  11. Happy and safe New Years!!

Today was the only day every adult in the US was born in the 1900s, and every minor was born in the 2000s.

  12. Yeah, those minors who have never known the joy of meeting someone or saying their goodbyes right off of the gate gantry at the airport.

  13. Happy new years talk, mcgehee how have you been?

  14. A police sergeant must rally the cops and prisoners together to protect themselves on New Year’s Eve, just as corrupt policeman surround the station with the intent of killing all to keep their deception in the ranks.

Assault on Precinct 13: pretty good New Year’s Eve movie.

Reminds me of a New York Times story that ran today: Clinton backers David Brock & Susie Tompkins Buell steered a total of $700k to @LisaBloom’s firm to suborn false witness against our President.

New Year’s Eve at the Times or just another Sunday.

    Happy New Years.

  15. Happy MST New Years to my son, daughter, SIL and parents who will never likely read Patterico but I assume several of them are good people.

  18. Happy PST New Year to Messers. Colonel Haiku, papertiger, my manager, agent, ASCAP and BMI.

Ima ride this bit into the ocean.

I also thank the host in abstentia.

  19. Hey guys, I was looking at the moon just now and I was curious. It’s actually called the Wolf Moon. It looks full the day before, of and after. I’m guessing it’s technically full later tonight. I wondered how often it’s full on New Years. I don’t know, but it’s colder than Mueller’s Russian investigation.

    Pinandpuller (97fffd)

  20. It’s the biggest full moon of 2018. You guys still have a chance to see it. It’s real, and it’s spectacular!

    My 2018 prediction:

I’m the only one awake when TSHTF.

    Pinandpuller (97fffd)

  21. Listen and understand! That Wolf Moon is out there! It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity or remorse or fear. And it absolutely will not stop till Wednesday.

    Pinandpuller (97fffd)

  22. The wolf moon has disappeared from viewing on old cape cod.

  23. Happy New Year to you and yours, Pinandpuller.

  24. May your New Year be a happy one, pontificators.

    mg (8cbc69)

  25. Hey thanks Mr mg. Are you waiting up for TEOTWAWKI with me or did you go to sleep and get up again already?

You know I think I’m going to go with uncured bacon instead of hog jowls because I haven’t noticed any appreciable difference in my fortunes. And I didn’t buy hog jowls.

    Pinandpuller (cb7a3f)

  26. Got up to stoke the stove with oak, feed the dogs and let them out, make coffee, bacon & eggs with a side of french toast.
TEOTWAWKI would be great without Soros!

  27. if you go to korea please please there are the thing you need understand about this year

    specifically about the word eighteen

    Eighteen (18)

    Direct translation: Ship-pal / 십팔

This one is a little tricky as the actual translation is not the problem, but the pronunciation. The number eighteen is pronounced Ship-pal. While a Korean could probably pronounce it correctly, our poor Anglo vocal cords are wired a little differently. Unfortunately, if you say this number with even the slightest error in pronunciation, it sounds an awful lot like the F word in Korean (shi-bal / 씨발). It is actually so similar even amongst Koreans, that ’18’ is often used as slang on chat rooms and video games to replace the F word. Do yourself a favor and avoid the need to say 18 in Korean, it just isn’t worth the risk.

that said the number 8 is a lucky one they say! Buy many bitcoin we all be rich

i think i watched it cause of Mr. Tarantino cited it as an influence

  29. It was that period in trashy Hollywood movie making when westerns were allegories for urban violence, see e.g. Ulzana’s Raid (1972) with Burt Lancaster, and violent urban movies were westerns set in trashy Hollywood’s idea of American big cities. I think Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) was based on Fort Petticoat (1957) with Audie Murphy.

    nk (dbc370)

  30. Petticoat‘s on Amazon but you need a Starz subscription

  49. i don’t think my high school even exists anymore to be honest

    it never really caught on

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  50. We also had John Podesta (that John Podesta) and Rod Blagojevich, as well as Edgar Bergen, Johnny Weissmuller, Adrian Zmed and Frankie Laine (who named himself for the school) among others.

    nk (dbc370)

  51. i saw Adrian once at my favorite little neighborhood Japanese place in LA

it has this charming “Japanese soul food” motif and every plate comes with a teensy slice of watermelon and if I remember right a signature little pasta salad

gosh we had so many special meals there – at night there was usually a good wait but it was worthwhile for sure

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  52. My (private) high school just celebrated its centennial.

My (public) elementary school on the west side of Detroit isn’t doing nearly as well. Apparently it was shuttered in 2008 due to falling enrollment, and is now one of more than 100 abandoned schools in the city.

According to this site, the school has several security systems in place to prevent it from being stripped by “scrappers”. The photos on that page are really poignant – the auditorium stage looks just like it did in the early 70’s when I (sort of) learned to play trumpet in Mr. Zapolowski’s band class. Apart from falling into disuse and disrepair, the hallways and classrooms still look very recognizable. I have dreams about the place from time to time.

    Dave (9aedfd)

  53. Speaking of food, I am going to fry some ham and diced potatoes (which some places have taken to calling hash browns) for lunch (which some places have take to calling brunch). Should I do it right and fry the potatoes in a clean pan with olive oil, or go hillbilly and fry them in the leftover grease from the ham?

    nk (dbc370)

  54. leftover grease for sure

“Here’s hoping 2018 brings more ethical leadership, focused on the truth and lasting values,” Comey wrote in a tweet that many will interpret as a nod to President Trump, who fired Comey earlier this year.

  58. In principle, you’re supposed to be able to go out an buy marijuana for recreational purposes in California, as of today, although nearly every city and county has refused to grant licenses for recreational pot outlets, essentially exercising a veto on the legalization referendum. The nearest city to where I live that’s issuing licenses for recreational sales is Santa Ana, which is a good 40 minute drive on the freeway.

Of course, it is still a violation of federal law, which makes me uneasy about the whole business – state governments should not flout the law of the land, whether the law in question concerns immigration, controlled substances or anything else. They should ESPECIALLY not aim to profit from setting up what is essentially a protection racket in drug trafficking.

That’s one reason why – despite having smoked my share back in the day – I voted against legalization in November 2016. It wouldn’t really bother me if the feds took pot off the list of controlled substances, or made allowances for states to regulate the sale within their borders (although let’s face it – smoking anything IS a health hazard and pot DOES mess up people, especially kids, who use it to excess).

  59. I will not be participating in the Ransom demands of the State, however.

My backyard still will end run around 50 percent tax.

    “Medical marijuana” is a joke.

If they want to prescribe it as medicine, let it pass the same scientific tests for safety and effectiveness as every other prescription drug.

    Dave (9aedfd)

  66. Most doctors who know agree that it is very effective for nausea and anorexia. Except those in the pockets of Big Pharma who want to push the patent medicines.

Still, even prescription medical marijuana users are illegal under federal law. It affects gun ownership and immigration status among other things. I have not seen any green card cases, but there have been gun cases.

  67. If they want to prescribe it as medicine, let it pass the same scientific tests for safety and effectiveness as every other prescription drug.

  75. CHARLIE PIERCE

In this interview, the president* is only intermittently coherent. He talks in semi-sentences and is always groping for something that sounds familiar, even if it makes no sense whatsoever and even if it blatantly contradicts something he said two minutes earlier. To my ears, anyway, this is more than the president*’s well-known allergy to the truth. This is a classic coping mechanism employed when language skills are coming apart. (My father used to give a thumbs up when someone asked him a question. That was one of the strategies he used to make sense of a world that was becoming quite foreign to him.) My guess? That’s part of the reason why it’s always “the failing New York Times,” and his 2016 opponent is “Crooked Hillary.”

In addition, the president* exhibits the kind of stubbornness you see in patients when you try to relieve them of their car keys—or, as one social worker in rural North Carolina told me, their shotguns. For example, a discussion on healthcare goes completely off the rails when the president* suddenly recalls that there is a widely held opinion that he knows very little about the issues confronting the nation. So we get this.

It may well be effective for nausea and anorexia. I’m a bit skeptical that it’s any more effective than the dozens of other safe and non-hallucinatory alternatives, but if so, it should be easy to establish in clinical tests.

Various opiates are controlled substances (with good reason) yet have managed to pass the tests required for controlled prescription use. (Opiates also highlight the dangers associated with indiscriminate prescriptions; my cousin’s son finally died of an overdose in his mid-30’s last year; his mother died of the same thing when he was about 5; and his whole life was basically one long, slow-motion train wreck thanks to her drug abuse during pregnancy leaving him addled and unable to function like a normal human being from the day he was born).

My view is also colored by the fact that every one of the dozen or so “medical marijuana” users I’ve known were either life-long stoners or dealers straight-up gaming the system for fun and profit.

In fact, unemployment was somewhat under 10 million, but was declining in the run-up to election day by 100,000 a month, largely due to the immense rearmament program Roosevelt had initiated and to the country’s first peace-time conscription, which he called a “muster”.

But Dallek completely ignores, for purposes of calculating unemployment, the many millions of participants in his workfare programs, who were just as much employed as, and more usefully than, the millions of conscripts and defense workers in the major European countries and Japan, against which Roosevelt’s record in reducing unemployment is often unfavorably compared.

[snip] These programs kept between five million and nearly eight million people usefully employed at any time building valuable public sector projects at bargain wages for Roosevelt’s first two terms, until defense requirements and the public sector took over and completed the extermination of unemployment.

Those unable to work received Social Security, unemployment and disability benefits from 1935 on.

[snip] It is not really clear in this book that the basis of the New Deal was emergency workfare, reduced work weeks, promotion of both collective bargaining and cartelism to raise wages and prices and, with the partial demonetization of gold, to induce modest inflation.

There is no real focus on FDR’s guaranty of bank deposits or the trusteeship of insolvent banks merged and refloated with preferred share issues. The entire financial system has collapsed by March of 1933 and almost all the banks and commodity exchanges were closed.

There is little about refinancing millions of mortgages and rebuilding farm prices by having farmers vote democratically, by category of agriculture, on production levels, to assure sustainable price levels and an adequate national food supply, while maintaining unharvested capacity in what was called a soil bank.

His public workers schemes massively advanced rural electrification and flood and drought control.

It was all very innovative, and 1936 was the only election in history (except 1964 with Lyndon Johnson) when a Democratic president carried every farm state.

Kurt Eichenwald is an idiot but my signal to redouble my short term trading account was the moron Paul Krugman’s “prediction” in August 2016 about if Trump is elected the market will crash and stay that way for years. Knowing full well that Krugman is supposed to be some kind of half-as$ed economist I knew he has no knowledge of the stock market and since his predictions on just about everything seem to always prove incorrect I intensified my ST trades even more than I had been.

Under the banner of “America First,” President Trump is reducing U.S. commitments abroad. On his third day in office, he withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a twelve-nation trade deal designed by the United States as a counterweight to a rising China. To allies in Asia, the withdrawal damaged America’s credibility. “You won’t be able to see that overnight,” Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister of Singapore, told me, at an event in Washington. “It’s like when you draw a red line and then you don’t take it seriously. Was there pain? You didn’t see it, but I’m quite sure there’s an impact.”

  113. Krugman has been batting .000 since he called on Greenspan to create a housing bubble in 2002.

“The basic point is that the recession of 2001 wasn’t a typical postwar slump, brought on when an inflation-fighting Fed raises interest rates and easily ended by a snapback in housing and consumer spending when the Fed brings rates back down again. This was a prewar-style recession, a morning after brought on by irrational exuberance. To fight this recession the Fed needs more than a snapback; it needs soaring household spending to offset moribund business investment. And to do that, as Paul McCulley of Pimco put it, Alan Greenspan needs to create a housing bubble to replace the Nasdaq bubble .

  135. As a condition for restoring the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, in 1954 the U.S. required removal of the AIOC’s monopoly; five American petroleum companies, Royal Dutch Shell, and the Compagnie Française des Pétroles, were to draw Iran’s petroleum after the successful coup d’état—Operation Ajax. The Shah declared this to be a “victory” for Iranians, with the massive influx of money from this agreement resolving the economic collapse from the last three years, and allowing him to carry out his planned modernization projects.[12]

As part of that, the CIA organized anti-Communist guerrillas to fight the Tudeh Party if they seized power in the chaos of Operation Ajax.[78] Released National Security Archive documents showed that Undersecretary of State Walter Bedell Smith reported that the CIA had agreed with Qashqai tribal leaders, in south Iran, to establish a clandestine safe haven from which U.S.-funded guerrillas and spies could operate.[78][79]

Operation Ajax’s formal leader was senior CIA officer Kermit Roosevelt, Jr., while career agent Donald Wilber was the operational leader, planner, and executor of the deposition of Mosaddegh. The coup d’état depended on the impotent Shah’s dismissing the popular and powerful Prime Minister and replacing him with General Fazlollah Zahedi, with help from Colonel Abbas Farzanegan—a man agreed upon by the British and Americans after determining his anti-Soviet politics.[79]

The CIA sent Major General Norman Schwarzkopf Sr. to persuade the exiled Shah to return to rule Iran. Schwarzkopf trained the security forces that would become known as SAVAK to secure the shah’s hold on power.[80]

invasion of Iran, also known as Anglo-Soviet invasion of Persia, was the invasion of the Empire of Iran during the Second World War by Soviet, British and other Commonwealth armed forces. The invasion lasted from 25 August to 17 September 1941 and was codenamed Operation Countenance. Its purpose was to secure Iranian oil fields and ensure Allied supply lines (see Persian Corridor) for the USSR, fighting against Axis forces on the Eastern Front. Though Iran was neutral, the Allies considered Reza Shah to be friendly to the Axis powers, deposed him during the subsequent occupation and replaced him with his young son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.[2]

  144. Ben’s link has the answer.

Fearing that Iran might be carved up into permanent spheres of influence, Washington quickly secured pledges that both London and Moscow would withdraw their troops six months after the war ended. Meanwhile, America’s stock rose in the eyes of many Iranians as U.S. advisers helped the young Shah plan the economic infrastructure essential for postwar modernization and development.

British forces pulled out of Iran on schedule, but when the Soviets refused to honor the March 1946 deadline, President Harry S. Truman decided, as Secretary of State James Byrnes put it, “to give it to them with both barrels,” censuring the Kremlin at the United Nations and making thinly veiled nuclear threats. Stalin finally withdrew the Red Army two months later, but only after receiving assurances from Iranian Prime Minister Ahmed Qavam that the Soviet Union would have access to oil fields in northern Iran.

So Roosevelt was pissed about it, and Truman gave the commies hell if they didn’t leave muy pronto.

After the war, Stalin kept his word from Yalta and withdrew his support. Notwithstanding Stalin, Tito kept backing them in the civil war until … listen to this to see how stupid they were … Tito broke away from Stalin and they, the idiots, denounced Tito for it. They should follow the Disney model:

With only 5 years left on Mickey Mouse’s copyright term, Congress again changed the duration with the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998. This legislation lengthens copyrights for works created on or after January 1, 1978 to “life of the author plus 70 years,” and extends copyrights for corporate works to 95 years from the year of first publication, or 120 years from the year of creation, whichever expires first. That pushed Mickey’s copyright protection out to 2023.
