Political Elections: Grifter Magnets

[guest post by Dana]

Definitely a sign that something has gone haywire in the universe: On the exact same day, two well-known scammers made public their intentions about a state and national election. First, from Florida, the infamous Laura Loomer has announced that she is running for Florida’s 21st Congressional District, a heavily Democratic district. She is followed by the infamous Michael Avenatti, who told reporters that he is once again considering entering the 2020 presidential race.

Because what America needs is a few more grifters in public office… Represent!

Anyway, about Loomer:

The far-right agitator Laura Loomer, whose inflammatory rhetoric and guerrilla-style activism have led to her ouster from major social media platforms and multiple encounters with police, has filed to run for a Democratic-leaning Palm Beach congressional seat that includes President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

Loomer, a 26-year-old blogger who has worked with the conspiracy website InfoWars and the controversial investigative outlet Project Veritas, is joining a packed field of Republican hopefuls seeking to unseat Democratic Rep. Lois Frankel in Florida’s 21st district, which covers most of Palm Beach County.

She launched her 2020 bid on Friday, according to Florida Election Commission records. Her campaign website states she is a resident of the district. Her statement of candidacy filed with the FEC lists a post office box in Fort Worth as her campaign’s primary address.

[…]

Loomer…has been banned from Facebook and Twitter for her incendiary commentary. She was banned from the ridesharing platforms Uber and Lyft in 2017 after unleashing an anti-Muslim tweetstorm following a terror attack in Manhattan that killed 8 people and injured 11…

She has been the subject of national news stories for reportedly jumping a fence at Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi’s home in California to stage an immigration protest and handcuffing herself to the front door of Twitter’s New York headquarters to call attention to her ban from the social media site.

Loomer has also ginned up controversy in Florida, targeting liberal lawmakers and activists — and sometimes diversity itself.

Interestingly:

A press release issued by her campaign…states that Karen Giorno, who led Trump’s 2016 campaign operations in Florida, will serve as the general consultant for Loomer’s campaign committee.

About Michael Avenatti:

Avenatti, who in the past represented porn star Stormy Daniels against the likes of President Donald Trump and his then fixer Michael Cohen, told CNBC late on Friday that he is yet again contemplating entering the expansive 2020 arena.

“Never say never,” he said when asked if he’s going to get into the race. “The Dems need a non-traditional fighter. They have a lot of talent but not a lot of fighters.” He later noted that the odds of him getting into the race are at 50/50 and he could make his decision in a few months.

“I don’t think I need to make a final decision for a number of months. I have the name ID and everyone knows I’m one of the few effective fighters that the Dems have,” he said.

[…]

“I am increasingly concerned that the Dems don’t have the right fighter to go toe to toe with Trump,” he said. “And the future of the republic and our way of life is on the line. He is a brawler who has no bounds. The Dems need a guy who can match him punch for punch. I may be that guy.”

Still, Avenatti said he has a “number of things to deal with” before deciding whether he will jump into the race.

Obviously, neither one of the characters stands a chance of actually winning an election. But still, I just can’t even.

  1. Of course this is likely just a play for Loomer to get back onto social media…

Avenatti: King Con. In his own eyes, anyway…

  2. But then again, America seems ok with these sorts holding political office…

  3. Obviously, neither one of the characters stands a chance of actually winning an election.

And yet we have a President of the United States named Donald Trump. I stopped saying ‘never’ a long time ago, because our civic society stopped making rational decisions a long time ago.

I’ll just say that Avennatti has a snowball’s chance to get the Dem nomination (in a field of 832 other candidates), but Loomer in Florida? Plausible.

  4. Glenn,

I know you’re right but I just can’t go there. Again.

    Anyway, Loomer has competition:

A total of five Republicans are running for Frankel’s seat, but the incumbent holds a staggering fundraising lead and faces no Democratic challengers as of yet.

Frankel reported having more than $1.1 million in cash on hand in the latest FEC reporting period. The candidate with the second highest cash-on-hand figure, Victor Da Rosa, reported $3,420. Loomer has yet to report campaign contributions, according to FEC records.

    Additionally:

Frankel, who has been in the House since 2012, didn’t even have a Republican challenger in 2018, and defeated her Republican opponent in 2016 by more than 27 percentage points.

  5. I hope so, Dana, but anything seems possible in Congress.

    DRJ (15874d)

  6. …and not just Congress, DRJ, as Trump reminds us. What the American people want no longer lines up with what must now be referred to as my antiquated views about a president and the presidency. Therefore, as Glenn said, anything is possible. See: Trump.

  10. When the king of Manhattan grifters occupies the Oval Office, you have to be a fool to write anyone else off out-of-hand.

Why do you think there are so many Dem presidential hopefuls? They look at Donald Trump and think to themselves, “If he can do it…”

    Gryph (08c844)

  11. but they vouched for david rivera, refusing to indict him for misrepresenting his income, and hence his taxes, how is it Chakrabarti is allowed to step down, instead of indicted for diversion of funds in Tennessee where the justice democrats were incorporated,

  14. What is it with the media and their love affair with Avenatti? His likeliest “term” will be around 17 years for bank fraud, tax fraud and mail fraud. The last time I bothered to read anything about him, he had been assigned a public defender because he could not afford a lawyer. Does CNBC think he can run for President from a prison cell in forma pauperis?

  16. Re # 2 – Dana (fdf131) — 8/3/2019 @ 12:33 pm – Most likely, neither Loomer nor Avenatti, will actually win their contest and take office.

Recall Al Sharpton ran for president as a candidate in the Democrat party in 2004. Although he claims to be a Baptist minister and a civil rights activist, he has a history of spewing hate, operating as a shakedown artist and not paying taxes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Sharpton#Barack_Obama
Orlando Patterson (a Jamaican born American historical and cultural sociologist) referred to Sharpton as a racial arsonist. Yet amazingly, Sharpton visited the Obama White House over 100 times http://www.theamericanmirror.com/white-house-visitor-logs-reveal-al-sharptons-visited-over-100-times-and-counting / and has been described as an adviser to President Obama and his go-to guy on issues of race. And in 2011 MSNBC gave him a nightly cable television show Politics Nation.
In 1991 Sharpton founded National Action Network and this year all the Democrat candidates for president have gone there to kiss his ring. https://nypost.com/2019/04/03/its-sad-to-see-2020-dems-kissing-sharptons-ring/

But then again, look at Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, and Ayanna Pressley – aka “The Squad” – they were elected and hold office.

And most thought Donald Trump never had a chance.

But when we ignore our founding principle of limited government and cut off the power of We The People (the House capped at 435 in 1911, population ~ 95,000,000 – today ~ 328,000,000; the Cal Assembly capped at 80 in 1862, population ~ 480,000 – today ~ 40,000,000; see THE ROLE OF THE MADISONIAN MACHINE (2008) bY Christopher M. Straw http://www.nyujlpp.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Straw-The-Role-of-Electoral-Accountability-in-the-Madisonian-Machine.pdf ) and create an oligarchy instead of a people’s legislature, with huge districts, where party and power dominate – anything is possible. 17. It escapes me how there was no big PR/Dominican vs. Black beef in NYC after the 1995 Freddie’s Fashion Mart attack; whilst the targeted business owner was Jewish I think most of the victims were hispanics.

Now see, this is a perfect example of Section 230. Were not for that section, davethulhu’s libel would implicate the host were it not taken down, but with Section 230, mr thulhu can libel away and only Patterico’s whim can stop him.
