Trump Allies Riled Up: Why Are You Not Burying Biden?

Filed under: General — Dana @ 2:13 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Trump allies are getting nervous:

With only five months until the November general election, several Trump advisers, campaign veterans and prominent Republicans see the Trump campaign’s efforts to define and damage former vice president Joe Biden falling short.

These Trump supporters worry the campaign’s myriad lines of attack on Biden this spring — from his age to his work with China as vice president to the Obama economic record — are failing to dent the presumptive Democratic nominee. Recent polling shows Trump trailing Biden in key swing states such as Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, with the Republican control of the Senate increasingly up for grabs due to a depressed economy and nationwide angst about the coronavirus pandemic.

“Take the gloves off and put him away,” said one Republican close to the White House. “If you have the cash advantage and you have all of June, why are you not burying him?”

The report notes that the Trump campaign originally planned to promote the booming economy and low unemployment rates during the campaign, but then the coronavirus came along, and now that is not a winning message.

One adviser notes that “They have not coalesced around the best message to attack Biden, and the message that Biden is diminished doesn’t scare people enough.”

According to this Fox News poll, Trump allies and supporters are right to be concerned:

  1. Biden’s winning message is that, he is not Trump. I just don’t see Trump’s base increasing, but depending how the summer goes and where we’re at with regard to the economy and the virus, I can see him losing supporters. Especially as the virus continues to hit regions that came out in full support of him.

  2. “ A U.S. senator read into the congressional record accusations, wholly without evidence, that an honorable and accomplished man is a gang-rapist for no reason other than that fair democratic elections have rendered them politically impotent to stop his nomination to the Supreme Court. When this happens and, in turn, is enabled and cheered on by the media industrial complex, don’t expect Trump supporters to feel convicted or responsible for what Trump does or says.

When nearly every major news agency in the country is implicated in the vicious social media pile-on and physical threats directed at a Catholic high school kid for the crime of wearing a MAGA hat, to the point outlets such as CNN are quietly settling libel suits, you start to see why Trump voters are nonplussed right now.

When Trump is singled out for his outrageous comments, while Joe Biden gets portrayed as an avuncular goofball for decades of horrifying behavior, it starts to make sense why Trump voters can’t be bothered to care. In 2012, Biden told black voters Mitt Romney was going to “put y’all back in chains.” That’s about as vicious as it gets. Since Biden started running for president in 2020, he has actually threatened to hit another voter who questioned him about his campaign’s addled position on gun rights. He’s also called a voter fat and a liar, and challenged him to an IQ test because he had the audacity to ask Biden about his son’s suspect million-dollars-a-year at a dodgy Ukrainian gas company.

In case you’re wondering if there are any media double standards at work here when Biden gratuitously insults people, this is CNN: “In a human moment defending his son, Biden showed the authenticity, emotion and readiness for a fight that appeals to so many Democrats as they look for someone who can take on Trump.”

  3. Because it’s too soon…

Wait till Aug/Sept to start hammering Biden.

    No. It. Never. Does.

  5. What I get from that poll is that most people haven’t reexamined their initial pick and won’t for a while. There are a number of distractions.

  6. The way this will eventually break is over the pandemic and who was hurt by it. Excluding ethnic bloc voters, the people who normally support the Democrats disproportionately are college-educated, affluent suburban voters and working class/lower-middle-class voters.

The reaction to the lockdown will split these groups abnormally. Most of those hurt have been the working class whose jobs were generally not the kind that you can do from home (e.g. retail, office support, restaurant and other service jobs). The white-collar folks got a pass. The type of people who rent have been hurt, they type that own houses not so much (and house pricess have not suffered).

In any event, the “what have you done for me lately” dynamic is not going to be the usual one, and Trump is doing his best to play every side of the street possible. That requires massive yet inconsistent lying, something he is a master of.

  7. As in:

Reporter: President Trump, Saturday you told the AARP that if it was not for your forthright response to the virus, millions would have died, but yesterday, speaking to the Young Americans for Freedom, you attacked all those that had shut down their jobs. How do you reconcile these two statements?

Trump: There you go again, you Commie bastard!

I think at some point a difference in amount becomes a difference in kind.

  10. To riff off the post title…
The fewer Americans who are buried between now and October, the easier it will be for Trump to bury Biden.

  11. Howaboutism is the biggest lie that the Trumpkin Satanic Cult peddles. L-I-E, lie! They don’t believe it, themselves, and they don’t care. If Christ came back to Earth and ran against Trump, they would crucify Him again. They are the repository of the deadly sins, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony, and sloth (they only have false pride); Trump is their personal Beast; and MAGA is their 666.

  12. Meanwhile……

“ Before she became a senator and a top contender for former Vice President Joe Biden’s vice presidential spot, Klobuchar spent eight years as the Hennepin County attorney, in charge of prosecution for Minneapolis. And while in that position, Klobuchar declined to prosecute multiple police officers cited for excessive force, and did not prosecute the officer who kneeled on Floyd’s neck as he protested,”

  13. No, harkin, it wouldn’t be “big news”. It’s a common tendency among prosecutors of all stripes to not prosecute LEOs. You can satisfy yourself on this with some research. It’s also a common source of public discord.

  14. Opportunism, Ragspierre. Opportunism and lies. This is the week that beating up on cops has traction. No President ever has been a bigger encourager, instigator, defender, of police misconduct than the orange slimebucket.

  18. Another pleasant prospect from Biden picking a normal, sane, centrist, Midwestern lady, is that it might prompt the orange to dump his current bidet, Pence, for a woman, and it would serve Pence right.

A bit dark, but it works.

  20. They can metaphorically split the baby with Val Demings. Mr. Demings is more Terry Crews than Reginald Veljohnson (actors associated with fictional TV cops), so if Joe went for the cheap feel he’d be in really bad way.

It is more sad that AK is the only sane midwest Dem lady worth a damn – all Gretchen had to do was let people buy seeds.

  21. I’ll bet Trump’s buddy, Vlad, might have some helpful tips, especially after that Zelensky thing blew up in his face, but Trump’s current Karen-in-Chief schtick won’t work.
