CNN Is Having A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week… And It’s Only Tuesday

Filed under: General — Dana @ 10:41 am

[guest post by Dana]

CNN supervising producer John Bonifield is caught in an undercover video by James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas admitting there is a lack of proof regarding possible involvement between President Trump’s campaign and Russia:

“I mean, it’s mostly bullshit right now,” Bonifield says. “Like, we don’t have any giant proof.”

He confirms that the driving factor at CNN is ratings:

“It’s a business, people are like the media has an ethical phssssss…All the nice cutesy little ethics that used to get talked about in journalism school you’re just like, that’s adorable. That’s adorable. This is a business.”

According to the CNN Producer, business is booming. “Trump is good for business right now,” he concluded.

Bonifield further goes on to explain that the instructions come straight from the top, citing the CEO, Jeff Zucker:

“Just to give you some context, President Trump pulled out of the climate accords and for a day and a half we covered the climate accords. And the CEO of CNN (Jeff Zucker) said in our internal meeting, he said good job everybody covering the climate accords, but we’re done with that, let’s get back to Russia.”

Bonifield also acknowledged: “I haven’t seen any good enough evidence to show that the President committed a crime.” He continues:

“I just feel like they don’t really have it but they want to keep digging. And so I think the President is probably right to say, like, look you are witch hunting me. You have no smoking gun, you have no real proof.”

Also, yesterday it was reported that 3 CNN journalists resigned after being involved in a bit of messy report that ended with an apology and retraction of their story:

Three prominent journalists at CNN resigned on Monday after the cable news network was forced to retract and apologize for a story on its website involving a close ally of President Trump.

The article — linking Anthony Scaramucci, a hedge-fund manager and Trump confidant, to a Russian investment fund supposedly being investigated by the Senate — was removed from CNN.com late last week after the network decided it could not fully stand by its reporting.

The resignations are a black eye at a sensitive moment for the news organization, which has emerged as a regular target of Mr. Trump and his supporters. The president relishes dismissing the network’s coverage as “fake news,” and his closest advisers have accused the channel of harboring a bias against Mr. Trump.

CNN’s president, Jeffrey A. Zucker, has invested enormous resources into political and investigative coverage of the Trump White House, and he was deeply upset by last week’s reporting errors, according to two people briefed on the network’s discussions over the weekend who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Mr. Zucker helped lead an internal inquiry that found the story was published despite concerns expressed by CNN’s standards team, the people said. Thomas Frank, a veteran reporter who wrote the story; Lex Haris, executive editor of investigations; and Eric Lichtblau, an investigative editor and reporter hired from The New York Times in April, submitted resignations on Monday morning.

Also noted in the NYT, this comes on the heels of CNN firing Kathy Griffin for her tasteless photo of her holding a facsimile of Trump’s severed head, ties cut with CNN special host Reza Aslan after he tweeted some vulgar stuff toward President Trump, and being compelled to publish a correction on another story that “inaccurately predicted the congressional testimony of James B. Comey”. The report adds: “CNN’s investigative work has won plaudits this year, and the network had highlighted the hiring of marquee journalists as a sign of its commitment to reporting.”

Right- what a show, eh– and exactly what you’d expect a teevee producer to say; they’ve all been cashing in since that escalator ride down hill. And why? Because Americans don’t want to be governed, they wish to be entertained.

“I haven’t seen any good enough evidence to show that the President committed a crime.” He continues:“I just feel like they don’t really have it but they want to keep digging. Flynn’s intervention on behalf of Supervisory Special Agent Robyn Gritz was highly unusual, and included a letter in 2014 on his official Pentagon stationary, a public interview in 2015 supporting Gritz’s case and an offer to testify on her behalf. His offer put him as a hostile witness in a case against McCabe, who was soaring through the bureau’s leadership ranks.

The FBI sought to block Flynn’s support for the agent, asking a federal administrative law judge in May 2014 to keep Flynn and others from becoming a witness in her Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) case, memos obtained by Circa show. Two years later, the FBI opened its inquiry of Flynn.”

  22. I think CNN is being victimized by some of its sources – but they should also have had enough common sense, and familiarity with the all the details of the Russia story, to know that this almost certainly couldn’t be true.

The previous big lie to CNN was that Comey was going to claim in his testimony that he had NOT told Donald Trump three times that he was not under investigation. This went on up to the morning of his testimony.

But I think the story that the FBI was not going to charge Michael Flynn, that was leaked to CNN the day after Comey had that Feb 14 meeting with Donald Trump in which Donald trump talked to him about leaks and about letting the Mike Flynn case go, was a genuine leak.

And he hasn’t been charged with lying to the FBI in the four months since then (although you can say, four months is nthing with the FBI, they’ll keep a case open, and leave someone twisting, slowly, slowly in the wind longer than that.)

so if they had done fake news on Obama they would have gotten to keep their jobs?

    Interesting theory.

Deeper and derper into this fine article we learn this:

  34. “CNN Denies Any “Connection” Between Its Retracted False Report on a Probe into Trump Associate Anthony Scaramucci and Their Also-False Report that James Comey Would Deny Trump’s Claim That He Was Told Three Times He Wasn’t Under Investigation
    —Ace

Why deny a connection? Well, for one thing, CNN relies almost exclusively on leaks from anonymous sources now, so we have no way of knowing if the #FakeNews source for the retracted Scaramucci piece is also the same #FakeNews source for the wildly-wrong “Comey will refute Trump” #FakeNews.

And also, as Eric Wemple points out in the National Laughingstock:

In advance of former FBI Director James Comey’s Senate testimony, CNN used four bylines — Gloria Borger, Eric Lichtblau, Jake Tapper and Brian Rokus — to report that Comey would contradict Trump’s claims that the fired FBI chief had told him that he wasn’t a target of an investigation. Instead, the opposite turned out to be the case: Comey confirmed those claims of Trump. The story piled poor editorial judgment on top of faulty reporting, in that there was little merit in predicting Comey’s testimony a day or two before he gave it.
    John Sexton notes:

It’s worth noting that, despite CNN’s claim the current screwup was not connected to the prior one, Eric Lichtblau’s name appeared on both pieces.
Lichtbau was one of the three CNN personnel who “resigned” in the wake of the Scaramucci humiliation.

How bad is it? This bad: Even Redstate is slamming CNN for it.”

  40. That Hill reporter is 2 years out of college. What could possibly go wrong.

    Colonel Haiku (796ffc)

  41. You don’t condemn the whole organization because of a couple of rare mistakes.

You certainly condemn them when three different levels of editing (in CNN’s own correction) failed to subject the story to review “by several departments within CNN — including fact-checkers, journalism standards experts and lawyers — before publication.”

That’s not a mistake, that’s a willful abandonment of journalism, which the editors apparently thought was A-OK at the Fake News Network.

    harkin (6fe2b1)

  42. And they continue to dig deeper:

Unreliable Source Brian Stelter himself wrote the story on the firings and included this bit of weasel wisdom:

In a staff meeting Monday afternoon, investigative unit members were told that the retraction did not mean the facts of the story were necessarily wrong. Rather, it meant that “the story wasn’t solid enough to publish as-is,”

    https://amp.cnn.com/money/2017/06/26/media/cnn-announcement-retracted-article/index.html

Upon being called out on this Dan Rather bit of “false but accurate” hokum (and maybe thinking about his own job), he quickly followed with this tweet:

    Brian Stelter @brianstelter

To be clear, nothing in my story should be taken to imply that Scaramucci is under investigation. “

    harkin (6fe2b1)

  43. Shorter Stelter:

It’s not up to CNN to inform anyone which parts of the story are facts and which are nuggets pulled from our backsides, that’s all up to the people who still regard CNN as a reliable news source.

  44. I think my favorite new media rhetoric is how journalism has never been so divisive and contentious as it now is – the implication being that the Right has introduced a menacing tone to what used to be “pure.”

What is actually happening is that the sunlight now trained on the lying crapweasel (tm Malkin) media elites is causing those roaches to scatter. Being roaches, however, they can’t help but pushback with an urgency never before known. The beauty part in this is they thereby expose themselves to an easier extermination.

No. Stupidity isn’t menacing. Just stupid– and quite profitable as Rupert has demonstrated ‘menacing’ the media landscape in the UK for decades and later, the American media landscape as well. The Murdoch’s know their ‘Page Three’ audience and picture it accordingly: boobs.

“I watched your 6 o’clock news today; it’s straight tabloid. So, I don’t think I’ll listen to any protestations of high standards of journalism when you’re right down on the streets soliciting audiences like the rest of us. When somebody is being targeted by leakers, who may aware of a person’s prejudices, it may not be so easy not to be fooled. There’s probably a whole big backstory to that. It wasn’t just one simple lie. I also said:

but they should also have had enough common sense, and familiarity with the all the details of the Russia story, to know that this almost certainly couldn’t be true.

  60. In other news, it turns out that reducing reported carbon dioxide emission does not reduce the amount of carbon dioxde in the atmosphere:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/26/climate/carbon-in-atmosphere-is-rising-even-as-emissions-stabilize.html

For more than two years, the monitoring station here, along with its counterparts across the world, has been flashing a warning: The excess carbon dioxide scorching the planet rose at the highest rate on record in 2015 and 2016. A slightly slower but still unusual rate of increase has continued into 2017.

Scientists are concerned about the cause of the rapid rises because, in one of the most hopeful signs since the global climate crisis became widely understood in the 1980s, the amount of carbon dioxide that people are pumping into the air seems to have stabilized in recent years, at least judging from the data that countries compile on their own emissions.

That raises a conundrum: If the amount of the gas that people are putting out has stopped rising, how can the amount that stays in the air be going up faster than ever? Does it mean the natural sponges that have been absorbing carbon dioxide are now changing?

Maybe there’s something going on they don’t understand? And of course, somebody could be lying, oromittin things from thhge estimates.

But clearly the Paris accords are nonsense.

    Sammy Finkelman (6f9f42)

  61. 60. No, it’s true. It may be easier to victimize CNN than some other places, but they are being victimized.

  63. Get real, Sammy. Please. CNN chose to be the house organ of the Democrats. You know what a house organ is, don’t you? It’s a legitimate term, although archaic, for the in-house newspaper or news-letter of a business or organization. A house organ is not “victimized” when it prints things Management tells it. That is its role. To promote the Bosses’ line.

(A totally different animal from journalism with a political bias, and even there you cannot say they are “victimized”. They choose to victimize their journalistic objectivity by “believing” questionable sources merely because they mesh with their editorial posture. But CNN is beneath even that level.)

And CNN did not have to descend very far to its present-day hackery. It started out as a leftist propaganda tabloid masquerading as a news organization. Word for word, story for story, you get more honest reporting from the National Enquirer, and you know what that’s worth.

clueless CNN fake news propaganda sluts are clueless

  73. Never mind, I know. What difference at that point did it make?

  74. Going back to your riff on noir era la after a generation albeit in little known films like gangster squad and that TNT series with Alexa davalos, there is sort of balanced perspective of William Parker, not back to the dragnet era

    narciso (d1f714)

  75. Mob city, Neal Mcdonough played William Parker,

    narciso (d1f714)

  76. I haven’t seen it, but I know about Parker. I think. He was considered a reformer at the time, although it was O.W Wilson they taught us in my Criminal Justice classes in Chicago. His predecessor had goon squads going around roughing up undesirables. There was a movie (I liked it) about it with Nick Nolte, Mulholland Falls.

  77. Yrs that was an odd one, part of the issue of redbaiting. Ellroy who has been adapted often poorly fed into this narrative the best was probably la confidential,

  81. Yes but Bezos or Carlos slims isn’t any better,,they’ve been paddling out the same anonymous slop, for instance they didn’t point out Ukraine could find no record of payouts to manafort, they go squirrel instead?

An insight into how mentally ill the Left is.

    “Moral high ground” …. wow.

    Blah (44eaa0)

  83. To help understand their mincing fury, simply recall the need of the Left and many #NeverTrumpinistas to feel heroic and have others view them as morally superior.

    Colonel Haiku (607a84)

  84. CNN made a mistake, corrected the error by holding staff accountable and terminating reporters.

Meanwhile the Showman In Chief and Top Purveyor of Fake News has yet to fess up and be held accountable:

Get real, Sammy. Please. CNN chose to be the house organ of the Democrats. You know what a house organ is, don’t you? It’s a legitimate term, although archaic, for the in-house newspaper or news-letter of a business or organization. A house organ is not “victimized” when it prints things Management tells it. That is its role. To promote the Bosses’ line.

That would like Al Jazeera with regards to Qatar. I don’t think that’s it. If so, everybody would know it, and nobody would have been fired, or forced to resign. (Although maybe taht was because of a possible libel suit and maybe taht was coondition of not pursuing it.)

CNN has been embarassed. It has to be that they believe their “scoops” That means they are victimized The true villain is whoever is feeding them those bad stories.

Correction: The one with Comey’s tetsimony was actually retracted not on the morning of is testimony but when his prepared testimony was released.

I found what seems to be a CNN story that doesn’t seem to fit with the Trump-was-bribed-is-making-money=fro-Russia theme but talks, instead, about his campaign being infiltrated. I don’t think the Democrats ordered that one.

It’s about Carter Page and is too strong about him, but that’s not consistent with collusion.

  87. “CNN made a mistake, corrected the error by holding staff accountable and terminating reporters.”

BS… they were facing a $100M lawsuit at a very inopportune time.
