Happy Independence Day

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 2:06 pm

I hope everyone enjoys the day. 245 years. If Trump is not re-elected, we might make it to 250.

Enjoy this tribute to grilling in celebration of the day. There are actually some useful tips in there.

  1. Not Trump, sure, but there are other “nots” too. AOC would be just as wild a ride.

  3. July 4th is an artificial construct.
The Declaration was actually approved by the Continental Congress on July 2nd. The 4th was just the publication date (out of 200 copies printed, only 26 have survived). However, only 12 of the 13 colonies voted approval on the 2nd; New York abstained until July 10th. The document itself wasn’t signed by all the colonies until August 11th. This obviously means that we should lighting fireworks from 7/2 through 8/11.
Happy Independence Day, whichever day you choose it to be.

  4. We had fireworks at Mount Rushmore for decades. Then Obama banned the act of celebration citing “environmental concerns.” Trump restored the process of celebrating our independence. Biden has resorted to banning the practice again.

Biden might make it to 80.

    And we survived Reagan.

I told my British friends bangers & mash w/a little Heinz baked beans on Guy Fawkes Day was a poor substitute for July 4 hot dogs & fries but it did produce little explosions all their own — and you could light them.

  9. Declaration of Independence Copy Lost in Attic For 177 Years Sold For $4.4 Million

A copy of the Declaration of Independence that was lost for 177 years has been sold at auction for $4.4 million.

The rare document was gifted to the last surviving Founding Father, Charles Carroll, in 1820 and had been unaccounted for nearly two centuries when it was rediscovered in an attic of a “Scottish ancestral home” earlier this year.

It finally made its return to the U.S. and was sold at Freeman’s in Philadelphia, the home of the original declaration, for a staggering $4,420,000 on July 1.

The document is believed to have traveled across the Atlantic when Carroll presented one of his copies to his grandson-in-law John MacTavish and his wife, Emil Caton.

It is the last of six copies that still remain in private hands.

According to Freeman’s: “This copy presumably passed by descent to Caton and MacTavish. He also copied Carroll’s original 1826 inscription to him, and later signed and also documented the fate of that copy.”

So, I’m reading the 4th book in S M Stirling’s alt history about Teddy R’s America. There’s this post-Great War alliance he heads called “Oceaniana.”

  13. I’m reading a Richard Deming Dragnet novel, from when Joe Friday’s partner was Frank Smith not Bill Gannon. Also around the time I was born. WMA, for “White, Male, American”, was an over-the-radio LAPD description.

  14. @13.You should catch the Dragnet TV series from the 50’s- pre-‘Gannon.’ The the radio program of te same era was actually good, too.

Blacks got three this year: Juneteenth; MLK Day and now lay claim to July 4– if you watched any CNN. A few token whites; but Lemon’s pimping zoot suit was a fireworks display all its own.

I have. The 1954 movie, too.

    nk (1d9030)

  17. Yeah, they’re actually good. The 60s TV show was a little too forced for the times; didn’t do the radio or earlier series– and yes, the movie [which was good and fit the era well, too] justice.

  18. It was before Mapp, Miranda, Escobedo, and Terry. True, Jack Webb was a “buff” and he wanted to paint the LAPD as professional and disciplined as much as possible, but it is also true that in all four of those decisions the Supreme Court was a follower and not a leader, basing its decisions in large part on FBI and local police practices already in place across the country.

    nk (1d9030)

  19. But on this Fourth of July thread all I had meant to point out was the “White, Male, American“.

Depends on which note card Biden picks out of his stack.
By this time next year, Biden’s brain will have deteriorated further and our geopolitical enemies will make their moves so they can consolidate them before our election two years on.

By the end of the first month he’s given up lunch, his jacket, shoes and the pay off amount goes up a couple times a week as they guage how much money the kid can get his hands on

The DNC prefers buttageig and fear AOC would defeat harris in the 2024 primaries.

It sounds unlikely that anyone would even think that. Just because AOC might then be old enough to run for president doesn’t mean she would. Now it could be argued that practically anyone would defeat Kamala Harris in a primary – if there is one.
