The Real Bromance Isn’t the One Between Trump and Schumer

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 11:30 am

#FAKENEWSCNN says there is a real Trump-Schumer bromance developing:

There seems to be a bromance brewing between President Donald Trump and Sen. Chuck Schumer.

That’s according to Rep. Pete King, who attended a meeting at the White House on Thursday with New York and New Jersey officials to discuss a transportation project called the Gateway Program.

“He and Chuck — both of them would interrupt each other at times — and they’d go back and forth and Chuck would say something and smile and the President would look at him and smile,” King told CNN Thursday evening. “This went on for the whole — let’s say the meeting was around 40 minutes or so? It was almost like a love-in at times.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Schumer Trump Smaller

This is amusing, but perhaps a little overstated. The real bromance is between Trump and the media. Susan Wright already quoted this passage describing the aftermath of the “give Chuck and Nancy exactly what they wanted” Great Deal, but it’s worth re-emphasizing:

Trump specifically mentioned TV segments praising the deal and indicated he’d been watching in a call with Schumer, two people said. And he was jovial in a call with Pelosi and agreed to send a tweet she asked for about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, these people said, while also mentioning the attention the deal had gotten. He indicated to both leaders he would be willing to work together again.

“He seemed super upbeat,” one person familiar with the calls said.

Another person familiar with the calls said Trump told Pelosi her coverage was even better than his. “The press has been incredible,” Trump said.

Well, sure they were. All you have do to get the press to be incredible is to agree with Chuck and Nancy every time.

This is a problem, because Trump is a media junkie, and he mainlines coverage with his remote. As Rich Lowry says:

Trump is the most unusual combination of a politician who, on one hand, was elected president by thumbing his nose at media elites and trampling on their dearest beliefs and, on the other, is obsessed about what media elites write and say about him.

. . . .

It’s not just that Trump watches — he really cares. In the normal course of things, a president wouldn’t know who pro-Trump commentator Jeffrey Lord is, let alone complain about his firing from CNN in public, as Trump did at his Phoenix rally.

When Laura Ingraham mentioned on “Fox & Friends” last week that the administration needs to do a better job of filling empty positions, Trump tweeted a response immediately and directly (the positions aren’t needed, he said).

He can’t bear not to watch “Morning Joe,” the buzzy MSNBC program, even when he insists he doesn’t, and, of course, launched a contemptible attack on co-host Mika Brzezinski in retaliation for her criticisms of him.

Trump time and again demonstrates that he is wounded by what he hears on TV.

Trump really, really loves good media coverage. And the best way to get it is to tack left.

Just ask Anthony Kennedy. Once you get a dose of that sweet, sweet media approval, you never go back.

House sends $15 billion Harvey aid package to Trump despite boos, hisses from Republicans

The House on Friday overwhelmingly approved a $15.25 billion disaster aid package that also extended government funding and the federal borrowing limit until Dec. 8, moments after Republicans vented their disappointment to two top White House officials over the deal struck this week by President Trump.

The measure passed 316-90; every member opposed was a Republican.

The ideological spread among Republicans is wider than aming Democrats. And on top of that the Democrarts are tightly controlled by a political machine which doles out campaign funds and help.

Nothing important or mildly controversial can pass with just Republican votes. (Of course nothing can pass with just Democratic votes either, and it would lose by a larger margin.)

The Wall Street Journal said the Republicans should treat Trump like a political indepedent. He seems to ebe treating them that way himself.

We must respect his authority and constitutional responsibilities. We must, where we can, cooperate with him. But we are not his subordinates. We don’t answer to him. We answer to the American people. We must be diligent in discharging our responsibility to serve as a check on his power. And we should value our identity as members of Congress more than our partisan affiliation.

Jonah Goldberg thinks the pivot won’t work because Trump has made himself too radioactive for the Democratic rank-and-file, and much of his agenda is also radioactive (probably not – only immigration) but he says the main reason it will fail is that he says Trump doesn’t know what he is doing.

Those weren’t thing McCain opposes. He was thinking of bills he doesn’t like. Or of not passing bills he does.

As for the debt ceiling, once Trump negotiated it, Mitch McConnell couldn’t try to force Democrats to agree to alonger extension of the debt ceiling, which is oart McConnell, Ryan and his Treasury Secretary wanted.

The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout “Save us!”…

in desperate want of the knowledge of their place

  90. @67 felipe

Watchmen has something in common with Ukraine.

    Pinandpuller (9c445e)

  91. @90. Could be, Mr. Feet. Still, the loudest outrage comes from terrified conservative ideologues cut loose and set adrift. “In case of emergency, break glass and shout ‘Reagan'” just doesn’t work anymore.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  92. well precisely so Mr. DCSCA

President Trump doesn’t merely have the wrong ideology – he doesn’t have one at all!

    It’s unheard of.

    It won’t do.

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  93. He probably does.

    nk (9651fb)

  94. Have “one”.

    nk (9651fb)

  95. Now I’m not sayin’ DCSCA is slow-witted, but he used to tend bar back in NYC. The bar would get phone calls every evening, he’d answer and the caller would invariably as him to page a friend… a Stu Pedasso, or Sharon Peter, or Phil McKracken, or Dick Beeter, or Harry Balzac, or a Richard… his friends call him “Big Dick”… Smoker.

The man never caught on and eventually quit the job and hobo’d his way to SoCal.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  96. @71 Dave

Yeah, what do girls know about decorating?

    Pinandpuller (9c445e)

  97. He does have five kids after all.

    nk (9651fb)

  98. But, if his hands are any indicator, it’s very small.

    nk (9651fb)

  99. Pin, you’re all tongue n cheek like happy feet.

Come on. We know you have serious thoughts, both..

    Ben burn (b5f092)

  100. yes yes he’s been fruitful

    palinesquely so

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  101. It’s not wholly aesthetic, Mr. Feets.

    Steve57 (0b1dac)

  102. it’s not wholly reasoned either

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  103. Beldar

If Benedict Arnold’s young wife had owned an ale distributorship he would have been incorruptible and he’d be hailed as a hero to this day.

    Pinandpuller (9c445e)

  104. it’s not wholly reasoned either

    happyfeet (28a91b) — 9/8/2017 @ 4:40 pm

    Did I even imply that?

    Steve57 (0b1dac)

  105. @93. Oh Mister Feet, it’ll do– for now.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  106. Colonel Haiku

I found an R2 unit. It keeps asking for Ben Burn.

I wonder if it means old Ben No Balls Two Strikes?

    Pinandpuller (9c445e)

  107. @104. PeePee, be ‘civil’… don’t tell Beldar there was a war on back then and there just ain’t one raging in America now… ‘cept in the GOP.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  108. Did I even imply that?

no Mr. 57 but nevertrump’s lack of reasoning skills have been much on display of late

with all the huffery and puffery the wailing and the heavy sighing

it’s still very conspicuous – the lack of any explanation of how it is that President Trump’s deal on a three-month debt ceiling extension offends any extant sacred conservative text or injunction

it’s clear as can be that poop-lick paul and sleazy mitch were bereft of any alternative at hand, and there’s nothing at all to stop them from preparing one over the course of the next three months

and yet the wailing of the nevertrump haunts the nights still

and he spends his days at turns mewling plaintively then scrabbling at unseen terrors – all while affecting an air of casual superiority

    it’s quite a display

    happyfeet (28a91b)

Swing for the fences, Mister Feet.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  110. hah you linked that yesterday or someone did

    it’s my favorite new thing

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  111. @108 DMDMA

Arnold’s wife was actually a real estate agent holding an open house.

    Pinandpuller (16b0b5)

  112. You can count Trump’s philosophies on one of his little hands.

    Pinandpuller (16b0b5)

  113. You can count Colbert’s funny jokes on one of his big gay nazi saluting hands.

    Pinandpuller (16b0b5)

  114. @100 Ben Burn

    maybe I’m bipolar curious.

    Pinandpuller (16b0b5)

I saw a guy today with Texas plates HPV ****.

“That’s just mean, man!” Lee Marvin-Payback

    Pinandpuller (9c445e)

  117. texas is soggy but thanks to President Trump help is on the way

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  118. There’s lots of things I could say to you happyfeet, but I think this says it all.

    nk (9651fb)

  119. PandP @107… if it ain’t him, he’ll do until the real one minces by.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  120. Pin: Now, now.

I think you’re losing that sweet playfulness.

    Ben burn (b5f092)

  121. How about that, knish.

  126. Irma still headed west…..hasn’t turned north yet. They say it’s certain to hit Miami but maybe they’ll get a miracle.

    http://www.intellicast.com/Storm/Hurricane/CaribbeanSatellite.aspx?animate=true

But if it misses them, it has to go somewhere….and over water which feeds its power.

    harkin (90be6e)

  127. Miami will feel some of it but the westerly shift in the forecast means that the Keys and then southwest Florida are now the most likely areas to receive the full power of the storm. Miami and Fort Lauderdale may get only minimal hurricane force winds or even nothing more than tropical storm force winds. Of course this is roughly 36 hours out, so many things can change.

BTW, the area now most threatened is the area where Ropelight lives.

    kishnevi (a77570)

  128. Prayers for all.

    narciso (d1f714)

  129. The forecast
    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCDAT1+shtml/090259.shtml

The position forecast for 48 hours, meaning Sunday 11 PM Eastern is in Fort Myers.

    narciso (d1f714)

  133. cuba’s not on my radar

hah see what i did there

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  134. Paul Simon gave a million dollars to hurricane relief.

It’s cheaper than slapping Edie Brickell again.

Need to get him, Jackson Browne, Johnny Depp and Chris Brown together for a telethon.

    Pinandpuller (16b0b5)

  135. Edie started it

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  136. “With whAT. Harking, the Castro quake has already leveled much of the city?”

And some classic American automobiles that have survived since the 50s will meet their functional end.

But that doesn’t matter, not to me nor to the poor people there, most of whom had no choice over their fate or fortune.

    God protect them.

    harkin (90be6e)

  137. Still hugging the north coast of Cuba but now with more north to the vector…..

Kishnevi said the Keys and Gulf Coast……looking that way.

  140. Armando Iannucci feels like he dodged a bullet. The creator of HBO’s political satire “Veep” left the show after its fourth season, before anyone knew that Donald Trump would become president. Now, he’s not sure if he would know how to write jokes about a D.C. establishment that has become a real-life parody. “I’m kind of relieved, I really am,” the British writer-director told IndieWire in Toronto, where his new movie, “The Death of Stalin,” is premiering in the festival’s Platform section.

“What can you do and say that hasn’t already been said and done by him? Personally, I just find it difficult to be funny about him,” Iannucci said. “I can only be frustrated and flabbergasted by him. Outraged.”

there’s a lot to process there

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  141. speaking of MSAs Havana Cuba is the 4th largest metro area in the Caribbean

like Mr. harkin suggested it looks like Havana will be spared a direct confrontation with our friend Irma, as were the other 5 major metro areas

here’s an article what discusses the growing importance of oil and gas E&P in the region

lastly it looks like it’s that time of the season for to get reacquainted with the term “invest

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  142. Right now as per NWS Jose has higher sustained winds than Irma.

    Jose – 145 mph
    Irma -125 mph

    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

Than can change fast, especially as she leaves Cuba…..and Havana still in danger looks like.

    harkin (40514d)

  143. pout

your corrupt pig wife they can do without

  144. the saudi royal pigs are so disgusting i can’t even

i read this dispatch from Mr. Colonel Bay the other day about what it’s like to live next door to these sick barbaric pigs

Yemen has a population of 27 million people. 18 million need some type of assistance in order to survive.
