[UPDATE 5/18/19: KOB has taken down this report but here is a link to the web archive version. My thanks to tmm for the link. — DRJ]

Woman travels from Canada to Albuquerque to get an Abortion:

She said she called at least 60 places all over Canada about abortion services. No one would see her because 24 weeks is considered too far along in the pregnancy.

Meanwhile, in a story Patterico posted on recently, Alabama abortion clinics vow to stay open despite ban.

  1. Anyone think it’d be exceedingly difficult for investigators to determine if an abortionist break this new law?

  2. If supreme court rules in favor of alabama abortion law it will infuriate democrats who will come out and vote in 2020. Just as republicans came out in 2016 after supreme court ruled in favor of gay marriage.

  4. And it appears to have been yanked from their site — their own internal links return a 404. Editorial discretion, I guess.

  5. Interesting. It appeared to be an exclusive. I wonder what happened.

  6. While Canadian law allows abortions at any time for any reason, Canadian doctors must follow professional guidelines which forbid abortions after 24 weeks unless significant danger to the health of the mother is evident. Up to then, it is generally free and no-fault. After that, a doctor can lose his license without a good reason.

Local ABQ station. New Mexico is like a number of states where there are a few populous liberal-leaning areas and the bulk of the state is “don’t tread on me.” The press/media is on the left as well, being centered in those areas.

  8. My guess is that some reporter had a poor grasp of the narrative, soon corrected by an editor.

  9. Here is the clinic, which performs abortions through the 32nd week.

  10. The report was fairly straightforward. The woman came to Albuquerque for an abortion she could not get in Canada. A Canadian group paid for her to go, and she did the interview because she said it was important to talk about the need for abortions. The reporter also got a quote from a pro-life source who said Albuquerque is known for late-term abortions.

The story is strange in the sense that someone wanted to talk about her literal and figurative journey, but it sounded real. Now I am wondering.

  11. New Mexico has no law regulating abortions. There was a pre-Roe law, but it wasn’t enforced and has now been repealed — one of a number of tasks the Democrats had after taking the Governor’s office in January. Others being gun control (most defeated by scared legislators) and joining the Electoral College Compact (which does nothing good for NM).

  12. It seems to be getting linked elsewhere by pro-life supporters like this. I did not read it as favoring one side of the issue or the other. That is one reason why I thought it was interesting.

  13. In New Mexico a 13yo girl can, in theory, get an abortion after the water has broken so long as the baby hasn’t crowned. But in actuality she has to at least claim to be 32 weeks or less.

    Kevin M (21ca15)

  14. It seems more likely to me that the station has doubts about the story.

    DRJ (15874d)

  15. Maybe they pulled the story because they don’t like the message it sent. But if late-term abortion is known to be available, why would this story be a problem? Isn’t it more likely they decided it might not be true and they want to be sure?

Of course, either way, they should post something to explain and not just disappear it.

    DRJ (15874d)

  16. It seems more likely to me that the station has doubts about the story.

Perhaps, but it IS TRUE that you cannot get an elective abortion in Canada after 24 weeks. The doctor would be subject to professional discipline.

    Kevin M (21ca15)

  17. I suspect that her claim of calling 60 places is bogus though. Someone that diligent would have acted sooner.

    Kevin M (21ca15)

  18. Frankly, the part of the story that puzzled me the most was that she tried 60 Canadian clinics. Who tries that many times when Canadian law prohibits late-term abortions? Did she think the 57th or 58th clinic might say Yes? If any part of the story made me doubt it, it was that.

    DRJ (15874d)

  19. So, if this was a scam … who scammed the media here? Pro-life, pro-choice, or just a celebrity seeker?

    DRJ (15874d)

  20. The Democrats are trying to make a big deal out of those crazy Republicans and their anti-woman laws. This went against the narrative, reminding people that there ARE bogeymen.

    Kevin M (21ca15)

  21. DRJ–

Canadian LAW does not prevent any abortions. The CMA and hospitals do. A doctor in Canada may not be forced to perform one, and he may opt out of even discussing it with a patient.

See here for the low-down (pdf)

    Kevin M (21ca15)

  22. If it was a scam, my money would be on the clinic, trying to get free advertising in the wake of all the other news.

    Kevin M (21ca15)

  23. Canadian LAW does not prevent any abortions.

Thanks. So not one Canadian clinic does voluntary late-term abortions, even though they can? Why do you think that is?

    DRJ (15874d)

  24. Canadian LAW does not prevent any abortions.

Thanks. So not one Canadian clinic does voluntary late-term abortions, even though they can? Why do you think that is?

    DRJ (15874d) — 5/17/2019 @ 2:48 pm

Because, obviously, it’s that *line* marking the discomfort of supporting abortion.

    whembly (fd57f6)

  25. One, the CMA forbids its members to perform an elective abortion after 24 weeks; Two, many hospitals have tighter rules. There’s a list of clinics in the PDF I linked to in #22, and their criteria.

Abortions for serious health issues or deformities are performed at any time they are necessary.

    Kevin M (21ca15)

  26. Sounds like a setup to me too. But I’m cynical.

I bet we soon see lots of bloody coat hangers lying around newspaper offices too.

So not one Canadian clinic does voluntary late-term abortions, even though they can?

no, they can’t. But it was outlawed without passing a law – by these professional groups.

So that’s teh way also to stop abortions in the United States if you want. Outlaw it the way uman cloning is outlawed.

  29. woman just arrested for giving a pro lifers sign a post natal abortion!

  31. ” Alabama abortion clinics vow to stay open despite ban. ”

That’s the whole point, isn’t it? Like the TN law banning textbooks and school employees from “teaching evolution” setting off the “Scopes Monkey Trial”. The legislature deliberately put out an overly rigorous law, the opposition found a substitute teacher who would “confess” to teaching the forbidden subject, perhaps, on the one day that year he had charge of a classroom — and the media circus was under way.

Either a state has the constitutional right to be different, within it’s scope, or it doesn’t. Setting educational standards, or defining the “age of consent”, or regulating tattoo parlors, or defining what equipment a “clinic” must maintain and qualifications a surgeon must hold … or it can’t do it.

You may wish to consider that there are any number of people who feel more than a little queasy about abortion, let alone late term abortion, who aren’t all that religious. Respect for life is not confined to the ecclesiastical domain. Plenty of humanists around who think the evidence of life does indeed mean life.

    Bellman (c5f2e6)

  33. #Me

D’oh my own comment. Duh. Pouncer said rigorous, not religious. My bad.

    Bellman (fc5c41)

  34. Abortion Toursim— we New Mexicans have been saying it for years. I’ve worked in the pro-life sphere most of my adult life and it’s shocking that Albuquerque is the late-term abortion capitol of western civilization. It’s hard to believe any doctor would want to perform late term abortions on viable babies.

This same abortion clinic is involved in lawsuits right now, including the case of a young woman who died in a botched abortion and the apparent coverup that preceded and followed her death. Southwestern Women’s Options should be shut down due to how dangerous it is for women.

  35. 33 unless they favor welfare after they are born (catholic church does when they are not chasing alter boys around) their concern is filthy rags as the bible says.
