CBS DFW — Cancer Vaccine Developed In North Texas Could Be ‘As Simple As A Flu Shot’:

CARROLLTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Tucked away in Carrollton, biotech company, Gradalis, could soon transform the way cancer is treated worldwide.

The cure could be about a simple as a flu vaccine.

The CBS 11 I-Team has been following the development of this clinical trial for more than a decade, and it’s now in the final stages of the Food and Drug Administration approval process, a place few drugs or clinical trials get to.

It sounds like immunotherapy, a recent trend in cancer treatment. Immunotherapy doesn’t work for everyone but this sounds promising.

The American Cancer Society has this fact page on immunotherapy.

UPDATE: Just when it was looking like a good day, DISASTER: Whataburger sells majority ownership stake to Chicago investment firm.

  1. All we need to do is elect Gropin’ Joe Biden and cancer will be cured just as sure as Jugears ended the rise of the seas.

  2. That was silly of Biden to say that. I know his son died of cancer and he surely cares about it, but he should have said he wants to promote and fund cancer research. In these politicized times it is not enough to say what your policy goals are. Instead, saying something grandiose is the ticket.

If it works, this is, or should be, a scandal.

That also includes keeping it out of the news, which would have pu pressure to accelerate this..

  4. DRJ @2. To some people, all you need is an infusion of money.

They somehow believe that, And intentions always work.

  5. This is great news for the medical field.
At this time – stool softness are my drug of choice!!

  6. @2. Well, he was put in charge of that ‘cancer moonshot’ thing so shoot-from-the-lip zeal is typical when he gets into his “let me tell ‘ya, folks” mode. But you’re absolutely right. Remember salesman Henry Jones pitching bicycles in ‘Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid’ ??? That’s JoeyBee in a nutshell: “Just a short presentation…”

  7. @5. Hope it works. Remember ‘cold fusion.’

  8. Wasn’t it John Edwards who also made a grandiose statement about curing cancer if the Kerry/Edwards ticket were elected?

It will be a great day when a cancer vaccine is available, because it will also shut up the nimrods who claim that big pharma and big medicine are colluding to purposely deny us a cure for cancer so that they can get rich treating it. I have grown really tired of that lame leftist trope.

  9. Drug companies must be getting scared after the phizer dementia treatment scandal.

  11. mg,

    Try this instead.

  12. The personal “vaccine” targeted to one’s particular run-away cells, has been a growing technique for several years. This is a PR stunt, not actual news. NEWS would be that the apparently-doomed patient had gone into remission. Color me cynical about this being some breakthrough. I’d be betting on a gullible reporter or a slow news day.

  13. If you live where there are Whataburgers, maybe you see this as disaster. If you live outside the South or Southwest, this means there will be Whataburgers near you in the future.

Of course, they could McDonaldize it, but many capitalists know better than to kill golden geese.

Having lived in SoCal for many years, I can actually compare Whataburgers to In-N-Out; In-N-Out’s burgers are better, but their fries and their shakes suck and always have. I rate it a draw overall.

But neither one of them compares to the best regular-priced burger stand: Fatburger. Also, SoCal only. Burgers, fries (skinny or fat), and shakes all are top-notch.

As for those premium priced places like Five Guys, well, the smugness takes away from the taste.

  14. The article is about Vigil, a product from Gradalis. There are many immunotherapy products in clinical trials and there are even some in use (I had one), but all clinical trials that show promise in Phase 3 are, IMO, important.

    DRJ (15874d)

  15. Just the same, it makes me wonder where they are in their financing rounds.

    Kevin M (21ca15)

  16. I am not a doctor but this dual approach is what strikes me as different about Vigil:

With gene modification, we specifically down-regulate an immunosuppressive pathway of the cancer cells; and at the same time, up-regulate an immune stimulation function of those same cells.

Most immunotherapy I’ve seen focuses on the down-regulation. The up-regulation of the immune system interests me. Cancer treatments can be very hard on the immune system.

    DRJ (15874d)

  17. Are you asking about the Whataburger financing and/or why they are selling? The article said they wanted to cash out to focus on their real estate investments and philanthrophy.

    DRJ (15874d)

  18. Noting that there is no single “flu” and “the” flu vaccine has to be updated because of that, I have to ask how much a single type of vaccine can combat all forms of cancer, given that *there is not a single form of cancer, but rather a whole family of cancers.

*Said based on my layman’s knowledge. If I am wrong, please speak up.
