Trump Organization Exec Emailed Putin’s Spokesman for Help on a Deal

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:44 am

New reports raise further questions about Donald Trump’s businesses and Russia:

A top executive from Donald Trump’s real estate company emailed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s personal spokesman during the U.S. presidential campaign last year to ask for help advancing a stalled Trump Tower development project in Moscow, according to documents submitted to Congress on Monday.

The request came in a mid-January 2016 email from Michael Cohen, one of Trump’s closest business advisers, who asked longtime Putin lieutenant Dmitry Peskov for assistance in reviving a deal that Cohen suggested was languishing.

. . . .

Cohen’s email to Peskov provides an example of a Trump business official directly seeking Kremlin assistance in advancing Trump’s business interests.

The project appears to have gone nowhere. It does not look like evidence of “collusion” between Trump and Putin. It just causes any reasonable person to wonder whether the prospect of financial gain played or plays any part in Trump’s unrelenting praise for Vladimir Putin, a ruthless Soviet-style dictator who imprisons, tortures, and kills his political opponents.

I recently read Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man’s Fight for Justice. It’s a compelling read about the imprisonment, torture, and murder of Sergei Magnitsky, whose death led to the U.S. passage of the Magnitsky Act to retaliate against those involved. (That’s the same law that a Kremlin-connected lawyer talked to Manafort and Jr. about getting repealed. Repeal of the Magnitsky Act is one of Putin’s top priorities.) I’ll have a review when I get a chance. In the meantime, watch the first 20 minutes of this. (Keep watching if you’re hooked.)

This is what we’re dealing with in Putin. It’s no joke. The fact that we have a President who praises this man is a continual source of astonishment to me.

The fact that we have a President who praises this man is a continual source of astonishment to me.

Not when he’s your banker. Why bite the hand that’s been feeding him.

When the shell companies and financing are revealed we’ll learn that the TO obtained financing from the Ruskies and oligarchs linked to the Putty Cat after U.S. banks stopped loaning to Trump when he cratered in the early 90’s.

Trump’s lawyer, it seems, tried to point out to someone in Russia (Putin’s personal spokesman, Dmitry Peskov) in January, 2016, that Putin was supporting Trump for president, but not even that got things going.

Does everyone here know Sergei Magnitsky’s story? Am I the only one who didn’t know it?

I knew it approximately. He was a lawyer working for someone from whom the Russian government stole his company – he was getting some success in getting to the bottom of it, and was arrested and basically by the Russian government – Senator McCain was instrumental in imposing sanctions on Russia for that – targeting some individuals, Putin retaliated by abruptly stopping all American adoptions from Russia.

I bought the book, after first ordering the wrong book (which also had the title re Notice) I didn’t read much of it yet.

Maybe I gained a little more from the first minutes of the video which said he was one of seven lawyers – the only one who did not flee Russia – and that $200 million plus was really stolen from the Russian government, not the company. At first, Magnitsky thought Putin would be interested in that.

  192. calling the President of the United States “Dear Leader” like a North Korean communist thug is Fake News

It’s perfectly appropriate to refer to Trump that way given how some people view him. As a handy example, let me present Mr. Happyfeet. The Jacksonian presidency that Trump seems to admire has at its core the strong leader behind whom the people rally to achieve prosperity and strength. Jackson took it as far as the Republic would let him–not very far by our standards, but enough to make opponents call him “King Andrew”. It keeps showing up from time to time, as with both Roosevelts.

I’ve used the phrase to refer to Trump. But it also applies to the guy who occupied the Oval Office before him. I’m pretty sure if you were silly enough to search through my comments you’d find me using the phrase at leasst a couple of times in reference to Obama.

  193. A lot of Americans worship their leaders now. Trump’s set do bug me more. Not just because I’m on the right and supposedly his fans are on the right, but something else I can’t really put my finger on. Oh yeah, the antisemites.

I agree with most of that. But it’s not the antisemites (although being Jewish watching a bunch of guys marching around shouting “Jews will not replace us” has an immediacy of threat not present with the antifa thugs). It’s the fact that the right spent eight years jeering at those on the Left who hero-worshipped Obama–and now some of those same people are angry thatg Trump does not receive the same level of hero-worship.

  195. @203 – Oh sweetum-tootsies. Oooh!

on TRUMP the solid rock i stand all other ground is sinking sand
That’s one of the saddest things I’ve ever ever heard. There, you’ve gone and made me actually feel sorry for you. Unforgivable, really.

    Q! (267694)

  196. 146 Praise ye the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul.

2 While I live will I praise the Lord: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.

3 Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.

4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

5 Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God:

6 Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever:

7 Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The Lord looseth the prisoners:

8 The Lord openeth the eyes of the blind: the Lord raiseth them that are bowed down: the Lord loveth the righteous:

9 The Lord preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.

10 The Lord shall reign for ever, even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. Praise ye the Lord.

    Sammy is a bit touched.

Even if somehow RUSSIA INSTIGATED EVERY MAJOR TERRORIST ATTACK IN EUROPE (again, massive, MASSIVE Truther territory here,)

No, not every major terrrorist attack in Europe. Just maybe anything run out of Belguim, or with Chechens were involved in the chain of command or supplying guns..

the worst you could say about Russia is that they’re only about as reliable as Saudi Arabia when it comes to being war on terror allies.

Saudi Arabia does instigate terrrorist attacks too, but they always stop them before they happen – that’s one of the reasons they are perceived as an important ally. I’m talking about terrorist attacks outside of the Middle East. Russia lets them take place.

Also nobody ever claimed to be loyal to ‘the Arabian Peninsula’ rather than the crazy Yemeni gangstas on the tip and wikipedia also sez you’re wrong.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_State_of_Iraq_and_the_Levant

The Cahrlkie hebdo atttackers said they were acting on behalf of “al Qaeda in yemen” But al Qaeda in yemen called itself “al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula” Somebody actually being commanded by this organziation should have used the right name.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Qaeda_in_the_Arabian_Peninsula

The Charlie Hebdo attackers were working togetehr with someone who said he was loyal to ISIS. Now there are two problems with that. al Qaeda and ISIS were enemies by that time, and ISIS had renamed itself Islamic State. The name whose translation was abbreviated into ISIS or ISIL was used only for a few months in the spring of 2014, (or possibly going back to April, 2013) but the name stuck in the west.

Now when did the Charlie Hebdo and kosher grocery attacks take place?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Hebdo_shooting

That’s right, January, 2015. No person working for the real ISIS would have called it ISIS.
