This one is a little tricky as the actual translation is not the problem, but the pronunciation. The number eighteen is pronounced Ship-pal. While a Korean could probably pronounce it correctly, our poor Anglo vocal cords are wired a little differently. Unfortunately, if you say this number with even the slightest error in pronunciation, it sounds an awful lot like the F word in Korean (shi-bal / 씨발). It is actually so similar even amongst Koreans, that ’18’ is often used as slang on chat rooms and video games to replace the F word. Do yourself a favor and avoid the need to say 18 in Korean, it just isn’t worth the risk.

My (private) high school just celebrated its centennial.

My (public) elementary school on the west side of Detroit isn’t doing nearly as well. Apparently it was shuttered in 2008 due to falling enrollment, and is now one of more than 100 abandoned schools in the city.

According to this site, the school has several security systems in place to prevent it from being stripped by “scrappers”. The photos on that page are really poignant – the auditorium stage looks just like it did in the early 70’s when I (sort of) learned to play trumpet in Mr. Zapolowski’s band class. Apart from falling into disuse and disrepair, the hallways and classrooms still look very recognizable. I have dreams about the place from time to time.

In principle, you’re supposed to be able to go out an buy marijuana for recreational purposes in California, as of today, although nearly every city and county has refused to grant licenses for recreational pot outlets, essentially exercising a veto on the legalization referendum. The nearest city to where I live that’s issuing licenses for recreational sales is Santa Ana, which is a good 40 minute drive on the freeway.

Of course, it is still a violation of federal law, which makes me uneasy about the whole business – state governments should not flout the law of the land, whether the law in question concerns immigration, controlled substances or anything else. They should ESPECIALLY not aim to profit from setting up what is essentially a protection racket in drug trafficking.

That’s one reason why – despite having smoked my share back in the day – I voted against legalization in November 2016. It wouldn’t really bother me if the feds took pot off the list of controlled substances, or made allowances for states to regulate the sale within their borders (although let’s face it – smoking anything IS a health hazard and pot DOES mess up people, especially kids, who use it to excess).

Still, even prescription medical marijuana users are illegal under federal law. It affects gun ownership and immigration status among other things. I have not seen any green card cases, but there have been gun cases.

It may well be effective for nausea and anorexia. I’m a bit skeptical that it’s any more effective than the dozens of other safe and non-hallucinatory alternatives, but if so, it should be easy to establish in clinical tests.

Various opiates are controlled substances (with good reason) yet have managed to pass the tests required for controlled prescription use. (Opiates also highlight the dangers associated with indiscriminate prescriptions; my cousin’s son finally died of an overdose in his mid-30’s last year; his mother died of the same thing when he was about 5; and his whole life was basically one long, slow-motion train wreck thanks to her drug abuse during pregnancy leaving him addled and unable to function like a normal human being from the day he was born).

My view is also colored by the fact that every one of the dozen or so “medical marijuana” users I’ve known were either life-long stoners or dealers straight-up gaming the system for fun and profit.

His public workers schemes massively advanced rural electrification and flood and drought control.

It was all very innovative, and 1936 was the only election in history (except 1964 with Lyndon Johnson) when a Democratic president carried every farm state.
