White Woman Presumes To Speak For Native Americans

Filed under: General — Dana @ 10:35 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Last week, editor-in-chief of Mother Jones Clara Jeffery decided if Pence wouldn’t eat dinner alone with women other than his wife, it meant he wouldn’t hire women for top jobs in the administration. A few days ago, Jeffery made another ridiculous assumption. This time regarding Native Americans:

Untitled

Gee, Clara, it’s mighty white of you to tell Indians what we think and feel, and that our place is at the table of perpetual victim. Because where else would it be, right??

Here, put this in your pipe and smoke it:

The tomahawk was created by Algonquian Indians and widely used by Native Americans and European colonialists alike. The iconic “pipe tomahawk” design of the colonial era was made using metal heads provided to tribes as gifts and goods from the British Navy.

Naming weapons and vehicles after Native American tribes and icons are a common practice in the U.S. military, including the Apache, Black Hawk, Iroquois, and Chinook helicopters and the Seminole and Mohawk airplanes.

  3. I love that it’s the army that uses so many of these native american expressions. I’m not sure how authentic it is, but we have the notion that these natives had strong warrior ethics, and we are trying to honor that.

The Oneida kinda got screwed in comparison.

Yeah, this bit from the PI (Perpetually Indignant) playbook is so laughably stupid the only sadness is that anyone takes it seriously.

Football teams are not named by “derogatory” terms (with an exception or two which I will name). The Washington Redskins, the Florida State Seminoles, the Cleveland Indians, the Atlanta Braves, these teams are not named in derogation — the names are meant to inspire fear, to represent a respected and fierce foe to be taken lightly at your peril.

This is pretty obvious when you examine other sports mascots — Tigers, Bears, Bulldogs — all fierce creatures to be wary of. Even the “less threatening” ones — the Temple Owls, the Minnesota Golden Gophers — represent creatures worthy of respect and recognition for qualities outside of combat — Owls for wisdom as well as hunters, Gophers for being industrious and efficient.

There are a couple exceptions, 60s-era namings by student bodies using groupthink to deride collegiate sports of all kinds — the Akron Zips and the Banana Slugs.

But they are the exception, not the rule. No one ever named their team the “Nashville Ni***rs” for a reason.

Q.E.D. — the terms above — Redskin, Indian, Brave — are all terms of RESPECT for those cultures.

Feature this. They have little plots of land sprinkled all over California, what’s to stop them from building an oil refinery instead of a casino, the first new one(s?) in the country for 50 years?

Jobs baby, and a Wiyot thumb in Jerry’s eye.

  14. My hometown is WAUWATOSA WISCONSIN, also Scott Walkers, and Steven Hayes hometown. Wauwatosa means FIRE FLY in the native tongue of our area in Milwaukee. Is it RACIST to merely show homage and to use a native word? In H.S.athletics, I was a Wauwatosa (TOSA) EAST RED RAIDER. And I was proud of the heritage we honoured. In College I played 2 varsity sports, and I was a UNIVERSITY of WISCONSIN=WHITEWATER WARHAWK. Either I was honouring the NATIVE INDIAN LEGACY and HERITAGE or I was MOCKING IT. I AM PROUD TO HAVE HONOURED WISCONSINS LOCAL INDIAN HISTORY and HERITAGE.

Is PAT-O-RICO, insensitive, rude, wrong or RACIST to our FALN TERRITORY???? Or Clinton and Rodhams’ Friends???
What if a CATHOLIC PRIEST UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT in MILWAUKEE had the POWER as a LIB EDUCATOR, to DECIDE what is offensive based on ONE SQUEAKY WHEEL??? Or perhaps ZERO squeaky wheels, and one NE-ER DO-WELL who recognizes how to play the LIBERAL idiots.

  18. A more BRIEF reply as to MS CLARA JEFFERY. SIDWELL FRIENDS is not REALITY Ms JEFFERY. Also, I am very very sorry, your MARRIAGE and SOUL MATE experiment DID NOT WORK OUT.
Your diatribes on LINE about your HUSBAND, whom YOU CHOSE, UNLIKE YOUR GOVERNMENT CONNECTED and MULTIPLE PENSIONED PARENTS, was a love connection and a RESPONSIBILTY, that was TOSSED ASIDE, by you and your SIDWELL SENSABILITIES, when it became laborious, and when it wasn’t easy like SUNDAY MORNING.
Mz Jeffery, you are TRAPPED. Your life is TRAPPED, in a spiral of ZERO FULFILLMENT. So SORRY Mizz Jeffery, BUT, your husband decided that PRESIDENT TRUMP, was a man of ACCOMPLISHMENT and ACHIEVEMENT.
I know, I know, Hillary Rotten Rodhams’ ENTIRE CAREER was based on SERVICE TO “TEH CHILDREN” (sic intended) Mizz Rodham is a pillar of WORKS and CHARACTER, and INTEGRITY, and Years and Years of ACCOMPLISHMENTS for TEH CHILDREN an of COURSE TEH WYMYN. Hillary Rotten Rodham, has been a LIFE LONG FAILURE and DISGRACE. From her EARLIEST DAYS as a NEW LAWYER and JR counsel for the WATERGATE INVESTIGATION, HILLARY ROTTEN RODHAM, has been an evil duplicitous, self serving, lying HACK,
And Hillary Rotten was FIRED from the WATERGATE INVESTIGATION for being dishonest and for LACKING CHARACTER. MIZZ JEFFERY, How did ROTTEN RODHAM behave and respond when she DISCOVERED that her HUSBAND was “diddling” “banging”, having a decade long affair of “Infidelity and intercourse” with women NOT his WIFE?
Let me help you with question Mizz Jeffery. Your HERO, a woman of ZERO ACCOMPLISHMENTS in LIFE, yet many many $$$$$ TIES and CONNECTIONS via HER CHEATING HUSBAND……,,,,,, PAID PRIVATE INVESTIGATORS to SCARE, THREATEN DEMEAN, and DESTROY the lives careers and reputations of WOMEN whom Billy the RAPIST either sexaully assaulted or whom he tried to “SCORE” with. Mizz Jeffery, I’m SURE, that YOU as an HONOURABLE WOMYN, and as a SIDWELL GRAD, I’m VERY SURE, that you find UNWANTED SEXUAL advances and behaviors from POWERFUL MEN………WRONGFUL…and…..DISGUSTING.
NO YOU DON’T. You Missy Mizz Jeffery, are a somewhat VALUELESS, nearly Sociopathic, LIBERAL AUTOMATON. Just like dear old MOM and DAD.

Zippy is the female mascot of the University of Akron athletics team. Zippy is a kangaroo, and was chosen by a committee in 1953. The school’s nickname, “Zips”, is a shortening of “Zippers”, a pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company of Akron.

    Dumb name, but not derogatory.

The Banana Slugs were named *in the 1980s*, not in the 1960s. And virtually nobody who attended that institution thinks it’s a derisive mascot; it’s an *accurate* mascot in that banana slugs are native to the forests in the upper campus.

  36. Greetings:

I think that there’s an underlying assumption about Amerindian martial technology. When the white eyes first started showing up, it was kind of even-steven or a bit better for the locals than the new arrivals. Bows and arrows seem to reload a lot quicker than military-style assault muskets even though the Pilgrims did some good work. In fact, if you read T.R. Fehrenbach’s “Comanches: The History of a People” (now progressively re-titled “Comanches: The Destruction of a People”) it wasn’t until Samuel Colt made all men, and probably some women, equal that things started going the Texicans’ way.

I watched a subtitled Korean move entitled “The Yellow Sea” a couple of weeks back that in spite of being about modern day gang warfare on the peninsula had the best knife and hatchet work I’ve seen since “The Last of the Mohicans”.

Would it help if the whites called them “Tommyhawks” ???

  38. Dehydration is a major problem for the mollusk; to combat this, banana slugs excrete a thick coating of mucus around their bodies and can also aestivate. To do so, they secrete a protective layer of mucus and insulate themselves with a layer of soil and leaves. They remain inactive in this state until the environment becomes moist again.

The slime also contains pheromones to attract other slugs for mating. Slugs are simultaneous hermaphrodites, and reproduce by exchanging sperm with their mate. They produce up to 75 translucent eggs, which are laid in a log or on leaves. Slugs mate and lay eggs throughout the year. The adults provide no further care for their eggs beyond finding a suitable hiding spot, and the eggs are abandoned as soon as the clutch is laid.

All sorts of room for snark. U.C. Santa Cruz Banana Slugs probably develop a thicker skin.

The larger, upper pair, termed “eyestalks,” are used to detect light or movement. The second, lower pair are used to detect chemicals. The tentacles can retract and extend themselves to avoid damage. If a predator bites off a tentacle, the slug can grow a new one.

    From the Wiki.

Growing a new eyeball is a good trick.

You had best bow your heads when you drive by the exit for Basilone Road at Camp Pendleton.

…When Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone voluntarily returned to the Pacific war it would be on the sands of Iwo Jima 19, February, 1945. At the head of another machine gun squad, he would drive hundreds of frightened raw troops off the beaches toward their assigned objectives. Iwo would be his toughest fight. Barely on the island two hours, he was killed leading his men.

Gunnery Sergeant Manila John Basilone was the only Marine in WWII to receive both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross.

  63. @62, MacArthur dropped the ball. True. True. I don’t know of anyone coming up with a credible reason for why the USAAF on Luzon was destroyed on the ground hours after they had heard of Pearl.

As far as caring goes, everybody did. Nimitz wanted to bypass the Philipines and go straight to Taiwan. Strategically I think that made better sense. But MacArthur made the case that we couldn’t bypass the Filipinos. Nimitz agreed.

We had to return. God love the Pinoys.

    Attention to citation:

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Narcisco Ortilano (6611329), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company M, 57th Infantry Regiment, Philippine Scouts, in action against enemy forces at Barrie Mabatang, Abucay, Bataan, Philippine Islands, on 11 January 1942. In an attempted penetration by hostile forces which involved a flank attack on the position occupied by his company, hand-to-hand fighting soon developed. When eleven enemy soldiers attacked the machine gun nest manned by Private First Class Ortilano, he shot four of them before a stoppage put his machine gun out of action, whereupon he relied on his pistol, killing five more of the enemy with the sidearm when it, too, jammed. Weaponless, and confronted by the two remaining enemy advancing toward him with fixed bayonets, this intrepid soldier seized the rifle of the first enemy soldier as he made a thrust which cost Private First Class Ortilano the loss of his thumb. During the brief struggle, he was wounded in the back by the remaining hostile soldier, whom he killed with the bayonet which he had wrested from the first. Turning, he fired upon and killed the first of the two enemy who, by this time, was fleeing. In spite of his serious wound, Private First Class Ortilano returned to his gun position where he was subsequently found. 64. Kind of annoying that they don’t tell you where is Borussia Dortmund.

Never heard of it before in my life, and it’s not like I was actively avoiding the knowledge. That’s an article written for Americans. They should present the basic info before they launch into their anti islamist screed.
German soccer team management is flaky; their players young and obedient. It’s only too possible they’d drive a busload of targets into a Muslim majority enclave.
    SO I RESORT TO BING.

Bing says; Borussia Dortmund is a German sports club based in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia.

At which point I don’t care any more. [Edit] THEM> [Edit] and the horse they rode in on.

  66. It’s not just overseas stories where the news scribblers drop the ball.

How many times have I opened a story “Man attacked in broad daylight assailant yelled Alu Akabar”,

only to see, “A man was attacked in Oakvale today during the rushhour commute”.
No mention of a State, County or nearby City , someone outside of podunkville might have heard of.

the note said “As of now, all the disbelieving actors, singers, sportsmen and all prominent figures in Germany and other Crusader nations are on the death list of the Islamic State.”

That’s interesting. Germany hasn’t been a Crusader nation since what? The 1600’s. There wasn’t even an organized such a thing as Germany back then, just a collection of gangs from different city states that sometimes stopped fighting amonst themselves long enough to push around others.

one lunatic with a pipe bomb > you think Merkel will surrender Rammstein Airbase?

  73. I was remiss. How could I ignore the Rhine crossing, March 1945.

    https://www.usni.org/magazines/navalhistory/2015-04/landing-troops-across-rhine

…These craft were 36-foot LCVPs (landing craft, vehicle, personnel) or 50-foot LCMs (landing craft, mechanized)—boats that had brought U.S. troops ashore at Normandy. Now, far from the ocean or English Channel, they were on their way to the Rhine River, the physical and symbolic barrier to the German heartland—broad, swift, and hemmed in by high bluffs for much of its rush from alpine headwaters to the North Sea…

Now boys and girls who wants to hear about the Navy Spitfires at Normandy.
