Trump: “No Strategy” Behind My Attacks On Elijah Cummings

Filed under: General — Dana @ 2:00 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Here’s what President Trump said when asked by a reporter about his attacks on Elijah Cummings:

“There’s no strategy. I have no strategy. There’s zero strategy,” Trump said upon returning to the White House from a trip to Jamestown, Va.

“All it is is I’m pointing out facts,” he added. “The most unsafe city in our country is Baltimore.”

He repeated his assertion that Cummings, who represents parts of Baltimore, should use his power as House Oversight and Reform chairman to investigate the city’s use of federal funds.

Asked why he has focused his rage on Cummings instead of local leaders over the plight of Baltimore, Trump initially denied he was angry but later chastised the lawmaker for his fierce criticism of conditions at the southern border.

“I’m just telling you the facts,” Trump said. “I’m not angry at anybody. I’m just saying Elijah Cummings has been there for 26 years … he’s seen these mayors get thrown out, thrown out, thrown out. They’re all friends of his.”

And while an official in the administration echoed the president in saying that his attacks on Cummings aren’t part of a larger strategy, one wonders. Maybe it isn’t yet, but it’s easy to see it becoming just that:

Trump has said in the past day that he thinks his messaging about inner-cities is resonating and doesn’t appear swayed by the concerns of his advisers.

Trump claimed Tuesday morning while speaking to reporters that he was “helping himself” with voters when whether he feels he is alienating moderates with his tweets.

“No, I think I’m helping myself because I’m pointing out the tremendous corruption,” he said before departing the White House.

In spite of his attacks on Elijah Cummings, Trump insisted that he has received phone calls from a lot of African-Americans praising him for his comments on Baltimore:

“I’ve received more phone calls than I think on any other subject of people from Baltimore and other cities corruptly run by Democrats, thanking me for getting involved,” Trump told reporters outside the White House.

“Those people are living in hell in Baltimore. They’re largely African American,” he said. “You have a large African American population, and they really appreciate what I’m doing. And they’ve let me know it. They really appreciate it.”The president asserted again on Tuesday afternoon that he’d heard from “many” African Americans who called to thank him for bringing attention to Baltimore, but did not elaborate further.

Additionally, the president blamed “fake news” for a new Quinnipiac University poll that found 80 percent of black voters believe he is racist:

If the news reported it properly of all of the things I’ve done for African Americans… I think I’d do very well with the African Americans,” Trump said. “And I think I’m doing very well right now.”

Trump said referring to every single thing he’s ever said, done, whatever. Because…moron.

    Goes off to look….
If I am reading it right, he’s not far off when it comes to violent crime (Baltimore is Number 3, after St Louis and Detroit) but well behind the “leaders” in property crime rates (Albuquerque, Memphis, and Spokane). St Louis seems to be the worst when looking at them combined.

  6. Well, this is great. President Trump will apparently win 65% of the black vote next year and cruise to a 50-state reelection. He’s suggested as much with his declaration that “You have a large African American population, and they really appreciate what I’m doing. And they’ve let me know it. They really appreciate it.”

  7. Of course it’s a strategy.

  8. Uh… does anyone want to point out a problem with Trump’s statement?

“I’ve received more phone calls than I think on any other subject of people from Baltimore and other cities corruptly run by Democrats, thanking me for getting involved,”

Do people really call the White House thinking they can talk to the President?

Methinks he’s stretching the truth there a weee bit.

And St. Louis isn’t a true #1 as the city and county are separate entities. If you combine them, I’m not sure the St. Louis region would be in the top 10.

So, in reality, Baltimore is closer to the top.

  10. DSCA, if Black folks showed up just at the level of the Obama races, the Dems win in 2020 in a landslide. If Hispanics or Asians show up at even 2016 black levels, the Dems win in a landside.

Since only 60% of black folks showed up in 2016, and less than half of other minorities, that’s a massive voting block which tips toward the Dems. Of course, only a bit more white people bother to vote too. And that is just registered voters, not eligible voters. This is all literally the least you can do as a citizen, but the silent majority is the eligible and registered voters that just don’t, half just can’t be bothered. It’s a sad state of affairs.

    Colonel Klink (Ret) (6e7a1c)

  11. I’m just saying Elijah Cummings has been there for 26 years

    No, he hasn’t.

He’s been elected 13 times (and if this was his 13th term he would have served less than 1 year iof his 13th term, so it would 25 years as Sean Hannity had it) but he was first elected in a special election in April 1996. He’s been there just a little over 23 years.

Now who’s feeding Trump this information? (Trump really gains nothing by making it 26 years instead of 23 years, so it’s just an error on his part) Of course, Trump doesn’t check, or ask someone else to check.

And how well has any of this been researched?

he’s seen these mayors get thrown out, thrown out, thrown out. They’re all friends of his.”

Who knows if they were friends of his? It’s just a guess, maybe.

  13. is urban employment latino and african american, inproved over the miracle worker obama’s term, when he insisted no jobs would come back, but the press kissed his posterior so fervently they needed a shot of penicillin, he cried crocodile tears over youth who made stupid mistakes like michael brown and older like freddy gray, who was a predator in the community, decision that set those two cities ablaze, of course the journolist just smiled, and helped themselves to a shot of penicillin, the rizzotto tray that ran every word of copy by the clintons, were willing to continue this state of intentional decay, because it flattered their sensibilities,

    narciso (d1f714)

  14. Now there are problems with the mayors

    https://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/10/us/10baltimore.html

BALTIMORE — Mayor Sheila Dixon of Baltimore was indicted Friday, accused of stealing gift cards donated to the city for needy families and failing to report trips, fur coats and other luxuries paid for by a local developer who was her former boyfriend.

The indictment, which follows a nearly three-year state investigation, charges that from 2003, when she was City Council president, until shortly after she became the first woman to be elected mayor of Baltimore, in 2007, Ms. Dixon, a Democrat, committed perjury, theft, fraudulent misappropriation and misconduct in office.

She is charged with using at least $2,000 in donated gift cards for Target and Best Buy to buy a digital camcorder, a PlayStation 2, an Xbox 360 and other electronic devices for her personal use and failing to disclose her trips to New York, Chicago and other places with a prominent developer, Ronald H. Lipscomb…

So it looks like petty theft of what was supposed to be given to poor people, not her, and failing to realize that a trip counted as a gift, and even if she was dating someone she was required to report it – maybe restaurant meals too?

There were some accusations of politically biased investigators:

Before the state prosecutor began his investigation in 2006, Ms. Dixon and the entire City Council were the subject of a federal public corruption inquiry by United States Attorney Thomas DiBiagio, a Republican appointee who left office after memorandums publicly surfaced that seemed to indicate political bias against the Council, whose members were all Democrats. Mr. DiBiagio’s successor dropped the investigation.

But maybe he’s supposed to be biased.

    What happened?

A verdict was reached on December 1, 2009. Dixon was convicted on one count of misappropriation of gift cards. The jury was hung on one other count, and all others resulted in acquittal

They didn’t blame her (or find a criminal act) for the other things.

I guess she must have thought nobody knew about these gift cards. Or maybe how many there were. Whatever it was.

On January 6, 2010, as part of a plea agreement reached with prosecutors, Dixon announced that she was resigning as Mayor, effective February 4, 2010. Per the Baltimore city charter, City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake succeeded her. Under the terms of the agreement Dixon will get probation before judgment (PBJ) in the recent case where she had been found guilty, as well as in a perjury trial that had been scheduled for March, 2010. Under the Criminal Procedure Article, sec. 6-220 of the Annotated Code of Maryland,[28] a PBJ is not a conviction, thereby enabling her to keep her $83,000 pension.[29] Also, under Maryland law, a PBJ may be expunged from one’s record once the probationary period is over.

Dixon was sentenced to four years of probation under the terms of the agreement. She also will be required to donate $45,000 to the Bea Gaddy Foundation and to serve 500 hours of community service at Our Daily Bread. In addition, she has agreed to sell gifts she received from developers, including a fur coat and electronics that she purchased with gift cards. She agreed to not seek office in the city of Baltimore or state of Maryland during the term of her probation and she will not solicit or accept taxpayer money to pay her defense fees.[30][31]

In November 2012, Dixon was charged with violating the terms of her probation, for failure to make restitution payments to charity on schedule.[32] Dixon, however, made her full payments to charity and her probation was lifted after December 2012. [33]

Now what Elijah Cummings has to do with any of this, I don’t see.

You’re working class white, come home to your mortgaged split-level in Milwaukee from a long day at the brewery and crack a cold one; or leave your hard hat in your pick-up and hit the bar in Akron after your third shift at Firestone; or settle into your comfy chair with a Rolling Rock in your trailer outside Wheeling after a wet week on the river… flip on your TeeVee and see angry, affluent blacks in colorful garb with frizzy hairdos raging about race with the talking head crowd. I realize that many people simply don’t care that he routinely makes patently false statements to glorify himself or to bash those who don’t glorify him. Many people don’t care that the president has no real concern about truth vs. falsehood. But they act righteously offended if they think someone says something not entirely true about Trump.
