French zoo blasts ‘stupidity and disrespect’ of visitors who scratched names into rhino’s back:

Officials at a French zoo on Wednesday condemned the “stupidity and disrespect” of visitors who scratched their names onto the back of a 35-year-old rhinoceros.

The Zoo de la Palmyre in Royan, located roughly 300 miles southeast of Paris, said in a statement on Facebook that they were “outraged” after the discovery of the names “Camille” and “Julien” on the back of a female rhino named Noëlle.

Zoo director Pierre Caille said the visitors used their fingernails to make the etching into a layer of dust, sand and dead skin on the animal’s back, AFP reported.

According to the San Diego Zoo, rhinos have thick skin that acts like protective plating but “is sensitive, as the blood vessels are close to the skin’s surface, and can be easily scarred.”

  1. I woulda thought their skin would be tougher.

I’m thinking that rhino that John Wayne fought with his truck in Hatari! Barely made it to the cemetery.

You guys ever gonna do a post on the NYTimes transition from ‘Trump Colluded!’ to ‘Everything In Capitalism/America is racist!’?

Or did you do one and I missed it?

  2. You can rest easy this time, nk:

“The animal may not even have realized,” Caille told AFP. “We quickly brushed the writing away and there was no harm to the animal.”

  3. You mean the 1619 Project, harkin? The story that Slate leaked, with the candid comments from Chief Editor Dean Baguette to the NYT staff that described the pivot and the reasons why? That story?

  4. I don’t read the NY Times, harkin, so I won’t be doing that post. Feel free to do it yourself in any Breaking News and Off-Topic Links post. Here is the most recent one and I will probably do a new one this weekend.

  5. It probably enjoyed it. Don’t rhinoceroses in the wild keep pet birds that do that for them?

  6. You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours?

    nk (dbc370)

  7. I think so. French birds named Camille and Julien.

  8. 4 – I already quoted it and added links in a previous thread. Guess no one cares.

Considering the Times says they plan to inject our racist past in sports/features/entertainment etc. reporting plus invade the public schools with study guides in pure, unadulterated agitprop you’d think it might be a bigger deal.

How do you say ‘wash me’ in french?

    Guess no one cares.

Because maybe this is a thread about a dirty rhinoceros?

  10. Here is your post, harkin.

    DRJ (15874d)

  11. Damn, dirty rhinos!

  12. Here is your post, harkin.

Who better than Sean Hannity to expose an “unbelievable level of bias” at a media organization?

    Dave (1bb933)

  13. The story has been all over Center-right media, well beyond Hannity. It’s somewhat surprising it hasn’t been mentioned once here, given the number of posts per day.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  14. Especially since the NYT’s stated goal is to use it as a cudgel against Republicans and Trump in the run- up to Nov-2020.

  15. 10 – nope, not my post – need something better.

  16. 14 – yep, after beating the Collusion drums for over two years and failing at the coup, they quickly pivoted to ‘Everyone to the left of Bernie, Liz and Joe is a racist alt-right Nazi and we’re not 100% sure about Joe. And oh yeah BRING ON DA RECESSION!

  18. 16… there will be doubters – see #17 – but if people can’t summon the energy and/or motivation to read the actual words spoken by Baquet that describes in detail what you’ve just summarized, accept that the dullards will always be with us.

  19. Harkin..sorry, the Conquistadors ended up bringing peonage to MesoAmericans and the Inquisition to everyone else.
And Jefferson ended up as a white supremacist defending slavery.

IOW, the Federalist isn’t what it used to be.

  20. It’s somewhat surprising it hasn’t been mentioned once here, given the number of posts per day.

I can do my small part to fix that, starting immediately.

    DRJ (15874d)

  21. Not a criticism of you, DRJ, just thought others would’ve heard tell of it.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  22. Of course it was. I’m going to take time off from posting. Enjoy.

    DRJ (15874d)

  23. You and harkin are free to be unhappy with what I decide to post about. I don’t take it personally because I don’t care what you think about me.

Fortunately for you both, the Internet is huge and there are thousands of places you can read content. There are also ways you can blog yourselves, plus I provide posts specifically to share breaking news and off-topic links for everyone to read and discuss. Apparently that isn’t enough for you and harkin, and that puzzles me, but I’m sure you will enjoy a little less of my content while I try to think about more ways to please Patterico’s readers and commenters.

    DRJ (15874d)

  24. Not fair, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman DRJ! You are punishing all of us for Haiku being “Gomer Pyle” (not Jim Nabors, Vincent D’Onofrio). And under the gentler, kinder commenting rules, we can’t let him know how we feel.

    nk (dbc370)

  25. My initial thought was to ask harkin not to comment on my posts since he has such a problem with my choice in content, and Haiku as well since he seems so confused by my choices.

But that seems like an overreaction so instead I will take time off to come up with another solution. I am a deliberate thinker so it will probably take me time to come up with something unless others want to offer suggestions. I welcome ideas that will provide more and better content, but I don’t welcome being told what to post on. If it doesn’t interest me, I am not going to waste my time on it.

    DRJ (15874d)

  26. By the way, Haiku, this is not a post for breaking news and off-topic links.

    DRJ (15874d)

  27. Again, not a criticism of you, you had come up with that breaking news/off topics post, which was a fantastic idea.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  28. Yes, got it. I was wondering why that was put in moderation. Have a better day.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  29. I dunno, DRJ. You can ban one commenter for saying “pooper”, and the other commenter, for whose sake you banned him, will flounce off because you said “Republican”.

May I suggest a Rickroll? Patterico used the Bugs Bunny “What a maroon” one for a while. You can use this one.

For example: Here you go, Haiku!
