Oh Yeah, As If This Is Gonna Happen

Somehow I missed this the other day, but I was helpfully just made aware of an urgent request in a newsletter from my Congressman (and our host’s!) Ted Lieu (D – Twitter):

As thousands continue to come together for a second week of protests against police brutality, Los Angeles County’s health director urged protesters to self-quarantine and get tested for the coronavirus Monday.

“We’re still in the midst of a pandemic,” health director Barbara Ferrer said. “COVID-19 remains easy to transmit… Every single social interaction that happens outside your household comes with risk to both the people who interact.”

L.A. County reported 823 new coronavirus cases and another 10 deaths attributed to the respiratory illness Monday, bringing the countywide total to 64,644 with 2,655 deaths.

Those who believe they’ve been exposed to the coronavirus because they weren’t able to keep at least 6 feet away from others who weren’t wearing masks should self-quarantine for 14 days — the whole coronavirus incubation period, Ferrer said.

And while quarantining, residents should be particularly careful to protect loved ones who may be at risk for more serious illness because of their age or underlying health conditions. That means not sharing bedding and wearing masks at home.

If no symptoms develop after the 14-day period, “you’re very unlikely to develop the virus,” she said.

Be on the lookout for those lines of woke youngsters clad in vintage clothes with fashionable eyeglasses and people wearing Vans waiting patiently on queue — six feet apart and with masks on! — to get their COVID-19 tests. But I guess after looking the other way throughout all of the mass gatherings last week, the county has to pretend like this is still a major concern on their radar. And, of course, any new outbreaks in urban America will be blamed on Republican governors and anyone who agitated to get back to work.

  1. Life sure would be swell for a while if the wokedy-woke crowd would self-quarantine for a fortnight.

  2. 1. …or two. Or ten. Hell, I don’t care if they hibernate for the winter.

  3. Leftists can do what they want, protest, riot, arson, get conservatives fired, ban Republicans who don’t toe the leftist agenda, but it’s “white males” who have privilege. Maybe they do, if they’re leftists.

  4. In the meantime, my rural county has had one confirmed COVID-19 case.

    One!

The unspoken-by-the-media truth is that this is an urban disease. The basic facts of urban living, population density and close quarters, are the prime factors in spreading this, or any disease.

  5. I’m envisioning two separate scenarios. Scenario one is Ms. Ferrer and her lieutenants sitting around a big table, masks on and six feet separating each of them, and having a really earnest discussion:

Doctor 1: “Uh, given that there were numerous examples of protesters failing to maintain social distancing and not wearing face masks, I think we need we as a board need to address that.”

Doctor 2: “You are absolutely correct, doctor. What steps would you recommend.”

Doctor 1: “Well, I think we should suggest that all protesters voluntarily self-quarantine for 14 days, and make them aware that if they think they were exposed to the virus that they need to go in for a test. We should also tell them to self-monitor their symptoms during their quarantine.”

Ferrer: “OK, we’ll release the announcement immediately.”

And then this is how I want the whole thing to have gone. This time the doctors are sitting in the meeting room mixing cocktails and smoking a bit of weed. No one is wearing masks or keeping away from each other.

Doctor 1, downing the last gulps of a double scotch: “You know what would be hilarious? What if we announced that everyone who attended a protest last week ought to voluntarily self-quarantine for 14 days and come in for testing? Wouldn’t that be hysterical?”

Doctor 2, taking a huge hit on a bong and coughing out a bit of smoke: “Dude! That would be epic! They’ll be all like ‘Whaaa?’ and we can see if the news media takes us seriously. Let’s do it!”

Ferrer, poking holes in a beer can in order to shotgun it: “Guys, you’re nuts. Ok, I’ll have the press release drafted.”

Anyway, I would feel a whole lot better about the county health muckedy-mucks if I thought that the latter was closer to the truth.

  6. 4. A lot of diseases are. After the Romans left Londinium, it became a major hub for trade because of its foundation on the Thames and it wasn’t long before it also developed a reputation for being a hotbed of filth, blight, and sickness. No one really had a grasp on just why that was the case until hundreds of years later when Semmelweis and Pasteur figured it out.

  7. What did it cost to put out this announcement?

It doesn’t have to be all of them. It doesn’t even have to be more than ten of them. If only ten of them get tested and/or self-quarantine, would the announcement still be a joke and a waste? If none of them do, would it still be a joke and a waste?

  8. And if someone like, oh, Operation Rescue were to protest, it would be billy clubs and tear gas unless they wore masks.

  10. Can’t do any harm to make an announcement, maybe some people will listen.

  11. Can’t do any harm to make an announcement, maybe some people will listen.

Yes, I know, but this is more about the health department being curiously silent during the protests but now keen on cleaning up after themselves now that the protests are (apparently) behind us. The same people who told us that a church service would be akin to killing grandma had very little to say about pouring into the streets to vent in the name of longstanding grievances. And pretending that a bunch of social justice warriors who didn’t give a damn about masks and social distancing last week are suddenly going to isolate themselves at home for the next two weeks, right as summer begins, is laughable. But, as you point out, they are now on the record as officially suggesting everyone play it safe. As the kids would say (though they probably don’t anymore), “Whatever.”

  12. Could be they figure people are more likely to listen now than they were then.

Unless they’ve stopped in the last 3 months, “the kids” do still say “whatever”.
