Mike Cernovich and Gateway Pundit Publish Fake News About Shooter

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:58 am

A Gateway Pundit post on the recent shooting at a gamer gathering accused the shooter of being hostile to Trump. The post was bullshit pushed by Mike Cernovich and has been washed away. The person they accused has since posted that he is not the shooter.

The post bears the URL https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2018/08/jacksonville-shooter-was-member-of-anti-trump-resistance-referred-to-trump-supporters-at-trumptards-murdered-4-people/. No hint of the original post remains, save an UPDATE at the bottom:

UPDATE: An anonymous Reddit user was mis-identified in an earlier post.

This is what Gateway Pundit does when one of its breathless posts turns out to be an utter fabrication. Fortunately, one of those sites that scrapes content reproduced the post and I took a screenshot:

Screen Shot 2018-08-28 at 7.09.10 AM

One of our commenters who inhabits the fever swamps (the same commenter who repeated the falsehoods about my friend Henry Kerner) fell for this. So I figured I would perform a public service by correcting it, and mocking the Cernoviches and Gateway Pundits of the world.

By the way, Kelli Ward is on a bus tour with Mike Cernovich. That’s pretty much all you need to know about that garbage candidate.

  9. Also I notice that you guys like to sneer at the Ace of Spades crew a lot, but highlighting cases of SHOUT THE LIE, WHISPER THE RETRACTION is like a running theme over there whenever the greater news media falls prey to(oh, who are we kidding, pushes as fact during prime time and whispers retractions during the wee hours of the morning, never deleting the original posts) fake stories that benefit their candidates.

Nice to see something to occupy your time more worthy than polishing McCain’s tombstone, at least. Good job going after Cernovich after the media already memory-holed the shooter for being Too Jewish To Count as an Example Of The White Killers Which Plague Us All and kicked the headline off all of its front pages, this sense of timing and up-to-the-minute relevance is exactly what the voters were asking for.

Couldn’t blame it on trump, as someone was blamed on Tucson, for something outside her control, they try so hard for a Hungerford or dunblane, or port Arthur, catalytic event, one is suspicious as with the vegas shooter, when they couldn’t come up with a motive, you could blame video games, but madden isn’t a particularly violent one,

  12. Steppe Nomad, Deleting the mistake makes it appear that a mistake didn’t happen, and is therefore deceptive. An update or correction should be prominent in the article. Retracting an entire story should also include an explanation for how the mistake was made and how similar mistakes will be prevented in the future.

Do you have a link for what “the media” deleted? I didn’t see the article you’re referencing and would like to read it.

Also, since when did this site become a fan of the media? You seem to be really angry and lashing out blindly. Maybe you need a new hobby?

  13. I was disappointed too, Dave, normally even extremely Hispanic people get the full Aryanwash after a shooting, and after they lavished so much attention on slandering George Zimmerman as ‘white’ they could have at least thrown in a swipe at the fact that this one was an AshkeNAZI.

  15. SN, The CNN coverage seems 100% focused on the shooter having a history of mental instability. Spend all of 5 minutes looking into it.

I’m not sure what your point is. Do you want the media to make the shooters religion a major part of the story?

    Time123 (797615)

  16. “Do you have a link for what “the media” deleted? I didn’t see the article you’re referencing and would like to read it.”

    Literally just now:

“Here’s some possible reasons the public doesn’t trust the media any longer: leftwing media outlets lying about the reasons two FoxNews reporters recently departed, and CNN refusing to correct its July 27th #FakeNews report that Michael Cohen would testify that Trump knew about the Trump Jr. meeting beforehand, despite their primary source, Cohen lawyer (and Russian oligarch personal foreign agent) Lanny Davis saying that he was wrong to claim that.

The leftwing media credits itself as being heroic and capable — until the question of their own failures come up. Then they claim to be as helpless as kittens over their own fates.”

  17. Speaking of purveyors of fake news, Buzzfeed has a piecetitled:

Michael D. Moore is also a convicted felon.

    Paul Montagu (e7d63b)

  18. “SN, The CNN coverage seems 100% focused on the shooter having a history of mental instability.”

In other words, they’re not flooding the zone with anti-gun propaganda, they’re not speculating darkly on the race of the shooter, and they’re not pushing it into the next day’s news cycle, nor even headlineing it anymore.

Some races get fairer treatment than others!

  33. This actually sounds about right for TruePundit.

Notes: True Pundit occasionally publishes a legitimate story, some are conspiracies. This source also currently delivers news straight from the Daily Caller which has a strong right-wing bias. Most articles from True Pundit have anonymous authors. This source has also been flagged for false information and has an unproven claim. Simply not trustworthy. (10/4/2016) Update (6/19/2017)

Same for Gateway Pundit, categorized as a “questionable source”:

In review, The Gateway Pundit demonstrates extreme right wing bias in story selection that always favors the right and denigrates the left. There is significant use of loaded emotional language in headlines such as this: President Trump RIPS INTO Peter Strzok After He’s Fired – Calls For Hillary ‘Sham Investigation’ to be ‘Properly Redone’. The Gateway Pundit is also fiercely dedicated to the promotion of Donald Trump. TGP always sources their information, but sometimes utilizes questionable sources such as Breitbart and Mike Cernovich, who both a have terrible track records with fact checkers.
The Gateway Pundit has published numerous false or conspiracy stories such as Hillary Clinton having a seizure, identifying an innocent person in the Las Vegas mass shooting and again identifying the wrong person after the motor vehicle homicide at the White Supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Further, TGP claimed the “FBI received tips well in advance of the Florida school shooting and decided, for whatever reason, not to act.” Finally, based on publishing false information, TGP has faced lawsuits for defamation and damages to innocent individuals.

And same for Cernovich, categorized as a “questionable source”:

In review, Cerno publishes articles with sensational headlines and sometimes uses videos to promote propaganda by using loaded language:“EXCLUSIVE: Man Featured In Viral Video Getting His MAGA Hat Stolen By A Snowflake Is Pursuing Legal Action”. However, occasionally Cerno quotes credible sources such as the Miami Herald, but again with sensational headlines: “Socialism Sucks: Venezuelan Female Teachers and Doctors Turn to Prostitution to Survive.” Mike Cernovich has also been credited with a Pants on Fire claim via Politifact. Overall, we rate CERNO Questionable based on extreme right wing editorial bias, promotion of propaganda and a Pants of Fire claim via a credible fact checker. (M. Huitsing 10/19/2017)

  34. Sorry, ‘Time123’, I can’t seem to hear very well when shameless shills keep fishing for HATEquotes long after the clarification. Anyway, to get the thread back on track, do you think there’s a media conspiracy to lie about school gun deaths?

Criminal risk factors, how do they even work?

It’s not a real criminal risk factor.

Well, maybe it is in one way. The murderer of Mollie Tibbets said he killed her (actually claims he doesn’t remember the actual crime but that’s what triggered it he says, and he remembewred from the point where her body was in his car trunk and he told police where her body could be found) when she said she would call the police.

He maybe had much more to fear from the police than other people. It’s sort of like going all out to catch a speeder and then saying: you see how bad speeders are? We must redouble our efforts to chase after speeders!”

“(according to his lawyer the Iowa killer actually isn’t. And of course that is all that counts?)”

Slowly and inexorably disemploying the immigration lawyers who effectively launder cartel money by transferring the cost of taking care of their mules onto the US Federal Government is one of the sweetest and most deserved elements of the Trump revolution.

This is not what most illegal immigrants are.

And a mule would be someone who crosses the border “legally” – most likely a U.S. citizen – because if he avoids inspection, what is the benefit to the smuggler of seceting illegal drugs on his person?

I know the picture you have – they’ll send people across with drugs on their person. Those who get caught will be the only guilty person. But, although the Border Patrol searches literally every person they encounter who crossed illegally for drugs, they’re not finding it.

The connection of drug smugglers with the migrants is like this: They are a diversion.

    https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/smugglers-flood-border-with-migrants-to-divert-security-forces-from-drug-interdiction

Smugglers flood border with migrants to divert security forces from drug interdiction

But the crime organizations are not just moving people to make a few thousand dollars each time. They’re moving human cargo because they’ve discovered how to leverage that operation in a way that helps ensure the success of their real money-maker, drug smuggling. ..

…Because federal law says all illegal immigrants must be apprehended and processed by Border Patrol, the surge this spring has forced agents and other resources to be diverted to regions where illegal crossings are most common, and this allows drug cartels to move their narcotics through spots that are left unguarded….

the drug gangs aren’t stupid. Policy is. Or maybe policy isn’t so stupid, it’s just corrupt.

  47. Another day, another Trump tweet that gets fact-checked. This time, Trump got his “information” from some gal at PJ Media and not Fox & Friends or Hoft or Cernovich.

  48. Rush Limbaugh said there were some anti-Trump stories on CNN that were’t true.

    1) He says Dan Coats was in fact consulted before John Brennan’s security clearance was revoked. (it does seem to have surprised him, but apparently then Trump allowed him to weigh in)

    2) Michael Cohen is not going to say that Donald Trump knew of the Trump Tower meeting in advance. Lanny Davis now claims he is the source, but CNN says it had other sources.

    https://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2018/08/28/cnn-stands-by-story-lanny-davis-admits-is-a-lie/

CNN, even though its sources have recanted the story, CNN’s still running it. CNN will not pull it. CNN’s still running these stories that Trump knew of the Trump Tower meeting before it happened and was okay with it, which Lanny Davis says now Michael Cohen didn’t know and didn’t say that he was the source for it, and it was wrong. And that Trump knew about the WikiLeaks emails, the Podesta emails before WikiLeaks published them.

All that’s been walked back. But CNN is sticking with their story. And everybody’s trying to figure out why. Does CNN have sources beyond Lanny Davis and Michael Cohen for these allegations? If not, why will they not retract it?

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

  49. CNN is saying that they had more than one source, so they’re not changing their story, and they’re saying that Lanny Davis changed his story. My guess is that, if they were to stand by their report, CNN went back to their other source (or sources) and reconfirmed.

    Paul Montagu (e7d63b)

  50. I love the Israeli Defense Force.

Also, MUCH LIKE THE FBI LAUNDERED THE REPORT TO THE FISA COURT:

“Actually, disturbing, more like, given the history.”

“The Germanic root is cousin to the Latin term whence the Spanish term mestizo and French term métis originate.”

Also it sounds more Yiddishy than anything else and we have yet to come up with an equally euphonic ALL-AMERICAN equivalent.

Now if we want to talk about actually disturbing things that concern citizens of this country(and this century,) have you considered that Mollie Tibbits might not have called the police on her stalker because she was afraid of being Internet Mobbed for Incorrect Racial Actions, like Justine Sacco? She would have been definitely online enough to catch the hot new journalistic push-memes:

    https://preview.ibb.co/cqFVLz/Untitled.png

Again, just clear this up for me: is distributed and colluded viral racial hatred among journalists causing people to not call the police on actually dangerous stalkers MORE or LESS dangerous to the Republic than anything that TruePundit ever did? Or Russia, for that matter?

My guess is that, if they were to stand by their report, CNN went back to their other source (or sources) and reconfirmed

My guess is that what we have here is a Klinton Konspiracy to lie.

I think indeed there was was more than one source (after all, that is Carl Bernstein’s Watergate rule) and it is all lies designed to bias the public and anchor people to “Democrats good, and Trump guilty of everything and anything” narrative, no matter how prima facie improbable some of it might be. I mean here you had the Michael Cohen trip to Prague to meet with Russians about hacking claim back again.

And when it threatened to become unraveled too quickly, because Michael Cohen is not going to testify to any of these things, Lanny Davis took full responsibility, but he knos this was part of a larger plan to lie..

There was actually something going on with Russia, just not what they are trying to make people believe.

In the middle of this article:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/27/us/politics/bruce-ohr-trump-justice-department.html

But Mr. Ohr, 56, is far from corrupt, friends and former colleagues said. An experienced law enforcement official, he has a deep understanding of the underworld of Russian organized crime, they said, including raising concerns about at least one oligarch whose name has resurfaced amid the scrutiny of contacts between Trump associates and Russia.

As part of this work, Mr. Ohr met a British spy who specialized in Russia, Christopher Steele, and the two men developed a bond based on their shared expertise. Mr. Steele went on to investigate ties between Mr. Trump and Russia for the same research firm, Fusion GPS, where Ms. Ohr was a contractor….

…In 2006, Mr. Ohr was part of a group of government officials who revoked the visa of Oleg Deripaska, a Russian billionaire and aluminum magnate. Officials were concerned that Mr. Deripaska might try to come to the United States to launder illicit profits through real estate, a former law enforcement official said.

Mr. Deripaska, a close ally of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, has been tied to the former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who was convicted last week of tax and bank fraud. In 2016, Mr. Manafort offered private campaign briefings to Mr. Deripaska, raising concerns about the prospect of Russians wielding influence inside the White House. In April, the United States imposed sanctions on Mr. Deripaska.

And we still don’t know what exactly the Russian hopes and dreams for Paul Manafort were and who really got him the job.

They also tried to infiltrate McCain’s campaign maybe:

    https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/08/john-mccains-epiphany-about-paul- manafort/568600/

One of John McCain’s mistakes, which he would belatedly rectify, was a relationship with the just-convicted lobbyist Paul Manafort. It was really more of an association….Best I can tell, Paul Manafort viewed McCain’s 2008 campaign as an easy mark….

…This story is fully told in an outstanding investigative piece, published by The Nation.

What The Nation described is a sort of tangled relationship with lobbyists that McCain so eloquently denounced in other contexts; it also showed McCain getting perilously close to an ally of the Kremlin, even as he denounced Vladimir Putin. McCain should have seen these dangers earlier, and he should have reacted more furiously upon discovering them. Davis’s rivals in the campaign had denounced Davis so often and for so long that perhaps it caused McCain to discount their warnings about Manafort.

McCain took these complaints seriously only after Davis’s rivals charged Manafort with owning an apartment in Trump Tower, allegedly purchased by Oleg Deripaska. (There’s no evidence that I have seen to bolster that allegation, although Manafort was, indeed, in the midst of further entangling himself with the Russian oligarch in various other business ventures.) As McCain considered these allegations, he began to articulate the menace represented by Paul Manafort. One McCain aide told me the candidate instructed Davis and Manafort to cease their firm’s ties with its pro-Russian clients—an edict that Manafort apparently ignored.

According to McCain aides, the crucial moment came in the planning for the 2008 convention. I was told that Manafort lobbied desperately to become manager of the Republican National Convention, to take on the role of orchestrating the show. This was the sort of job that he held several times before. It represented the sort of behind-the-scenes power that he sought his entire career. Because of his relationship with Davis, and because of his resume, he thought of the job as something close to his birthright. But McCain didn’t want any further association with Manafort, so he denied him the job, a rejection that sent Manafort into a fit of rage and depression. All the evidence for rejecting Paul Manafort as a man of dubious character was amply available in 2008—and McCain acted upon it.

    Sammy Finkelman (02a146)

Note: Manafort did and does have an apartment in Trump Tower. He bought it in all-cash transaction (that means no borrowing, not unmarked $10 and $20 bills) in 2006. What Franklin Foer evidently meant when he said he couldn’t verify that, was that he couldn’t verify that Oleg Derispaska was the real owner.

  56. “The Germanic root is cousin to the Latin term whence the Spanish term mestizo and French term métis originate.”

Indeed, but its origin was 1930s Nazi Germany. The National Socialist Democratic Workers Party made it a thing. Also, I doubt Jews would agree that the term is “Yiddishy” as it’s not some harmless, benign term used to describe a partial Jew. And as they say, words mean things.

…have you considered that Mollie Tibbits might not have called the police on her stalker because she was afraid of being Internet Mobbed for Incorrect Racial Actions, like Justine Sacco?

No, because I never heard such a thing. All we have is Rivera’s semi- to non-reliable confession, with him saying that she said, “You need to leave me alone. I’m going to call the police,” and then he said that he blanked out, which is convenient for him. Assuming she had time to make a call, her reasons for not doing so were taken to her grave.

  59. I don’t know if I’m happy Aggie fought fire with fire regarding physical abuse allegations, or mad at them for partaking of racial “gotcha” games to make the abuse scandal go away. Probably shouldnt mess with a goomba anyhow.

  65. Most of these shooters have a similar profile, no it’s not ethnicity often there is a class component, many (columbine, aurora, tucson, now Jacksonville) had severe emotional issues known to many parties.

    Narciso (369281)

  66. The most common ethnicity of mass shooters recently has been ‘second generation immigrant’, the catch-all emotional issue can often be handily described as ‘not really having strong roots or interpersonal connections in the country they grew up in’, this is generally why Americans were much more legendarily cooperative AFTER a general, decades-long immigration freeze, but guess we really needed to weigh the fiduciary value of ‘common social trust’ over saving 2 bucks an hour on fruit pickers or whatever…

  67. Haha NeverTrumpers your narrative is about to get SHIFTED:

    “Donald J. Trump
    ‏Verified account @realDonaldTrump

Report just out: “China hacked Hillary Clinton’s private Email Server.” Are they sure it wasn’t Russia (just kidding!)? What are the odds that the FBI and DOJ are right on top of this? Actually, a very big story. Much classified information!”

  68. Paul, just tell me a better term in common usage for ‘half-white Jew’ and while you’re at it tell me when the Nazis actually terrorized you so much in person this century that you have to run from anything even vaguely associated with them.

Who knew that European Jews weren’t white. The things you learn. I’ll take the rest of your comment as disingenuous. If you used “mischling” out of ignorance, you could’ve just said so, but you haven’t. If you knew what you were doing, then I’ll leave others to judge your anti-Semitic comment.

    Paul Montagu (9dcfd2)

  69. The most common ethnicity of mass shooters recently has been ‘second generation immigrant’…

Is there a cite? The best data on mass shootings that I’ve seen is here, and they identify race but not immigrant status. BTW, “second generation immigrant” is another way of saying that those shooters were born in the USA and thus American citizens. In my experience, first-generation immigrants are strongly pro-American, generally.

  72. “and they identify race but not immigrant status. BTW, “second generation immigrant” is another way of saying that those shooters were born in the USA and thus American citizens. In my experience, first-generation immigrants are strongly pro-American, generally.”

This sort of non-response structured as a rebuttal is why I disrespect you so much.

OF COURSE FIRST-GENERATION IMMIGRANTS ARE PRO-AMERICAN. They’re dependent on us! They were usually brought in because they were either a. Fleeing a much worse situation at home b. cheaper than the natives!

The trouble comes when their kids grow up alienated because their parents are still attached to the old country and the old country’s ways/have no other relatives in-country/get raised according to their parent’s culture but find out they’re literally the only ones on their block who live that way/yes, don’t really resemble the surrounding population all that much and don’t get the reflexive emotional connection to ‘people like me’.

And in the age of smartphones, cheap international travel, and streaming video, the temptations away from assimilation and towards living a double or simply disconnected life with one foot in your residence and one overseas are much, much, MUCH greater.

  73. “jews not being white is a neo-nazi white-supremacist trope”

  74. This sort of non-response structured as a rebuttal is why I disrespect you so much.

That’s a sidestep, Nomad. I gave you a link and I asked for a cite, and all you gave me was bluster. You don’t have to respect me, just back up your comment.

    Paul Montagu (9dcfd2)

  75. Oh, and I’ll take your non-response to “mischling” as acknowledgement that you did know its meaning. You know, if a person makes enough anti-Semitic statements, folks might well just conclude that that person is an anti-Semite, and being coy and dancing around it is just affirmation.

    Paul Montagu (9dcfd2)

  76. Tom Wolfe explored this dynamic in back to blood his last novel, particularly with a Haitian American culture, the father was a,professor dedicated to learning, the second generation was xharitably other focused

    Narciso (369281)

  77. Mischling does not exist except as Nazi-speak. It was legal term used by the Nazis to classify persons who were not practicing Jews but had a Jewish ancestor. It has no other usage.
