Nationwide Immigration Raids To Commence This Sunday

[guest post by Dana]

A few days ago we learned that the head of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Ken Cuccinelli followed up on President Trump’s warning and announced that ICE was ready to begin the postponed deportation process involving a vast number of individuals with pending removal orders.

Today, from the New York Times:

Nationwide raids to arrest thousands of members of undocumented families have been scheduled to begin Sunday, according to two current and one former homeland security officials, moving forward with a rapidly changing operation, the final details of which remain in flux. The operation, backed by President Trump, had been postponed, partly because of resistance among officials at his own immigration agency.

The raids, which will be conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement over multiple days, will include “collateral” deportations, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the preliminary stage of the operation. In those deportations, the authorities might detain immigrants who happened to be on the scene, even though they were not targets of the raids.

When possible, family members who are arrested together will be held in family detention centers in Texas and Pennsylvania. But because of space limitations, some might end up staying in hotel rooms until their travel documents can be prepared. ICE’s goal is to deport the families as quickly as possible.

The officials said ICE agents were targeting at least 2,000 immigrants who have been ordered deported — some as a result of their failure to appear in court — but who remain in the country illegally. The operation is expected to take place in at least 10 major cities.

[Ed. This administration continues to leak like a sieve.]

And in a surprise move, desperate candidate Beto O’Rourke presented his own unique brand of border control as he actively discouraged migrants from crossing the border into the U.S.:

The former Texas congressman was asked this week at roundtable event featuring immigrant and refugee participants to explain how President O’Rourke would fight white supremacy in the United States.

“I know this from my home state, Texas, places that formed the Confederacy, that this country was founded on white supremacy,” the poorly polling 2020 Democratic primary candidate responded.

He added, “And every single institution and structure that we have in this country still reflects the legacy of slavery and segregation and Jim Crow and suppression, even in our democracy.”

  1. We’ll see if Trump backs down as protests increase.

  2. Planned marches:

Protests are scheduled around the Philadelphia region on Friday, from Center City to Camden County, with others set in at least a score of communities around Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Demonstrations are planned in all 50 states and in 13 foreign countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Haiti, Israel, and Japan.

  3. Why do I think they won’t have planned out the logistics of this?

Robby O’Rourke just signaled that he is uninterested in running for statewide office in Texas. Look for the O’Rourke family to move to the West Coast sometime after his Presidential candidacy comes to an inglorious end.

  6. Agreed, JVW, and he will be a great success on the West Coast. He is everything California wants on their ‘leaders’. He will fit in beautifully.

  7. This administration continues to leak like a sieve.

The motive is political. What would be the point of doing it if they didn’t leak it? And it;s not like they have any places to detain people.

    Whc=ich sounds bigger?

“We are going to arrest a million thousands of people?

    OR

“We arrested 847 people on Sunday.”

  9. There’s something a kerfuffle going on in Manhattan Beach, California. A city councilwoman is organizing what she calls “a vigil” tomorrow evening near the Manhattan Beach Pier (a popular gathering spot, especially in summer months) in protest of detention camp policies. Because she is calling it a vigil, which makes it sound more spontaneous and organic, she requested and received a waiver of the usual $2,000 fee to reserve the location and pay for police protection and such, which would be assessed if this were considered instead to be a “rally.” The councilwoman insists the vigil will be nonpartisan and that there won’t be anything mentioned about immigration policy, but it’s not hard to imagine that people will come bearing anti-Trump signs and will engage in the various La Raza and Women’s March approved chants. Only one councilwoman (the wife of an ex-GOP state assemblyman) objected to what appears to be special treatment for a political cause, but she was outvoted.

I mean of course the good people of Manhattan Beach (average home value: $2.44 million) are up in arms about the treatment of border detainees. These are their future handymen, gardeners, and nannies (off the books, of course). It’s not as if any of these economic refugees will end up living in Manhattan Beach or sending their kids to the Manhattan Beach public school system.

  10. I’m under te impression that the majority of persons deported during Obama’s administration had already been ordered deported. To the extent that this is true, Trump is simply following Obama’s example – although I doubt that he will use that rationale in public

  11. Yell ICE at some major building sites and you’ve struck illegal gold.

  12. We have larger issues when the GOP house just voted to outsource jobs to Indians. These people!!!

  13. Oh wow, JVW, I hadn’t read about the Manhattan Beach crowd. It reminds me of when Malibu was up in arms about the same issue. Someone’s gotta clean those toilets and mow that lawn, and it sure isn’t gonna be me!

How clever of the councilwoman to understand the definition of “is” is always up for grabs…

I’m trying to figure out which Democratic candidate(s) Trump is looking to help with this.

It’s a Morton’s Fork. However it plays out, he thinks it helps him. He’s just trying to tangle the Democrats up in knots.

He’s trying to hurt all Democratic candidates, either with their base, or with (he thinks) the general public.

He basically pushing them to the left. He thinks he has something there, because they will take a position they are not willing to defend intellectually, but only emotionally or by evading or distorting the truth in some manner. If the Democrats cannot coherently argue for what they are for, he thinks he has the better of the argument.

He himself is distorting the truth in various ways but that doesn’t matter to him. If he gets to the point open criticism – he will reverse himself.
It’s like Kamala Harris versus Joe Biden on busing. Joe Biden can’t say why it was a terrible idea.

  15. Nancy Pelosi gives oractical advice – national Review thinks this is soemthing to use against Dems

    https://www.nationalreview.com/news/pelosi-advises-illegal-immigrants-on-how-to-avoid-ice/

    Sammy Finkelman (102c75)

  16. Pelosi is advising immigrants how to avoid ICE.

    Dana (bb0678)

  17. Ms. Pelosi should stick to giving advice on “rough sex” and “safe words” (full video). Without commenting on the validity of an ICE arrest warrant, if the police have a valid arrest warrant they can come and get you wherever you are, and search wherever you may be hiding, you, and the surrounding area within your control, without a separate search warrant. “Valid” being the key word.

    nk (dbc370)

  18. What does the law say about an elected official advising lawbreakers on how to avoid getting caught?

    Dana (bb0678)

  19. It’s malfeasance of office, legal malpratice, and incitement to (at the very least) commit a breach of the peace. In real terms, her advice could lead to situations in which ICE agents and deportees could get hurt. A mean prosecutor could find about half a dozen offenses to present to a court for an arrest warrant for Ms. Pelosi. 😉

  20. Paging nk:

[Re the immigration raids] Chicago’s new mayor Lori Lightfoot announces that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will be permanently banned from accessing @Chicago_Police databases, including the city’s gang database.
