Ever Seen Anyone Tweet Through Clenched Teeth Before?

Filed under: General — JVW @ 2:06 pm

[guest post by JVW]

Behold.

I can’t wait to see the holiday greetings from Linda Sarsour, Ilhan Omar, and Louis Farrakhan.

As for me, I have no issue with wishing חנוכה שמח to the Jewish people all over the world.

  1. Notice how the socialist Corbyn recasts the Hanukkah story as being a message that “just enough can be plenty” rather than acknowledging that the Maccabees were revolting against an oppressive government that drove them from their lands and desecrated their holy temple?

    JVW (42615e)

  2. The Tories in Britain better seize on the Corbyn message that “just enough can be plenty” and make sure that becomes the unofficial slogan of British socialism and the Labour Party.

    JVW (42615e)

  3. But there’s never enough other peoples’ money…

  5. That’s a good point, Dave. I was considering “just enough” in the context of that is what socialists intend to leave the citizens with after they are done confiscating the rest. You have just enough money to pay for rent in public housing; you have just enough to pay for a metro transportation card to take the bus and subway; you have just enough to buy enough home-sourced organic food to have a 2,000 calorie daily diet; you have just enough to afford enough mindless entertainment to keep you occupied.

But you can also see “just enough” as the goal we should be aiming for in terms of funding government. Just enough so that they can keep the roads safe and navigable; just enough so we can have the best-trained and best-equipped military; just enough so we have well-functioning public schools that educate our youth. But as Mrs. Thatcher pointed out, with progressive government you never reach that point where everyone agrees you are spending just enough.

Except that Senator Sanders, as ridiculous a buffoon as he is, doesn’t strike me as a virulent anti-semite and apologist for political terrorism of all stripes, so long as it is directed against a Western capitalist government.

  9. Oy vey.

He’s from Islington. Spent nearly every Saturday morning back in the day w/t family at Camden Passage in Islington years before it got all yuppied up. You could find anything there then; $20 worth of loose American change for $5; thousand year old Roman coins for a dollar; boxes and boxes of naughty Victorian postcards [the likes of which Terry Gillam animated through Monty Python episodes;] ornate, gob-smacking jewelry; Old West Colt 45s at $125; nearly any old British military uniform; Ken Kearsley’s immaculate stamp and toy lead soldier stall… even kegs full of pristine Confederate uniform buttons -at 25 cents a piece- blockaded, lost and re-discovered in some old warehouse.

  15. Whereas the rest of us say it every day, and get no present.

    Life is so unfair.

  18. Aspie eye for details. Corbyn wishes “Jewish people” Happy Hannukah, as if he is only wishing some Jewish people a good holiday, and not others. His kind of Jews,
(Compare JVW’s use of the definite article, which is how most people do it.)

The eight days during which Jewish children wake up and say, “I hate Greeks and so does God”,

In fact the Greeks involved were not really Greek. Macedonians, pagans from Syria and Lebanon, the local pagan community, and most important Hellenizing Jews who were fine with living like the Gentiles. It’s not really fair to compare the Maccabees to the Taliban, but not it’s not unfair either. Perhaps the Puritans might be a good parallel.

And we are not taught to hate the Greeks.
It is the Romans who were responsible for genocide.

    nk (dbc370)

  23. Is that an orthodox thing. I thought the thing about the lords birth was how his humble circumstances punctuated his conflict with the pomp of this world

    Narciso (d1f714)

  24. Yes. St. Nicholas Day on December 6 is a festive holiday, for example. St. Spyridon Day on December begins the solemn period. Christmas is religious, no presents. January 1 is St. Basil Day and the Circumcision of Christ, that’s when presents are given and the Greeks go wild in the streets. January 6 is Epiphany, the Baptism of Christ by John the Baptist, not the Three Kings as I understand is the case with the Western denominatiso.

  26. Meanwhile, across the Channel:

There are parallels between what is happening in France and almost every other developed country, including Canada, as comfortable urban elites seek to impose their climate change agenda on a broader population just struggling to pay its bills and earn an honest buck. No amount of hand-wringing over the fate of the planet, be it by the IPCC or by the likes of Ms. Binoche, is going to resonate with people who do not feel the elites have their interests at heart.“

  37. @31. Google Camden Passage, Kevin; what is imaged today- the ‘yuppied up’ touristy sidewalk cafes, bistros and storefront facades- were not there back in the day. It was lesser known than the more popular Portobello Road/Petticoat Lane. People only went there early for the Saturday flea market. There was one ‘snack bar’ – literally little more than a hot plate, on the second floor of an old building, that served cheese sandwiches and tea on card tables for a few hours. Now it’s a more fashionable stop. Times change.

    And its on me

    Steve57 (624a5e)

  53. I say Happy Hanukkah, too, but the original Hanukkah story isn’t about “Choose Love”.

According to most modern scholars — and a few rabbis I called on to help me out — the story of Hanukkah is based on a historical conflict between the Maccabees and the Hellenized Jews, the former being religious zealots who lived in the hills of Judea and practiced an ancient form of guerrilla warfare, the latter being mostly city-dwelling assimilationists who ate pork, didn’t circumcise their male children and made the occasional sacrificial offering to pagan gods.
Some of the details are up for debate, depending on which texts you consult. But everyone agrees that the Maccabees won out in the end and imposed their version of Judaism on the formerly Hellenized Jews. So Hanukkah, in essence, commemorates the triumph of fundamentalism over cosmopolitanism. Our assimilationist answer to Christmas is really a holiday about subjugating assimilated Jews.

I wouldn’t light even one candle to celebrate that, let alone eight, but it’s their heritage.

Latkes or latkas (לאַטקע) are potato pancakes that Ashkenazi Jews have prepared as part of the Hanukkah festival since the mid-1800s, based on an older variant of the dish that goes back to at least the Middle Ages. Latkes need not necessarily be made from potatoes.

Suppose terrorist events in 1983 destroyed support for Solidarity, and the democarcy movement was rolled up with popular support. Then the Berlin Wall never falls and come 2003, Poland is still living under communism as a new generation seeks freedom.

Plus a number of subplots. The dubbing can wear at times, but the production values are good and it kept my interest.

  129. Nevertheless, insiders say Liberty is determined to execute its longer-term vision. Gaining control of iHeart would give Liberty a music 4-pack, as it already owns 71% of publicly listed SiriusXM Radio. Sirius in Sep agreed to buy streaming service Pandora Media. Liberty also owns 33% of listed Live Nation Entertainment, which owns Ticketmaster.

“A ticket to a Live Nation concert could have a code on it in case its holder wants to leave the concert early,” FBN Securities Rob Routh said, citing one hypothetical. “The ticketholder can then listen to the remainder of the concert on Sirius while driving home.”

  135. By the by; the eight presents for eight days thing is also a recent thing cooked up by wealthy New York Jews whose kids were getting jealous of their little friend’s Christmas presents. Apparently they needed something one-upsmanship to boast of.

The previous tradition was ‘Hanukkah gelt’ – an envelope with some spending money for the kids to go with the latkes, the sufganiot (jelly filled donut holes), and whatever they might win at dreidel, which if you check the rules requires the parents to freshen the pot pretty regularly.

(The Hanukkah gelt tradition arose out of a previous tradition where the parents would send their kid to Hebrew School with an envelope of money for the religious teacher or rabbi around Hanukkah time, and it morphed into giving some money to the kids too.)
