Daschle withdraws…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Scott Jacobs @ 9:54 am

I’m trying to find a link to back this up besides a couple of news feeds I follow on Twitter, but it seems that Tommy-Boy has withdrawn from the nomination for HHS…

Edit: Finally got it from Fox News (Though I know the LAT has the story as well – in a few hours I’ll check the Times to compare)

  1. Yeah, it hit the radio news while I was on my drive home. It will be interesting to hear what scuttle-butt is being passed around the Washington media as to the exact reason why. My guess (and hope) would be that the GOP was going to unanimously oppose him and that he would probably lose a few Dems, so the best possible outcome Obama could hope for would be that he would be confirmed with 52 or 53 votes. To borrow from Hunter S. Thompson, it was turning into one of those scenarios where losing would be bad but winning would be downright intolerable.

  2. By the way, without checking first, I am guessing the LA Times story will be something like this:

Faced with angry Republican opposition, former Senator Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination as Secretary of HSS earlier this afternoon. The GOP had relentlessly accused Daschle, a former majority leader, of failing to pay certain taxes he is said to have owed since leaving his long career of public service four years ago. A source inside of the Obama administration noted that Republicans had proven to be unusually fixated on relatively minor tax issues, despite Obama’s overwhelming victory this past November. “They weren’t able to block [Treasury Secretary nominee Timothy] Geither,” said the source, “so they instead attacked a decent, hard-working. . .”

  3. Geithner’s tax behavior was worse than Daschle’s.

  4. Obama promised to get rid of Washington insiders from government

hey, wow, without even spending a whole lot of money either

You want to get rid of the rest of the K street lobbyiests – send em all a chain letter from Obama informing them of their nomination to the Secretary of Tax deficency
