SOTU Open Thread

Filed under: General — Dana @ 5:46 pm

[guest post by Dana]

Remember, there is no ceiling to just how nutty politics can get.

Kamala Harris has decided she will give a SOTU pre-buttal tonight:

“I’m delivering remarks tonight on Facebook Live ahead of the President’s State of the Union Address,” Harris said on Twitter. “It’s critical we speak truth to the American people during this inflection moment in our country’s history.”

Because a candidate can never waste an opportunity to promote themselves, am I right?!

Stacey Abrams, who lost the Georgia governor’s race last year, has been tapped to give the official Democratic response. Really? Someone who lost an important election is the most effective voice they have?

Also, Bernie Sanders announced he will be giving his own rebuttal via Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. But of course. Democrats are so not happy with him at the moment.

And in what appears to be perfectly dreadful timing when one considers a certain yearbook, the House Democratic Women’s Working Group has asked that female members of both parties wear white tonight as a symbol of solidarity. Not just white, but suffragette white.

As for Nancy Pelosi’s special guests tonight, you can read the list here.

As for President Trump’s special guests tonight, you can read the list here.

  5. Have not watched SOTU since about 2002, I think. Not watching tonight. And since Trump will presumably be reading from a staff written script, the speech won’t even have the entertainment value of a Trump rally.

    All 46 of them?

  89. Rub the Left’s nose in its anti-semitism.
I must admit that if anyobe can persuade me to vote for Trump, it’s the intersecting social justice folks.

    Kishnevi (2326a6)

  90. SMoD let us down.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  96. The SOTU is the gateway to hard politics, Haiku.

  103. @104. Next time, stream C-SPAN, Mr. Feet: the sewage they pipe in is raw and untreated.

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  107. They ought to play a selection of excerpts from that speech on every college campus, sort of an antidote to the steady diet of anti-American/anti-West horseschiff they are fed.”

It will take a lot more than that. I was watching a YouTube video on WW2 and there were plenty of comments that the kind-hearted and selfless Soviets won the war and the US came in late to mop up and steal the credit for capitalism.

    harkin (0e0056)

  108. After stalin sacrificed much of his officer corps than made a deal that allowed Germany to tear Poland in two

    Narciso (413bf2)

  109. I think he sacrificed half the Polish officer corps too

    harkin (0e0056)

  110. It’s actually post-Soviet Russian nationalist revisionism as well as Soviet-era “education”. Those comments on the YouTube video could very well be Russian bots. But the funniest was on Whackoffpedia: Who knew that the Czars used Cossacks to prevent pogroms against the Jews?

    nk (dbc370)

  111. They ought to play a selection of excerpts from that speech on every college campus, sort of an antidote to the steady diet of anti-American/anti-West horseschiff they are fed.

    Not at all.
Trump is, in a way, everything that is wrong with this country…

Remember that the Bible teaches that there is no such thing as a self-made man…that if God allows you to be financially prosperous, it is because He wants you to have the merit of helping your fellow human beings by using the results of that prosperity for their benefit and not your own.

    Kishnevi (2326a6)

  112. Lol it ain’t just Russian. Unless it’s bots wearing Che’ shirts and waving hammer and sickle flags at lefty protests.

    harkin (0e0056)

  113. That would seem unlikely, it was the okrana who pieced together the protocols though.

    Narciso (413bf2)

  114. I think he sacrificed half the Polish officer corps too

4,700 of them at Katyn forest alone. Including NCOs.

But did you know that when Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia so did Poland? To snatch the northeast quarter? Which may partly explain Chamberlain at Munich, Poland being Britain’s bud at the time.

History is only things that people agree happened.

    nk (dbc370)

  115. That’s different from the dem view, that all our efforts beling to the state, that was thrown at schultz last week

    Narciso (413bf2)

  116. “Talk about creepy; who are all those people crowded in behind Abrams?”

Fairly sound strategy to get behind a tank when you are unsure of the environment.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  117. We’ll grant that Chamberlain was stalling for time, it’s even possible in light of riebling tale at the Muller spy ring run by the Vatican, that Halifax wasnt totally a heal.

    Narciso (413bf2)

  118. “Remember that the Bible teaches that there is no such thing as a self-made man…that if God allows you to be financially prosperous, it is because He wants you to have the merit of helping your fellow human beings by using the results of that prosperity for their benefit and not your own.”

Don’t have time now, but I’ll quote something from the Bible that directly contradicts that in the morning, kishnevi.

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  119. history’s when you choose greatness and it could happen as soon as tomorrow

    happyfeet (28a91b)

  120. At 2.2 trillion, I dont think we can be much more generous.

    Narciso (413bf2)

  121. The 1000 Year Reich wore itself out on the Eastern front, and 16,000,000 Soviet subjects died because of the Great Patriotic War, not including those killed for being Jews by the Nazis and similar…if Hitler was defeated by blood, sweat, and tears, an enormous percentage of the blood spoke Russian.

    Kishnevi (2326a6)

  122. And stalin allowed much this to happen, one might even go further when the comintern attacked the social Democrats allowing Hitler to rise up from the ashes, instituting the holomodor gave him a foothold amongst the Ukrainians

    Narciso (413bf2)

  123. “Shouldn’t Democrats as well as Republicans rejoice that unemployment is at a generational low and that Black and Hispanic unemployment is at an historic low? Shouldn’t Democrats as well as Republicans rejoice that economic growth, well north of three percent, is at a level declared impossible under the anemic leadership of Barack Obama? Shouldn’t Democrats as well as Republicans rejoice that manufacturing is flooding back to the US? Shouldn’t Democrats as well as Republicans rejoice at the president’s attack on the regulatory state, the monstrous regime of Title IX fanatics, and other efforts to transform ‘the land of the free and the home of the brave’ into a safe-space chest-less pajama boys? Shouldn’t Democrats as well as Republicans rejoice that wages are rising, that inflation is stable, that the stock market is booming? Shouldn’t Democrats as well as Republicans rejoice that 2018 marked the first time in 46 years that that cost of prescription drugs dropped? Shouldn’t Democrats as well as Republicans rejoice that the president is endeavoring to rationalize our immigration policy and enforce our immigration laws? Shouldn’t Democrats as well as Republicans rejoice that the president has made historic inroads in negotiations with pariah states like North Korea and adversarial states like China? Shouldn’t Democrats as well as Republicans rejoice in his rebuilding and modernizing the US military? The answer to all these questions is ‘Yes, they should.’ But will they?”

I will await it with interest, since if any such Bible quote contradicts the rest of the Bible…

  139. I was misquoting Napoleon Bonaparte:

It must be admitted…it is most difficult to obtain absolute certainties for the purposes of history. Fortunately it is, in general, more a matter of mere curiosity than of real importance. … The truth of history, so much in request, to which every body eagerly appeals, is too often but a word. At the time of the events, during the heat of conflicting passions, it cannot exist; and if, at a later period, all parties are agreed respecting it, it is because those persons who were interested in the events, those who might be able to contradict what is asserted, are no more. What then is, generally speaking, the truth of history? A fable agreed upon. As it has been very ingeniously remarked, there are in these matters, two essential points, very distinct from each other: the positive facts, and the moral intentions. With respect to the positive facts, it would seem that they ought to be incontrovertible; yet you will not find two accounts agreeing together in relating the same fact: some have remained contested points to this day, and will ever remain so. With regard to moral intentions, how shall we judge of them, even admitting the candour of those who relate events? And what will be the case if the narrators be not sincere, or if they should be actuated by interest or passions? I have given an order, but who was able to read my thoughts, my real intentions? Yet every one will take up that order, and measure it according to his own scale, or adapt it to his own plans or system…. And then memoirs are digested, memoranda are written, witticisms and anecdotes are circulated; and of such materials is history composed.

  148. Well, I didn’t listen to the speech. Nothing an impotent orange lame duck has to say about anything is worth listening to.

I watched Inside the NFL on Showtime, the final episode, to see what real professionals and actual champions thought of the Super Bowl. Most complained it was a boring game, but to me it was a clinic on old school football. Defense wins championships.

It’s symbolic, if not emblematic, of the current situation. Here come the Rams, with their high-powered offense. There are the Patriots, with their more-experienced team. And what happened? Los Angeles could barely score a field goal, and New England won the game.

Bill Belichick is the winningest coach in NFL history, but if you ask him, he’ll tell you Tom Landry was the greatest. In fact, he modeled his Patriots after Landry’s Cowboys. He now joins Landry as the only other coach in Super Bowl history to hold his opponent to 3 points.

Trump is Los Angeles. Pelosi is New England. That may seem like an odd, inappropriate metaphor, but think about it. He is inexperienced. She is disciplined.

From what I’ve read, cultists are complaining that the Speaker didn’t show respect to the President, because she was reading and smiling while he spoke. But why should she show any respect to him, when he didn’t show any respect to her?

He came barging into the chamber before the Speaker announced him, as if it were his House. It’s not, and she knows it. Custom, courtesy and tradition are unknown to him–D’ohnald does not understand decorum. So Pelosi was like, okay, fine, talk on TV, I’m going to sit, read and smile–you wouldn’t even be here if I hadn’t invited you.

The Speaker of the House is a very powerful position. It doesn’t matter what the President says, thinks, wants, or believes. She knows he cannot pass any legislation without her agreement and approval.

What was she reading and smiling about while ignoring him? Oh, I don’t know, perhaps a status report on the vote count of her majority caucus, with side notes on additional votes from the minority caucus, with annotations of additional votes in the Senate. Followed by a list of the subpoenas about to be issued by the chairs of significant committees.

The incredible shrinking President, with low approval ratings and under multiple investigations, both political and criminal, with more to come. Who cares what he has to say about anything today? He’ll just say something else and contradictory tomorrow.

Trump kicked a field goal, much to the cheers of his fans. Pelosi scored a touchdown and won.

Millions of Russians died fighting TGPW, but how many less would have died, where would Hitler’s Eastern Front have been, had Stalin not murdered a good deal of his Officer corps? And lol at the millions all being victims of Germany. Early in the war young Russians faced guns both front and back, oftentimes themselves carrying sticks because there weren’t enough rifles to go around because Communist collectivism and industry was a failure.

And oh yeah btw, does anyone still dispute that Stalin killed more of his own countrymen than Hitler? Maybe all those folks they starved or sent to die in Siberia in the 30s could have helped keep the Wehrmacht from penetrating so far.

  161. GG: “Trump is LA; Pelosi is New England”

The SoTU is theater with very little tactical significance…and in the end, we still have divided government….with little policy agreement. Everything from here on out is positioning for 2020….the DEMs won’t let Trump do much….and they will put him on the defense with oversight. Trump will play the persecution card…and complain about DEM obstruction.

I don’t see the analogy. Trump is impeded…not because of some great DEM maneuvers or strategies…but because of his own personal foibles, his lack of policy depth, and the political dysfunction of our time. Though I’m not actually convinced that a President Cruz would be getting much more accomplished…though he certainly would be a far more persuasive policy ambassador and, with a good economy, he may not have lost the House in the midterms (they were a referendum on walls, tariffs, and tone).

Also, I just can’t square the analogy between Pelosi and the ultra-prepared and professional New England Patriots (love ’em or hate ’em). DEMs are not exactly shining….they are still crippled by identity politics, by not taking border security seriously, by hyper-focusing on redistribution and proposing to spend money that they have no chance of ever raising in revenues. They were utterly reprehensible in the Kavanaugh hearings…and continue to over-play the collusion meme. The DEM imagery and voices remain the only buoy for the GOP. Yesterday was just a reminder that we live in awfully petty times….

Ecclesiastes 2:20 – So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun.

2:21 – For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune.

2:24 – A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?

You picked a passage that teaches exactly what I said the Bible teaches…especially if you continue on a few verses. Solomon was pointing out the futility of trying to amass wealth, the fact that everything is provided by God, and that God ensures it goes where He wishes, no matter what we do.

Here are what I found to be the 3 most amazing statements from the State of the Union message:

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/02/05/us/politics/trump-state-of-union-speech-transcript.html (fuller, as delivered, buut also has commentary)`

If I had not been elected president of the United States, we would right now, in my opinion, be in a major war with North Korea

    AND

I want people to come into our country, in the largest numbers ever, but they have to come in legally.

Maybe he’d agree to that, but that’s not in any legislation he’s proposed. AND

The border city of El Paso, Texas, used to have extremely high rates of violent crime — one of the highest in the entire country, and considered one of our nation’s most dangerous cities. Now, immediately upon its building, with a powerful barrier in place, El Paso is one of the safest cities in our country. Simply put, walls work and walls save lives.

    Fact checking reveals:

    1. This wall he’s talking about was built between 2008 and 2010.

    2. There as wall by El Paso before.

    3. Crime hit aopeak in 1993 and was much lower by 2006 and didn’t really drop after the wall.

4? What wall protects Wisconsin from Chicago’s South Side?
