Allegations of Sexual Misconduct Made Against Roy Moore

Filed under: General — Dana @ 1:07 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Uh-oh. The Washington Post is reporting that Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore has been accused of sexual misconduct:

Leigh Corfman says she was 14 years old when an older man approached her outside a courtroom in Etowah County, Ala. She was sitting on a wooden bench with her mother, they both recall, when the man introduced himself as Roy Moore.

Alone with Corfman, Moore chatted with her and asked for her phone number, she says. Days later, she says, he picked her up around the corner from her house in Gadsden, drove her about 30 minutes to his home in the woods, told her how pretty she was and kissed her. On a second visit, she says, he took off her shirt and pants and removed his clothes. He touched her over her bra and underpants, she says, and guided her hand to touch him over his underwear.

Aside from Corfman, three other women interviewed by The Washington Post in recent weeks say Moore pursued them when they were between the ages of 16 and 18 and he was in his early 30s, episodes they say they found flattering at the time, but troubling as they got older. None of the women say that Moore forced them into any sort of relationship or sexual contact.

Wendy Miller says she was 14 and working as a Santa’s helper at the Gadsden Mall when Moore first approached her, and 16 when he asked her on dates, which her mother forbade. Debbie Wesson Gibson says she was 17 when Moore spoke to her high school civics class and asked her out on the first of several dates Inflatable football helmet tunnel that did not progress beyond kissing. Gloria Thacker Deason says she was an 18-year-old cheerleader when Moore began taking her on dates that included bottles of Mateus Rosé wine. The legal drinking age in Alabama was 19.

Of the four women, the youngest at the time was Corfman, who is the only one who says she had sexual contact with Moore that went beyond kissing. She says they did not have intercourse.

Moore has denied the allegations :

“These allegations are completely false and are a desperate political attack by the National Democrat Party and the Washington Post on this campaign,” Moore said in a statement obtained by Breitbart News.

Separately, Moore’s campaign said in a statement, “This garbage is the very definition of fake news and intentional defamation.”

Further:

“After over 40 years of public service, if any of these allegations were true, they surely would have been made public long before now,” the statement continued.

Across the board, GOP leadership is calling on Moore to step aside if the allegations are true. A sampling:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: “If these allegations are true, he must step aside.”

Sen. John McCain: “The allegations against Roy Moore are deeply disturbing and disqualifying. He should immediately step aside and allow the people of Alabama to elect a candidate they are proud of.”

Sen. Jeff Flake: “If there is any shred of truth to the allegations against Roy Moore, he should step aside immediately.”

Sen. John Cornyn, who endorsed Moore and is listed on his website, said the allegations are “deeply disturbing.”

Sen. Pat Toomey: “If there’s a shred of truth to it, then he need to step aside.”

Sen. Mike Lee: “If these allegations are true, Roy Moore needs to step down.”

Sen. Tim Scott: “If they’re accurate, he should step aside.”

Sen. Cory Gardner, chairman of national republican senatorial committee: “If these allegations are found to be true, Roy Moore must drop out of the Alabama special Senate election.”

According to an Alabama election spokesperson, it’s too close to next month’s special election to remove Moore from the ballot.

  8. > What is feasibility and legality of Atty Gen. Sessions resigning from his current post and returning to the Senate ahead of the special election

I’m not familiar with Alabama law, but I would expect the answer is *none*.

The way I would expect it to work based on my familiarity with election law in other states:

He would be appointed to replace an appointee, but there still has to be a special election to fill out the term created by his resignation. And it’s too late to cancel *this* election, or to change who is on the ballot on it. So Sessions would serve until the election results are certified.

  9. theres enough time before the election to assess as to whether this is probably true or not. There should be various forms of corroborating evidence of truth or falsehood.

A question is: Was anybody holding this in reserve?

One course is for Moore to promise to resign after he is elected. That is the only way to replace him at this point The senate could also refuse to seat him or expel him but it doesn;’t have enough grounds yet.

  10. It might be that 3 of the accusations are true, but are peoplke he tried to date in the 1980s, and involve no sexiual contact whatsoever, but the worst one is false but made up to sound vaguely similiar in some ways to the true ones.

  12. Accusations easy to make and impossible to disprove. What? Does the DNC keep lists of women who will accuse Republicans of sexual misconduct from twenty and forty years ago? Like Moore said, why didn’t all this stuff surface earlier? It’s not like he was keeping a low profile. He was thrown off the Alabama Supreme Court twice.

  14. Re the accusers:

Corfman described her story consistently in six interviews with The Post. The Post confirmed that her mother attended a hearing at the courthouse in February 1979 through divorce records. Moore’s office was down the hall from the courtroom.

Neither Corfman nor any of the other women sought out The Post. While reporting a story in Alabama about supporters of Moore’s Senate campaign, a Post reporter heard that Moore allegedly had sought relationships with teenage girls. Over the ensuing three weeks, two Post reporters contacted and interviewed the four women. All were initially reluctant to speak publicly but chose to do so after multiple interviews, saying they thought it was important for people to know about their interactions with Moore. The women say they don’t know one another.

It is interesting that none of these women came forward earlier with their stories. But perhaps, as a result of the unfolding Weinstein scandal and women going public with their accusations, these women felt more confident going public too.

I suspect that we’re seeing a knockon effect of that *everywhere* — Hollywood finally took the Weinstein scandal seriously, and that means maybe these people who were expected not to take things seriously might do so now, too.

McCain was not only a lousy student, he had his father’s taste for drink and a darkly misogynistic streak. The summer after his sophomore year, cruising with a friend near Arlington, McCain tried to pick up a pair of young women. When they laughed at him, he cursed them so vilely that he was hauled into court on a profanity charge.

    Hmm.

Let me rephrase, if I might.

I’m not a Christian, but I generally prefer to assume that people are being earnest and honorable (and there’s a lot in the Christian worldview which I see as honorable and good). So I’ve always assumed that Moore’s public Christianity was driven by earnest belief. This behavior is not something I would expect from someone who derives Moore’s public religious-political positions from earnest reflection and desire to live a Christian life and promote a Christian world.

So, if true, this shows Moore to *either* be (a) a reformed evildoer who is unwilling for some reason to admit to such, or (b) a lying demagogue pretending to be something he isn’t and hornswoggling people.

Both of these surprise me a bit, and both dissapoint me.

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  24. Ted Cruz has not made a public comment regarding Moore and these allegations, as far as a search shows. But, this is interesting: it is being reported that less than 2 hours after the news came out, Moore sent out a new fundraising appeal – citing Cruz, Rand Paul and Cornyn’s support:

Less than two hours after the Washington Post published a major investigation reporting that Moore had pursued teenagers and sexually molested one under-age girl, his campaign zapped out a fundraising email that showcased endorsements from three senators whom conservatives tend to adore: Ted Cruz of Texas, Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Mike Lee of Utah.

“As you know, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee all endorsed my campaign for U.S. Senate,” Moore wrote. “If I’m elected to Washington, I’ll join them on the frontlines of the fight to Drain the Swamp.” The email featured a graphic of al three hovering behind a grinning Moore.

Cornyn publicly said of Moore and the allegations:

If it is true, I don’t think his candidacy is sustainable. But we believe in a presumption of innocence until proven guilty. And so I think it’s important for the facts to come out.

I’d like to have heard him say that, if it is true, his candidacy is not sustainable, rather than “I don’t think his candidacy if sustainable”. And it is reasonable to wait for the facts to come out.

But given that Cruz and Cornyn and Paul were named in this latest fundraising appeal *after* the allegations were made public, it might appear to put them in a tricky spot given their support of him, but I can easily see them revoking their support of the candidate in light of this news (if it turns out to be true). It would be political suicide not to if the allegations prove true, and I think their own personal convictions and faith would compel them to denounce him.

Yes ma’am. That comes across as very cynical of the democrats. Gather a few victims and wait until there’s no way for the GOP to replace the candidate. Weaponize sexual abuse of children, true or false.

It’s rarely a mistake to wait a few days before judging. If Moore is actually guilty, he still will be in another few days, on something that is decades old of true. If not, then it is grossly unfair to rush in now.

Actually, I think a lot of earnest, humble Christians find the kind of person who exploits Christianity for power and fame to be repellent and suspicious. I personally think of all those times Jesus confronted judgmental and outspoken religious leaders. The problem wasn’t that they were Jewish and not Christian. There’s nothing at all about criticizing a Christian that suggests someone isn’t one or has slandered ‘them’ as a whole. If anything, I think Dana’s point of view is Christian.

E-mail from New Yrk Senator Kirsten Gillebrand (up for re-election in 2018) entitled Dangerously unfit:

…if you’ve followed the Senate special election in Alabama at all, you know Roy Moore is unfit for office – and recent allegations that he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl are utterly disgusting.

Together, we can keep him out of the Senate: A recent Fox News poll shows Democrat Doug Jones TIED with Moore, even before these most recent allegations. Doug is a great prosecutor and a strong candidate. He has what it takes to win – but the election is less than five weeks away, and every single one of us needs to step up to support Doug right now.

Please rush $5 right now to help Doug Jones beat Roy Moore, and elect a candidate who will fight for women everywhere.

If you’ve saved payment info with ActBlue Express, your donation will automatically be evenly split between Kirsten Gillibrand and Doug Jones:

Adjective Dana, that’s a reasonable plan and it makes sense. However I don’t think that’s how politics will play out. Unfortunately this is a cynical play that could work.

NJRob, you’re the one slandering a Christian. Anyone who has read the New Testament recognizes the kind of people Dana is talking about. Try to make your arguments without the need for character assassination.

If you think that’s similar to a mid thirties man having a 14 year old girl undress and fondle his penis over his underwear, you have issues.

On a second visit, she says, he took off her shirt and pants and removed his clothes. He touched her over her bra and underpants, she says, and guided her [when she was fourteen year old] hand to touch him over his underwear.

Kevin, you do understand that Corfman claims to have been 14 when this happened, right? And when the Wapo said “aside from Corfman” and then describes 16-18 year olds, they are no longer talking about Corfman, right?

Where do you get “sexual abuse” out of this, Dustin?

    Kevin M (752a26) — 11/9/2017 @ 5:22 pm

Because adults putting kids in their car and having them fondle their genitals is sexual and it is abuse.

Innocent until proven guilty, but the accuser here is giving us her name, and has corroborating victims. Corfman is a republican voter so it’s hard to see why she would turn her life upside down in a conspiracy with other women to help the democrats.

All that means is that there’s a network handling these women and marketing their stories. “[A] Post reporter heard”… LOL … he heard!

Moore returned to Gadsden again in 1985. He ran in 1986 for Etowah County’s district attorney position against fellow Democrat Jimmy Hedgspeth. He lost that election as well, and Moore returned to private practice in the city. During this period, he married his wife Kayla, switched his affiliation to the GOP, and added to his office a wooden Ten Commandments plaque.

Did you read the wapo article?

Blame absentee balloting. Physical ballots have either already been mailed or are about to be.

With only in-precinct voting, you could probably print everything, reprogram your voting software, and get things in place logistically with about ten days lead time. But since you have to mail people ballots with enough time for them to mail them back — and that includes soldiers stationed overseas, so you have to pad enough time for physical mail to go across the country – the lead time is actually *longer* than it was before voting by mail became common.

But if he were (hypothetically, to illustrate the legal issues involved) to die, what then? The options seem to be:

    * leave him on the ballot, count votes for him as valid, then declare the seat vacant if he wins (this is my preferred approach)

    * leave him on the ballot, count votes for him as invalid, and let it be a de facto Jones victory. (I think this is insane, but I’ve seen people argue for the equivalent when Democrats have died late in the election cycle).

    * allow substitution on the ballot and reprint, with absentee votes for Moore either being counted as a replacement or invalidated (both of which I think are bad), or absentee ballots with Moore on them being invalid altogether (which is bad but, I think, less bad)

    * delay the election

Delaying the election is problematic for regular elections as the date of regular federal elections is fixed by Congress, but for primaries and for special elections, a state could do it. That said, I’m not aware that it’s the general practice.

    Pinandpuller (16b0b5)

  156. Dustin – I think there’s an argument that the WaPo timed this story to interfere with the election.

That said, given that (a) the paper found the women rather than the women finding the paper, and (b) there’s substantial corroborating evidence, I think there’s certainly enough basis to believe it to be true. Not to *know* it to be true, but to *believe* it to be true.

I also think — look, the liberal partisan approach to this would be to hope Moore wins, because if he does, he’s going to be a drag on every Republican in a swing district next year, and since Alabama was a safe red seat anyhow, it’s not like he’s changing the balance of power if he wins.

But I don’t want this man in the Senate. I don’t get to choose, I’m not an Alabaman, but I hope Alabama rejects him.

  158. Is there a provision in Alabama law for that?

Perhaps a penumbra sort of thing, in the EPC, because it is fundamentally undemocratic to sabotage the will of the people by destroying a political party’s chances with such cynical timing. Otherwise, of course there’s no provision in the law to fix this, which is precisely the point of the timing.

there’s substantial corroborating evidence, I think there’s certainly enough basis to believe it to be true. Not to *know* it to be true, but to *believe* it to be true.

I loved _the Usual Suspects_ and _Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil_, and I enjoyed the first couple of seasons of _House of Cards_. I’ve been enjoying _Transparent_, entirely because of the character Tambor plays (the characters of his children on the other hand, are all terrible).

This was the first I’d heard of Tambor as I don’t follow Hollywood gossip. I wish it were shocking, but it isn’t; it’s depressingly normal. It needs to stop.

As between the two, though, Spacey is way worse — his behavior, from what I’ve seen, included aggressive physical assaults, while Tambor’s behavior (so far) doesn’t seem to have.

  165. Dustin, at 159: *today* I think there’s a case for replacement. But the closer we get to the election, the larger the problem of already cast absentee ballots becomes, and at some point you HAVE to draw the line and say “no, sorry, the election has already begun.” When that point is, I think, depends on the logistics of the state’s election process — I can talk in high level theory about how it ought to work in my mind, but I don’t know Alabama specifics.

Votes for someone who is withdrawn or deceased should be considered valid in such a case, and if the deceased or withdrawn person wins, the position should be held as vacant and a new appointment or election held.

Not originally. They only had large and small capitals. The alphabet you see in the New Testament and now, with lower case letters and diacritic marks, was developed in Alexandria around the turn of the third century BC with special credit given to Aristophanes of Byzantium.

  199. Near to the east
In a part of ancient Greece
In an ancient land called Macedonia
    Was born a son
    To Philip of Macedon
The legend his name was Alexander

    At the age of nineteen
    He became the Macedon King
And he swore to free all of Asia Minor
    By the Aegian Sea
    In 334 B.C.
He utterly beat the armies of Persia

    [Chorus:]
    Alexander the Great
His name struck fear into hearts of men
    Alexander the Great
Became a legend ‘mongst mortal men

    King Darius the third
    Defeated fled Persia
The Scythians fell by the river Jaxartes
Then Egypt fell to the Macedon King as well
And he founded the city called Alexandria

    By the Tigris river
    He met King Darius again
And crushed him again in the battle of Arbela
    Entering Babylon
    And Susa, treasures he found
Took Persepolis the capital of Persia

    [Chorus:]
    Alexander the Great
His name struck fear into hearts of men
    Alexander the Great
Became a God amongst mortal men

A Phrygian King had bound a chariot yoke
And Alexander cut the ‘Gordian knot’
And legend said that who untied the knot
He would become the master of Asia

Hellenism he spread far and wide
    The Macedonian learned mind
Their culture was a western way of life
He paved the way for Christianity

    Marching on, marching on
The battle weary marching side by side
    Alexander’s army line by line
They wouldn’t follow him to India
Tired of the combat, pain and the glory

    Alexander the Great
His name struck fear into hearts of men
