David Horowitz: Sure, Roy Moore Is a Child Molester, But Vote for Him Anyway!
This one tweet encapsulates everything that is wrong with our politics today:
In my view Moore is guilty as accused. But 1) it happened 30 years ago, & 2) he can't be removed from the ballot, & 3) electing a Dem strengthens a party that defends these criminals: Obama, the Clintons, Holder, Lynch, Abedin, Cheryl Mills etc. &their crimes are far far worse
— David Horowitz (@horowitz39) November 10, 2017
This is the logical end point for a party that has rationalized away the glaring character defects of Donald Trump. Once you auction off your soul for the promise of political gain, it becomes easier and easier to justify literally anything done by one of your own.
Now we have someone, David Horowitz, who is literally saying: I believe our Senate candidate once sexually molested a 14-year-old girl and is lying about it. But vote for him anyway because Democrats!
Let’s review specifically what the allegations are, as detailed by the Washington Post. Moore’s accuser, Leigh Corfman, says she told Moore she was 14 years old. Here’s what she says happened next:
She says that Moore drove her back to the same house after dark, and that before long she was lying on a blanket on the floor. She remembers Moore disappearing into another room and coming out with nothing on but “tight white” underwear.
She remembers that Moore kissed her, that he took Inflatable football helmet tunnel off her pants and shirt, and that he touched her through her bra and underpants. She says that he guided her hand to his underwear and that she yanked her hand back.
“I wasn’t ready for that — I had never put my hand on a man’s penis, much less an erect one,” Corfman says.
Horowitz acknowledges that this is true. But, he says, vote for Moore anyway.
This kind of partisanship discredits Horowitz and anyone else who signs on to it. And it solidifies my conclusion that Republicans will never again be able to credibly attack a Democrat on grounds of character in my lifetime.
Part of the irony is that the gains actually obtained by the Trump folks are so unimpressive. No ObamaCare repeal. A “tax cut” bill that hikes taxes on the middle class so that the wealthiest (like Trump) can get a tax break. If you’re going to sacrifice any claim to righteousness, wouldn’t you think you’d demand actual results in return?
Pathetic and disgusting. I have never been so thrilled to be out of the Republican party.

Ben burn (b3d5ab) — 11/10/2017 @ 4:38 pmHow can Horowitz acknowledge something to be true when he has no knowledge whether it is in fact true or not? Moore has denied that he ever met Corfman. Moore did acknowlede the encounters with the two older teens (16 and 17), but denies this one.
The answer to my own question: Horowitz did not, in fact, acknowledge the truth of the accusation, because he can’t know. He said he believed it, which is not the same thing.

Yes, makes no sense.
If Alabama voters think he did it, they should not vote for him.
Horowitz is right about one thing though, “Obama, the Clintons, Holder, Lynch, Abedin, Cheryl Mills” have all committed crimes but they get away with it because the media covers for them.
We’ll just have to keep fighting the good fight against a very stacked deck. The only thing that keeps many of us going is being on the right side.

But what’s utterly ironic is, because they’ve already sold the party’s soul for gain and sacrificed any moral fortitude has been on the alter of “win at any cost,” once in office, the Republicans won’t be wed to anything resembling representative of conservative principles and ideals. That ship already sailed. Keep up this rationalization, and there will be no daylight whatsoever between Democrats and Republicans.

In an era where FAR less palatable things are done sexually, I have a hard time going after some 30yo dating 18yo women. Sure, it used to be frowned upon, but these days? Who can say?
But molestation of a 14yo is still beyond the pale.

The two main cultivar groups are the cardoon (Cynara cardunculus Cardoon Group, syn. C. cardunculus var. altilis DC), selected for edible leaf stems, and the artichoke (Cynara cardunculus Scolymus Group, sometimes distinguished as Cynara scolymus or C. cardunculus var. scolymus (L.) Fiori), selected for larger edible flower buds. They differ from the wild plant in being larger (up to 2 m tall), much less spiny, and with thicker leaf stems and larger flowers, all characteristics selected by humans for greater crop yield and easier harvest and processing. Wild and cultivated cardoons and artichokes are very similar genetically, and are fully interfertile, but only have very limited ability to form hybrids with other species in the genus Cynara.
The earliest description of the cardoon may come from the fourth-century BC Greek writer Theophrastus, under the name κάκτος (Latin: cactus), although the exact identity of this plant is uncertain. The cardoon was popular in Greek, Roman, and Persian cuisine, and remained popular in medieval and early modern Europe. It also became common in the vegetable gardens of colonial America, but fell from fashion in the late 19th century and is now very uncommon.
I tried to grow cardoons this year but didn’t have any luck. I did have about eight globe artichokes make it thru the summer so I have hope for spring.

narciso (d1f714) — 11/11/2017 @ 6:52 amI hate having to take a position on this. Alabama is not my state, the federal government is not my circus ( I work on the county level ), and Moore is not one of my monkeys.
That said, the apparent standard of moral qualifications to serve in the Senate, and the standard of proof required to determine whether or not an individual meets those standards, is now being set by Bob Menendez. Senator Menendez is not be accused of personal and sexual misbehavior, he is accused of abusing his position of power via bribery, and interfering, (beyond the constitutional powers of a senator) in international decisions regarding visas, shipping and port deals, and technology transfers. Moore is accused of liking to date (possibly kiss and explore second base) with very young girls. Were the state legislature to choose Senators, neither of these men would likely pass muster. When the sort of electorate that approves Jesse Ventura, Arnold Schwartznegger, Al Franken, and Donald Trump gets to decide, the standards used are — to say the very least — different.
Aside from the standard of conduct established by the Moore and Menendez accusations, the standard of PROOF has been established with the precedent of the on-going Menendez trial. Formal charges, testimony, confrontation of the accusers, and decision by a jury. (Which includes jury members who seem to be unfamiliar with the English word “Senator” and until very recently compared the influence of a Senator to the pile of wealth enjoyed by very rich people — to be properly and legally shared among friends, at will. ) Juries get it wrong sometimes, but at present they remain the standard determining factor on whether or not an individual should or should not serve in the Senate — beyond the popularity contest of voted pluralities every six years. When Moore is convicted by a credulous jury, or when Moore is defeated in an election among credulous voters, fine. But if he has any belief in his own mind or self-serving assessment that the accusations are less-than-well founded, he should not resign (at least, not before Menendez.)
I hate this standard. But we can’t have one standard for incumbents and another for challengers, let alone one for one party or faction and a different one for others.

narciso (d1f714) — 11/11/2017 @ 7:32 amnarciso (109) ? Perhaps you refer to “The Th_O_lian Web” ?
I agree that is “off”, not to mention “odd”.
There is nothing historically unprecedented about celebrities serving in high Federal office. My favorite was Davy Crocket. Elected as a Jacksonian Democrat, and re-elected as a proto-Republican and ANTI-Jacksonian. (Crockett, famed as an Indian-fighter against renegade Creek tribes during the War of 1812, nevertheless knew the culture and believed — as more modern thinkers also believe — that President Jackson went much too far in dealing with — committing atrocities against — Native Americans. Crockett made his own fame in the pop media of his day, sort of the penny-dreadful stuff. Fiction, if you like. A tissue of lies, if you don’t. But in any case he had sufficient name-recognition to win a seat in the federal legislature. And he had such a deficit of principles and convictions that he jumped parties and turned on his President when it suited him. (Not that Crockett would not literally leap to the defense of his President against literal assassins — this was a time when “character assassination” was the province of rank beginners and amateurs. If you couldn’t get close with a pistol, why bother?) Anyhow Crockett was not perhaps the model of a moral and effective Congress critter, but still remains among my favorites regardless.
But Crocket never had to serve in the Senate.
Were I Moore, I would embrace the idea of being not just a conservative, but a REACTIONARY. I would challenge the progressive left to admit that some “modern” ideas just haven’t worked out. Some laws, even some Supreme Court precedents, even some Constitutional Amendments, have FAILED! The arc of history does NOT bend only one way. Sometimes it’s a sine wave. Obviously. Does anyone, ANYONE, think the 18th Amendment — Prohibition — should NOT have been repealed?
Doesn’t the precedent, then, of the 21st Amendment show that the 17th Amendment — direct election of Senators — is at least possible subject to repeal?
Now, I would (as candidate and former judge) Moore argue, the entrenched self-interested incumbent Senators who won their seats via popular election are not likely to sponsor a repeal amendment. Not support an Article V convention of states. BUT, as a popular candidate under a cloud, I would (Moore could) agree that he will continue to campaign, and leave his name on the ballot, and IF HE SHOULD WIN, then subject himself to the will of the Alabama legislature. If the legislature by bi-cameral resolution approves him, he takes his seat in the Senate. Should they not, he will resign, and allow the Governor to fill the vacancy. Should the Tennesee legislature feel the need to hold hearings on the sexual misconduct allegations before making their decision, I would (Moore could) pledge to co-operate.
Moore could lead by example, and become an advocate for restoration of the Constitutional checks and balances originally intended.
I dream.

I posted a bit on statutes of limitations because the LAW takes a similar view: that behavior so long in the past that memories are murky and people have changed is neither ripe for prosecution, nor would it serve justice.
But this is of course political: Roy Moore has lots of people who despise him, and some of them are willing to use ANYTHING against him. Show me evidence that this pattern of behavior continued and I’ll jump on board, but if you can’t, try some Christian charity and leave politics out of it.

Since Moore-loving Republicans seem to dominate the political establishment in Alabama (& assuming the legislature is in session (or absent that, calling an emergency special session)), hold hearings and subpoena witness which — according to happyfeet (and several others in this thread) — will inevitably reveal the lies of these women, the passing of cash from secret democratic and/or harvardtrashmedia pockets, the perfidy of the press and other like dangers to and betrayals of The Republic! . . . . Or maybe something else will be revealed . . . And is a criminal investigation out of the question ??? C’mon, Alabama! For the National Commonweal! And pronto, please!

Q! (86710c) — 11/11/2017 @ 12:17 pmKevin M 172,
I agree with your analysis but not your conclusion, and perhaps this analogy will illustrate why:
Assume that instead of electing a Senator, we are hiring a babysitter. There are no recent stories about the babysitter’s willingness to indulge in unseemly behavior with young people, but there are old stories that may or may not be reliable.
Do we take the chance? Most parents wouldn’t but some might. When it comes to politicians, more people probably don’t care. I guess it depends on whether they see an elected politician as someone entrusted with an important responsibility, or as a gamble that may or may not work out … and if it doesn’t then who cares? Some of us are less willing to take chances than others.
Further, worrying about the statute of limitations strikes me as unnecessary and not helpful. That is for criminal cases that can result in jail time. There is no statute of limitations on a reputation. We all have to answer, and we should have to answer, for what we have done as adults no matter how old we are.
DRJ (15874d) — 11/11/2017 @ 12:19 pmif a hoochie in the DA’s office knew her co-worker was behaving improperly with teen girls why is she only coming forward now?

does Theresa Moore enjoy vicarious child molestation?
it sounds like she had no interest at all in preventing this does it

happyfeet (28a91b) — 11/11/2017 @ 12:24 pmI agree. Especially for those seeking public office. By a certain age, most people have done things they are ashamed of, and would prefer remain private. But when an individual puts themselves in the public eye as a candidate hoping to be entrusted to represent the people, then it’s a given whatever there is in one’s background should and will become public. The public deserves as much information as possible of a candidate to make a more accurate assessment of whether they want to support such an individual.

You do realize that statements like these are defamatory, don’t you? Far be it from me to render advice to you, but frankly I would welcome the day when someone gets a bee in their bonnet and decides to go to the tremendously burdensome effort of slapping down an ignorant, profane, vile, and quite-understandably-anonymous troll such as yourself. Not that it’s much to-do, to crush one bug. But if it tended to generally cow such bugs as yourself not to flit about quite so much or so offensively, now that would be public service, above and beyond the call.

Reckon they all knew each other for quite some time? all these lawyers in li’l old Gadsen? ‘specially those in the two gummint offices? all things considered?
Q! (86710c) — 11/11/2017 @ 10:57 pmAssume that instead of electing a Senator, we are hiring a babysitter.
DRJ–
But we aren’t. And, truth be told, the number of sitting Senators I would want watching my kids is far less than 100. We’re electing someone to represent our VIEWS. Congress has been here before — there’s a Congressman who was convicted of tipping off a drug dealer while a district court judge, and impeached over it to boot. That to me is a far serious matter as it abused the public trust. But the House doesn’t feel that way.
The statute of limitations IS germane, as the reasons for it include the impossibility of defending yourself from the charges. All you can do is impugn the credibility of the accuser, and in this day and age that’s worse than pleading guilty. No alibi is possible, no witness can be called in defense. No contemporary recollection is available to prove a negative.
It’s just raw accusation.
Kevin M (752a26) — 11/12/2017 @ 12:32 amThere’s this, too; The Left gets to defend the indefensible. They’re still outraged that Roman Polansky is in permanent hock because he anally raped an underage girl. Not exposed himself. Not ‘inappropriately touched’. Not had consensual sex with, thereby committing statutory rape. Raped her ass which she was telling him to stop. Oh, no, Polansky’s films are too wonderful to actually treat him like the scumbag he is.
Yeah, right. I’ve watched a number. They are technically ok, but tend to be mean-spirited. To my mind, they don’t justify letting the guy off of a parking ticket.
The Left has found ways to excuse politicians all kinds of things. Boinking the help (Clinton). Active and enthusiastic membership in the KKK for years. Being dumb as a post (I’m look at YOU Maxine).
I could wish that keeping the Republicans firmly in control would have much effect, but keeping the Democrats OUT is worth some sleeze. Because what they want to do to the country is horrible, destructive, and usually ends with mass murder being used as a tool of statecraft. Anybody who doubts that where the Democrat Left is heading is Fascism needs to take a closer look at the Antifa twits.
A Socialist is a Communist is a Fascist is a Nazi. There are no moral or ethical differences.
I don’t like this asshole. The Republican Leadership should win the election, and then tell him to resign and win the special election with someone who isn’t a douche.

But the accusations that Senator Bob Menendez’s had sexual intercourse with underage girls while in the Dominican Republic are not to be presumed true.
In fact they may be untrue, or partially untrue (I remember a affidavit that was not sworn to properly.) And in fact the stories may have been spread by the enemies of Menendez’s doctor friend to get an investigation going.

Sammy Finkelman (8e756e) — 11/12/2017 @ 9:12 amIt could be argued that if the only underaged girls a Senator has sex with are prostitutes, you don’t have to have any great concerns about him meeting girls who are not professional prostitutes, so Moore, if elected, should be expelled from the Senate but Menendez should not be. (unless he is convicted of crimes.)
That is because you could argue that what Moore is accused of is worse. I don’t know if anyone would want to argue that, but you could.
Sammy Finkelman (8e756e) — 11/12/2017 @ 9:30 amThe problem with this kind of post is that it turns politics into a morality play. Politics concerns who will wield the levers of government power. It tends to attract unsavory characters who are arrogant and power-hungry. It often happens that both choices are morally corrupt or compromised. Even those accounted as great politicians often have had deep flaws – some presidents, including those that are considered great ones, we now know, were womanizers or had affairs, which were kept quiet at the time.
So the question is, if I have a choice between a scum-bag whose policies I nevertheless think are better for the country (or state or whatever), or a basically honest person whose policies, while well meant, will lead us down the proverbial toilet, I am not sure that the “right” answer is to choose the latter. The guy I vote for Senator (or President, for that matter) is not someone I am choosing as a match for my daughter or sister, let alone a moral authority.
As far as Moore, I have no idea if he did what he did. The allegations sound credible, but then again, many allegations that sound credible turn out to be false. And, if they are false, what is he supposed to do to refute them? There are no criminal or civil charges he has to face, so all we have are allegations and denials.
As I pointed out in a prior post, sometimes it’s like choosing between diarrhea and constipation. Both are very unpleasant.
Bored Lawyer (fe5e63) — 11/12/2017 @ 2:40 pmit’s pretty obvious they tailored what the honey boo boos were gonna say to be as credible as possible – all they need is a whiff of sleaze here – they’re not trying to build a criminal case
this is partly why they had to go back 40 years to where there’s no conceivable way Roy Moore could defend himself
