Durbin: The Term “Chain Migration” Is Offensive to Blacks
So as we all know, Donald Trump issued a series of tweets this morning concerning the allegation that he called Haiti and African countries “sh*thole countries.” Trump said “this was not the language used” — but specifically denied only 1) that he insulted Haitians as opposed to criticizing their country, and 2) that he said “take them out” about Haitians. (Some interpreted this as a denial of the “sh*thole countries” phrase; I’m not so sure.) Then Senator Dick Durbin came out and said that, yes, Trump did say all that — although apparently he used the word “sh*tholes” to describe African countries, not Haiti. Durbin even said the word “sh*thole” out loud.
OK, fine. I want to focus on a different aspect of Durbin’s statement — because it shows his ability to be absurdly sanctimonious with a straight face. Namely, he claims that he told the President that “chain migration” is offensive to black people, because they came here in chains. Yes, he really said that. Here’s the video of Durbin:
DURBIN: When it came to the issue of “chain migration” I said to the President: “Do you realize how painful that term is to so many people? African Americans believe that they migrated to America in chains. And when you speak about ‘chain migration’ it hurts them personally.” He said: “Oh, that’s a good line.”
You have to hand it to Durbin, that he was able to pull that off without cracking up.
Oh well. Trump loves to stoke racially charged controversies, especially on the long weekend when the country celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Now Trump has a “let’s fight black people” kerfuffle to last him the whole holiday weekend. Last year he attacked civil rights leader John Lewis at the beginning of the MLK Day weekend. This year, it’s calling African countries “sh*tholes.” It’s what he likes to do.
By the way, I guess this is kinda burying the lede, but this blog has obtained exclusive audio of the President’s remarks on immigrants. It turns out that he was profane, but everybody got the quote wrong, as you can hear in this short clip from the meeting. Must Credit Patterico!

When I worked in the Caribbean/Latin America I saw some incredibly beautiful areas including beaches transformed into absolute s**tholes because of ignorance, criminality, poverty and neglect. You can not deny that this is partially due to the culture.
Asking to filter out these cultural aspects and insisting on admitting only those applicants who have already demonstrated an ability to rise above it is not racism, it’s common sense.

What is offensive about it is the idea that some countries are better than others, and that blacks are inferior and of lower quality. And what’s perverse about this is that immigration by blacks, whether from the Caribbean or from Africa, improves all sociological indicators among blacks and reduces the amount of social pathology among blacks in the United States. Colleges use immigrants to fill racial quotas. (Oprah Winfrey has noted that the students she supports in South Africa want to go to school. That might be because their parents are paying for it and nobody is forced to attend)
Sropping “chain migration” (which could be called favoring families) was dead anyway, but now it’s really, really dead, and if that’s a condition of passing a budget, (because DACA is a condition and stopping chain migration is made condition of DACA) then the budget process is dead.

Titled Country of Origin Matters, it may be the closest attempt I’ve read yet to a partial justification of Trump’s sh!thole remarks. The most effective argument he makes may be this one:
I agree that our immigration policy ought to be about what’s best for the United States. We can, do, and should take due account of would-be immigrants’ political persecution, and their refugee status from wars and disasters. But we have these limited asylum and refugee programs in the first place because being compassionate, indeed an international leader in compassion, is a part of our enlightened self-interest on a long-term historic basis. But compassion is for these exceptional situations; and even in them, compassion is only one of the interests to be weighed in the balance.
So I agree in substantial part with Lowry: For the overwhelming majority of potential immigrants, we can and should be considering our benefits from admitting them legally within our borders — not the prospective benefits to the would-be legal immigrants. And I definitely agree that it’s useful to keep that frame of reference in mind throughout these discussions!
Lowry also attempts a bit of rhetorical jiu-jitsu, effectively re-defining “sh!thole” to mean those countries with poor educational systems, posting, he said,
The tables do support his assertions, and I have no quibble with anything in his argument before its final phrase: “… and there are clear patterns based on national origin.”
I don’t even quibble with his assertions about what the patterns are. We’re none of us surprised, indeed, that potential immigrants from Norway will indeed tend, as evidenced in the statistics, to be better educated than those from Haiti.
What I quibble with instead is the assumption that we should use those clear patterns, those statistics, associated with country of origin, when we have available to us instead the specific educational achievements of the individual would-be legal immigrants.
Why would we use a vague stereotype when we have data that generate statistics? That would be inefficient and ineffective. But likewise: Why should we use national statistics when we can look at an individual applicant’s actual educational achievements?
Sure, we want to prioritize people whose achievements make them good choices, from our own national perspective, for immigration. And we want to do it with the best accuracy — not because we’re being compassionate, but because we’re being clear-eyed and want the best data. It’s in our best interest to individualize — and it’s therefore contrary to our best interests to grade and judge based specifically on country of origin, whether a sh!thole or its opposite.
And then, as part of that individualized assessment, when we’re considering not just a particular applicant’s country of origin but everything else about his origin too, we can make an individualized determination of whether coming from a sh!thole country, and having a demonstrated history of successfully overcoming challenges there, makes a particular applicant a relatively better choice for us, as compared to someone else who came from a “first world” country with a great overall educational system (but lacked such a personal record of accomplishment against odds).

Here in NJ the best football players are driven daily to/from the Catholic high schools and if the family cannot afford the tuition – which is often – the “recruits” receive a needs-based scholarship. The best Catholic high school teams play each other, but also have to play some of their games against out-of-state powerhouses to a) get nationally ranked and b) have enough games to play since the public schools just cannot compete with them. For example, Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey (Jesuit) has in the past played teams from California, Florida, Ohio, South Carolina, Louisiana, etc. For all intents and purposes these Catholic schools are farm teams for Div I football teams with coaches having relationships with specific college teams.
The Catholic schools here are renowned for their academic rigor and development of boys into men, going beyond academics and athletics. They have also resisted leftist infiltration.

For decades now, Reagan loyalists have resisted the notion that the former president was symptomatic while he was president. (I posited that he was in my book, and heard later that the Reagan people were not happy about it.) So, when the current president* broached the subject, Craig Shirley, a career Reagan hagiographer, and John Heubusch, the president of the Ronald Reagan Foundation, leaped into print at CNN.com to argue that Reagan had not shown any symptoms until the official announcement of his diagnosis in 1994. Their evidence is, well, a bit selective.
They begin by asserting that Reagan had won election twice despite constant references to his advanced age. In terms of evidence, this is almost the same as the current president*’s assertions that his victory in the Electoral College is proof of the popularity of his policies.
Actually, ever since Ronald Reagan’s first substantial run for president in 1976 at the age of 65, those opposed to Reagan labeled him as “old” and proclaimed his age a huge disadvantage compared to his opponents. Of course, they’d say the same thing four years later when he won the White House and four years beyond that when he won a second term — both by landslides, in both the popular vote and the Electoral College. The vote margins were massive, among the biggest in American history, and no one ever claimed that he was an illegitimate president.
All of which is completely irrelevant to the topic at hand. They then spend a couple of paragraphs ridiculing Bill O’Reilly’s Killing Reagan, in which Reagan’s slide is exacerbated by the attempt on his life in 1981. Beyond this, however, they cite the opinions of people like Ed Meese, and vague references to the opinions of “others who worked closely with the president.” They also assert that there are no medical records that mention Reagan’s having been symptomatic in the White House. In 2011, Ron Reagan, Jr. wrote a memoir in which he speculated that the process of the disease may have begun while his father was president. At the time, this was widely taken as a son’s assertion that his father had been symptomatic.
