  1. I wish someone would update that graphic with government spending and income bars, GDP, and maybe extend it back in time a few presidents. Inflation adjustments optional.

  2. I’ve been carrying this thing around on my phone since the first time I saw it. I believe it was in the Wall Street Journal. Whenever I get into a discussion with somebody and they start talking about all the great things Obama is doing, I show them this graph. Yeah, all these programs are great, but they cost money. Money we don’t have. It’s pretty damn easy to make everybody happy with a bunch of social programs and government intervention if you all but ignore the cost.

What is really scary about this graph is that once all the spending to theoretically deal with the economic crisis is absorbed, through about 2014, you would expect things to move to a surplus. But NOOOOOO! Year by year, it then starts and continues to get worse. That’s the aftermath of all the programs being put in place today. And we all know that since this is government, it will be even worse than this graph shows – unless we get some legislators in DC that have a spine and can stop the insanity.

This graph is the gigantic elephant in the middle of the room that almost everybody continues to ignore. It shows a complete lack of responsibility to even think this is even remotely OK.

  3. One thing to remember:
The FY-02 Budget was passed by a GOP Congress, with a GOP President, before 9/11, and is the first budget of the GWB Presidency.
The last budget to be passed by a GOP President with a GOP Congress is FY-07. Notice how the deficits were decreasing after the initial hit for 9/11 and the Afghan/Iraq Wars in the ’03 & ’04 FY’s, until you come to FY-08, and the first Reid/Pelosi Budget. Plus, the FY-09 Budget, except for military spending, was not set until after BHO assumed office on 1/20/09 (remember the Omnibus Spending Bill?).
Many said that you shouldn’t be too upset with the profligate spending of the GOP under Bush, for it would be worse if the Dem’s were in power, and everyone laughed – except, they were right, and it is exponentially worse, as the graph above demonstrates.

True, but it was the promiscuous spending during the Bush years that gave the Democrats the opening to make that argument in the first place.
