A Couple of New Political Ads For Your Viewing Pleasure

Filed under: General — Dana @ 8:11 pm

[guest post by Dana]

First, we have a Joe Biden campaign ad (depicting Trump as “rolling over” for China, and tough-guy Biden taking them on):

Next up is a Trump campaign ad (going after Nancy Antoinette):

[Ed. I told you the optics were bad when she did this. The ad wrote itself. ]

Watch them before you comment, please.

  1. Hello.

    Dana (0feb77)

  2. Biden’s ad is substantive. Smart to turn Trump’s strategy of scapegoating China around on him.

Trump’s ad is pathetic – I wonder if he’s going without ice cream in the White House?

Biden’s ad will still resonate months from now.

How long do you suppose people will care about Nancy’s ice cream?

    Dave (1bb933)

  3. Trump is famous for eating a lot of ice cream…

    And he’s also famous for

    those absurd family photos.

    He’s whining about a rich person’s fridge?

But Trump is also famous for being supported by idiots who refuse to accept information that’s bad about Trump. Even now, when America’s at its lowest point in any of our lives, it’s deflected as ‘orange man bad’ ‘nevertrumper’ ‘fake news’.

    Dustin (c56600)

  4. Honestly, Dave, I think more people are going to latch onto the Trump ad because it’s classic Trump: it’s simple and feeds into an us v. them classism that Trump supporters eat up, and possibly non-Trump-out-of-work Americans might identify with.

The Biden ad is very good, but it requires more of an awareness of the specifics about Trump’s relationship with China and his actions during the coronavirus outbreak. Also, does Biden positioning himself as tough guy with China draw in voters?

    Dana (0feb77)

  5. Trump’s ad is formulaic and it uses a tactic that has proven to work out for him. His followers love this stuff.

    Dana (0feb77)

  6. Trump’s ad appeals to his base, but he can’t win with just his base. He’s also not running against Pelosi.

    Davethulhu (ba84db)

  7. Gotta ask- is “Unprepared: Joe Biden For President” the official, genuine, real world, for the history books actual title of the ad?

If it is, the title Unprepared: Joe Biden For President alone is today’s ‘Official JoeyBee Gaffe.’

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  8. I read from one of the commenters here, that Pelosi’s fridges could have cost as much as $30,000. And just to think that for only $100,000 more, that stable genius businessman Mr. President Trump got a stripper who reminded him of his daughter to spank him with a Forbes magazine.

    nk (1d9030)

  9. Davethulhu,

I can see that. Does Biden’s ad bring in new voters?

    Dana (0feb77)

  10. Nancy Pelosi– Net worth: $120 million (celebritynetworth.com)

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  11. If it is, the title Unprepared: Joe Biden For President alone is today’s ‘Official JoeyBee Gaffe.’

Hillary tried to be something more than she was. She tried to be a winner, a leader, wise, capable.

Maybe she should have just run on how awful Trump is.

Biden can’t even catch up with the girls he wants to grope. He turns his phone light on to look for his phone at night.

Point being, Biden knows he can’t beat Trump by presenting a rational case for his presidential capabilities.

But Trump is a daily outrage. He lies and he cheats. He’s unworthy. Trump sold out our friends. He would sell out our families.

If Biden picks a VP with any celebrity factor, who is willing to go nuts on bashing Trump, it won’t even be close. If Biden picks another ‘don’t-show-me-up’ Tom Kaine or Mike Pence, Trump can overcome.

Everyone says Biden needs Michelle Obama, but he needs Oprah.

    Dustin (c56600)

  12. also I think Pelosi represents everything awful about our political system, and I think her decision to broadcast her kitchen in a time of great neediness was dumb and ugly

But I also think a $30,000 fridge full of designer ice cream is badass. I have a good friend who is a former cop turned entrepreneur. He had a fridge in a warehouse with just ice cream in it. God Bless America cause that’s freedom. Not one single Trump fan would have one single problem with Trump having some absurd fridge full of designer ice cream. Which he does have, cause when has Trump ever attacked someone for something Trump isn’t also guilty of?

    Dustin (c56600)

  13. I hold Nancy Pelosi up as an example of Real Woman Empowerment* to my daughter. Marrried for 57 years, raised five kids**, still working hard at age 80, the most politically powerful woman in America as Speaker of the House, and second in the line of succession to the Presidency.

*In contrast to the Trumpettes, whose empowerment consists of rich daddies and rich husbands.
** Who have produced a good number of grandkids and that’s why the big kitchen and big fridges. (And also how she knows how to deal with the orange toddler’s tantrums.)

    nk (1d9030)

  14. The Pelosi ad actually works really well for the Joe Biden Campaign. It’s mostly sad scenes of how much America sucks these days. Starving Americans who have no hope, so how dare Pelosi be so insensitive.

All you need is a solid five second end “Is America Great Again?” and the ad is devastating to Trump.

Trump had to be responsible for the idiotic decision to personally attack her. He sure gets mad at strong women.

    Dustin (c56600)

  15. Better for Trump to attack Pelosi than defend his record.
I wonder how much Trump’s fridges cost at any of his domiciles.

    Paul Montagu (0073cc)

  16. Not one single Trump fan would have one single problem with Trump having some absurd fridge full of designer ice cream.

They would, however, be outraged if anyone criticized him for it.

Trump is also famous for being supported by idiots who refuse to accept information that’s bad about Trump.

I used to talk politics with a neighbor, an older lady. That stopped a few years ago when she got very angry that I said something critical of Trump.
Today the chat veered into coronavirus, and she believes that Trump “stopped it” at the border with his “travel ban.” She believes that the death numbers are being inflated. I mentioned data suggesting that they may actually be undercounted. That made her angry.
She believes that she is better informed on the subject than I am because she watches Fox News, which she regards as the only honest news network. And because she thinks her son has the real scoop on every important story.
She insists that neither Fox nor Trump ever downplayed it at all. And she thinks everyone else is exaggerating it.

    Radegunda (39c35f)

  17. I don’t think either of them are very good for their purpose.

    1. The Biden ad isn’t punchy enough and it’s too long. The idea is good and could carry, but it should be 3 ads instead of 1.

    2. The add with Nancy Pelosi is more effectively written, if it was an ad against Pelosi. It won’t work against Biden. If you are running against a person, you have to run against them, not a person who might be vaguely adjacent to them. And all it’s going to do is remind people that Trump is rich too, which plays into Biden’s hands since his whole schtick is “I’m just like you, man, I understand the problems of the blue collar worker because that’s how I grew up.”

    Nic (896fdf)

  18. I am waiting for trump as interviewing Tara Reade. Also video with joe biden saying communist china is not an economic threat as the chi-coms give hunter biden 1.5 billion dollars!

Those are excellent points, Dustin. Well done.

    felipe (023cc9)

  20. thoughts and prayers for all you elitists, hope hollywood and china continue to float your boat

    mg (8cbc69)

  21. You can’t go wrong, praying for your enemies, mg. What makes it hard is the intention behind those prayers; the better the intentions for your enemies, the harder it is to it is to ask.

It is all too easy to pray for their condemnation. One of the best prayers is “Forgive them, Lord, for they know not what they do.” This dovetails so well with a part of another prayer: …and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those…”

    Stay safe and well.

    felipe (023cc9)

  22. Great point Felipe. We know not what we do. It’s hard to enter politics without anger towards others these days, or just hoping to see someone lose. I personally want to see Trump and Biden lose. I don’t watch these ads looking for reasons either of these men would be great people.

And the ads seem to be made with that in mind. Neither of them had a single positive thing to say, neither of them gave me a reason why Trump or Biden would be great, or why anything in particular is good. The best thing in the ads is that I am reminded that ice cream is a thing.

    Dustin (c56600)

  23. I think these are both aimed at the base.

The point of the Trump Ad

“Democrats are out of touch elites that aren’t doing enough to help average people
Good add for motivating his base. Will drive up negative brand image for democrats as a whole. Nancy Pelosi isn’t running for president so it’s weak with low info voters. If Democrats start vocally demanding more aid this line of attack will weaken. It also runs into the generic republican brand image of ‘spend less to help people’.

The point of the Biden Ad.

Trump is terrible and messed up the response to corona.
Good ad to drive up Trump’s negatives for people that care about this issue. Driving up the negatives is useful at this point to help rally the base around him after the primary by making the point that this is now a Biden or Trump choice.
If the issue stays live until election this could be very effective. If it doesn’t it will be less so.

For the general public it’s a little weak because Trump has worked so hard to brand himself as a fighter. But Biden might be planning to attack him there. This will be hard with low information voters because Trump seems willing to say anything to sell his message and can counter the message by threatening to nuke Madagascar or invade the Maldives or buy Greenland or something. Biden is somewhat constrained by a reluctance to completely make things up.

They’re both well made and could work at what they do but I don’t think either is a knock out punch. Of the two I think the Biden add is more effective because it talks about Trump directly and has 2 possible pay offs. The Trump add doesn’t talk about Biden directly, but is a good use of an own goal on Pelosi’s part.

  24. Regunda @16

That doesn’t surprise me at all. Most people aren’t dispassionate decision making machines. The make decisions based on how they feel.

Trumps message has been pretty clear for a long time.
“Everything I do is great. Everything other people did was crap. I’m better than everyone. I’m on the side of white Christian men and I want to keep white Christian men powerful and respected as a group.” He’ll do / say whatever he can to make his supporters feel good about themselves and strenuously avoid anything that will make them feel bad.

He’s done a great job of building an affinity for himself with his target base. Information that shows him to be dishonest, weak or incompetent makes those who affiliate themselves with him feel that they are also dishonest, weak or incompetent. No one likes to feel bad about themselves so they work to rationalize why that message is wrong. If they can’t do that they typically rationalize that if it’s true, it’s not that bad or other people are worse so they’re relative self image isn’t diminished.

This theory doesn’t apply to everyone, or explain every behavior but it explains a lot of the behavior i see.

    Time123 (36651d)

  25. i love mr. president trump because he made america great again

    thank you, mr. dustin

    nk (1d9030)

  26. Dana,

Mostly what I remember is how much I hate negative ads.

The Biden ad is at least based on something substantive, but even so, it relies on some distortions. (The President’s tweet occurred after his series of “China’s cool” statements, but, through the magic of editing, it appears to have occurred before them). Also, it indulges in the negative ad trope of getting into high dudgeon that the other side dares to launch negative ads about their candidate. Maybe this helps convince a disgruntled independent. I roll eyes and regret watching the ad for the privilege of making a comment on it.

The Trump ad is just about images (because that’s all they got). Pelosi with ice cream; poor folks with nothing but the bitter dregs of an elite that left them behind. It isn’t going to convince anyone, but will keep the base happy. They don’t like uppity happy powerful women of the left who read those glossy women’s magazines. This would have made a good ad for the Bernie Sanders campaign. As a Trump ad — not persuasive.

    Appalled (1a17de)

  27. All I feel is disgust, sadness, and disappointment. Maybe in the spirit of enjoying the nice warmth coming from my house fire, I should care about these ads. I just don’t.

    Ragspierre (d9bec9)

  28. That second one. What a great ad on behalf of such a horrible person.

    Patterico (115b1f)

  29. I still can’t believe Pelosi was so tone-deaf and unguarded during a pandemic. It’s like it was her first day in politics or something.

    Dana (0feb77)

  30. The Biden Ad is a boring same-o-schtick political ads. Only the most anti-Trump/pro-Democrat would it resonate.

The Pelosi Ad is entertaining gutter-politics that anyone would appreciate. That Pelosi did that, to me, has the same effect as Romney’s 49% spiel and Clinton’s basket of deplorables. It’s really damning and it would be malpractice for the Trump campaign to NOT have used that. The lack of self-awareness by Pelosi is something else.

    whembly (fd57f6)

  31. Can’t believe Pelosi is so out of touch that she thought that was a good look.

The amount of famous people out there just chilling in their luxury bunkers and telling everyone ‘we’ll get through this hell’ while ignoring those out there on the front lines is amazing.

Dana – if possible please add the Chris Cuomo quarantine bunker fraud to the mix. It was the best virus video self-own of the month so far.

    harkin (c72ccb)

  32. 1st ad is red meat to the leftist base and NeverTrump because it blames Trump for everything, but ignores the left’s close ties to China and their desire to keep the borders open as well as attacking Trump on every issue he presents.

The 2nd ad is red meat to Trump supporters and those who know Nancy and her team don’t give a damn about Americans as long as they are living in the lap of luxury.

They both won’t reach that many politically ignorant people.

    NJRob (4d595c)

  33. Oh, if only wishes were horses instead of horseschiff, Dave.

    Colonel Haiku (7caebd)

  34. @11.But Trump is a daily outrage. He lies and he cheats. He’s unworthy. Trump sold out our friends. He would sell out our families.

He’s entertaining. Just like JR Ewing-the bad boy everybody loves and loves to hate.

    DCSCA (797bc0)

  35. Isn’t, this an apples to oranges comparison? The Pelosi ad is more useful for Republican House candidates. Trump has an ad, shown at one briefing, that is very effective against Biden. He has not spent an ad dime to put it on the air..

Is any Trump ad now a waste of money? Biden can not be the candidate (because of his dementia), unless the Dem establishment wants to lose.

    DLN (510e40)

  36. Is any Trump ad now a waste of money? Biden can not be the candidate (because of his dementia), unless the Dem establishment wants to lose.

Well sure. Trump is a genius, he’s totally the best, 100% perfect, 10 out of 10.
