Fatal Hit and Run Driver Now Being Held By ICE

Filed under: Deport the Criminals First,General,Immigration — Patterico @ 7:03 am

Hit and run driver kills Michael Delaney May, and is now being held by ICE:

A pedestrian who authorities say was struck by a vehicle in Hays County on Saturday evening was found dead hours after the driver came into contact with a deputy and failed to report the crash, Texas Department of Public Safety officials said.

Michael Delaney May, 32, was found dead off the roadway on Goforth Road, DPS officials said. Troopers were called at 7:51 a.m. Sunday to investigate the incident, but investigators determined May had been hit the night before, DPS officials said.

The owner of a nearby Hays County business told troopers that his security cameras caught a partial glimpse of the crash, which DPS officials said helped them identify the hit-and-run suspect as 22-year-old Tony Ponce-Zamora.

Troopers tracked Ponce-Zamora down and detained him on Sunday after he admitted to driving the vehicle at the time of the crash and leaving the scene, DPS officials said.

Hays County sheriff’s officials said a deputy interacted with Ponce-Zamora the night before, but Ponce-Zamora failed to inform the officer about the crash.

. . . .

“Due to Ponce withholding this information, (May) was not given medical attention and died due to his injuries,” DPS officials said in a statement.

Ponce-Zamora is now in the Hays County Jail on a charge of fail to stop and render aid resulting in death and is being held on an ICE detainer and a $50,000 bail, records show.

Hays County is not far from Austin, which is trying to be a sanctuary city protecting people like Ponce-Zamora from the immigration officials who would deport him.

I doubt May’s story will get the national attention that was paid to the story of Kate Steinle, but May was a human being, like her and you and me.

    Indeed
OP .. Deport the Criminals First. Ponce-Zamora was a known criminal on Friday? Hit and Runs are especially tragic, when they result in death or injuries which could likely have been prevented had there been no running, but rather prompt assistance and medical attention rendered. One wonders whether part (or most or all) of what led to Ponce-Zamora’s failing to act as he ought to have resulting from his fears associated with a reveal of his immigration status. Fear causes so much unnecessary suffering and tragic in this world (in addition to preventing much suffering and injury as well, of course).

  4. When is a murderer a victim? Sounds like the definition of chutzpah. When a man kills both his parents and begs the court for mercy because he’s an orphan.

  5. Yes, blame the immigration laws for taking a powder after running over a guy instead of seeking help…..smh.

If your ‘immigration status’ (aka entering the country legally aka known criminal) is more important than saving a life, seek a new set of values.

  6. Q, aren’t you assuming Ponce was not at fault in hitting May? If Ponce was afraid of being deported, he would also be afraid of facing possible consequences for the hitting a pedestrian. Some people don’t care about anyone but themselves. I think that is especially true of Ponce:

Hays County sheriff’s officials said a deputy interacted with Ponce-Zamora the night before, but Ponce-Zamora failed to inform the officer about the crash.

The deputy came into contact with Ponce-Zamora on Saturday evening after his vehicle ran off the road and got stuck in the mud, officials said. Sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Todd Rife said the location where the deputy found Ponce-Zamora was “in close proximity” to where May’s body was found the next day.

At what point does fear for self become love for self?

  7. Read that again. Ponce was stuck in the mud at the accident and a deputy helped him. Ponce could have said something then, when it might have saved May’s life, but he didn’t. Help was there for May and for Ponce, but Ponce only cared about himself.

    DRJ (46c88f)

  8. If the deputy helped Ponce get out of the mud and then left Ponce, we can safely assume Ponce wasn’t DWI

  9. Did Ponce-Zamora actually say what Q! said, or is Q! just speculating about what was in Ponce-Zamora’s mind, giving us the liberal party line?

  11. Fleeing the scene of a crime because you don’t want to be caught for your crime of entering the country illegally is not an excuse. I’d throw out a wild guess and say that the deputy probably was aware that Ponce was here illegally but wasn’t going to enforce federal law because a car was stuck… in other words he was cut a break and repaid the country that was giving him opportunity by letting one of its citizens die at his hands alone in a muddy ditch

  12. @6 DRJ Q, aren’t you assuming Ponce was not at fault in hitting May? If Ponce was afraid of being deported, he would also be afraid of facing possible consequences for the hitting a pedestrian. Some people don’t care about anyone but themselves. I think that is especially true of Ponce:

No, I’m not at all assuming that Ponce was not at fault in hitting May. He very well may have been, and egregiously so, or he may have been blameless. I just do not know. And yes, I certainly agree that he might well have acted exactly as he did, had he been born in Austin. He may generally be wreck of a man, morally, where his “running” was wholly typical, or his failure to act morally and legally may have resulted from a lapse in an otherwise reasonably intact character, which was broken by fear (whatever the causes or components of that fear) last Saturday. That was part of my point. Fear can be a unbidden and unwanted destroyer. This is not news or a profound insight, I grant you. But it’s worth remembering from time to time. imo.

  13. “I’d throw out a wild guess and say that the deputy probably was aware that Ponce was here illegally but wasn’t going to enforce federal law because a car was stuck…”

    This is an absolute possibility.

I live part of the year on a small ranch in the Great Basin. The local cops are overwhelmed with illegals and let many slide for small offenses. I once watched at the local DMV where a sympathetic clerk walked a Mexican woman through her driving exam, repeatedly giving her second and third guesses after answering test questions incorrectly.

  14. Fear can be a destroyer but it shouldn’t be an excuse for letting someone die.

Indeed. Well, at least in a scenario like this (whatever the precise particulars, here). As to other circumstances, of course, the devil’s almost always in the details.
