Philly Carjacker beaten to Death

Filed under: Crime — DRJ @ 8:00 am

[Headline from DRJ]

Man beaten to death after stealing car with 3 kids inside:

Police say a 25-year-old woman left her car running in front of New Star Pizza at 28th and Dauphin streets to visit her 25-year-old boyfriend inside, just after 9 p.m. While there, a 54-year-old man jumped in her car and took off with three kids still inside.

However, the carjacker hit a bit of a roadblock: He got stuck in traffic just a few blocks away. The woman’s boyfriend was able to catch up to the car and pull the thief out.

The suspect tried to run away, but Chief Inspector Scott Small said the boyfriend, who is the father of two of the children, was able to catch up to him again, this time a half-block away, leading to a fight. “Then other males from the neighborhood intervened and began punching and kicking the male who took the vehicle,” he said, “to the point where he was rendered unconscious.”

  3. Leaving 3 kids in a car with the motor running so 2/3 baby daddy and moms can get some alone time.

They should get a bit of a beating too.

  4. They should get a bit of a beating too.

At a minimum, Child Protective Services need to have a talk with mom.

  5. Karma for carjacker.
And yes, the woman needs a visit from CPS.

  6. It’s ghetto. “Do The Right Thing” neighborhood with a small shopping plaza where the pizza place is.

  7. Nevertheless, I think the boyfriend is in legal trouble based on the early reports that the perpetrator left the car and was running away.

  8. Beaten to death…

Now that’s Yankee Doodle progress, Philadelphia style; back in the day, they’d just hang a horse thief.

  11. No mention of race, but we all know – don’t we?

  12. I don’t know what race anyone is. The suspect has been identified. He had a lengthy criminal record.

  13. Well, they could charge manslaughter, but they won’t.

  14. Nevertheless, I think the boyfriend is in legal trouble based on the early reports that the perpetrator left the car and was running away.

If he only attempted to restrain a criminal, I doubt it. If he incited the mob’s actions, then maybe.

  15. The kidnapper was “running away” in the car with the three kids in it!

The woman’s boyfriend ran after Hood, who drove about half a block before getting stuck in traffic at 29th and York streets, officials said.

The kids’ father then pulled him out of the car and beat Hood as other bystanders in the area joined the attack, according to investigators.

He was rescuing his kids from a kidnapping which carries the death penalty under the Lindbergh Law. They should give him a medal.

  16. A happy ending.

  17. This guy probably had a long list of theft and assault victims in the same census tract, so they needed no special invitation to pile on.

  18. Really, I Google-imaged the place. “New Star Pizza, Philadelphia”, but I can’t make the link work. Outside the plaza, it’s a ghetto out of a Spike Lee movie.

  20. I’ve seen conflicting reports, nk, which is common with stories like this. One said the father pulled him from the car where he was beaten but another said the father pulled him from the car, they fought, the suspect ran away. The father caught him later and the beating occurred. To me, the difference matters. The first is defense of others, the second may not be.

    DRJ (15874d)

  21. Yes, the second would be second degree murder/voluntary manslaughter, and based on heat of passion not imperfect self-defense.

    nk (dbc370)

  22. Although “Anatomy Of A Murder” temporary insanity would be a perfect defense if Pennsylvania law allows it.

    nk (dbc370)

  23. Great book and movie.

    DRJ (15874d)

  24. Was it kishnevi who told us the origin of the temporary insanity defense here at Patterico’s a while back?

    nk (dbc370)

  25. It was.

    DRJ (15874d)

  26. Good memory, nk. I had to search.

    DRJ (15874d)

  27. Thank you for searching, DRJ. That was a lively thread.

  29. I don’t know what race anyone is.

I’ll help you. You decipher the race by the way “The American Pravda” writes the article:

    1. If the crowd had been a different race then the criminal, they would have said so.
    2. Since none of this was mentioned, we can assume everyone was of the same race.
    3. If the criminal had been white, they would’ve shown his picture or said so.
    4. Hence, it could only be black on black or Hispanic on Hispanic.
    5. Its in Philly – google demographics.
    6. Obvious conclusion.

BTW, White on black violence is always big news and racist. The opposite isn’t. Violence/Crime within racial groups is only newsworthy if its special. Like this.

  30. The neighborhood reaction:

Meanwhile, the neighborhood was abuzz Friday with conversation about the incident.

Maddalo said she was not surprised that some people thought the killing was justified. “There’s a lot of street justice in this area,” she said. “Crime’s not going to come down if people keep taking care of crime instead of letting the courts handle it. We’re becoming uncivilized.”

On Friday at 29th and York, where Hood was pulled from the car, and at 29th and Gordon, where he was fatally beaten, people had strong opinions about what happened and whether the “street justice” should be met with legal justice.

Antonio Williams, 44, and his son Yasir, 20, who were having breakfast Friday at Triple Joy Breakfast & Lunch, a restaurant next to the pizza shop, had differing reactions to the incident.

“I don’t think they should get charged, because he was trying to take somebody else’s kids,” said Yasir Williams. “They was protecting them kids. Say he did get the car, what would have happened to their kids? You never know, the kids could have died. You never know.”

“I can understand the parents being upset,” responded his father. “But everybody else, somebody’s going to get charged. I am not saying that they should, but somebody is going to get charged.”

Calvin V. Mack, 39, who was reading a book in the restaurant Friday morning, said the killers must be brought to justice. He saw the aftermath of the incident Thursday night, and asked people outside what had happened. He said they thought the victim deserved what he got, but he didn’t agree.

    DRJ (15874d)

  31. That sounds like the reaction people had here, rcocean. Maybe race doesn’t divide us that much.

    DRJ (15874d)

  32. But I know your point was about the media, not race.
