A Better Bailout?

If we really have to bail out the US auto industry, why is it that we are giving money to the losers?  Why not give money to the winners and let them sort it out?

Take the $25 billion (or $15 billion or whatever) and loan or give it to Ford, no strings attached.  Let Chrysler and GM go Chapter 11.  Presumably, Ford would buy what they’ll need to grow their business and leave the deadwood to fail.  Since they seem to know how to make at least some cars that people want and which compete with the best Japan has to offer, maybe it should be Ford and not some Car Czar deciding what to save.

And certainly not GM or Chrysler.

  1. I like the idea! I have a 2000 Ford F-150, V-6, standard transmission, with 181,000+ miles on it and no major problems at all. I’ve replaced the normal wear parts — tires, hoses, belts and the like — and that’s about it.

As I’ve told some friends before: Chevy makes pick-ups, but Ford builds trucks.

  2. A better idea?…

Kevin Murphy of Patteriso’c “Jury” had an interesting, short post, that introduces an idea which I think has merit:

  3. Chrysler can be bailed out by Cerebus. If a single dime goes to them, I’m burning something.

  5. IIRC, Harley got a state bailout a while back.

  6. I wouldn’t pay HD a damn thing. Their Customer Service remains crap to this day, and thier show rooms act like they are doing you a favor by letting you walk in.

Their quality is pretty hit or miss as well.

  7. Are Harleys still made in York, Pa.? So Rendell is fine with bailing out them and a Department store? I think the store received HUD funds.

The Jap bikes are the thing for suicide here in S. Fla. Cops won’t chase them on I-95 when they are doing upwards of 180 mph. I doubt the Hogs are capable of 200 mph. Great that so many riders enjoy freedom of no helmets. Saves the rest of us money when they don’t require hospitalization.

Of course you don’t need a bike to be an idiot. Right down the street a dude thought he could beat the train through a crossing. His young daughter died and naturally he didn’t see or hear the train. Another bright bulb (lawyer) was stopped taking his daughter to school after speeding in his corvette at 125 on Military Trail.

But the Ford pickup owners seem to have the highest IQs, especially the owners of white ones. Too much personal anecdotal evidence that they are assclowns here.

  8. Give Subaru a hundred million to develop a line of diesel serial electric, plugable, AWD autos and a small AWD pickup (box at least 4’4″x8’8″.)

My options, while many and varied, is best not discussed…

In other words, I chose not to answer on the grounds that the answer may be used to incriminate me…
