S____ B___ Open Thread

[guest post by JVW]

I don’t want to run afoul of the NFL’s precious trademark, hence the arch title.

My thoughts haven’t changed over the past two years. Though this year I do plan to watch the game seeing as how a friend is throwing a party. Apart from the overblown interest in the contest, the conviviality of the event makes it tolerable.

As I type this very moment, Kansas City is an ever-so-slight favorite, and the line has remained relatively unchanged since it opened. It might be more fun this year to take one of the crazy proposition bets that are offered. For instance, you can get 14:1 odds betting that the game will go to overtime, or you can play a relatively safe bet and wager $90 to win $10 that there won’t be a safety in the first half, or $60 to win $10 that there won’t be a safety at any point in the game.

Use this post to discuss anything football related. Regardless of whether or not you watch, I hope you have an enjoyable Sunday.

  1. I’ll be rooting for torrential rain and a lightening storm that delays the game until tomorrow.

  3. Whoops, make that The Superb Owl

  4. There is no good reason for the Stupor Bowl to begin at 6:30 PM EST. It should start at 4:00 PM EST, making it 1:00 PM on the left coast.

  7. I love the S%#&* B@#!. Retail stores are empty, so I buy my socks and underwear for the year without having to deal with the crowds.

I want to give a very patronizing pat on the head to all of the people who are signing the change.org petition demanding that the Superb Owl (thanks harkin!) be moved to Saturday. Like the NFL would give up the opportunity to dominate sports coverage for both days of the weekend in order to accommodate fans who don’t want to go to work hungover on Monday. Good luck with that, guys. I think the same thing goes for why they won’t kick-off in the afternoon on the East Coast, and instead push it into the evening. Man, I hated that when I lived on the East Coast.

I went to 5:30 pm mass on SB Sunday last year, and the Monsignor stared at me and said, “What are you doing here?” Since the Rams were playing and since I’m in Los Angeles County, we had at best half the attendance for that mass as we usually have.

  10. Costco was a zoo yesterday.
I think SF is gonna win it. They can pressure Mahomes, and I don’t believe the Chiefs D can stop the run.

  12. Besides, there would be no time for the crucial Pre Pre Pre Pre-Game warmup show.

  13. Priority: I am counting Shakira and JLo’s halftime show and remarkable abs to keep me from overeating.

Party is here but I personally just want to see the commercials. And I will certainly snort in derision whenever some dumb announcer claims that the players on the field are “heroes” and “warriors”.

  14. “Beach Babes From Beyond” as well as “Nude Nuns With Big Guns” are free on demand on Tubi, if you want to spare yourselves Super Bowl commercials of a couple of lesbians peddling Alexa or some Goth teen watching a Boomer eat humous (like the little sh!ts invented it). Me, I have three Lucky Luke comics waiting for me since Thursday.

  17. This event is taking roughly 15 minutes away from my house, and I have absolutely no interest in it.

I do hope the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Board folks greased the correct palms to make sure the announcers make a point of how cold the weather is at the moment. Our low tonight is forecast to be in the upper 40s.

Is that with or without the wind chill factor, Kishnevi?

    nk (1d9030)

  19. Winds seem to be neglible, so no wind chill.

A quick check with Google says wind chill is not calculated if temperature is over 50 and wind speed is 3 mph or less.

  25. He does have to fight for Kansas more than for Missouri (which has fallen hard from its Gephardt swinginess), considering the slow motion NOVA turn from the KC suburbs. Will he back his dog Kobach or the more Gope approved congressman in the Senate race?

  34. I really can’t understand how his little off-kilter comments almost always ends up making his detractors look even worse:

That’s because they don’t. Most Americans do not like Trump. They think he’s dumb and dishonest. I doubt anyone actually considers this to be a thing except, of course, that Trump fans are thin skinned and so defensive they have to attack everybody all the time. Oh you laughed at Trump being stupid? You look EVEN WORSE NOW! What is that? That’s just a reflex on your part.

If Obama or some dreaded Bush dared make a silly error like not knowing where a football team played, the birthers who freaked out over that tan suit would be screeching for a month. Let’s not pretend Trump is some stoic pro that is above the fray when he’s also ranting about women bleeding from their “whatevers” when they ask Trump a tough question. The guy is petty and you can’t complain if someone returns the favor at an amusing moment.

  36. President Trump’s Super Bowl ad about criminal justice reform and Alice Johnson has been restricted on Twitter after angry Democrats reported it en masse

It seems to be available now.

This serves mainly to prove how the reporting system of YouTube and other social media can, and will be, abused – and not just against things put up by extremely prominent people.

He did pardon someone. It took Kim Kardashian’s intervention t get his attention, but he did it. He also (thanks mainly to Jared Kushner, whose father spent time in jail) got behind – and pushed through against the reluctance of Sen Mitch McConnell to take up the issue, the First Step Act.

Now he did not endorse the Michael Brown hoax and all the other stuff that Black Lives Matters – Many African Americans are not aware of the details or the details of what they push for like badly designed bail reform that only drug dealers would like, and which would not be so pouplar if discussed so this ad, or the YouTube version of it, was attacked

And the other objection is that he wants good only for United States citizens. And some of what else he’s doing is positively stupid. He sticks to his discrimination by citizenship. because there’s a lobby that watches him, and the same goes for judges, abortion and gun control.

With the kids signing “Born in the USA”, because as we all know (if you read Time or Newsweek) Latino kids born here are put in “cages” at the border.

    Munroe (dd6b64)

  39. “If Obama or some dreaded Bush dared make a silly error like not knowing where a football team played”

“57 states” was brought up as recently as last December in these very forums.

    Davethulhu (fab944)

  40. Trump also runs the risk of his efforts at addressing non-violent sentencing being conflated with the county DA driven justice reforms that are the purview of hard left (some say Soros-backed) District Attorneys such as Kim Foxx, Chas Boudin, some guy in Philly, and the ill-fated Bail reform movement in NY State. Tom Cotton and several others see this forest behind the shiny trees.

The Alice Marie Johnson story also reinforces the “cartel made me do it” mythology in the black community which while it applies to Johnson, is largely absent from the much more numerous impulse-control driven homicides and assaults recorded within the community.

    urbanleftbehind (5eecdb)

  41. Munroe – I thought it was more of a pointed way of Puerto Rico saying “yous are stuck with us, deal with it”, considering J-Lo and daughter unfurled a PR flag after the “Born in the USA” chorus. Notice how J-Lo messed around with dudes of nearly every race until she corraled Marc Anthony to give her 2 true Puerto Rican offspring.

    urbanleftbehind (5eecdb)

  42. “If Obama or some dreaded Bush dared make a silly error like not knowing where a football team played”

That’s in Trump’s favor not knowing that, in my opinion.
