Al Frankenstien, Serial Groper

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:58 am

Details here. For extra partisan points, treat these allegations in a completely different manner from the way you treated those against Roy Moore. Hint: lame, easily refuted distinctions are the best way to paper over your tribalist double standard.

UPDATE: Link fixed. There is a new accuser.

Not all nasty behavior towards a woman is the same.
Not all harassment is the same.

I was willing to consider the idea that the picture showed a nasty joke intended to embarrass her and was equivalent to drawing a penis on your buddies face when they’re drunk. Not at all becoming of a US Senator, but maybe not sexual assault.

Now I’m out. There will be others. He needs to step down.

You’re supposed to take the word of the many accusers that have come forward. But you won’t. Because you’re a crappy person who will overlook this behavior when acknowledging it would harm your tribe.

    Patterico (115b1f)

  11. Well, there is one difference: Franken’s behavior is more current, and this new allegation suggests that it is a continuing one. All of Moore’s accusers refer to times long past where Moore has no way of offering any positive defense.

  12. Anyone who hires Gloria Allred is de facto guilty.

    Ingot9455 (681849)

  13. Yes, the link is finally fixed.

The Gloria Allred connected allegation, which is the most serious one of them all has a very serious problem.

Roy Moore was not the District Attorney of Etowah County!

And Gloria Allred seems to have taken some pains to prevent reporters from immediately determining that fact.

    Sammy Finkelman (f07364)

  14. There’s lots of reasons Franken should not be in the Senate. This is the least of them. It’s really a personal matter between him, the lady and her husband, and of trivial importance to the rest of us.

    nk (dbc370)

  15. An analogy:

Let’s say that all these accusations are true. Then Moore is like the drunk who sobered up and has stayed sober for the last 40 years, while Franken is still drinking but now that the SHTF he’s fixing to get ready to maybe looking into rehab. Which one would you bet on being sober tomorrow?

    Kevin M (752a26)

  16. Roy Moore’s an innocent man he just got a bunch of deceitful honey boo boos doing lies on him

Al Franken’s mostly guilty of being a douchebag but he did two things what are kinda rude

number one he allegedly did a man kiss on some model chick when they were doing USO shows (forceful tongue action)

number two he maybe grabbed a buttock at the state fair while taking pictures, which is kinda weird

i think number two is the most serious allegation cause of it happened when he was a senator plus it suggests he’s a very unserious person (juvenile and grabby)

there’s no way to know if it’s true but the chick what got her buttock touched on apparently told her facebook friends about it in the comments where she posted the pic, which i think was the same day it happened

this is very remarkable because failmerican womens typically wait years or even decades before mentioning these type of incidents

i believe in his innocence not least because the accusers are disreputable and skeevy, but also cause their stories just don’t pass the smell test (Mr. Finkelman and Mr. 57 both have a good handle on this aspect)

and my skepticism is compounded both by the unlikely timing of this smear campaign as well as the too coordinated stampede effect what sleazy Mitt Romney and cowardly war hero John McCain tried so hard to affect

  38. The multiplicity issue is always “not good news”, but the then-contemporaneousness of the “corroboratively consistent statements” is a real kicker w/ the Lindsay Menz story.

Trouble for Al, methinks. (Yeah, I did get the prize a couple times, for Mr. Obvious, thank you.)

I confess my baseline bias is to disbelieve such charges, with respect to Franken, but this report certainly makes it harder for me not to credit Tweeden’s account of the rehearsal kiss, and rather more strongly harder not to credit the allegations of this account. So, yeah, maybe indeed Franken’s got some “issues” he probably ought to deal with.

(That said, this post here raises some good (as well as some rather less tenable) points, regarding the Franken-Tweeden photo (which in itself, for me, was a non-issue – however sophomoric – pretty much, in any event) and the Tweeden account of the “gross rehearsal kiss”. (Credit to original poster (this thread?).)

That said (and certainly not to make any excuses for Franken’s behavior if in fact he done wrong), I confess that I must be like so totally unwoke as to find it peculiar why full grown women who get “pawed” by some quasi-random dude (Franken wasn’t the boss, etc. of either of these women; no real power over them), don’t just haul off and clobber or slap or at least dope-slap the offender, or at the very very least give him the stink eye good and strong. At the time. (And why Ms. Minn. State Fair’s husband didn’t – if he believed the missus – didn’t act somewhat more like . . . well, a man. Who knows? Maybe they were both rapid Democrats.) Or, maybe, Mr. Unwoke Q!, this type of nonsense goes on so goddamn much with attractive women, that grinning and bearing it become almost second nature.

  46. So where does this end?

It doesn’t excuse Franken’s frat boy behavior for being an ass but in a way, given the spectrum of antics by SNL alumni chronicled in ‘Live From New York; An Uncensored History of SNL’ by Tom Shales & J.A. Miller, nailing him on harassment seems almost an afterthought. Why not drug use, instead– or perhaps that’s not as attention getting these days. As mentioned on another thread, what should alert all of us watching this passing parade in this ugly climate, is how to discern who truly has a valid complaint and who is just being an opportunist as more of these incidents come to light.

Leading by example is certainly not something we’re going to see from you-know-who. So it’s going to take work by us, not depending on the spin from red or blue or orange talking heads. It’s tricky stuff, too. I recently finished rereading some material on the blacklisting period in Hollywood. And the similarities beginning to surface are striking; ‘are you now or have you ever been a sex predator’ is echoing across the land. And where does this end? I’ve had two female bosses touch me inappropriately in my career. Said nothing. Half a century ago my own mother was ‘sexually-harassed’ at a public event by a well known British film actor (that’s only mention three, Haiku.) She said nothing. We all likely have a story or experience or two– but you don’t forget these things. Next week it could be a cashier complaining happyfeet touched her while making change in 1995; or Haiku gets accused of eyeing a woman because he praised her golf swing in 2003; or a waitress complaining Patterico smiled at her while serving a Denny’s breakfast in 1998. Where does this end?

It’s going to be up to us individually to stand up and say, ‘have you no decency, sir!’ You can’t legislate morality, but basic, good manners is simply a matter of personal responsibility, good taste and treating others as you’d like to be treated.

Stockholders at Fox rightly deserved to be made aware of settlements or payoffs for sexual harassment claims by employees. And if we’re spiralling down into the ‘naming names’ phase of this, ’bout time the ‘stockholders’ of the United States– the taxpayers– were made aware which member of Congress had settlements made with tax dollars for similar transgressions w/employees. But as Ben Burn sourced on another thread, this sort of sordid harassment has been going on in government since the start of the Republic– and in societiesover the ages for much longer.

On the night of 29 January Kiwi and Moa were patrolling along Kamimbo Bay, on the north-western corner of Guadacanal, when Kiwi detected a submarine. It made a depth charge attack, but then lost contact. Kiwi continued to attack and on its third run, the damaged submarine surfaced and attempted to fight it out.

Damage to HMNZS Kiwi after ramming

…On paper it was two-to-one, but the Japanese sub I-1 was a formidable opponent. At 2135 tons surfaced, the Type J1 class were one and a half times bigger than Moa and Kiwi combined. Undamaged, the sub could outrun them by about five knots. The I-1’s 140-mm gun had greater range and hitting power than the New Zealand ships’ 102-mm guns, and it also had powerful torpedoes. No wonder that to the Kiwi’s crew in the dark, the Japanese shells sounded ‘like an express train going through’…..

She’s smiling because he did that only after she took that pose.

Maybe even after the picture was snapped. Or perhaps she didn’t want to break that pose (while she’s trying to figure out exactly what’s happening.

    http://www.cnn.com/2017/11/20/politics/al-franken-inappropriate-touch-2010/index.html

When Franken walked in, Menz and her husband, who also spoke with CNN, said they recognized him right away. Menz said she had a brief and cordial exchange with the senator.

Then, as her husband held up her phone and got ready to snap a photo of the two of them, Franken “pulled me in really close, like awkward close, and as my husband took the picture, he put his hand full-fledged on my rear,” Menz said…

On the TV show, a reporter says that she posted the picture on Facebook. And when her sister wrote to her that you two look really close, she wrote “Dude — Al Franken TOTALLY molested me! Creeper!”

And that the exchange is still visible on Facebook but only to her Facebook friends.

Her mother and her husband agree that he told her that day: “Our senator just groped my wife right in front of me.”

He says “I was upset. I wasn’t happy about it in the least. He was already gone and I wasn’t going to confront him. But yeah — I was in shock, really.”

  62. Q @40. If the Al Franken photo was photoshopped, it was probably photoshopped on the instructions of Al Franken in 2006. (Al Franken probably doesn’t have the technical capability to this himself)

She doesn’t remember that picture being taken, and she didn’t see it soon after. It was left for her to see after the flight was over.

Come to think of it, it makes more sense as a photoshop.

If Al Franken created the photo that way, there wouldn’t be a risk of him waking her up. It would make the “joke” better and give him a defense. If she complained he’d chortle to her about how dumb she is to think the photo was real, and to others about having fooled her.

I think actually LT does say she did complain after the rehearsal kiss, and he treated all bad, trying to annoy her, (but in a kind of deniable way) during all the rest of that trip.

In the Minnesota mall, what was the husband supposed to do? Chase after the Senator, and then what?

Roy Moore isn’t denying he dated teenage girls because he did.

What he’s focusing on especially may be what he knows to be untrue – he’s just floundering in trying to disprove it. When it comes to Bill Clinton, is just the opposite, Kirsten Gillibrand and some others are focusing on the least serious charge – that involving Monica Lewinsky (from the non-legal angle it’s the least serious charge – from the legal angle we’ve got perjury here, also I think he lied initially under oath about Gennifer Flowers.)

  79. The New York Times had a story with a lot of background about Roy Moore printed yesterday.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/18/us/roy-moore-alabama.html

It includes, near the end. the name of person ho says she knew about the Leigh Corfman allegation years ago:

[apparently referring to Ten Commandments controversy, circa 1993] Gadsden watched him become a hero of the religious right with mixed feelings.

“I don’t want to use the word disgust,” said Kathleen Sisson, 67, a retired educator who had known for years about Ms. Corfman’s account of Mr. Moore. “But it bothered me greatly to know what I knew.”

I think CBS (or was it another network?) also showed a man who said he had known about it before, and said there were others too who did, and he hoped they were willing to say so.

The New York Times also apparently asked Leigh Corfman about this:

One of the women, Leigh Corfman, said she was 14 years old when Mr. Moore engaged in a sexual encounter with her. “I stand by my story,” said Ms. Corfman, whose account first appeared in The Washington Post. Mr. Moore has denied any impropriety with Ms. Corfman or any other woman.

It certainly would have been more socially responsible as well. I guess one cannot expect, anymore, that folks call upon themselves to be responsible for their actions, inaction, or for their enabling behavior, for that matter.

  99. She said she gave a”high overview” of this to her children when they were in junior high school and they told her they would be castigated on social media if she did. When was this?

Who else did she tell? She glides over that. But it is impossible for the Washington Post to ask her unless somebody told them. She says something about railing against Moore, but is very unspecific as to the type of persons she told, and when.

Anyway, she says that when the Washington Post came to her she said she would go public if they could find other people, and they did.

Now that’s probably what she told the people from the Washington Post but this looks planned. How is it really possible for a few reporters to find a few people in a city of 30,000 to 50,000 people?

They were fed these people, including her. And the other stories are not like hers – they were older, they were not taken to his home and he did not try to seduce them immediately. They show an interest in younger women, but they are not the same. It’s not like her story.

Now kishnevi says it could be for political reasons and also be true. But maybe on;y some of them are true, or details have been changed.

next up – Bill Clinton. The dems are eager to rid the grifters from the party.

There are 4 new women with accusations against Bill Clinton. This is from the first years after he was no longer president. Reported by Ed Klein.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5090399/Bill-Clinton-accused-sexual-assault-four-women.html

The women alleged the former president assaulted them in the early 2000s, during the time Clinton was working with playboy billionaire investor Ron Burkle (pictured together in 2006)

There may not be that much attention paid to it, because he’s a member of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy.

And who knows who his sources are.

There’s a lawsuit and settlement negotiations are in progress. The deal would have been money in exchange for silence.

Ed Klein says that – this year – Hillary wanted to hire private detectives to investigate these women but her lawyers told her not to do that.

“(Reuters) – Twenty-First Century Fox Inc has reached a $90 million settlement of shareholder claims arising from the sexual harassment scandal at its Fox News Channel, which cost the jobs of longtime news chief Roger Ailes and anchor Bill O’Reilly.

The settlement, which requires a judge’s approval, resolves what are known as “derivative” claims against Fox officers and directors, including: Rupert Murdoch and his son Lachlan, who are Fox’s executive chairmen; James Murdoch, another son and its chief executive, and Ailes’ estate.

The defendants did not admit wrongdoing in agreeing to the settlement filed with the Delaware Chancery Court.

Monday’s settlement calls for insurers of Fox officers, Fox directors and Ailes’ estate to pay the $90 million to the New York-based company for the benefit of shareholders.”

  166. narciso @173. It looks good, considering anyway there’s a problem with him saying and being “The District Attorney of Etowah County. Roy Moore would be having to o alot of bluffing to come out with something like this.

It says his witnesses have contacted news media but they have not reported what they said. They dispute a lot of details of Beverly Young Nelson’s story.

    1. The minimum age for workers there was 16. She claims she started working there before her 16th birthday. Well, she could have lied about her age or even used somebody else;s name, but she doesn’t say that. Could be what she says is true, bit it requires explanation.

    2. The dumpsters was not where she said it was. They were on the side of the building, not the back. and there was no space to park between the dumpsters and the building. Workers would step out the side door and throw garbage right in.

    3. Olde Hickory House never closed as early as 10 p.m. The Goodyear tire place net door closed at 10 p.m. and their employees came over there to eat. So the restaurant should not have been closed at 10 p.m.

    84. Although they are not sure, there was probably no entrance at the back of the parking lot, where BYN says she initially thought Roy Moore might drive there (to explain why she was not alarmed until he stopped the car) because the back of the parking lot did not reach the street, but the back yards of people, and people parked on the sides and there wasn’t even enough room in the back to turn a car around.

    5. They never saw Roy Moore there. That’s two former waitresses and two former customers. And Beverly Young Nelson said he was there practically every night (for what must be understood to be at least a few months)

In particular Rhonda Ledbetter who says she worked there from 1977 to 1979, said she never noticed him and she would have noticed anyone wearing a suit, as he presumably was. I mean working in a courthouse all day and all. Also, she doesn’t remember Beverly Young Nelson as working there. (You know, I think the Social Security Administration has records of anyone who worked on the books, which BYN can obtain and release.)

    6. The wait staff would not have interacted with someone who stayed at the counter, where she says he sat, but he would have been served by the bartender or a short order cook.

    7. There wasn’t any place around the restaurant that was dark. (BYN claimed he parked in a dark, isolated spot) People and cars were always around. The restaurant had wrap-around porch, with lights, like a racker barrel place, and there were lights all around.

.8. Roy Moore was the deputy district attorney. Someone who worked at the courthouse and would have recognized him and went to that restaurant said he never saw him there. He never saw Beverly Nelson either, and he had a lot of chances to.

    9. Another waitress says she worked there during the summer of 1977 and never saw either Beverly nelson or Roy Moore there, and she would have known a regular customer. Well, you could say that was before either of them was there.

    Sammy Finkelman (57e37d)

  167. Congress had (and still has) special rules for (preventing) complaints:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/13/us/politics/sexual-harassment-congress-capitol-hill.html

Under federal law, complainants must undergo a confidential process, where co-workers who might be able to provide corroborating evidence are excluded. They often must wait about three months before submitting an official complaint, yet must file one no later than 180 days after the episode. Once filed, victims must submit to up to 30 days of mandatory counseling and complete another 30 days of mediation.

If mediation fails, the person then must wait 30 more days before seeking an administrative hearing or filing a lawsuit in Federal District Court.

This goes back to a law passed in 1995. Before that there wasn’t any system, just the possibility of filing a lawsuit in federal court, which could mean wait years for a resolution.

When complaints are settled, it usually comes with a non-disclosure agreement, and the money is paid by Congress, and the names of the members of Congress or the Congressional offices involved not released.

  168. I think maybe the reason that Beverly Young Nelson claimed the restaurant closed at 10, rather than at 11 pm or midnight, is that Alabama probably had law stating how late 16 year olds could work, so her shift couldn’t end past 10 pm (she actually says sometimes it ended at 7 pm and sometimes at 10 pm – did this law depend upon what day of the week it was? Maybe the latest hour a 16-year old could work depended on what day of the week it was, and she never says what day of the week this alleged attack happened.)

And she has the restaurant close at the same time as her shift ended to explain why she had limited options for getting home and why Roy Moore exited the restaurant at the same time.

Note the waitress who said the restaurant closed at 11 or 12 (she doesn’t remember) was a college student at the time.

  169. @175 …It looks good …

Um hum. A press release by Moore’s campaign. I wonder why it “looks good”? I wonder why no news outlet’s reported on this? Even though there’s been outreach by the informants/the campaign? Not FOX, not WaPo, not Nat. Review, not no-one? Even tho, interviews have been given? I wonder why the informants’ reports weren’t presented in signed statements or affidavits. I wonder why Sammy doesn’t wonder about such things as well. I wonder what the truth is. I wonder what the best way is to likely ascertain the truth. I wonder why the Ala. legislature’s not scheduled evidentiary hearings on the controversy/ies.

  170. 81. Kathleen Sisson says she is afriend of Leigh Corfman’s mother.

    http://www.cnn.com/2017/11/10/politics/roy-moore-alabama-reactions/index.html

Sisson said she is a close friend of Nancy Wells — the mother of Leigh Corfman, who accused Moore of initiating a sexual encounter with her when she was 14 years old. Sisson said Wells confided in her in the 1990s about Corfman’s alleged encounter.

When did she tell her mother?

    https://www.afa.net/the-stand/culture/2017/11/why-i-stand-with-judge-moore/

    ((quoting the Washington Post story)

Wells says her daughter told her about the encounter more than a decade later, as Moore was becoming more prominent as a local judge.”

Moore became a judge in 1992, and prominent soon after. So that’s not inconsistent. But it would be nice to check the stories (not about the acts that may have happened in 1977, but about who told who when what. And who told the Washington Post.

  171. 177. Q! (86710c) — 11/20/2017 @ 11:31 pm

I wonder why the Ala. legislature’s not scheduled evidentiary hearings on the controversy/ies.

That might seem like it’s going too far, but it really isn’t. And this is important to get at both the conduct of campaigns and the conduct of lawyers. This is important even if there is something damaging that is unquestionably true about Moore. But I don’t Alabama state legislature is in session. There’s Congress.

As for why they didn’t write about it, could be they doubted it, and almost just came out.

I think the most likely way Moore would know the story was false is if he never visited that restaurant. He’s concentrating on that accusation. It just rings together. It would help if it was supported by affidavits and if it panned out.

The restaurant either closed at 10 pm or it didn’t. The dumpsters either were at the sides, flush against the building, or they weren’t. The whole area of the parking lot was lighted, or it wasn’t. There was a back exit of the parking lot to the next street, or there wasn’t. It terminated at the backyards of houses or there wasn’t, and it terminated at the next street. There was room to drive a car around to the back or there wasn’t. Beverly Young Nelson either worked there or she didn’t. Roy Moore used to go there and stay there till closing during the period between about the middle of October at least and the end of December 1977 or he didn’t. She had a boyfriend who regularly took her home from there or she didn’t.

Roy Moore was either the District Attorney of Etowah County or he wasn’t. (he wasn’t) That was either her yearbook from June, 1977, or it wasn’t. If he lied about being the district attorney it is either that she found that out, or she didn’t, and how could she not have discovered that in all these years of talking about it with her sister that that was wrong and he was only the deputy district attorney? Either people called him the district attorney or they didn’t, and I haven;t read that anybody else did. Gloria Allred has that and also the lawyer for another woman. A person who claimed he was banned from the mall claimed he was lawyer.

Gloria Allred deliberately misspelled Etowah County in two different ways or – there is no or, since the same mistake appeared in a number of different newspapers.

Gloria Allred will either make Beverly Young Nelson available for questioning in another forum before the election if the senate Judiciary Committee (!) doesn’t hold hearings, or she won’t.

I leave it to you to figure this out.

Some assertions have been made that can’t withstand scrutiny if wrong.

They were clips of him introducing stories on the CBS This Morning. He decided to play it because of the last one. It was Charlie Rose saying something like that Roy Moore was the latest but he won’t be the last.
