The Jury Talks Back

Oklahoma in, Texas out

Filed under: Uncategorized — aunursa @ 3:14 pm

The college football BCS Standings have just been released, and Oklahoma (11-1) is ranked ahead of Texas (11-1) – in spite of the fact that the Longhorns defeated the Sooners 45-35 in the Red River Shootout.  Consequently Oklahoma will play Missouri for the Big 12 Conference title next week.  If Oklahoma wins, the Sooners will likely receive a berth in the BCS Championship Game, and Texas would have to settle for the Fiesta Bowl.

Don’t feel too bad for Texas getting snubbed in the BCS standings.  If you don’t know the history of the BCS, this Wall Street Journal article (written before this weekend’s games) explains why many feel that the Longhorns are finally getting what they deserve.

  1. Ouch. Insult to injury.

  2. It’s even worse that Mac tried to do more lobbying at the half of the OU-OSU game last night while Stoops had the good sense to play it cool. But the Cal people need to get over it. They didn’t deserve that Rose Bowl bid as much as Texas and their performance at the Holiday Bowl against the Red Raiders proved it.

  3. “in spite of the fact that the Longhorns defeated the Sooners 45-35 in the Red River Shootout.”

You realize that Texas Tech (using the same argument) would be ahead of Texas right? :)

In a 3-way tie, it is useless to use a head-to-head argument (unless 1 team beat the other 2, then there’s no tie)

That’s precisely the argument that Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops used to explain why his Sooners should be ranked ahead of Texas.

  5. What, that because the beat TTech, and TTech beat the Longhorns, the Sooners should be ahead?

God I hate Stoops… I hate him more than I hate Holtz, and that’s alot.

  6. I loved Mike Leach’s (coach of Tech) suggestion: take the team with the best graduation rate among scholarship football players. Tech is something like 70+%, UT is closer to 50%, and OU is down under 40%. That is a very subtle F-you to both UT and OU from Leach, and I think he is right.

  7. I know aun, but it’s a logical argument. It is the perfect counter to Texas head-to-head argument.

They should have simply tossed coins, odd man out then head up to see who wins :)

  8. I’m a Texas fan and I don’t have a problem with this. Texas lost a big game when it mattered and this is what happens when you lose at crunch time. Hopefully this will motivate the players far more in the future than any pep talk from Mac. I’ll admit I’d much rather have seen Tech win out, not only because I prefer Texas teams but also because I like Mike Leach and Tech’s offenses through the years.

Finally, whatever system is in place, the teams knew the rules beforehand. The BCS formula means teams like Texas are scheduling more difficult games in the non-conference slots, something I think is good for football as a whole. Anyway, if you want to be a college football fan, it’s great to want to win it all every year but you better be able to accept defeat more often than not. There’s too many good programs, coaches and players to be #1 every year.
