Reported earlier this morning:

Julian Castro, the former Obama housing secretary and San Antonio mayor, has dropped out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The only Latino in the field, Castro established himself as one of the more progressive members in the primary race but had been struggling to raise money and fight his way back onto the debate stage.

This may yet turn out to be the Year of the Latino Voter, but it sure as heck ain’t gonna be the Year of the Latino Candidate, at least not on the donkey side of the ledger. Here’s a friendly reminder that despite their constant genuflecting at the twin idols of youth and diversity, the Democrats remain a party run by elderly white folks.

Belated wishes for a healthy and fruitful 2020.

  1. I suppose this means that the problems of transgender women seeking safe abortions will continue to go unaddressed.

Have you looked at McConnell lately? He’s nearly 78– but turtles do live long.

When it come to white meat, the GOP barnyard has more Foghorn Leghorns than spring chickens clucking about. 😉

  4. It’s looking more and more as if the primary election process should be outsourced to the PGA. The democrats have a bewildering series of fundraising deadlines (and I have the emails to support this) and in the end, the candidate with the most money is made to apologize for raising it. Wouldn’t it make more sense to simply declare the candidate (golfer) with the most money as the victor and move forward from there?

  8. It’s quite an accomplishment to be one of the more Progressive Democrats. Kind of like being the wackiest Stooge in the Howard family.

Who gets the Laraza vote now?

Probably Bernie Sanders. He was getting a lare percentage of the Latino vote in polls anyway, especially in California.

A day after his latest presidential debate, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders Friday night talked immigrant rights and economic justice to a raucous and diverse crowd in San Ysidro.

Sanders, a self-identified Democratic socialist, focused his 40-minute speech at San Ysidro High School on such goals as creating a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million unauthorized immigrants living in this country, restoring DACA protections for undocumented people who came to this country as children, stopping federal agents from separating children from parents and reversing other Trump administration policies he criticized as racist.

“What demagogues do is they pick a group of people … and kind of foment hatred against that group,” Sanders said. “Together we are going to move this country in a very different direction.

“We have some 11 million people, the overwhelming majority of whom are honest, hardworking people who are making a huge contribution to the American economy … and who came to this country to escape violence and to search for a better life for themselves and their children. This is not criminal.”

It is also not Socialist. Not only that, it’s…

…trickle down economics. But it’s true, and it works.

Goodness. You’re probably right. She sent out a pretty direct email message to her donors last night. Here it was:

    Dear JVW,

The FEC filing deadline is tomorrow, and if I don’t get an immediate infusion of cash then I will have to get out of the race.

I would prefer not to, of course, but without a lot more money it’s impossible to stay in. Politics should not be about the money but unfortunately it is.

A presidential campaign is not just a horse race, however; it’s a platform for ideas. Important ideas. In the words of Martin Luther King Jr., “Your life begins to end on the day you stop talking about things that matter.“ And we’ve been doing that.

Even more importantly, we’ve been heard. Last night I spoke in Fairfield, Iowa, at a place where another candidate had spoken the night before. I was told that he had twice as many people as we did, but what we had that he did not was a standing ovation. We get standing ovations regularly, people are hearing me who had not heard me before, and in many circles we’re only just beginning to be known. As long as we’re in the race, our ideas are out there and they‘re penetrating the political ethers.

If the natural flow of things is that I should just get out of the race now, I accept that. But I would rather not; there are still things that need to be said and people who are ready to hear them. In a very real way it’s not just my decision now. It’s a decision to be made by all of us.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your being with me on this journey means everything.

    With love,
    Marianne

If only we could figure out how to monetize standing ovations.

  17. It’s scary that this nutjob had so many jerkoffs giving her money in the first place. Enough to run a national campaign. Seriously: Scary!

As a Dem, I’m not happy about this, but it’s absolutely right. Probably because that group votes the most, no matter what.

  19. Julian Castro is endorsing Elizabeth Warren today.

Probably, I would guess, because she promised him more (in the way of endorsing legislation)

  22. Julian Castro was always close to Elizabeth Warren, so his endorsement was expected, but that;s not the same question as where his supporters or sympathizers (even if he was not their first choice) will go.
