What Does All This New Russia News Mean?
Two big stories out on Russia in the past day. Let’s recap and briefly analyze.
First, as Caleb Howe discussed here, Robert Mueller has filed his first charges. Behind Door #1: Paul Manafort. Behind Door #2: Michael Flynn. Behind Door #3: A goat. (Scapegoat?) If a door is opened and it does not contain the indicted person or animal, should you switch your guess? I don’t know, since Monty is no longer here to tell us. I do know that Adam Steinbaugh had the Tweet of the Day with this:

Second story: what many of us strongly suspected is now crystal clear: Natalia Veselnitskaya was acting as a Kremlin cutout when she met with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and The Man Behind Door Number 1. Susan Wright discussed this yesterday, and the article can be found in the #FAKENEWSNEWYORKTIMES!!1!:
Natalia V. Veselnitskaya arrived at a meeting at Trump Tower in June 2016 hoping to interest top Trump campaign officials in the contents of a memo she believed contained information damaging to the Democratic Party and, by extension, Hillary Clinton. The material was the fruit of her research as a private lawyer, she has repeatedly said, and any suggestion that she was acting at the Kremlin’s behest that day is anti-Russia “hysteria.”
But interviews and records show that in the months before the meeting, Ms. Veselnitskaya had discussed the allegations with one of Russia’s most powerful officials, the prosecutor general, Yuri Y. Chaika. And the memo she brought with her closely followed a document that Mr. Chaika’s office had given to an American congressman two months earlier, incorporating some paragraphs verbatim.
The coordination between the Trump Tower visitor and the Russian prosecutor general undercuts Ms. Veselnitskaya’s account that she was a purely independent actor when she sat down with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, and Paul J. Manafort, then the Trump campaign chairman.
It also suggests that emails from an intermediary to the younger Mr. Trump promising that Ms. Veselnitskaya would arrive with information from Russian prosecutors were rooted at least partly in fact — not mere “puffery,” as the president’s son later said.
If you didn’t care that Trump Jr. was going to the meeting explicitly to get dirt on Hillary that he believed to be sourced from a high-level Russian prosecutor, then you won’t care that the dirt was indeed coming from the Kremlin.
Also, you’re probably a partisan hack who would have screamed to high heaven if Hillary’s troops had done the same.
What does it all mean? That partisans are gonna partisan.
Have we gotten to coordination yet, as to Hillary or Trump? No. Do we have utterly nasty politics being played, by the Hillary side and the Trump side? Yes. Will Democrats care about only one half of this? Yes. Will Republicans care only about the other half? Yes.

Hillary’s campaign paid for a dossier that contained information obtained by Steele sourced to Russian intelligence. This is suggestive of collusion, just as top Trump campaign officials meeting with a Kremlin cutout to obtain information about the opposing candidate is suggestive of collusion. But neither situation yet rises to conclusive proof of cooperation between the campaign and the Russian government. If you want to make that case, you have to explain, lay out your argument, and do more than say “Hillary paid for the dossier!” If that’s all you say, I can retort with “Trump’s campaign manager met with a Kremlin cutout expressly for the purpose of getting information about Hillary sourced to the Kremlin!” Yelling and conclusionary partisan statements don’t get us anywhere. Why not wait and see what comes of all this?

No one who attended the meeting thought she was an independent investigator. They thought an official from the Russian government was about to give them information on how they illegally colluded with the Clinton campaign.
Which doesn’t make sense, because Russia would never admit to wrongdoing on their part (taking illegal cash payments from Clinton) JUST to help Trump. That info would give the POTUS tremendous amount of leverage. But who wouldn’t want to obtain this kind of “dirt” if they offered it? Don Jr says he would contacted his attorney if he ever got such intel. We don’t know that for sure, but that would have been the right move.
The lawyer apparently said a lot of nonsense that no one in the meeting found interesting. Kushner left early. The Russians probably wanted to see if they could influence Don Jr and purposely laid out sweet sounding gibberish to gauge his interest. She relied on some sort of a document that was also given to another American politican, per NYT.

In addition to their involvement with the Kremlin, Fusion GPS was hired by Derwick Associates, a Venezuelan firm of five young guys with no background in the energy business. Derwick proceeded to skim billions off of rigged (no bid) contracts with Hugo Chavez’ regime. (Chavez had brought in Gazprom and Gazprombank to help run Venezuela’s nationalized oil company after Chavez fired 20,000 of its employees.)
Fusion GPS was used to kill a Wall Street Journal investigative reporter’s story about this corruption.
All of the above was related by Alek Boyd, who was described as a “Venezuelan investigative reporter” to Lee Smith, a senior editor with the Weekly Standard and a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute that has written extensively about Fusion GPS for Tablet. But Boyd also worked for Halvorssen at the Human Rights Foundation. And Halvorssen’s family was a part of the pre-Chavez oligarchy in Venezuela.
Interesting, no? But it gets better.
Bill Browder, whom our host wrote of in his 6 part series on the Russian kleptocracy, testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee that Fusion GPS was hired by the Russian femme fatale Veselnitskaya in order to smear Browder and Alek Boyd, the latter claiming that Fusion GPS branded him a pedophile, sexual deviant, and drug addict.
So, you’ve got Fusion GPS, the Russkies, and the Dems in one corrupt camp, and those that are exposing their misdeeds: Browder, Lee Smith (you can’t get any more right-wing establishmentarian than Lee), Halvorssen, and Boyd in the other. Both sides are using the press to their own ends.
Halvorssen is a shady character….he was probably motivated by his familial ties rather than any allegiance to Browder or the right-wingers.

Another interesting aspect is Browder’s attempted censorship of Andrei Nekrasov’s documentary “The Magnitsky Act”. Why? Forget the First Amendment….why would Browder care? Maybe it’s because Nekrasov, who has been critical of the Russian government and Putin in particular, documents how he went from trusting Browder’s word to disbelieving it. The director says he began to doubt the hedge fund manager after reading the actual police reports in Russian. For example, Nekrasov argues that Magnitsky’s first contact with the police was not a voluntary act of whistleblowing, as Browder maintains, but a record of the police questioning him as a key witness in a tax evasion investigation.
As with a babushka doll, perhaps someday we’ll get to the bottom of this.

well, we now know that Fusion GPS was hired by the Democrats in April (March but started getting paid in April) and ASteele’s work probably goes back 2 months before June.
So,
1. Steele first was hired by Fusion GPS in 2010.
2. He produced 16 memoes for Fusion in 2016. That’s fewer than the number of separate reports, so they may have been summaries.
3. He briefed reporters in 2016..
4. But he did “provide any of the pre-election memoranda to media organizations or journalists, [nor] authorize anyone to do so.” He gave them, nothing in written form, nor did he prepare anything to be given to reporters. That, therefore, (anything written material) came from Fusion GPS. Which had reporters then talk to Steele.

Its hard to pin this on Mueller and his staff because there are 4 distinct groups of individuals that the leak could come from.
1. The Prosecutor’s office.
2. The grand jury members
3. The court staff
4. In this case, DOJ which by regulation must be advised when an indictment is being sought.
The fact that the only thing that has leaked out is the fact that an indictment has being issued by the GJ and sealed by the Court, without naming the person involved, suggests to me that its a grand juror, and the disclosure might not have been meant for the press.
Remember, CNN described the source as someone “who had been briefed on the matter.” Heck, that could be the Uncle Joe of the grand jury foreperson.

Manafort was called second (or it is so reported) The indictment is still sealed, and will probably be made public at the arraignment, which could be minutes or hours from now.
They were thinking there could be more, but as time goes on and there’s no more news, it looks like that’s it.

When they find out what the indictment is about, most headlines and first paragraphs will describe the type of law allegedly violated, and anything that gets past the third or fourth paragraph will attempt to describe the alleged illegal acts.
The real mystery here is how did someone – and it’s more than one person – whom Russia probably knew was corrupt or suspected could be corrupted, or at least appoint others who were, get into such high positions in the Trump campaign?
Not, I think, because Trump was knowingly taking orders or advice from Vladimir Putin, which is what partisan Democrats would want us to say..

The only relevance is how somebody whom Russia would have reason to know, or at least suspect, could be bought by them, wound up in the position he did.
Not I think, because Trump was knowingly taking orders or advice from Vladimir Putin. The on;y way you can make any such claim is to say that Trump had a longstanding corrupt relationship with Russia – that he and Manafort were part of the same corruption, like some of Christopher Steele’s sources tried to tell him. But that is manifestly not so.
Trump simply had very little dealings in or with Russia, and most of his attempts to get any failed – probably because he wouldn’t make any kickbacks. I would say he never took the hint(s).

One thing he said was that in charging Manafort tried to hide the fact he was a foreign agent, you had him committing a felony to protect a misdemeanor – a misdemeanor which is rarely if ever prosecuted – they just get foreign agents to register. Of course someone could do that; it’s not a big objection.
The other thing I remember Levin saying is that Manafort was charged with money laundering, but not with evading taxes! (which was presumably the underlying motive or crime.)
I think here maybe the prosecutors have competing theories as to what was going on. Maybe Manafort was hiding money for Russian government, or oligarchs, and it wasn’t all his. Maybe Manafort has so said.
By the way, he probably could not be indicted for the tax year 2015 because it was all coming out before he had to file his 2015 tax returns on October 15, 2016 and so he probably filed it correctly and told the truth to his accountants and tax attorneys.
Mueller has at least one more sealed indictment, probably of Mike Flynn and/or associates of Mike Flynn.
It always bothered me in the watergate case in which Haldeman and others were indicted, they were charged with covering things up, without the prosecutors having to say or prove what it is they were covering up. that sounds similar.
