds the highest office in the land assume responsibility for the words that come out of his own undisciplined mouth. Because in this latest kerfuffle, Trump likely said precisely what he intended to say and has been accused of saying:

Untitled

(Preemptive strike: It seems ridiculous to have to say this, but attempting to simply reduce this issue to be one of a president using profanity – which Erickson is not doing – is as dumb as trying to make the issue not be about a sitting president announcing his preference for a certain kind of people at the expense of another people. The president’s juvenile take on immigrants, race and class: White people from prosperous nations obviously make the best immigrants because prosperous and white. Poor black and brown people from third-world countries don’t make the best immigrants because poor and not white. Ergo, good citizens come only from rich, white nations, and bad citizens come only from poor, non-white nations. )

The Saturday Night Live sketch was good. It could be enjoyed by people with many different points of view. (A little overdone on Joe and Mika’s romance, but that’s a SNL trope, and they didn’

  65. To repeat the obvious to those who have not gotten it : There is a difference between a country and it’s inhabitants. For example, many countries can be classified as “s**t holes” yet have inhabitants that are highly prized for their individual talents. Haiti is one such country as is evidenced by the Represenative. Both India and China had been considered “s**t holes” for centuries but immigrants from those countries were highly successful in their adopted countries.

    Michael Keohane (947544)

  66. 66.To repeat the obvious to those who have not gotten it : There is a difference between a country and it’s inhabitants. For example, many countries can be classified as “s**t holes” yet have inhabitants that are highly prized for their individual talents.

The obvious is that a country is the way it is because of it’s inhabitants. If Haiti or Somalia are Sh!tholes it’s because the Haitians and Somalis made them that way. It sure wasn’t the Koreans! Or the Mormons! And just because a few “individuals” are “highly prized”(?) for their talents it certainly does not mean “most” are. Or even the majority. Haiti and the vast overwhelming majority of it’s “inhabitants” are not “highly prized” for anything.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic share an island. The GDP of Haiti is $8b USD, that of the DR is $71b USD. Average income per year: Haiti $409 per annum, DR $2,100. Still low but 5x Haiti. When under French rule Haiti was the richest colony in the New World. I wonder what changed?

I tried to read the history of Haiti to find out why it is the way it is. What I got from the several contributing writers was a list beginning with the slave revolt that broke away from France that included hurricanes, pirates, the French, the Americans, periodic bad weather, and Poppa Doc and Baby Doc as reasons why Haiti is a sh!tholes. IOW, the writers blamed everything but the people of Haiti for the condition of Haiti. Yet the only thing that hasn’t changed over 200 years are the people of Haiti.

They remind me of leftist pols in America who when writing about the mess the inner cities are fail to note they have been and still are run by democrats employing the same economic policy used in Haiti. And the people in those sh!tholes ghettos have been born and breed into a system of welfare and dependency by their democrat overlords for at least four generation now. Yet not one democrat ever says: Hey, maybe we should listen to the conservatives and try something different. Do you know why? Because the object of their welfare isn’t the actual welfare of the victims. It’s to keep them chattel and steal their votes for an EBT card. And that’s the very reason they want to import people from sh!tholes countries. To replace the current ghetto dwelling democrat voters and their aborted offspring at the polls. Same reason they want felons to vote. Same reason they want no voter ID.

    Rev.Hoagie (6bbda7)

  67. Right on, Hoagie! Why is the coldest place in the contiguous United States in Minnesota? Because the Norwegians who made Norway a frozen sh!thole settled in Minnesota bringing the cold with them, that’s why!

    nk (dbc370)

  68. Those damn Norwegians!

    Rev.Hoagie (6bbda7)

  69. Norwegian, a Swede and a Dane made a bet about who could stay the longest in a stinky pig barn. They all went in at the same time. After only two minutes the Dane came running out. Five minutes later the Swede stumbled out the door. After ten minutes, all the pigs ran out.

    ===================================================

Ole called the airlines information desk and inquired, “How long does it take ta fly from Minneapolis to Fargo?

“Just a minute,” said the busy clerk.

“Vell, said Ole, “if it has to go dat fast, I tink I’ll yust take da bus.”

    Colonel Haiku (6724fa)

  70. If you’re really serious about why places are sh!tholes, the most common factor across all of them is homogeneity. Lack of diversity. An inbred population, all thinking the same way and all doing things the same way, especially if they are also insular — though that’s chicken and egg question — shut off from outside influences. For an advanced society, this leads to decadence and decline. For a primitive society, this means staying mired in the mud.

    nk (dbc370)

  71. Except how do you explain the japanese, once they got rid of the ainu.
And then compare Sicily which has certainly been crosspolinated, I think the better explanation was that put forth by tiger mom in her second book:

    narciso (d1f714)

  72. @71. I couldn’t disagree more, nk. There are so many examples as to why a homogeneous population is superior it’s ubiquitous. Homogeneous society is not “shut off from outside influences”, it just refuses to allow outsiders to join. Japan didn’t invent the car, the cell phone or Velcro but they use them. They just won’t allow you to become a Japanese citizen. They welcome your “influences” just not your presents.

And what is leading to the decline on our modern “advanced” societies such as France, Germany, Netherlands, America and more is not homogeneous populations but the exact opposite. The introduction of immigrants from sh!tholes into a previously First World nation is bringing down the entire country. Toss in the refusal of said immigrants to assimilate, learn the language and respect the laws and there you have the reason behind the “decadence and decline”. Having your women raped in the streets by invaders and being too PC to do something about it is the culmination of the belief in tolerance and diversity.

America was not made strong by immigration as the left would have you believe. America was mad strong by forcing immigrants to become Americans. In fact from 1921 to 1965 there was no legal immigration at all. Zero. Nada. That was because we insisted that the previous deluge of immigrants fully and unconditionally assimilate before we admitted more. There was even a period there of reverse immigration where those who could not toe the line returned home. Good riddance to them.

No, nk. Lack of diversity is strength not weakness. That’s why the motto is E Pluribus Unum and not Diversity First.

    Rev.Hoagie (6bbda7)

  73. Seriously? The Japanese were already civilized Chinese who settled Japan around 600 AD, the way the Europeans settled the New World around 1500. And what were they like by the time Commodore Perry went there? Or for that matter, when MacArthur went there?

Same thing with the Koreans. Until we went there, after WWII, all of Korea had been, for millennia, like North Korea is now. A regressive feudal society, ruled by despots, with most of the population living on the ragged edge of starvation. It was exposure to the outside that has made South Korea practically a Western country.

  86. Just last month, Nunes was digging in and refusing to let Democrats call obvious witnesses. So the news that HPSCI will interview two key Trump people with whom Mueller has not yet met makes it clear — if it wasn’t already — that Nunes is trying to identify everything that Mueller might learn, so that he can then give Trump a clean bill of health and insist the entire investigation was just a political stunt drummed up from the Steele dossier (which is what Paul Manafort seems to have recommended last year).

And as all these machinations have gone on, Trump has vacillated about whether or not he’ll submit to an interview with Mueller. Perhaps Nunes has told him that the one thing that might make Mueller’s case is either a confirmation or denial from the President whether he knew or attended that June 9 meeting?

But if he thought about it he would realize diversity is the lefts way of introducing balkanization in a deceitful way. There is nothing “strong” about having documents printed in ten languages. There is nothing admirable or “American” about bringing in millions of Third World people, putting them on the dole and forcing hard working Americans pay for their upkeep. That’s not adding strength to America, it’s sapping the life from America. Finally, immigration has become the method of choice for recruiting democrat voters ever since the dems began killing their babies and needed replacements. We all know it so why won’t they admit it? I bet if 80% of immigrants became Republican conservatives the democrats and noel would become anti immigrant over night.

But then after Trump became president, he reversed himself and agreed to honor the One China policy. Bookbinder says shortly thereafter, Trump was awarded about three dozen valuable trademarks.

“We don’t know if there was a link between the change in the president’s policy choice and a benefit to his companies,” Bookbinder says. “But as long as he has those companies and is receiving those benefits, we’re going to have to question what his motivation was.”

Not in a national population it isn’t. Diversity is fine on a used car lot but it makes a very messy body politic. When you have all kinds of ethnic groups pulling from each other you don’t have unity if purpose. You can see the result of diversity on how we fight, and no longer win wars. Or how well our “space program” is doing. Or how well the “war” on poverty or drugs went. These are all grand undertakings that require a people to be united in the cause. If you can’t see we are no longer “united” you are willfully blind.

But to say that “lack of diversity is a strength” when you have a diverse family of your own, is beyond strange. What is “diversity ” to you?

Diversity the way that is meant in the immigration debate means cultural and social dissolution. It means dividing America. You hear it all the time when they say: Respect of other people’s culture. Hell no. Respect our culture, this is America not Haiti, Somalia, England or Norway. If you want your culture go back to your country. My wife cooks Korean food. We have kim-chee all over the house. She’ll even have a little get together February 16 for Chinese New Year. But she knows it’s Feb. 16 and there will be no Mummers Parade. BTW, she has a Christmas tree, stocking and presents as well as an Easter basket, but she’s Buddhist.

So the best I can say is diversity is individual but not a government program. Now I really gota go, I’m late.

if I have you correct, you just believe in America First. If the people who come here want to be American, support American ideals and values, which includes coming here legally, they are welcome. If they are here for a handout and just want to keep their way of life, but benefit from the forced generosity of the American worker, they can leave.

The reason the left is so against assimilation, is it keeps people separated and only looking out for their own groups’ interests. They benefit from that division because they know by keeping groups at each others’ throats they will constantly be able to offer more “benefits” to these groups than their political opponents. At least until the entire nation collapses from the weight of the division and the debt.

    NJRob (b00189)

  154. We don’t have shared values any longer because academia and liberalism have forced onto society the PC view that morals and values are relative, and the Judeo-Christian value system that has formed the foundation of this country for a couple centuries shouldn’t be “imposed” on those who come to the US with a value system different than the one they find here.

Instead immigrant communities are allowed to establish their own little city and nation-states in locales where they mass. And in many of these enclaves little changes from the way they lived their life in their “sh!thole” homelands, other than the geography.

And to raise a point of disagreement with the Host’s comments from yesterday, “sh!thole” countries are a reflection of the collective population which inhabits them. I understand the crux of the point being made that its “racist” to tar every resident as being a reflection of the place where they originate.

But at what point is the US entitled to say “The state of affairs in Haiti/Iran/Syria/Nigeria/Chad/etc., is a reflection of the population that lives there”, and justify immigration judgments categorically as a result?

As I understand the reporting on Trump’s comment, certain countries that are identified as having been the subject of Trump’s description were being discussed because they have specific “favored” status in current US immigration policy. I’m not suggesting the specifics because I don’t know them — I’m guessing Haiti has to do with the humanitarian crisis that began in the 1980s with refugees fleeing the Papa Doc regime, but was greatly enhanced following the humanitarian crisis caused by the earthquake in 2010.

Durbin and Graham came to the WH to press a “Clean DACA” bill, but found Trump wanting to discuss a more comprehensive approach — with Sens. Cotton and Perdue in the room — and began discussing how to deal with these preferences for certain countries that exist in the current immigration system, but would be eliminated in a comprehensive reform unless dealt with in other ways. That led to Trump’s comment which was basically — “Why do we have these preferences in the first place?”

That reflects a lack of historical understanding of how these preferences came about — going back to the Civil Rights era inspired Immigration Act of 1965. That bill eliminated specific numerical quotas for different regions of the world that dated back decades, but which were seen as “racist” basis to keep non-European immigrants from being allowed to immigrate. So the 1965 Act eliminated numerical quotas, and made every country equal to every other country.

But that system actually created unintended barriers for immigrants coming from poor countries because it basically created “equality” between immigrant applicants from Norway and Haiti — as an example.

So over many decades a variety of “preferences” were put in place in immigration policy to insure that more applicants from certain preferred countries were allowed to immigrate in the interests of diversity, and to help address the problem of oppressed.

The hardliners, and Trump’s POV, is simply to question at what point are we — as a country — entitled to stop allowing ever increasing immigration numbers on that basis?

I’m back. First off my “family” aren’t immigrants, my wife is. And what I’m saying is my wife is not Korean-American and my son is not African- American any more than I am German-American. We’re just American. Legitimate, card carrying, voting, tax-paying, b!tching Americans. They don’t expect anybody to give them anything special. My wife doesn’t expect forms, signs and menus in Korean. What country they are from as I’ve said makes little difference except that many countries have few people who would better America and bringing in immigrants is all about what makes America better, not worse off. Bringing in the poor, uneducated, sick, or what have you does not help America. Now, if you’re willing to go back to 1920 and eliminate all forms of welfare, support, free education, free medical and require each and every immigrant be thoroughly checked for disease and criminal records then we can take anybody from anywhere. Because they will self-deport fast if they can’t assimilate. But if we’re going to bring sh!theads in from sh!thole countries and subsidize them with the money that should be going to our own families then I say no, they got to go. I don’t need to take money from my kids to pay for the democrat voter drive and the SJW “diversity” for Europeans and Americans only progromme.

BTW, noel. People either assimilate or they don’t. I know, I deal with them and there have been times when I looked in a persons eyes and told them they’d be happier going back to China or Korea or whatever. They were just never going to become an American and we need people who are. It’s sad but just as everybody can’t be as handsome as I am or as smart as you, everybody isn’t cut out to assimilate.

According to historian Walter Kamphoefner, a “number of big cities introduced German into their public school programs”.[141] Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland and other cities “had what we now call two-way immersion programs: school taught half in German, half in English”.[141] This was a tradition which continued “all the way down to World War I.”[141] According to Kamphoefner, German “was in a similar position as the Spanish language is in the 20th and 21st century”; it “was by far the most widespread foreign language, and whoever was the largest group was at a definite advantage in getting its language into the public sphere.”[141] Kamphoefner has come across evidence that as late as 1917, a German version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” was still being sung in public schools in Indianapolis.[141]

  176. I am a devout believer in the truth. Which means I have to listen to a lot of words. Many of those words come out or the mouths of people I don’t agree with.
