BREAKING NEWS: House Majority Whip Shot by Gunman Who Opened Fire at GOP Baseball Practice

Filed under: Uncategorized — Patterico @ 4:16 am

Awful.

Here is a Fox News report:

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in the hip and at least one other aide was also hit in the chest by a gunman with a rifle who opened fire at a baseball practice in Virginia Wednesday morning, Fox News confirmed.

Police tweeted they “believed” the gunman was in custody. Sen. Mike Lee told Fox News, however, the gunman was dead. He said a staffer used a belt as a tourniquet to stop Scalise’s bleeding.

As with any breaking news story, be very, very careful about jumping to conclusions.

UPDATE: Steve Scalise on a stretcher:

UPDATE: Just before the shooting, a guy walked up to Jeff Duncan and Ron DeSantis and asked if it was Democrats or Republicans who were practicing.

UPDATE: Latest reports are that the shooter is in custody (presumably meaning not dead) and that the injuries to the victims are not life-threatening.

  1. Thank the Lord the shooter wasn’t a better shot, firing from behind the 3B dugout with a rifle should have been lethal; this could have been far worse than it turned out. I heard a report a few minutes ago, not sure how accurate it is because most of these are wrong in the early moments of reporting, but the man who asked if the players were Republicans or Democrats was the shooter. So, if accurate, that certainly clarifies part of his motive.

Prayers to everyone involved, especially the security detail that were shot trying to get to the Congressman.

  2. The presence of Scalise’s Capitol Police security detail is big part of why this shooting wasn’t worse.

  3. The left on Twitter are as ghoulish as expected, but the real evil today seems to be those pushing the line that killing GOP Congressmen is a form of self defense because of the healthcare vote. Seriously evil thinking.

  4. Yes, Sean, we are seeing the concept of political disputes justifying violence entering the mainstream.

  5. Patterico – I want to thank you for your tolerance in the main forum.

For providing a counter argument to the left’s attempts at controlling the narrative today I have been banned on numerous forums, and these are supposedly mainstream non-political sites on their Off-topic page.

They really are doing everything they can to minimize the PR damage for their recent toxic rhetoric.

  6. While I’m arguing with you on the main forum, Harkin, I will chime in and second the sentiment you expressed in #5. It disappoints me that you have been banned on numerous forums (they get to control who posts in their living room, absolutely, AND I can wish that they would choose differently), and I am glad that Patterico’s place exists as a space in which we can express our differences.

  8. Where do you see that the shooter is in custody? At the report that you linked to with the words “in custody”, the second paragraph is, “Officers returned fire at the suspect, who has since died, authorities said.” I assume the linked story has been updated since you wrote that, so I guess you’ll need to update your post to reflect that new information.

  9. I think Patterico was too busy working to add another update the post during the day, as the story developed, but the fact of the shooter’s death is widely known.
