Flacks on Comey Firing: Nothing to See Here, Folks! Trump: Hold My Beer

Filed under: Uncategorized — Patterico @ 6:19 am

Trump sends out flacks to say the firing of Comey had nothing to do with the Russia investigation, and was based on a recommendation from a career DoJ guy.

Deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tells TODAY that President Trump’s firing of FBI chief James Comey “has nothing to do with any investigation into Russia.”

Trump then goes out and says he was going to fire Comey regardless of the recommendation and was thinking about the Russia-Trump investigation when he made the decision:

But regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Comey. Knowing there was no good time to do it.

And in fact, when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said, you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story. It’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election.

The full interview is there. Watch alllll the context you like.

You know who else says the firing had nothing to do with Russia?

  2. Or, in this case, makes others lie for him.

  3. It just kinda blows my mind how angry Trump’s fans are in the wrong direction.

A lot of the same guys who bought into every conspiracy theory they heard, from Cruz’s dad being on the grassy knoll to Trump’s birther claims. But now, Trump talking about the Russia investigation while firing the guy, the contradicting timelines and explanations, the subpoenas to Flynn, the warrants on Mannafort, and with all that smoke they are absolutely furious with folks who are suspicious. We have decades of Trump being an unethical person to consider. The administration admits firing Comey should more quickly conclude a criminal investigation. All that, and the bad guys are the ‘nevertrumpers’ criticizing this behavior, and this sloppy messaging that only pours fuel on the fire.

  4. For all the demands from Trump’s supporters that we ignore procedural competence and focus on substantive outcomes, Trump has accomplished exceedingly little of in the way of substantive outcomes over the first 3.5 months of his presidency – even from a delegation perspective, given how few cabinet level appointments have been finalized.

Gorsuch is a Justice. That’s it, and that’s a congressional accomplishment, not a presidential accomplishment. In terms of substantive political realities, we’re basically still living under the Obama administration.
