Ted Cruz Self-Quarantines After Contact With Individual Later Diagnosed with Coronavirus

Erring on the side of caution:

Sen. Ted Cruz is quarantining himself after coming into contact 10 days ago with an attendee of the Conservative Political Action Committee conference who was later diagnosed with the coronavirus.

Cruz said in a Sunday statement he learned of the interaction with the since-infected man last night, but emphasized that he’s not experiencing symptoms and feels “fine and healthy.”

The Republican senator said his contact with the CPAC attendee was limited to “brief conversation and a handshake” at the Maryland event last month.

Health officials advised Cruz “that the odds of transmission from the other individual to me were extremely low” and his “brief interaction with the individual does not meet the CDC criteria for self-quarantine.”

Cruz added: “Nevertheless, out of an abundance of caution, and because of how frequently I interact with my constituents as a part of my job and to give everyone peace of mind, I have decided to remain at my home in Texas this week, until a full 14 days have passed since the CPAC interaction.”

You can read Sen. Cruz’s full statement here.

  1. Also, from AZ Congressman Paul Gosar today:

I am announcing that I, along with 3 of my senior staff, are officially under self-quarantine after sustained contact at CPAC with a person who has since been hospitalized with the Wuhan Virus. My office will be closed for the week.

  3. Ted looks a fit guy and should be OK. However, there are no guarantees in life and may him and the others who potentially have it recover soon.

In my own extended circle, I just found out about the first person who has come into contact with someone who is a confirmed carrier (I haven’t had any physical contact with anyone in this group). They’re younger than Ted and should be fine also, one hopes.

  11. Is 14 days enough time to quarantine? Not necessarily:

Current estimates of the incubation period range from 1 to 14 days with a median of 5 to 6 days, although recent case reports suggest that the incubation period may be as long as 24 days, which is longer than the 14 days that WHO and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been using to inform quarantine policies. A potentially longer incubation period has important implications for quarantine policies and prevention of spread. The virus appears to be transmitted primarily through large droplets, but it has also been found in stool and blood, raising questions about other potential modes of transmission.4 If confirmed that the virus can be spread by stool, then different types of precautions may be necessary. As with other coronaviruses, health care–associated transmission appears to be a major mode of infection, with one study suggesting that 41% of 138 cases were presumed to have been health care acquired.5

  12. Can’t verify it, but at least one Twitter user claims to be a military officer called up to active duty from reserve status because of his NBC (nuclear, biological chemical) skills; of course, that doesn’t prove elements from the United States or another foreign actor launched a plausibly deniable chemical attack in Wuhan by China’s top biosafety-level (4) lab, that it was a purposeful Chinese attack, that it was an accidental release of a biological agent by the Chinese, or similar. It could just be that the government is bringing all hands on deck to mitigate the effects of a naturally occurring virus.

    DEPLORABLE BIG O @os4185 · Mar 7
I just got a reserve call up due to my experience in nuclear biological and chemical warfare. I thought I was done but I took an oath and it has not expired. I report for duty next week. I also work in the Drug industry so I am sure that was a factor. My commision was activated.

I think it was an overreaction to the press foolishly promoting 2 cases in San Antonio when they were cruise passengers that were moved to the city.

It’s dumb. They need proper observation and medical attention till we determine what the stressors of this virus are.

If your mom gets the flu, she’s in trouble. So, it will depend on where this is by late April. Nobody knows enough now.

  28. @25 Of course she should decide, but every now and then she will heed my advice. 🙂

  31. Good point, Kevin. I recently reminded her to go and get a flu shot, which she did.

    norcal (a5428a)

  32. She could copiously use hand sanitizer during the few hours of the reception and not touch her eyes without first using said hand sanitizer. That should improve her odds greatly. Besides, the flu is probably still a bigger risk for the timebeing.

    Make America Ordered Again (23f793)

  33. @29 That is a positive point. I believe my mom has a healthy immune system from all those years as a middle-school teacher.

    norcal (a5428a)

  34. Or better yet, not touch her face without scrupulously using the sanitizer. For a few hours, that should be doable.

  37. Did they hold CPAC on a cruise ship?

I’m waiting for an outbreak at Mar-A-Lago. And the media’s orgasmic overreaction.

Seriously, this has got to be the lamest attempt at grandstanding in history.

And to think I donated $1000 to Ted Cruz. Never again.

  43. Following Ted Cruz’s lead:

Politico, the Washington Post, the Daily Beast, and Mother Jones have asked reporters who covered CPAC to self-quarantine and work remotely due to concerns that they may have been exposed to the novel coronavirus. Both the Post and Politico say they’ve taken measures to clean and sanitize public areas. The Post has asked employees who were at CPAC to self-quarantine for seven days. All newsrooms tell Washingtonian they’ve taken such measures out of an abundance of caution.
