New York Times Gives Trump a Taste of That Highly Addictive Media Praise
The New York Times is looking to groom their next chump, with a piece titled Bound to No Party, Trump Upends 150 Years of Two-Party Rule. The piece dangles the possibility of media approval in front of Trump like a carrot on a stick tied to the head of a donkey:
Now in the White House, President Trump demonstrated this past week that he still imagines himself a solitary cowboy as he abandoned Republican congressional leaders to forge a short-term fiscal deal with Democrats. Although elected as a Republican last year, Mr. Trump has shown in the nearly eight months in office that he is, in many ways, the first independent to hold the presidency since the advent of the current two-party system around the time of the Civil War.
He’s more presidential than anyone, except maybe Abraham Lincoln! The tool who wrote this, Peter Baker, no doubt had that absurd Trump claim in mind when he penned that line. Baker continues to ladle on the praise for Trump’s independence:
In recent weeks, he has quarreled more with fellow Republicans than with the opposition, blasting congressional leaders on Twitter, ousting former party officials in his White House, embracing primary challenges to incumbent lawmakers who defied him and blaming Republican figures for not advancing his policy agenda. On Friday, he addressed discontent about his approach with a Twitter post that started, “Republicans, sorry,” as if he were not one of them, and said party leaders had a “death wish.”
Yesterday I explained (adding my voice to a chorus of others) that Trump is very likely at the beginning of a bromance — not with Chuck Schumer, but with the media. The lure of Strange New Respect is a siren song that cannot be resisted by any aging narcissistic white man who pretends to be conservative but actually leans left in many ways. As I said:
Trump is a media junkie, and he mainlines coverage with his remote. . . . [He] really, really loves good media coverage. And the best way to get it is to tack left.
Just ask Anthony Kennedy. Once you get a dose of that sweet, sweet media approval, you never go back.
As you can see from the above quotes, the folks at The Times are not subtle about what they’re doing. They don’t have to be. They were about as blatantly obvious as they could be with Anthony Kennedy, and it worked like a charm.
But the folks at The Times aren’t dumb. They make clear that the approval is conditional. Keep working with Chuck and Nancy, and we’ll continue to applaud. Pull a fast one, and the Strange New Respect gets it:
None of which means that Mr. Trump has suddenly transformed himself into a center-hugging moderate. More situational than ideological — critics would say opportunist — Mr. Trump adjusts to the moment, and his temporary alignment with Democrats could easily unravel tomorrow. The deal he cut, after all, merely postponed a fight over spending and debt for three months. It did not resolve any substantive disagreements.
If this proves to be a blip, Mr. President, we’ll call you an opportunist. But if you continue to play ball . . . your reputation in the history books as an admirable voice of independence will be secure.
So, Mr. Trump. What’s it going to be?
Here’s how I see this story in my mind’s eye, presented in the form of a short one-act play.
SCENE: A city sidewalk. Donald Trump is walking down the street, approaching a man in an overcoat. The man with the overcoat is oddly wearing a fedora with a giant card that reads in block letters: “MEDIA.”
MEDIA: [In a low, conspiratorial voice:] Pssst! Hey, Trump! Come over here! [Opens overcoat.] I got a little of what you want here. [Voice lowers to a whisper.] Eternal media adoration.
TRUMP: [Starts to reach towards overcoat.]
MEDIA: [Wagging finger.] Uh-uh! Just a taste. All you get is just a taste . . . today.
TRUMP: How do I get it forever?
MEDIA: [Horns sprout from head, knocking the fedora off. Barbed tail slinks out behind him as he produces a contract. At the top is a title: “ETERNAL LEFTISM.”] You get the best deal we offer. Usually we ask for a soul, but . . . well, anyway, never mind. Trust me, this is nothing you didn’t want to do all your life anyway. [Shoves contract forward.]
TRUMP: Where do I sign?
Only one thing counts in this life: Get them to sign on the line which is dotted. You hear me?
Trump fancies himself to be a guy who makes “great deals.” I fear he is on the verge of making a deal with the media: leftism in exchange for praise.
The con man is getting conned. But the real victim of this particular con is not Trump. It’s you and me.

Expecting fledgling campaigns to compete across the breadth of California and its multiple high-priced media markets, and turn out the vote in a state with 1/8 of the population of the whole country, is going to change things in a lot of other ways, if it happens. For one, it would seem to require a whole new level of early fundraising and organization to be considered viable.

Trump’s recent dizzying reversal on the North American Free Trade Agreement reportedly came about when two Cabinet secretaries showed him a map of who’d be hurt if he killed the pact with Canada and Mexico: his own voters. But you would not be safe in assuming Trump will change his mind if he learns something will hurt his voters. If that were the case, he’d be trying to save Obamacare instead of destroy it. There is plenty of evidence and even a map that show the House Republican health plan would hit hardest by far in the states he carried.

Scott opposed a high speed train in central Florida, which would have cut down on automobile use and forestalled thousands of tons of CO2 emissions.
Scott told Florida state employees not to use the term climate change. That included scientists working for the state. Our current head of the anti-EPA, Scott Pruitt, has taken over that Scott policy and applied it to the entire Federal

So, what is being said here is that the NYT is trying on Trump pretty much exactly the same “we’ll praise you just so long as you follow our agenda, and if you don’t you;re a Nazi again” strategy the Media used on him in the Primaries.

I’m not saying Trump is a good President, or smart, but he has shown that he knows this play, and can turn it on the Liberal Left with a vengeance.

I gather that there’s a script that’s close (if that’s the right word for the gizmo) but not quite working — I admit to not having tried it out. I certainly wouldn’t mind the trivial inconvenience of having to go through a bookmark for it to kick in, and being able to update the blacklisted commenters would be really useful.
I’d gladly kick in the first $100 (to either the writer or his/her favorite charity, perhaps payable through an Amazon gift card with the side-understanding the credit will be used to order via Patterico.com?) to commission such a thing. Being freed from the poopy-tranny comments alone is worth that much to me. Our host could consider posting a permanent link to the instructions somewhere in his sidebar, perhaps.
@ nk: I do something similar, but my eye is naturally drawn to the start of each comment rather than the commenter’s name even if I’m scrolling up. Even if I manage to ignore 9 out of 10, the frequency of those comments as a proportion of the total means I’m still reading poopy-tranny stuff almost every time I check for new comments on a post I’m interested in.

If happyfeet makes up another third (I have not counted) then that’s 3 commenters responsible for 60-70% of comments, which is probably not a recipe for constructive discussion.
If these three could take it upon themselves voluntarily to cut back about 50%, that would go a long way to raising the tenor here–if any of them has any desire to do anything but griefing, that is.

Center-right Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull of Australia’s Liberal Party is in a tricky spot. Polls show the Australian people support same-sex marriage. All the other parties support same-sex marriage. Turnbull (and some other Liberal MPs) support same sex-marriage. But a majority of the Liberal Party doesn’t, and in a country where internal party coups have become the norm, you don’t want to anger your own side.
So Turnbull and the Liberals have instead decided to complicate everything with a convoluted non-binding survey of the Australian people. Presumably, Turnbull hopes to use the survey result to allow same-sex marriage a vote in Parliament without getting blamed for it by his party’s right-wing.
Same-sex marriage proponents hate this plan because they believe that their rights should not be put up to a vote, and they think Turnbull’s proposal will lead to a divisive campaign. And it’s voluntary in a country where voting has normally been compulsory for nearly a century, which risks turnout playing a key factor in a way that Australia isn’t used to.
All that said, the survey will probably go ahead, and it will probably show a majority of Australians in favor of same-sex marriage (polling has found most Australians approve of the idea). Turnbull will then probably allow a vote and it will probably pass. Thank you for the reply. I’ve been thinking over Simon Jester’s comments comparing the behavior to that of a boorish guest at a party hosted by another and consider the comparison slightly off. It seems closer to the situation involved in managing an enterprise rather than hosting a party every day. Most bars or restaurants boot boorish incontinent drunks rather quickly. Obviously, this isn’t a bar but it seems to me that allowing those weary of wading through the sewage emitted by very few to screen out the trash by posting a link to the script is a reasonable solution.

My house seems fine, but high winds for the rest of the night mean I can’t get out to check until tomorrow. Thanks be to God, power flickered several times (including just fifteen minutes ago) but has stayed on all day. I have lost cell phone service, though. I got the equivalent of a strong tropical storm with some hurricane winds ( 85-90 mph gusts) especially during a two hour stretch early to mid afternoon.
The Keys got hit badly, especially the lower Keys. I am not sure where Ropelight lives, but Marco Island, Naples, and Fort Myers all got hit by the eye. I think Naples got seven feet of sea surge. So he was right to evacuate.

(1) We’ve gotten used to longer URLs as the interwebz have gotten more complicated. It felt odd to me to paste such a huge chunk of copied text into such a tiny text-input field as the one my Chrome browser offers me for the URL when I’m creating a new bookmark. But don’t let that deter you, as it did me for too long. This isn’t a hard installation.
(2) Updating it will likewise be easy after saving said new bookmark. All one need do is right-click on the bookmark; select “edit”; and then, when the text-input field appears, left-click anywhere within it (without changing any characters) and then hold down the CTRL key and the A key at the same time (to highlight ALL of the text, including the stuff spilling off to either side that won’t fit into the text-input field). You can copy that text into any kind of text editor — I use the old Windows standby, Notepad, but any word processor should work. You can then make the changes to the list of blackballed user names, adding or subtracting as necessary.
(3) In actual use, it doesn’t matter how you get to any individual post in Patterico.com, whether from another already-existing bookmark or from entering “patterico.com” in your browser search bar and then clicking on an individual post, or whatever. ONCE YOU’RE THERE, on that webpage that is displaying not only the post but also the comments, then you can click the bookmark you’ve saved with this script in it, and the script then reloads that same page but with modifications. Specifically, it reloads the same page, but any comments by the blacklisted names only show the commenter’s name and the comment number, date, and time, with the entire text that was in the comment omitted. Thus one can still cross-reference and refer back to others’ comments using their comment numbers — those aren’t changed by the script.
(4) If you leave a comment yourself, hitting “Submit Comment” is going to reload the page, so the blocked comments will re-appear. And if you want to re-block them, you need to again click on your script bookmark. That’s not much trouble, and to my surprise, I continue to get pleasure from blocking particular commenters’ text from appearing on my screen every single time. It’s like having a “Mute” button on a remote control; just as I enjoy muting Alec Baldwin every time one of his TV commercials appear, I will likewise enjoy muting particular regular commenters here who add to my angst without ever engaging in anything remotely resembling a coherent or intellectually honest thought.
This is worth the exit, and not that hard to set up. I encourage anyone even remotely curious about it to try it out.

It just is an instruction that the saved script (the lines of code) is giving to your web browser. Patterico’s web-hosting company probably doesn’t get any indication when a reader has done this, other than perhaps another page reload, which if anything, is good for his stats. In other words, Patterico’s server isn’t involved in executing the script, it’s just sending out the normal 1s and 0s that tell your browser what to show when you ask for patterico.com. This script technique puts the decision and its details (including who anyone has chosen to blacklist) at the lowest and therefore probably the most private level. It’s quite elegant, I think. Also dirt cheap, as in free.
I didn’t mention, although I’ve seen other commenters mention it before without understanding it, but:
If you do decide you want to read a particular comment by someone you’ve filtered, you can either just reload the whole page (in which all the unfiltered comments will re-appear) or you can just left-click on the particular filtered comment that you want to read. (Patterico’s variable shade bars makes it easy to see where one comment stops and the other starts for this purpose.)
Elegant stuff.
Someone skilled in technical writing — a discipline of its own as a subset of good writing and editing generally — could do a really bang-up set of instructions, building on what various folks have already said on this post or prior ones. (I lack the required gift of terseness, I think.)

There are many of you whose comments I’ve looked for in particular because of our past exchanges. But there are also the occasional commenters, the lurkers who pop in rarely, and the absolutely random.
This doesn’t screen those. This only screens people whom each individual reader here decides he or she doesn’t care to hear from again as a default setting.
In law sometimes there’s a concept used in constitutional analysis, usually in connection with burdening some fundamental constitutional right, called the “least restrictive means” doctrine. My decisions whom to filter don’t affect DRJ’s or Simon’s. And while I may only want to filter, say, five or six regular commenters, the many of you who are more tolerant than I am can filter out only one or two. Or fifteen.
It appears that you can add some pretty large number of individual names, by the way, so long as you keep the syntax right. Just insert the additional names with another of the same separator marks between the names as is already in the example (before you edit it, something like “name3” or “name4.” The separator marks in the script, by the way, are the up-and-down mark | which I don’t know the name for, but which is usually on the same key as the backslant character … this doohickey \ ….
If more people use this gizmo, our host and his co-bloggers may be spared some stress and drama themselves in their moderating and intermediating efforts, which can only be a good thing, because they deserve so much BETTER than that!

RSS in principle allows you to read the posts and comments in a reader, and depending on the features of the reader, you can filter the comments (or posts) according to criteria of your choosing.
There are RSS reader extensions for most browsers. Just as a proof of concept to play around, I installed one for Chrome (“Feedly”) and an ancilliary filtering/sorting extension (“Feedly filtering and sorting”). It seems to work as expected, but currently, it appears that the site only provides the 10 most recent comments, which is too few to really be useful. If there were interest, I assume that is just a switch to change somewhere in the configuration. (The other feed offers the 10 most recent *posts*, which is a more reasonable setting…)
As far as I’m aware, an RSS reader cannot allow you to post or reply to a comment, however.

Miss North Dakota, Cara Mund, was named Miss America 2018 Sunday night in Atlantic City following a night of political questions ranging from the Trump administration’s alleged collusion with Russia to Confederate monuments.
The event got political after the Miss America candidates were asked multiple questions about the current political climate and President Trump during the question-and-answer session.
During one of the onstage interviews, Mund said Trump was wrong to pull the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accord aimed at combating climate change.
“I do believe it’s a bad decision,’ she said. “Once we reject that, we take ourselves out of the negotiation table and that’s something that we really need to keep in mind.”
Miss Texas Margana Wood condemned Trump’s coddling of White Supremacists.
“I think that the white supremacist issue, it was very obvious, that it was a terrorist attack. And I think that President Donald Trump should’ve made a statement earlier addressing the fact, and in making sure all Americans feel safe in this country. That is the number one issue right now.”

If the griefers actually want to be read, they would need to stop griefing and actually engage people substantively.
There are plenty of anti-Trump, non-conservative voices here who are not griefers and are read and responded to, and that will continue to be the case.
Of course a script makes it easiER to tune out anyone that one doesn’t wish to hear, but people have always had that power. The griefers are treated as such because of their griefing behavior, not because they are noble bearers of uncomfortable truths.

If you view this info through the lens of leftist understanding, you would know that it would be passed over because the spirit of his thought was consonant with the media narative, after all, the U.S, “had it coming” in their twisted minds, so it would not have been used used even if it was made available from many sources. He is kind of a joke. Historically, he claims to be everywhere, sort of like Zelig. If you just go searching, you will find amazingly tall tales of his knowing Von Braun, being present at rock throwing at the US-Mexico border, playing soccer at the American Embassy in Moscow, owning fleets of expensive cars, traveling all over the world and making a difference. Add to that his extensive experience at the World Trade Center.
He carries on like this for a while. Quotes old movies. Sneers at people.
Then he goes away.
Then the cycle repeats.
But he’s pretty harmless, despite the whiff of Jason Bourne he wants to emit.
