RIP MeToo: Bill Clinton to Speak at Democrat Convention Tonight

Filed under: General — JVW @ 3:15 pm

[guest post by JVW]

Putting the final nail in the coffin of the relatively short-lived but consequential MeToo movement, tonight’s slate of speakers for the Democrat National Convention will include a prime time slot for former President William J. Clinton, he of the Monica Lewinsky dalliance, the sexual harassment of Paula Jones, the unwanted groping of Kathleen Willey, and the believable rape of Juanita Broaddrick. In anticipation of the event, right-wing Twitter is reminding everyone that Bubba was a frequent guest aboard the late* Jeffrey Epstein’s notorious jet, the Lolita Express:

This, along with the soon-to-be-nominated-and-approved Democrat ticket of Joe Biden, with his own messy history of interactions with women young and younger, and Kamala Harris, patroness of a boorish jerk in her own office, seems to once and for all suggest that the Democrats have completely abandoned the battlefield in the Sexual Harassment Wars, at least for the time being. If that’s not the case, then they are acknowledging that they are happy to serve up enlisted ranks and non-commissioned officers as cannon fodder — and perhaps once in a while a lieutenant, a captain or even under difficult circumstances a major, but that senior flag officers are untouchable and shall be protected at all costs.

I think a lot of us always suspected that MeToo was supposed to be a cudgel with which to bash conservatives and Donald Trump, but unfortunately for the feminist left rather than an inanimate tool to be wielded exclusively by one party it turned into a rabid dog that bit everything in sight, including the Democrats’ own allies. So tonight we can finally close the book on the seriousness with which this movement deserves to be treated. If you think I’m exaggerating, note that MeToo champion Rose McGowan yesterday named another noted Hollywood director who had molested her in her early teenage years, yet rather than the sort of “thanks for speaking your truth” response she had become accustomed to receiving two years ago, today she was largely treated as a needy drama queen by the commenters at Variety, that noted right-wing media outlet. So let’s eulogize MeToo and recall all the fun times we had eviscerating roguish politicians (of both sexes!) for their awful behavior. The issue of sexual harassment will come back into vogue once Democrats clear the battlefield and bury their dead, so don’t think the issue is going to go away, even though the hashtag probably will be quietly retired once progressive Twitter figures out how to rebrand the issue to its advantage.

Soeaking will be Chuck Schumer (on immigration) John Kerry, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Lisa Blunt Rochester (Congresswoman from Delaware, who is also black) Sally Yates, Bennie Thomas (House Homeland Security Chairman), Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Jill Biden.

Somewhere in there will also be (announced today) a video, narrated by Senator John McCain;s widow, Ciondy, about the friendship between John McCain and Joe Biden.

This sort of thing has been described as an informercial. What you are seeing is what would have been visible to the delegates on a giant jumbo screen, but in other circumstances this would not have been carried in its entirety, except maybe by C-Span and PBS. The major networks would have had their reporters interviewing people.

Colin Powell grew up poor, went to community college, served in the Army for 35 years, and after pulling some guys out of burning helicopter wreckage, started getting promoted a lot, and spent a third of that time at the very top of that organization.

Donald Trump is the exact opposite of Colin Powell. For one mistake, perhaps not even a mistake, Powell is apparently the worst guy in the world, while Trump can tell people to inject their lungs with Clorox and that’s OK.

Why would Powell owe a political party anything? If the party has lost its way, its lost its way. Of course Powell’s life where he clawed his way to being the first black man to do this and that would find something appealing in the first black president. I don’t think it’s that appalling that someone wouldn’t support John Mccain. He only really looks that good in comparison to what came after.

The Republican party isn’t out of power. They might complain a lot, like these problems just happened to them, but they have most of the power right now. The reason immigration and the budget weren’t fixed is because Trump didn’t want to fix them. The reason there’s no wall is that Trump did not want to build a wall. It’s that simple. The GOP administration exists to promote Russia’s foreign policy, and little else.

  41. I am disgusted that Bill Clinton is still being treated with kid gloves by the Democrats. What does he have on key people that he can still be afforded these exclusive gigs? From what I’ve read, he no longer brings in the big bucks to the Party, and he was obviously a liability to Hillary during her run. So exactly why do they honor him? He must have the goods on some pretty powerful people, that’s all I can figure. It is utterly infuriating that such a despicable individual with a solid history of horrendous behavior toward women would still be lauded by these elitist Democrats. Yes, it also lays waste to the MeToo movement. Because unless I hear a loud backlash about his place at the convention, then I will know that it is indeed the bullshit movement I suspected it was. And that is unfortunate, because as JVW’s post illustrates, there is a huge need for a powerful group of women to support and defend and even pony up to help *any* women sexually assaulted by powerful men. Of course, the Hollywood co-opters of the group clearly have trouble looking too closely at their own tribe.

If you really do think plagiarism is worse than defending Ghislaine Maxwell, and perhaps you actually do, then why don’t you ever hold Trump accountable for presenting someone else’s work as his own on his SAT test?

When you selectively ignore the plagiarism of those you support, making up for your tacit plagiarism defense with volume of stomping your feet at Biden’s cheating weakens your point.

Anyway, Biden got the F he deserved and I agree he isn’t worthy to be president if that makes you feel better.

  60. I have now lost respect for Tammy Duckworth. She has just demonstrated that she has no spine when it comes to defending women and condemning the powerful men who abuse them. How dare she rightfully slam Trump for his offenses toward women while letting Bill Clinton off the hook. You can’t be an honest person and rightfully hold one man accountable, while intentionally excusing the other. This is a woman who just sold her soul to the highest bidder: her own ambition. A devil just the same:

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill. defended the decision to include former President Bill Clinton in the lineup of speakers at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday, telling Fox News’ Bret Baier that the party “is a big tent and all sorts of folks fit underneath it.” And I welcome anyone who truly wants to come and work to solve the problems we have in this country.

“And if you want to join Donald Trump,” she added, “I believe he’s often on the golf course.”

“He is a former president, but in the wake of the #MeToo movement, does that change the perspective?” Baier asked Duckworth.

“Like I said,” Duckworth maintained, “I will let Bill Clinton defend himself and I will let him make his remarks tonight and I will be listening, but I will tell you that we have a lot of work to do in this country.”

Shame on her. And shame on the DNC. We already know where I stand with re to the GOP and Trump…

There’s a lot of good socialism in America- and people may not recognize it but like and use it. SS; PO, etc. The problem is when Righties try to privatize a good thing- like the post office; or NASA. If Newt had his way there would only be 4 post offices in Wyoming; he was mor successful w/NASA– the push t privatize only cost two $ billion space shuttles and killed 14 astronauts.

People talk about that all the time
    -Gun deaths
    -Drug deaths
    -Traffic Safety requirements
    -various cancers and heart disease

    They all get talked about.

But go to the CDC website and check out total deaths from all causes and tell if you can’t see something different.

Cheating on your wives (multiple times)?

    Consorting with sex workers?

Sexually objectifying your daughter on national radio?

Bragging how easy it is to sexually assault women by grabbing their private parts?

Describing your niece as “stacked” to her face and in front of your (only American) wife?

Lacking empathy for 170,000+ Americans who have died as a result of the actions or inactions of the administration?

Lacking the grace to acknowledge the deaths and service of political leaders that have differences with you?

Showing concern for someone accused of horrific crimes against young girls?

Cheating at golf by throwing opponents’ balls into bunkers, miscounting strokes and even declaring yourself the winner of tournaments you didn’t play in?

Appointing your unqualified children and in-laws to senior posts and assigning to them responsibilities for which they are way over their heads?

Defending the symbols of slavery and memorials of men who committed treason against the United States?

Posing as a nonexistent publicist, to lie about your wealth and plant stories about your supposed sexual exploits?

Attacking political opponents as “enemies of the state” for disagreeing with you or reporting on facts about your policies, and to advocate their prosecution?

Feeling the need to exaggerate accomplishments in order to belittle others?

Repeating demonstrably false conspiracies in order to generate fear?

Still, plagiarism is not wrong because cheaters always lose. It’s wrong because it’s a character defect. Obsessing over a guy you don’t like doing it, but accepting it with Trump because he can’t be shamed or defeated, it’s kinda undermining this moral angle you had going.

The NY Post calls this ‘shooting down the allegation’ but that’s just clickbait. The ‘maybe they didn’t meet by then’ when she didn’t meeting him until later is frankly a pretty poor alibi.

But if you think Mary Trump made all this up, by all means don’t accept her accusations. I believe her. I think Trump’s cheated every deal, broken almost every promise, and been creepy in ways that match Mary’s description remarkably well. 175. I don’t know where Epstein committed suicide or not, JVW. The circumstances surrounding his death do raise suspicions though. For example, he was on a suicide watch, but the guards neglected to monitor him at the scheduled intervals? That’s a red flag, for sure. And, to my knowledge, the official cause of death was never actually determined. As I recall, there were two conflicting autopsies, one by the coroner or medical examiner at the prison and another by a private physician hired by who knows, the family or Maxwell, or perhaps both. That’s not just another red flag. It’s a glowing neon sign. Something is amiss here.

The simple fact that were a large number of very wealthy, prominent and powerful men associated with Epstein clearly indicates that there more than a few who wanted him silenced. It is doubtless that he was blackmailing them, which is how he built and maintained his fortune. It wasn’t by investments, that’s for sure, not any that would pass legal scrutiny.

Epstein was a pervert of the worst sort, a predator of under-aged girls, and a sex trafficker, and Maxwell was his eager and willing accomplice. What a sick couple those two were.

You have to know that Epstein kept photos and videotapes of him, his partner, and the rich and powerful who participated in their illegal sex activities. That’s what perverts like him do–they keep photos and videotapes, for blackmail or their own sick viewing pleasure, more the former than the latter no doubt.

The question is, where are these photos and videotapes? And why haven’t they been released? I understand the graphic nature of these photos and videotapes may prevent them from public release, but they could certainly be used in a sealed court of law. Now that Epstein is dead, there obviously won’t be a trial against him. But there will be against Maxwell. And there should be against anyone and everyone, no matter how rich, prominent and powerful, found in these photos and videotapes.

Seriously, they could all be charged with child pornography. Under federal law, that would result in severe sentences for each count, to be served consecutively–in some cases, that could result in sentences for several hundred years in prison. So it’s no wonder these perverts and predators don’t want the evidence to come out, not in public but definitely not in court. It would be a day of reckoning that all of them desperately want to avoid. That alone lends credence to the charge that more than one of them wanted Epstein killed.

But what do to with Maxwell? She is going to trial and is kept under tight security. Will she spill the beans? I wouldn’t put it past any one of these perverts to have her killed and stage it as a suicide.

The simple fact that Trump offered his support to Maxwell more than suggests there was more to his relationship with Epstein than is being admitted. One of Epstein’s victims has publicly announced that Epstein showed her off to Trump at Mar a Lago when she was fourteen, and Trump approved of her.

This mess is all so sordid and seedy. If everyone is so willing to accept that Bill Clinton eagerly participated with Epstein in perverted activities on his private plane and island, why aren’t they willing to accept that Donald Trump did as well?

Oh, that’s right, because Democrats defend their sexual predators, and Republicans defend their sexual predators as well.

Lately, these days, I’ve been shaking my head in befuddlement. What happened to the America I grew up in? I don’t know. I could give several reasons for the decline, but it has been so precipitous over just the last few years, I don’t know what to think anymore.

They may think that they are like book clubs, or chess clubs, or gun clubs, where people are brought together by their mutual interest, and Trump with his three country clubs must just really love our country. Or, like at least one Trump supporter here, they may think it’s the same as rural communities.

Needless to say, if they believe those things in the first place, you’d be wasting your time trying to explain to them otherwise.

I’m not really up on the case, but was this island in American jurisdiction? I don’t know that any of these powerful people Epstein and Maxwell recorded actually intended to store the material.

I keep going back to how they fired the prosecutor and tried to install a nobody as his replacement, failed, and Ghislaine was promptly arrested. The timing and Trump’s ‘I wish her well’ doesn’t make the interference look very good.

  182. I. The collapse of institutional liberalism

For a generation after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, most Americans and Europeans regarded Marxism as an enemy that had been defeated once and for all. But they were wrong. A mere 30 years later, Marxism is back, and making an astonishingly successful bid to seize control of the most important American media companies, universities and schools, major corporations and philanthropic organizations, and even the courts, the government bureaucracy, and some churches. As American cities succumb to rioting, arson, and looting, it appears as though the liberal custodians of many of these institutions—from the New York Times to Princeton University—have despaired of regaining control of them, and are instead adopting a policy of accommodation. That is, they are attempting to appease their Marxist employees by giving in to some of their demands in the hope of not being swept away entirely.

We don’t know what will happen for certain. But based on the experience of recent years, we can venture a pretty good guess. Institutional liberalism lacks the resources to contend with this threat. Liberalism is being expelled from its former strongholds, and the hegemony of liberal ideas, as we have known it since the 1960s, will end. Anti-Marxist liberals are about to find themselves in much the same situation that has characterized conservatives, nationalists, and Christians for some time now: They are about to find themselves in the opposition.

  183. It just wasn’t on his island or plane, Dustin, these violations also occurred at his mansion in New York and at other properties he owned in the US, like his ranch in New Mexico, and in other countries as well. Epstein’s was a vast sex-trafficking ring, and everyone involved in it should be indicted, prosecuted and convicted, in whatever jurisdiction has authority.

    Gawain's Ghost (b25cd1)

  184. Maxwell was the boss. She had the jet set background, she had the circle of rich pervert friends, she had the spoiled rich girl upbringing, she had the protection of the Israeli intelligence services*, and she is first on my list of suspects for having Epstein killed to keep him from snitching on her and her circle. If you don’t like her as Blofeld to Epstein’s No. 2, think of her as the Glenn Close to Epstein’s Jeremy Irons in “Dangerous Liaisons.

*Through her father, Robert Maxwell, look him up.

    nk (1d9030)

  185. 137. The speeches were very short, and really impossible, without background knowledge, for anyone to comprehend what was being said (beyond that Donald Trump is doing things wrong)

Most of the speeches were short. Bill Clinton got 4-5 minutes. AOC got 60-90 seconds, I read or heard. I missed it although I saw a sound byte played later on the news.

Donald Trump said he sidn’t know until Tuesday that much of it was pre-recorded. Apparently the Republican Party had not been planning to do that. He thought the reason was to get good takes. I think the reason was so that nobody ventured off script, and they stuck to the time limit.

It wasn’t to eliminate flubs, at least not by Joe Biden. In the pre-recorded speech by his wife, he came on at the end and said he was the husband of Jill Bliden (with an extra “l”) and used the word lady 3 times. It must be his stuttering problem coming back.

By the way, there were 17, not 16, keynote speakers. The 16 plus Stacey Abrams who got a bit more time.

  186. This means that some brave liberals will soon be waging war on the very institutions they so recently controlled. They will try to build up alternative educational and media platforms in the shadow of the prestigious, wealthy, powerful institutions they have lost. Meanwhile, others will continue to work in the mainstream media, universities, tech companies, philanthropies, and government bureaucracy, learning to keep their liberalism to themselves and to let their colleagues believe that they too are Marxists—just as many conservatives learned long ago how to keep their conservatism to themselves and let their colleagues believe they are liberals.

This is the new reality that is emerging. There is blood in the water and the new Marxists will not rest content with their recent victories. In America, they will press their advantage and try to seize the Democratic Party. They will seek to reduce the Republican Party to a weak imitation of their own new ideology, or to ban it outright as a racist organization. And in other democratic countries, they will attempt to imitate their successes in America. No free nation will be spared this trial. So let us not avert our eyes and tell ourselves that this curse isn’t coming for us. Because it is coming for us.

  187. 190. Jeffrey Epstein being dead made Ghislaine Maxwell the number one target. How would it make sense for her for Jeffrey Epstein to be dead? And was anybody going to give Jeffrey Epstein much less time in order for him to implicate Ghislaine Maxwell? How was she ever his boss, anyway? She was his enabler, for a time. A crucial enabler, maybe, in the 1990s.

It looks like a real suicide (unless the guards were paid off etc) but if anybody did it it would be somebody whose name hadn’t come up yet.

Of course I agree that to the extent they can be brought to justice they should be, and even if they can’t, might as well publicize if some powerful person did a terrible thing.

I think these guys were legitimate criminal masterminds and were thoughtful about what they did in New York or Mars a Lago versus what they did on this island. I also am sure the feds can convict them of something because… let’s be honest there are about ten million laws.

I think the reason was so that nobody ventured off script, and they stuck to the time limit.

Bingo Sammy. The same frustration conservatives have, the liberals have. Both sides think the other side is an crazy extremo version of its ideals, but really both sides are barely controllable because of preference cascades. Gotta keep things under control.

I keep going back to how they fired the prosecutor and tried to install a nobody as his replacement, failed, and Ghislaine was promptly arrested.

Actually, the proper timing was that Ghislaine was arrested after that acting SDNY prosecutor was replaced. Coincidental? Maybe.. . but the timing is strange as it implied that the fired prosecutor was the reason why she wasn’t arrested yet.

The timing and Trump’s ‘I wish her well’ doesn’t make the interference look very good.

    Dustin (4237e0) — 8/19/2020 @ 7:21 am

    Interference?

I took that as the usual ol’ Trump backhanded sarcasm…not some sincere statement of actually wishing her well.

That’s one of the political character trait that drives me bonkers… Trump’s sarcasm meter doesn’t have an “off” switch, and as a politician, that’s an awful trait to have as it opens doors to criticisms.

It’s literally the genesis of that mantra repeated by Trump’s supporters of taking him “Seriously, not literally”.

Who else in politics is as sarcastic as Trump? I can’t think of another… Cruz can be, by he’s judicious with his sarcasms.

I’m not really up on the case, but was this island in American jurisdiction?

It was part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, but Jeffrey Epstein owned 100% of the island. He was not the law, there, though, except nobody came or went there without his permission. (as I understand it)

I don;t believe he knew many people like himself. He wanted to make “friends,” true, but that wouldn’t be a very practical way of creating them.

The big question about Jeffrey Epstein is how he got so much money. They like to say he blackmailed people; more likely he swindled them, and cheated his partners in a Ponzi scheme.

I wanted a tall walls wide gates kind of immigration where we made the laws we want and enforced them fair and square. Trump has made immigration an impossible issue for conservatives. Some of this is because the press were unfair to Trump. Those photos of Obama era children in cages for example. But Trump is so bad at posing as a conservative he’s babbling about Mexicans being rapists.

Actually, the proper timing was that Ghislaine was arrested after that acting SDNY prosecutor was replaced. Coincidental

Whembly, you say that like you contradicted me. Because you are dishonest. Trump failed in his effort. Whatever it was he was seeking, he failed because the loser Barr tried to install didn’t get installed. It seemed like a pretty desperate, last ditch effort. They lied that the USA resigned and he bucked up in front of the whole nation about it, ensuring that a specific person remained in control.

And she very promptly arrested Ghislaine.

This suggests the interference effort was related to Trump’s close relationship with Ghislaine.

  201. Whembly & Dustin,

This is a great example of why conspiracy theories annoy me.

Conspiracy theory 1: Trump & Barr are trying to hide Epstien’s crimes. Barr tried to fire the DAG for the SDNY to slow down / end the investigation of Maxwell. The timing lines up. They were building their case but once the DAG knew they were out to get him they arrested Maxwell. Also Trump said he wishes Maxwell all the best on 2 separate occasions to try and keep her from implicating him.

Conspiracy theory 2: Trump & Barr are trying to expose Epstien’s crimes. Barr tried to fire the DAG for the SDNY to speed up the investigation of Maxwell. The timing lines up. Once the DAG was out of the way they were able to arrest Maxwell. Trump was clearly being sarcastic when he wished Maxwell all the best on 2 separate occasions so she’d know he was coming for her, but couldn’t claim her investigation was politically motivated.

Both are plausible, but neither have a lot of evidence to support them.
We don’t know how long they were investigating Maxwell or why they arrested her when they did. We don’t know why Barr wanted to fire the DAG, or why he lied about it. We don’t know what information about other pedophiles Maxwell has.

The left hated Giuliani because he was tough on crime, but no one can deny he made the city safer, returned it to being a tourist mecca and a place that businesses invested trillions of dollars.

All that is now being burned away.

There will always be bad cops, but in the largest police department in the nation, they had done a job many thought impossible, and as we are seeing cities go to ruin by bankrupt leadership, it is becoming impossible once again.

Though I will admit that I have a personal prejudice against nuclear power. My grandfather died due to wartime exposure to nuclear material and I pretty much refuse to consider it as viable alternative until we have a practical way to deal with used fissible material and other irradiated waste products that does not involve “stick them in the ground and/or in a cave and pray.” I also have significant concerns over the way we have renewed out of date nuclear plants in the past, especially since there also isn’t a good plan for decommissioning them.

All that is now being burned away.

There will always be bad cops, but in the largest police department in the nation, they had done a job many thought impossible, and as we are seeing cities go to ruin by bankrupt leadership, it is becoming impossible once again.

It depends on the goal. If the goal is a better, safer city, you take problems, serious and minor, and improve them. Bad cops = improve the cops. Every employer knows how you improve the quality of your employees.

I don’t credit Giuliani with NYC’s amazing improvement so much as I credit him for recognizing progress and not getting in the way. Commissioner Bratton’s broken windows theory was that if you go after all the people who refuse to pay for the subway, you eliminate most of the other crime, and when that turned out to be true, he applied it with massive amounts of very well trained police officers. It isn’t cheap, but it made NYC almost a luxury to walk around, which turned out to pay for the cost, just as you say. The folks in NYC are more powerful than the folks in Minneapolis or St Louis, but there’s another issue at play. All the powerful folks realize they can work from home now. They couldn’t do that in New York 20 years ago.

We’re witnessing a terrible abandonment of the weak in our cities.

  261. @268 Why do you never know what you are talking about? You can google PG&E and profits and get factual information as to where their money is going as well as information on the choices the company made instead of doing proper maintenance (hint: It doesn’t have to do with green energy). Stop spouting political cliches or linking to people spouting political cliches and get your own thoughts.

  262. I see that lying corksoaker 0bama told the Shamvention audience about federal officers going after “peaceful protestors”.
