White House Doctors Transcript to Remove Embarrassing Trump Response to Feinstein

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:30 pm

Ann Coulter called it “the lowest day of the Trump presidency.” Most people who care about immigration and have not been living under a rock heard this exchange between President Trump and Senator Dianne Feinstein yesterday:

From the official White House transcript:

SENATOR FEINSTEIN: I think there needs to be a willingness on both sides. And I think — and I don’t know how you would feel about this, but I’d like to ask the question: What about a clean DACA bill now, with a commitment that we go into a comprehensive immigration reform procedure? Like we did back — oh, I remember when Kennedy was here and it was really a major, major effort, and it was a great disappointment that it went nowhere.

THE PRESIDENT: I remember that. I have no problem. I think that’s basically what Dick is saying. We’re going to come up with DACA. We’re going to do DACA, and then we can start immediately on the phase two, which would be comprehensive.

SENATOR FEINSTEIN: Would you be agreeable to that?

THE PRESIDENT: Yeah, I would like — I would like to do that. Go ahead. I think a lot of people would like to see that, but I think we have to do DACA first.

The bold language was especially troubling, because Trump was agreeing to a clean DACA bill.

Funny thing about that: the bolded language didn’t make its way into the initial version of the White House transcript:

The White House sent out a correction Wednesday to a transcript of President Donald Trump’s meeting with members of Congress in which he explicitly agreed to a Democratic proposal to fix Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program (DACA) before tackling immigration reform.

. . . .

In the corrected version, which the White House sent out Wednesday morning—nearly 24 hours after the meeting took place—Sen. Dianne Feinstein asked Trump about the possibility of passing a legislative solution for DACA before turning to immigration reform, which would include issues like tougher border security.

Trump responded, “I would like — I would like to do that. Go ahead. I think a lot of people would like to see that, but I think we have to do DACA first. “

In the initial version, which the White House released on Tuesday, that comment from Trump was omitted. Instead, the quote read, “I think a lot of people would like to see that, but I think we have to do DACA first.”

The White House story: it’s all on the stenographer. I suppose that’s possible. It’s just odd, the way that the most damning part of the quote was initially whisked away.

Hey: at least they didn’t doctor the actual video. That’s the way Obama’s shop used to do it.

None of this ever happened, gentlemen!

The founders of the controversial opposition research firm Fusion GPS admitted that they helped the researcher hired to compile the infamous, largely discredited 35-page dossier on President Donald Trump to share the document with Sen. John McCain.

The goal of providing the dossier to McCain, the Fusion GPS founders explained, was to pass the information contained in the questionable document to the U.S. intelligence community under the Obama administration.

The disclosure raises questions about whether McCain knew that the information he delivered to the intelligence community was actually an opposition document reportedly funded by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens acknowledged he was “unfaithful” in his marriage but denied allegations that he blackmailed the woman with whom he had the affair.

The Republican governor and his wife released a statement Wed night. It came after St. Louis television station KMOV-TV reported that Greitens had a sexual relationship with his former hair stylist in 2015.

The governor made no mention of any plans to resign.

The station reported that the woman’s ex-husband said Greitens photographed her nude and threatened to publicize the images if she spoke about the affair.

In 2012, Donald Trump said Romney lost because he was too “mean-spirited” to illegal immigrants, and praised the Democrats for being “kind” to them:

“The Democrats didn’t have a policy for dealing with illegal immigrants, but what they did have going for them is they weren’t mean-spirited about it,” Trump says. “They didn’t know what the policy was, but what they were is they were kind.”

  29. I did watch the tape. That is why I am being so negative about Mr. President. He does not inspire confidence.

The Democrats are winning. They won two Senate seats in Virginia and Alabama. They’ll take DREAM/DACA back to their constituencies and galvanize them for the mid-terms while the Republican voters are saying: “Vote? What for?”. And they’ll be right.

But we got Gorsuch. And Trump’s rich jerkoff friends got their tax cut. Yay! Both of which will be nullified by the next round of Supreme Court appointments and new “tax reform” by a Democrat Congress and a Democrat President. Yay!

  53. Its a magnet to draw them here, the further point it seems another thing that cannot be undone by judge or executive order.

    narciso (d1f714)

  54. It hasn’t sunk in yet. It might not sink in as a result of this. But:

This televised meeting points out the most spectacular irony of the Trump Regime in my humble opinion: Trump won the GOP nomination almost entirely on the basis of support from voters (some of whom have never been GOP voters) who believe that the RINOs and GOPe and cucks on Capitol Hill are worthless, spineless, confused do-nothings who are entirely unreliable.

But Trump’s weather-vane vacillations and equivocations and contradictions on every matter of substance shown in that meeting — on immigration, Trump’s signature issue, on which he supposed is most involved, most continuously and deeply — prove beyond any doubt that he is entirely unreliable for any purposes of negotiating with the Democrats.

The GOP must get 60 Senate votes to pass anything, but with the midterms approaching and so very many more Dems up in purplish or even pink states (including some Trump carried), that is not an impossible task — and indeed looks quite doable compared to goals like entitlement reform or even a trillion-dollar infrastructure bill.

But Trump has to play the “bad cop” in that negotiation. All that requires is for him to shut up, but actually, he could and should be speaking out. And for there to be any chance of success in peeling off the necessary Dem senators, the POTUS must either be (a) exactly in sync with the GOP leadership on the Hill (which, in turn, needs to be in sync between House and Senate, no small task itself given the herd of cats in the Senate), or (b) taking a more extreme position than the GOP leadership on the Hill.

The latter would fit Trump’s style and personality far better. It would be far more effective for the GOP leadership on the Hill to be able to tell the vulnerable Dem senators: “No, we can’t do it your way on this point, because Trump has said that he can and will veto this bill if it doesn’t include _____.” When there finally is some compromise, some give and some get (because these Dems have to be given a way to save face among their partisans too), the GOP leadership can say, “Well, we don’t know, we’ll have to take it to the WH, but at least we’ll recommend this.”

I don’t know if I can sell you this fine luxury automobile with the included undercoating and heated seats at this price, I might get fired, but I’ll tell you what: I’m going to ask my manager, be right back.

Instead, you’ve got the guy who’s supposed to be the bad cop, the hardliner, the voice of all those millions of people who had no confidence in Congress but every confidence in the steadfast principle of Donald J. Trump, telling the Dems that he has great respect for all the people in this room and he’ll sign whatever they send him — clean DACA fix, maybe even comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship, because a lot of people want that.

Can you imagine the smirks on the Dems’ faces in their caucus when they contemplate the next-day walk-back? “Oh, the POTUS really meant that we have to have funding for the Wall, an end to the lottery, and an end to chain immigration.” Does anyone think that the Dems — having heard to the exact opposite two days ago from Trump’s own mouth in an extraordinary session that he’d arranged to have televised worldwide! — really believe that walk-back?

If you voted for Donald J. Trump and you’re hoping for conservative legislation on immigration, you are now reliant entirely on the negotiating skills and principles, whatever they may be, of Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, and their respective teams.

You’ve already been sold out — not by the “cucks,” but by the Donald.

  60. #44, Hoagie, yes, the Democratic Party died when LBJ orchestrated the murder of President John F Kennedy on November 22, 1963.

Immediately following the assassination, LBJ plunged the US into long bitter years of war in Vietnam which ripped us apart destroying our national unity and fracturing the nation into fiercely unyielding interest groups.

Many, if not most, of our nation’s subsequent upheavals can trace their origins directly to the assassination, the war and its aftermath, and to LBJ’s criminal misuse of federal agencies to cover-up his multitude of crimes, and to crush opposition to his policies.

The resulting pressure was too great, the American melting pot boiled over, and we haven’t found a way yet to put aside our weapons and our grievances and sit down around the national table in agreement since.

  72. #65, Liviticus, your flippant and inaccurate comment reveals a childish penchant for trolling.

During the Primary campaign Trump asked if the young Cuban man photographed helping Lee Oswald distribute Fair Play for Cuba flyers in front of Clay Shaw’s NOLA TradeMart might possibility be the father of Senator Ted Cruz.

It was not such a far fetched query as you assume. Cruz Sr was in NOLA then, he did resemble the young Cuban subject, and he was active in anti-Castro organizations. While none of that is remotely conclusive, it does provide some basis for asking the question.

To my knowledge, no reliable sources have identified the young Cuban, or placed Cruz Sr verifiably elsewhere at that particular time. Of course both know-it-alls and know-nothings are quick to ridicule Trump, wise crack, poke fun, and make fools of themselves, like you.

Not really, Dave but it did seem safer than electing another faux commie who was knee deep in corruption from Little Rock to Haiti and left a trail of bodies and denial in her wake. Just sayin’.

And the reason “we haven’t found a way yet to put aside our weapons and our grievances and sit down around the national table in agreement since” is because the democrat party abandoned their position as “opposition” absorbed or was absorbed by the CPUSA and the radical leftists from the 60’s and decided it is better to divide and diversify America than to unite her around that table. You’ll notice the left always wins. They never compromise. That’s why they hate Trump so much. He’s not one of them and they can’t figure out what he’s doing. Just look at the incessant whining not only here but all across “liberal” America. They have tried everything from a “Russian” conspiracy to Trump being insane and nothing sticks. It’s killing them.
