Today in Insufferable Celebrities

[guest post by JVW]

The COVID-19 lockdown brought us the unimaginable horror of celebrities singing a mindless John Lennon song about a world with no possessions, all from the comfort of their multi-million-dollar mansions. So it was pretty certain that the same Hollywood/New York/ski resort crowd would bother us with hare-brained virtue signaling around the whole issue of police brutality and black lives. Created by an outfit called Confluential Films which would appear to be the brainchild of a black film producer named Tommy Oliver, producer of a bunch of films that I have never heard of, I present to you this two-minute short called “I Take Responsibility.”

About the only fun part of these pompous and grating exercises in self-indulgence is to try to guess in advance which celebrities will ritually abase themselves in a vain effort to prove that they are indeed Good People. I didn’t recognize the gal on the thumbnail, but I guessed we would see the usual lineup of Demi Moore, Will Farrell, Alyssa Milano, Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, Mark Ruffalo, Anna Kendrick, along with a secondary character from a comic book movie, a dullard from Saturday Night Live, a mostly forgotten actor from The Lord of the Rings or the Harry Potter series, a handsome 30-something heartthrob once nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar whose name I would not be able to recall, and two people from semi-popular television series that I do not watch. Write down your guesses and then watch the movie, and tell us how you did in your picks.

After viewing this video all I am going to tell you is that it is even worse than I had expected. Actors are gonna act, but this is the definition of chewing the scenery.

  1. Who cares? if you want to stop hearing what celebrities think about anything other than making movies or playing sports stop paying attention to them and sharing their meaningless patter. This post just increases the visibility of these insufferable celebrities you claim to dislike.

  2. I’m reminded of the scene in Wicked! where Galinda shortens her name to Glinda to honor the unjustly arrested Dr Dillamond.

  3. Off Topic: Although I filled out my Census form on April 8 I recoeved a yellow postcard yesterday asking me to respond to my Census form (qith new code numbers)

On closer inspection, they had a slight typo in the address. It must have come from a mailing list. It is anon existent address.

  4. Maybe you’ll like this one better, JVW.

  5. And I’m a fan of Veronica Mars and Joy Lenz. Yech.

You sound like every toddler’s mother: “Just ignore them and they’ll go away.” Sorry, but I prefer to mock them mercilessly.

  7. @6 yes.

  8. OK, so the Veronica Mars gal — Kristen Bell, right? — was in the commercial. I also recognized Julianne Moore, and I think that first gal with the glasses is Demi Moore, isn’t it? I also saw Jessica Chastain, if I am not mistaken. But who is bald glasses guy? Who is bearded guy against the brick wall? Who is bearded bald guy? Who is the blonde with long hair? Who is the stylistically-coiffed and heavy-makeup gal? Gal in black with long curly hair? Gal with blondish-darkish hair with the big eyebrows? Grey-haired guys who needs a shave?

It’s getting so that I don’t know who is who in Hollywood these days.

  9. Veronica Mars, Natasha Romanov, Jesse Pinkman — all well played by really good actors. That doesn’t mean they know sh1t about anything real.

The tragedy is not that they feel obligated to parrot these views, but that far too many listen and form “their” opinions on what Kristen Bell, Scarlett Johannson or Aaron Paul think.

  10. The bald glasses guy was Stanley Tucci (Devil Wears Prada)

  11. One actor to another: “Is this the line to denounce yourself in support of the Revolution?”
Other actor: “No, I did that yesterday. This is the line for the guillotine.”

  12. Not dr erskine, we know kirsten committing category error with the minimum wage and she had logan echolls kidded (as exec producer)

  13. The only actor I could name was Stanley Tucci. I noticed that they “padded” the video with several actors appearing more than once. What, they couldn’t find more actors?

I remember a PSA from way back that was sponsored by the WWF where ordinary people would simply say “I’m an American.” The tremendous variety of phenotypes was remarkable, considering that the “other” thing that united them was their love of wrestling. I wanna say that it aired not too long after 9/11.

That reminds me of a Doonesbury bit:

Character 1: Say how’s your county’s new Constitution working out? Are the courts reformed?
Character 2: Actually we just had our first case thrown out on a technicality! Turns out the accused had already been executed.

  15. @6 A lot of old sayings are still around because they’re full of truth. It’m sure all those celebrities are losing a lot of sleep over your disapproval and not making any more ad revenue from your links.

    Manotaur (e632fa)

  16. @6 Also, that kind of thinking is why I know who the Kardashian are.

  17. scarlet was not there, elizabeth olsen was, is hostage video, the only model of presentation they know?

  18. I Take Responsibility. I blame Trump.

  19. One good thing about getting old is you lose touch with Pop Culture and don’t know who the current big celebrities are. I remember my daughter talking about some pop singer, Lady gaga, and I have no idea who she is. The same is true of the current movie stars. Are there still Stars? If there are, I don’t care about them. SOrry.

  20. i remember watching Thin red line in 1998 and everyone was upset George Cloony has such a small part, and I was like “Who the hell is Geroge Clooney”?

    rcocean (fcc23e)

  21. We’ve cut the cord and got rid of TV. My daughter watches her shows on her computer and my wife watches her foreign shows on her IPad. Me, i don’t watch nothing except old movies.

That’s right. Back when I still watched Tv, I recall Davis Lettermen doing a “man on the street” schtick, asking respondents if they had ever heard of Julio Eglesias. One woman answered “I haven’t heard of anybody since Eddie Cantor.”

And I was “Yeah, I like that guy!”

Machete Kills Again … In Space.

  24. What’s amusing about Eddie in the third link, is that he makes a subtle reference to his age when he sings “he doesn’t ph-phone” by starting to mime the “old” two-piece phone before remembering the “new-fangled” on-piece phone with both ear and mouth parts. Start at 2:09.

    felipe (023cc9)

  25. HA! That’s great, nk!

  26. I could see some of these actors reading from a cue card. Really? They’re actors. They can’t memorize a few words? They manage to memorize lines for a movie. I guess movies are just more important than the cause du jour.
