Elected Official Bullies “Old White Lady” Peacefully Protesting, Calls For Her Address To Protest In Front Of Her Home

[guest post by Dana]

This is not OK .

Representative Bryan Sims (D-PA), an angry bigot, filmed himself harassing a private citizen whom he repeatedly referred to as an “old white lady” as she quietly exercised her legal right to protest in front of a Planned Parenthood. He posted the video of his bullying online in an effort to get supporters to make a donation to Planned Parenthood:

At the 4:30 mark, Sims asks viewers to let him know her address so he can protest in front of her home.

“Who would have thought that an old white lady would be out in front of a Planned Parenthood telling people what’s right for their bodies?” Sims said on camera. “Shame on you. Shame on you for hiding your face at the same time that you’re shaming other people.”

Sims continued, “Again, the same laws that protect me, protect you and that’s OK. You’re allowed to be out here. That doesn’t mean that you have a moral right to be out here. Shame on you. What you’re doing here is disgusting. This is wrong. You have no business being out here. … Disgusting.”

He also accused her of participating in a “racist act of judgement,” and presumed to speak for white people everywhere, saying, “If you’re a white person like I am, we have a lot of catching up to do. We have a lot to apologize for and I’m going to start by apologizing for this woman.”

A U.S. Representative, *and a male one at that, literally bullied a woman and told her that she had “no business” quietly protesting. Where is the outrage? How is this acceptable to anyone on any side of the aisle? Shouldn’t our elected officials be representing everyone, and not behaving like their own mini-police state? Shouldn’t those within his district demand better from him, knowing that the tables could easily be turned if the next elected official is a Republican? How would they feel about a Republican representative harassing a private citizen protesting outside of a gun show? And how is it remotely acceptable that an elected official is asking for a private citizen’s address in order to protest at her home? Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Sims has attempted to doxx private citizens:

In a video shared on his Facebook account on April 18, Sims approached a group of about five protesters he says had been “shaming young girls” in front of the entrance to Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania.

A female adult approached Sims and explained that they “are actually just here praying for the babies” before he offered $100 to anyone who can identify the girls within the group.

When a pro-life group tweeted about his antics, Sims responded with a dullard’s complete lack of self-awareness:

Untitled

In perusing the internet, I’m unable to find any notable Democrats (or Big Media) – those alleged defenders of women and the marginalized, pushing back on Sims and demanding an apology for his obvious harassment. But sure, wear the wrong hat and a smirk, and the outrage machine goes into overdrive.

This x 1,000:

I am extremely troubled by the fact that a man who is paid by our tax dollars feels it is appropriate to publicly shame one of those taxpayers just because he disagrees with her.

That everyone isn’t equally as troubled, is just as troubling as the elected official’s behavior.

  1. It’s always funny to me to see someone get so worked up over a woman quietly praying (while holding what appears to be a Rosary) because she believes abortion is morally wrong because innocent lives are being destroyed. Like, what does he think is an appropriate response to the practice?

  2. Wow, what a jerk.

Just to note, he’s a state rep for PA. Unless you pay PA taxes your tax money doesn’t support him.

  3. Whether one’s tax money supports him or not, should not change any expected standards of ethical and acceptable behavior from elected officials.

  4. Gay, LGBT activists are especially interested in pushing things out of the Overton window, especially anything based on the Bible or someone’s interprtation of it.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overton_window

The Overton window is the range of ideas tolerated in public discourse, also known as the window of discourse.

And no there’s no worry that it will make thins easier for Republicans, or conservatives, because when the pendulum swings very far on one side, it’s harder, not easier for it to go the other way.

Gun control is not a good example. Now if you mentioned an idea that other “progressives” supported, but he didn’t, then he might have second thoughts. Say he’s against packing the Suoreme Court, or a 70% income tax rate, a Hays Office for Faceook with power to ban indiscreet people for life, or a massive reparations for slavery. That’s where the slippery slope goes.

  7. Unfortunately, Mr. Sims has the right to be a$$hole and scream at people. I hope he gets shamed by getting primaried. The woman was brave for standing her ground and not walking away. I hope she comes back to that place.

  9. his Philadelphia district is so liberal that he ran unopposed in the general election; he had 2 opponents in his last primary, but who can say if they’d be any less opprobrious than him

  10. Y’know, it’s easy to find some State Rep acting beyond the pale. Here in Georgia, we had some MAGA hat loving idiots proposing a bill establishing a judicial ethics board.

    https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/04/politics/georgia-gop-regulate-press-bill/index.html

The Daily Show used to specialize in finding the occasional idiot legislator to bang up on, because we know one moron represents the multitudes.

This said — I am glad the guy is taking some heat. This said — I am also not despairing for the Republic because a state rep behaves like this.

  11. Even crazy people deserve representatives that share their values if they’ve banded together within a voting district of likeminded people.
I draw a line when they start insisting that their views be treated as mainstream just because they bought their way into a niche part in the drama. Crazy people tend to be good at drama because they’ve put in Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 HRS of deliberate practice by the time they finish Jr. High.

  15. Appalled-

I don’t despair for the Republic over this… but I do worry about the 90,000 or so people who live in Flint and had this guy in charge of the money ($100M) to replace their lead water pipes.
Guess what didn’t get done on time or on budget?

    steveg (e7a56b)

  16. Wow, he’s Gay. That’s shocking, I never would’ve thought that. Remember the guy who went to a Chick-fila and abused the girl taking the orders? He was Gay too.

I don’t want to say anything bigoted about Gay guys, but an unusually large number – small in nunbmer compared to the total Gay population – seem to be very *intense* when it comes to sexual/reproduction issues. CF: Andrew Sullivan and Palin and “Trig’s baby”.

  19. This is becoming the norm. And it’s not just small scale like this. Governor Cuomo of New York is threatening backs and financial firms that if they do business with the NRA, his regulators will make their life a nightmare.

The NRA is suing, but the state has billions to spend on defending it. I hope the NRA not only wins an injunction, but also damages. This is Jim Crow applied to gun owners.

  21. And the there’s the New York Yankees stopping playing Kate Smith’s rendition of “God Bless America” which they had been doing since Sept 11, because someone exposed the fact that she recorded two bad songs in the 1930s, one of which may have been a parody of how a white supremacist thinks. (and the other one had been in a movie)

So now Kate Smith, who recorded maybe 3,000 songs in her lifetime, is supposed to be associaed with that and using her implies endorsement of the viewpoint conveyed by those two songs. Which aren’t even cruel.

She was under contract and actually supported Civil Rights.

And then,if what someone did before the 1960s is determinative what aboutthe ball team which was late to use to black ballplayers?

  22. OT althouse noted how there was a Starbucks cup of coffee on “Game of Thrones”:

Then what about the television ad where a character – he was in some kind of public area speaking in front of the queen – broke through the screen, went into a movie theatre and out into the street and brought something (liquid?) back into the movie. I don’t know what. T

he product is alwasy suppposed to be the point of the commercial, but I had no idea what it was – I guess other people were familiar with it. Anybody know what it was?

  23. How bout this one:

“Lawyers are required to attend continuing legal education. During a recent ethics seminar, “The ‘Perfect’ Match: Selecting Clients for Successful Representation (Ethics),” Adam Kilgore, general counsel for the Mississippi Bar, offered the following hypothetical to a group of experienced civil and criminal lawyers.

A man has been fired from his job. He is upset. He hires you as his attorney. You are of the opinion he has an excellent case and file a complaint on his behalf. You later discover he possesses a permit to carry a firearm. He also has a so-called enhanced carry license. While his case is wending through the courts, your client goes to a public area outside his former workplace. He displays signs that say he has been wrongfully fired. The man has no history of criminal activity, violence, or threatening anyone.

The instructor asked the class what actions, if any, a lawyer should take. It seemed obvious to me there was no reason to do anything except proceed with the client’s case. I (Jude) would also advise my client to avoid confrontations with anyone who worked for his former employer and what he might consider saying if approached by the media.

While I was forming an answer, many lawyers immediately said they would terminate the attorney-client relationship and contact law enforcement to report their client was potentially dangerous. The only reason offered was his firearm permits.

I have to admit, I was flabbergasted, for several reasons. First, I live in Mississippi, which is among the reddest of the red states. Second, the attorneys—let me call them gun-phobic—were proposing to violate the attorney-client privilege, which establishes one of the most sacrosanct confidential relationships. (American Bar Association “Rule of Professional Conduct” 1.6). As with most things, there are exceptions. They generally pertain to a client who is about to commit a criminal act or engage in fraudulent behavior.”

  24. First, how many lawyers is many?
Second, it’s Mississippi. It did not ratify the 13th Amendment until 2013, among other things. Lawyers or not, they’re still Mississippians, IYKWIMAITYD.

    nk (9651fb)

  25. Was this a publicity stunt? Because he seems to be courting the wrong kind of publicity. Nobody looks good haranging little old ladies. Yes, he has a right to counter protest her protest, but come on, if this is the most protested planned parenthood in the country, surely he could have found a day when a significant protest was going on.

    Nic (896fdf)

  26. “First, how many lawyers is many?”

Not sure – I’m assuming enough to rattle the guy but one would rattle me.

As to the 13th Amendment, I guess they just transferred their craziness in another direction.

  27. That may also explains neighbor state’s Roy Moore still carrying a six-shooter wheel gun in 2017.

  28. We should liken Rep. Sims’ tactics to those used by the white nationalists who disrupted a holocaust remembrance ceremony in Arkansas. Sure, what the racists did wasn’t illegal, but they’re still a$$holes and bullies, just like Sims.

I suspect that a big factor in that silence will turn out to be that almost no one outside his district knows of his existence. I certainly never heard of him before.

  31. First off, why does PA even have 203 state rep districts (Sims is from the 182nd District) ? Hell, IL has only 118. Also his district is largely the center city CBD, Rittenhouse Square, the combo gayborhood/club and Steakhouse corner (Genos is in that district). Not so much of a unified electorate as perhaps an uninterested one.

  33. Black or white, gay or straight, male or female, democrat or republican – none of these is a determining factor for the a$$hats of this world.

    John B Boddie (66f464)

  34. I understand that he’s also an attorney, and as such, you’d think he would understand that these people had Constitutional rights to peacefully protest–what he did strikes me as a violation of those rights, as well as, perhaps, some kind of stalking or other similar law–not to mention that he’s just a jerk.

    Rochf (877dba)

  35. On his second action, offering money to get the names of minors so he can harass them.

I would think that is covered under bullying laws. He is using the internet to try to bully minor children. Offering money to do so is probably a separate charge.

You have freedom of speech, but you do not have the freedom to bully minors.

  37. Sims is a nasty piece of work. He assaults women. He seeks to dox teenagers. He is the new hero of the left. I would be surprised if any of MSM to take him to task. Twitter/Facebook/Google are only too happy to deplatform conservatives but will continue to support the call for violence by progressive thugs.
