Confirmed: Trump Didn’t Send that $25,000 Check Until the Story Broke

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 10:14 pm

The necessary background for this is in Andrea Ruth’s post from yesterday evening. Trump had phoned the dad of fallen soldier Sgt. Dillon Baldbridge, and the dad said that his ex was getting the Pentagon’s $100k death benefit, while dad was nearly broke. In a seemingly magnanimous gesture, Trump promised to pay the dad $25,000 of his own personal funds. Dad later opened the mail and saw a card of condolence from Trump — but no check. Trump’s spokeshole was asked about this and she said the check was, um, in the mail. Also: HOW DARE THE MEDIA POLITICIZE THIS DAMMIT?!?!?!

So when was it actually sent? You guessed it: yesterday. The same day it hit the news:

President Donald Trump sent a $25,000 personal check to the family of a fallen soldier the same day that The Washington Post reported that he had promised the soldier’s father a personal donation during a June condolence call but never followed through.

A White House official confirms to CNN that the President sent a personal check Wednesday to the family of Army Cpl. Dillon Baldridge Wednesday. Baldridge, 22, was killed in June by an Afghan police officer.

Had the Washington Post not reported it, he was never going to send that man a dime. Not one thin dime.

This would be shockingly tawdry behavior, if we hadn’t seen it before. Remember when Trump ran like a baby from confronting Megyn Kelly in the debate just before Iowa? He used a fundraiser for vets as his fig leaf, and promised a cool million to veterans’ charities. Trouble was, he never had any intention of actually paying. The checks were sent only after David Farenthold of the #FAKENEWSBEZOSPOST shamed Trump into it.

Donald Trump has the morals of an out-of-control three-year-old. I’d say he should be ashamed, but he lacks the capacity for it. The people who should really be ashamed are the people who defend him when stories like this break. But they obviously lack the capacity for shame too.

If you’re unwilling to condemn this as bad behavior, don’t ever talk to me about the behavior of any other politician from any party ever again. Criticize their policies all you like. But you have forfeited any right to be taken seriously on the issue of character, if you can’t stand up and say: “Wow. What a s**tbag this guy Trump is, with this particular move.”

Yes, Donald Trump is an assh0le. We’ve known that for how long? It is possible that his flunkies effed up, but more likely Trump forgot it the moment he was off the phone.

    There. I condemn it.

Now, speaking of other politicians bad behavior, how about those Ruskies paying millions to the Clintons to undermine our national security?

  9. Probably the most annoying thing about Donald Trump (and yes, it’s well-contested) is his penchant for focusing the nation’s attention on petty squabbles. Gone are the days of arguments about foreign policy or economic theories, what’s REALLY important is who said what to whom, when about truly stupid thing.

It’s depressing. I feel like I’ve been locked into some daytime court show. How much longer before we get down to the level of “That bitch stole my man” and similar discussions. Maybe Trump will dump Melania for a younger model.

For realizing the left and their willing accomplices in the press used this incident to ignore the bad news for Hillary? on the *Russian* front I renounce myself. And condemn Trump.

I also praise Rep. Frederica S. Frederica has shown herself to be an up-and-comer in the apparatchik in the mold of comrade Maxine and we wish her more success in shining the Light of Truth on these urgent government failures of Trumps. 19. This soldier gets killed. And his putative father’s complaint is that he’s not making any money out of it. Would he have gotten anything if the kid had not been killed? Is there maybe some reason why the kid wanted his mother to have the death benefit and not this “Gold Star” daddy? A reason possibly hinted at by daddy’s disappointment that he got a condolence letter and not a check?

I suppose Trump’s wives and kids can condemn Trump. For throwing the family’s money away. For making a rash promise he should not have made, and compounding his foolishness by fulfilling it, even if tardily, for the sake of appearances.

Since you think that subject is worth seven posts, why don’t you start your own blog and write all seven posts? Or maybe write a few of them for our host.

I don’t understand people sometimes. Patterico writes about Hillary and Russia, and that post drew 139 comments. He writes about Trump breaking a personal promise (contrasted with a political promise), and people are up in arms that he didn’t write enough about Hillary and Russia.

A certain segment of commenters here seem to get angry whenever Patterico criticizes Trump. But these same commenters would be calling for Obama’s head had he done something similar. Patterico has shown no bias: he criticizes people from both parties, and gives credit where and when it is due. But no criticism of Trump — no matter how well-deserved — will ever be tolerated by some.

    Chuck Bartowski (bc1c71)

  60. no i’m saying he did more posts on subject a than on subject b (so far)

That’s meaningless. It’s patently obvious that he did two posts about Subject A. And the second one of those posts was a rebuttal to the first. It’s also patently obvious that he did one post about Subject B, and there was no rebuttal to that post.

The original complaint was that Patterico was ignoring Subject B, when he had already covered that subject. Why do you suppose someone would complain about that?

    Chuck Bartowski (bc1c71)

  61. “German security officials have accused the Iranian regime of pursuing its goal to build missiles armed with nuclear warheads, the Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel reported.

“Despite the nuclear agreement [reached with world powers in July 2015], Iran has not given up its illegal activities in Germany. The mullah regime also made efforts this year to obtain material from [German] firms for its nuclear program and the construction of missiles, said security sources,” Der Tagesspiegel wrote on Friday.”

    we just don’t know

but we know a lot more about the russian uranium fbi corruption story and it raises many, many troubling questions (i repeated the word many to emphasize that there are vast implications to the russian uranium fbi corruption story, many of which have yet to be explored here and indeed elsewhere as well)

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  65. I think things like this often happen to Presidents — where people the President calls ask for special help of consideration. It’s probably another reason, among many, why Presidents don’t make more calls. They are unscripted and can have unpredictable results.

Former Presidents in this situation would have expressed sympathy for the father’s economic problems and promised to have a staffer contact him regarding assistance he might qualify for. Maybe there are state and local resources, or even military assistance groups for extended family members.

But Trump didn’t do that and promised to send this father $25,000 of his own funds. It was both a magnanimous and a stupid gesture. The last thing someone who has trouble managing money needs is a big influx of cash, instead of help planning for their future needs. But, to his credit, Trump did feel a desire to help and he did follow through when pressed.

The lesson is: Trump needs to be pressured to keep his promises, so we need to pressure him instead of defend whatever he does. Trump has no personal incentive to keep promises if he’s not pressured.

No, the kid named his mother as the beneficiary as he had the right to. It’s like life insurance.

How did the father get in on the conference call?

Dillon Baldridge’s biography isn’t clear. When did they get divorced? Who had custody or spent more time with him?

Anyway the fact that his father (now married to a different woman than Dillon’s mother) was being called created the impression, or the father created the impression, at least with Donald Trump, that he should have been the rightful beneficiary, and/or that omitting him was an oversight on the part of his son. Because surely he loved both parents.

But probably one reason he was broke because his son was probably not supporting him.

It took 18 months for President Barack Obama to fulfill a similar promise made to the family of Kayla Mueller, who was killed in 2015 while she was held captive by the Islamic State in Syria. Obama’s undisclosed sum, for a charity set up in Mueller’s name, arrived only after a report by ABC News called attention to what the president later described as an oversight.

Yep. And bingo. Though the staff are accountable to the boss, and the boss is accountable for his staff. But in what large organization does this not occasionally happen? I’ve had to prompt insurance companies and such quite often. And that is with money OWED to me not a promised gift. It’s not like Clintons and Haiti or some such. Some very wealthy people owe me a good 5 figures of income right now. I’m not happy about it but I understand the situation and deal with it as necessary in the context of the situation.

  99. Patterico: there is nothing to “spin” here.

The American people elected a petty, narcissistic huckster as President, and he is behaving true to form.

I did not vote for him, I wish he was not President, but we are stuck with him for now.

By the same token, I did not vote for the closet Marxist who used his charm and black skin to get into the White House, and I wished he had never been elected. But we were stuck with him for eight years.

Nor did I vote for the hectoring harridan who wanted to succeed him and impose her vision of a socialistic kleptocracy on the nation.

I had the luxury of voting for a third party candidate, because I live in a very blue state and so my vote made zero difference. Had someone held a gun my head and forced me to chose, I would have chosen the narcissistic huckster over the hectoring harridan. Because in the long run he will cause less damage.

During the election, I joked that our choice was like choosing between diarrhea and constipation. They are both very annoying. But the former is just very messy. The latter in the long run is a serious health problem. ‘Nuf said.

Smart to go after the Congresswoman with the funny hat. I did not see the whole thing. I assume he was also smart enough not to mention the mom who publicly supported the Congresswoman’s version…

I further assume he either faced no questions about the actual content of the call (like did Trump say he knew what he signed up for) or refused to answer them citing privacy. Ditto questions about how he felt about Trump dragging his son’s death into it.

All of this would have been my advice to him and he does not seem dumb.

Lol, Bored Lawyer. The analogy may be more apt than you realize. Diarrhea can be deadly but many people don’t realize it.

  116. Bored Lawyer was the one who compared Trump to diarrhea. It was not I, and I disclaim any approval of such a comparison. Denounced and deplored.

    Patterico (bd09f6)

  117. @116. Watched it. His rebuttal to the congresswoman was fair game.

But frankly, you can cut him some slack on some of it as parts were a little arrogant in spots: “If you’re ‘not in the family’ you don’t know how to make these calls…’ says CoS Kelly at the WH Briefing presser today.

With all due respect to Kelly, and his own personal loss, military personnel aren’t the only walk of life to suffer sudden loss, as first responders climbing into the WTC know all too well– or concert goers in Las Vegas- and pretty much all of us w/family and friends know the horrible pain and difficulty facing us when we have to ‘make that call’ at a passing. It’s never, never easy– whether you’re in uniform or civilian.

“We don’t look down you who haven’t served. In fact, we feel bad for you…” says Kelly.

That’s surely was an insular line. Because, as the President of the United States of America said: you knew what you signed up for.

It’s never, never easy– whether you’re in uniform or civilian– to have to “make that call.”

It was a good reminder, after Kelly left the podium, at how lucky we are to have people willing to volunteer– and how wise it is to have civilian control of government.

Kelly did say Trump had said something like that but Kelly used other words.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  119. At 7:40 kelly tells about it.

    (the call was Tuesday)

Kelly noptes the phone call is made to the next of kin ONLY if the next of kin agreees to accept the call. Sometimes they don’t. A pre-call is made.

“And he said to me ‘what do I say?’

But let me tell you…what my best freend…. told me:

….He was doing exactly what he wanted to do, when he wss killed. He knew what he was getting into by joining the MArin..by by joining that 1% He knew what the possibilities were because we are at war. And when he died….he was surrounded by the best men on this earth, his friends…That’s what the president tried to say to…four families the other day.

I was stunned when I came to work yesterday morning – and broken hearted – at when I saw a member of Congress doing…

[A president who] and in his way tried to express that opinion ..that he was a brave man, a fallen hero. He knew what he was getting himself into, because he enlisted. There is no reason to enlist, he enlisted. And he was where he wanted to be, exactly where he wanted to be with exactly with the people he wanted to be with when his life was taken That was the message. That was the message that was message. That was the message that was transmitted.

Kelly was stunned even that the member of Congress listened in. Kelly went to Arlington cemetery and walked among the stones.
